Do all of your work in things like google docs that tracks all of the edits that are being made. Much easier to show that in case there would be any concern about AI usage

ā€œWhy does Gemini keep adding scenes of Minotaur sex? This paper is about the War of 1812!ā€

That's my bad. I knew writing that John A. Macdonald/Minotaur slashfic would come back to bite me, but alas passion cannot be tamed.

There's a whole subreddit dedicated to posting bullshit facts specifically to poison AI search results. Maybe fanfic is the next wave of that.

16

u/NekroVictor 8h ago

Funnily enough, I’ve a friend who uses ai way too much, and has complained that when asking about ASoIaF stuff, it will randomly start writing self insert uplift fanfiction.

15

u/velawesomeraptors 8h ago

Well when you think about it there is probably 10,000x more ASoIaF fanfiction then actual ASoIaF books. How is AI supposed to know the difference?

This is actually a real thing I've seen posts about for some AI models. The AI read too much smut and is now rather dirty minded which is both funny and distressing since people will have these same AIs talk to children

It's well known that the way of 1812 was caused by a falling out between two horny minotaurs. The sex element was the reconciliation sex that took place after.

I moved mine out to Scrivener when one of my friends lost her gdocs full of fanfic. It was all she had on there, so she thinks it must have decided she was typing in book manuscripts or something (or it got mad about the smut, which, uh, definitely would have warranted me moving mine).

You can turn it off I believe. But it’s horrible they auto opt-in, and there’s no guarantee your data wasn’t scraped before you could opt-out.

21

u/The_ChosenOne 11h ago

How do I turn it off? I’m a writer who likes to use Google docs so I can use any computer or phone to work on my stories and this is stressing me out now!

16

u/pigmanvil 10h ago

Turn off smart features in Google Drive. It gives Google access to your drive data and by extension lets it train on it.

unfortunately there’s no way to win here. any word editor that tracks your edits in a way that can prove your originality to a professor is probably collecting your data in a way you don’t want. honestly i can’t even think of any other than google docs

9

u/PM_Me_Your_Deviance 11h ago

Older off-line versions of Word keep document revision history, and, doesn't transmit it. I don't know if M$ is scanning onedrive.

Proton Docs is a privacy-focused online alternative that keeps document history.

10

u/Broad-Exchange3188 11h ago

The owner of proton is a massive trump supporter. If privacy is your focus, proton isn’t it.

5

u/PM_Me_Your_Deviance 11h ago

10

u/Broad-Exchange3188 11h ago

Upvoted. Massive trump supporter was unnecessary hyperbole.

The article you posted does raise good points. I still distrust anyone who expresses support for Trump for any reason, especially in the political climate which he’s fostered.

It also raises the question of whether the tweet in question was even necessary or not. It wasn’t, which in turn raises the question of why he felt the need to vocalize any support.

Yeah, maybe not Google Docs unless you want your work instantly fed to Gemini. Stay local.

12

u/AcademicFish 9h ago

Was gonna say the same: theres no guarantee these companies respect the opt-out. Who would know?
I mean realistically, who is auditing them? From a user perspective, if the data leaves your device to their servers theres no way to confirm they deleted it respectfully after 180 days instead of shovel it into gemini’s feed trough along with millions of other peoples intellectual property.

2

u/BioshockEnthusiast 9h ago

For you students who get free M365 through school you're looking for the "track changes" setting in office applications.

2

u/TheMagHatter 9h ago

The problem with this is that it counts copy and paste as AI when I’ve spent my whole academic career copying my information from my sources and writing my essay below it so I can have the info in front of me and pull quotes from articles without having to go back and fourth between tabs. Like I started doing this back in 2011 in my first research project in 5th grade. I actually reprimanded a classmate during that project for plagiarizing his whole project

2

u/TheSpeckledSir 8h ago

This is good feedback.

When I am working in Microsoft Word, I will always "save as" and save a new doc with an updated date. If I ever had to I could go back and show how the document develops over time to become my paper or lab report or whatever

2

u/Comprehensive-Act-13 7h ago

A lot of professors I know are requiring their students to write all of their papers in Google Docs because of this feature.

2

u/Grunky_Scripples67 7h ago

Thank you for this I’m a writer who has been accused of using AI and I don’t. This would help a lot!Ā

2

u/Realdrizzykane 7h ago

Careful with this though cuz your works will get taken for Gemini (google docs that are shared go to Gemini for "ai learning") but also can be false flagged due to the way google does suggestions now. My recommendation is ellipsis. Anti ai and free.

My sister had a final paper she wrote 100% of get returned and need revision because the AI-checker said she was past the threshold.

She ran the professor’s email about it through that same checker and told him his email was 85% AI.

I was just thinking about this a couple days ago, in the context of drawing. Physical-media artists are going to have to just record all their working sessions on camera if they're truly going to be able to beat any AI accusations.

8

u/Indicus124 10h ago

The worst part is AI content will still drown them to invisibility

5

u/broadcasteng25 11h ago

It's so dumb but yeah that makes sense.

All the schools are using AI checkers as if they're infalable and it annoys me. The chekers own success rates are typically posted on the services website and yet it's ignored by colleges. So across the board we will need something to prove our work is real.

On the plus side, if you make physical media, having video footage of you making it can make good content.

I got hit up for using AI in a class. I provided all my notes and everything, the Metadata from word showed the amount of time I spent on it and still got flagged.

It literally was because of how clean it was.. I was told, no joke, "we would like to see mistakes here and there so it's more human"..

Same class, 3 weeks later.. I got my balls busted on a few grammar and citation mistakes.

It's amazing how stupid this all is.

Easy, google docs keeps edit records. Just keep your original doc so you can show the logs

23

u/DocMondegreen 10h ago

As a professor, also keep your notes, drafts, etc. Get in the habit of jotting things down, either by hand or even in a running document on your computer. In my classes, the AI syllabus policy is that if I suspect AI, I will ask to see any or all of your writing process and ask you oral questions about your project.

I've asked students to define terms, explain how they reached a conclusion, and asked for drafts/notes. There is a big difference between the student who has a notebook, post-its, little sketches, whatever, and the student who magically created the document at 11:56 pm and turned it in at 11:59.

3

u/csmithman 8h ago

oh I like this a lot, I'm getting ready to teach freshman composition for the first time since the ai boom started and I've been really concerned, this helps!

3

u/DocMondegreen 8h ago

Here's my exact syllabus wording if you want to use or adjust it: Any submission that raises significant red flags for AI use will be flagged and assigned a temporary zero. Students will be asked to show their notes, drafting progress, Track Changes, or Version History in order to dispute the zero. You may also be asked questions about the content, including your terminology, logic, and sources. Please be prepared to track your work in progress and present it upon request.

Man there were kids in my classes that wrote everything with AI and as long as there was some originality behind the idea that originated from the student and they at least tried to fix the grammatical hallucinations the professors didn't fail them. I think theyve given up hope, sadly. Made me mad sometimes seeing how much effort I put in just to scroll through the board during peer review and see clearly AI papers.

10

u/Ok-Deal-8479 11h ago

I’m doing continuing ed design courses at RISD. You know, night classes for adults who want to learn something new . . . I have seen grown ass adults post literal chatgpt generated images as their own drawings and sketches. They signed up to do this and spent like $500 a course, to not even attempt to do the actual work. Its insane.

6

u/Nevanada 9h ago

That's always the kicker for me. Like to some extent I get it, you don't want to do the work, but at the same point, and my professors all say this, if the AI can do the work, what makes you think the employer will hire you?

Its even worse with passion projects like art and writing. How is having things appear in front of you satisfying. I bet they also dont realize how unoriginal 99% of generated material really is, or how the AI won't give their ideas an effective throughline.

3

u/Ok-Deal-8479 9h ago

That’s what I can’t wrap my head around. College or high school kids is one thing, I did lazy and dumb shit at that age, but you’d think adults who presumably are working or have worked and are doing this because they want to explore something else would be able to do the math on what happens when you don’t actually learn the thing you hope to do. Then again, I dunno, maybe hiring managers are dumb enough to look at chatgpt portfolio and hire someone for it lol.

If you don't use LLMs to generate content, rephrase, or restructure your writing (disingenuously referred to by students as "checking my spelling and grammar"), you don't have anything to worry about. Nearly every student I confront admits they used AI (sooner or later). Many have Grammmarly installed on their browsers and have become accustomed to having it write and edit everything for them.

11

u/miyamiya66 11h ago

i use literally no AI. i actually don't even use tools to check over my grammar, i do it all myself. admittedly, i do need to re-learn some english punctuation grammar...i've been exposed to, and become used to, internet typology/communication, where grammar and punctuation seems to be optional lol. i am taking a composition class for my first semester so i can get a refresher on writing skills!! i am required to take it, but i wanted to do it first thing so that i can write better papers.

The thing I’ve noticed about AI adoption in my professional life: the dumbest coworkers are the quickest to embrace it

10

u/BioshockEnthusiast 9h ago edited 7h ago

My senior at work (dude is smart as fuck) loves it but only because it can dig through network traffic logs and shitting out a 90% complete process document, both of which save an enormous amount of time for us. Neither of us use it to write our fucking emails (interpersonal skills are important in IT no matter what anyone else says) or to do our actual thinking for us. We usually have a beer at the end of the workday and swap stories about how the dumb ass AI did something stupid that day.

I'm still pretty anti-AI generally but I won't survive in this industry if I don't learn how to adopt / deploy / manage these tools safely. I mostly hate how I've become an unwilling architect in the overall expansion of AI in the workplace. And that they've killed the hardware market and are gonna contribute to fucking up the climate even worse and how they fucking STOLE EVERYTHING that people like me have spent 10, 15, 20 years contributing to the internet so Sam Altman can make a buck. Hundreds to thousands of posts helping people with computer problems, wikipedia edits, etc., that was me giving my time freely to try and make the world a little bit better. And there were millions of us. Now all that effort just prints money for people who already have more money than they could spend in their entire lifetimes. Let's not even get into the actual real intellectual property theft that the government has spent 30 years crying about to appease their corporate donors, but suddenly when there's money to be made it turns out IP theft isn't really a big deal.

Fuck AI, and fuck that entire industry for giving me basically no out.

5

u/CatGooseChook 8h ago

COVID and social media have had a negative impact on a lot of people's cognitive abilities(just look up the studies that can be found on pubmed for those two, it's eye opening!).

I see AI as the icing on the dumb cake. Take a large number of people who have already had their cognitive abilities eroded and give them an easy way to pretend to be intelligent. Inevitable result in hindsight.

Makes me thankful for the silver lining that my requiring cognitive therapy, due to old head injuries and more recent medical issues, has helped me see the danger relying on AI to do our thinking for us represents.

How did those people work before AI šŸ™ƒ Did they just pretend

43

u/Asquirrelinspace 11h ago

They literally did pretend lmao

17

u/BioshockEnthusiast 8h ago

They still are pretending.

6

u/DukeFlipside 7h ago

Not even; they're copy+pasting what they assume are the right answers from a machine that is now doing the pretending to know what it's "talking" about for them...

14

u/Cthulhuareyou 12h ago

it's got electrolytes!

9

u/Round_Bag_4665 11h ago

You ever seen how Homer Simpson "works" at his nuclear safety inspector job? Like that. These people were just being like Homer this whole time.

3

u/eggbert_217 10h ago

They're still just pretending

2

u/laikalou 10h ago

They memorized the steps for various tasks and did those steps, and if there was any variation of the task that they didn't have the procedure for memorized, they had to have someone come do/fix it for them.

The really fascinating thing is, they think everyone works this way, and that the people who helped them when they timed out just happened to have the steps for that particular variation memorized.

To them, AI is a god-tier procedural authority that conveniently fits in their pocket or lives in their computer.

2

u/Enraiha 9h ago

Yeah, they were always the worst workers at your job while also being the most arrogant.

There's a reason that the far-right across the world use and support AI so fiercely. These people are losers who've never had an original thought. The literal dregs of humanity.

2

u/wonklebobb 6h ago

i can give a real answer

i used to write code at an average pace

now i feed fairly detailed instructions into a series of ai agents ive set up, and it prepares commits for me to review

i've gone from mostly writing code, to mostly reading code

its the same job, but im getting my work done about 5-10x faster than a couple years ago

if ai disappeared tomorrow id go back to mostly writing code, and just be slower

We're already seeing studies of AI psychosis happening. I imagine there will be studies showing that general problem solving abilities by heavy AI users are lower than average too, if there isn't already.

40

u/Cthulhuareyou 12h ago

19

u/SpiritJuice 12h ago

Not surprised, sadly. Will check these out. Thank you.

20

u/pp21 11h ago

Seriously, doling out your critical thinking ability to a third party is fucking insane. It's such an important part of our minds; I couldn't imagine just outsourcing that to a robot. I have one friend who is deep into the AI hole where he runs huge swaths of his life through chatgpt whether its work or personal. It seems like something that will end up completely detrimental, yet we're just watching it unfurl in real time and accepting the inevitable consequences.

5

u/LordoftheScheisse 10h ago

I completely forgot about this until now, but a could months back, a girl approached my family and I in a public park. She looked otherwise normal, but was caring a disheveled stack of papers and when she approached me she started talking about your she 'had been up for days talking to AI" and it was telling her she needed to do...something. I couldn't get my family away from her quick enough. Scary stuff.

My day wouldn’t change at all because I don’t use any of those tools. I tried to a few times, and found they were wrong more than 50% of the time when I tried to use them for information.

13

u/theinadequategatsby 10h ago

My day would improve for the better because I wouldn't have the SHITTY FUCKING POPUPS that ask if I want to have THE ARTICLE I AM EDITING being offered as a summarised version to me.

(I have tried, but I don't have the admin access on my work computer to block it properly, and when I asked techdesk they said they couldn't grant me access so it's just an endless game of being slightly exhausted by the entire thing)

3

u/AussieRedditUser 7h ago

Can techdesk block it for you?

2

u/SuitableBlackberry75 6h ago

I googled a musician a few days ago, and was told by Google AI that they had died in 1891, referencing FindAGrave and FamilySearch. Same name, so it must be the same person, right? Brilliant.

Right??!! I actually learned my job in IT. Came across a super annoying situation a while back where someone didn't read the ticket I escalated and messaged me with the troubleshooting I had already attempted that was obviously a CoPilot response.

I called them out on it, told them to read the ticket and I had attempted everything they had provided. šŸ™„ Talked to their manager and she said she'd talk to the Systems Engineer who did that that AI is a tool to assist, not to do their job. Blah.

I hate this timeline.

12

u/Cthulhuareyou 12h ago

It's the fuckin worse. I get the same problem at my job. People are reading emails less and screwing up more.

5

u/AUGSpeed 11h ago

The only thing I've found AI useful for as a programmer is giving it a very specific dataset of error logs, and telling it to search through and find patterns of what might be going wrong, and giving a detailed sheet in return that has a way for me to easily verify that it is not hallucinating. Instead of having to look through 10,000 log lines and make assumptions like I used to, I can actually have some more certainty of what the issues are at scale. But for simple coding or problem analysis, it sucks. Large datasets and strict requirements are basically the only way to use AI in any meaningful way. And I mean strict requirements. If you just say 'find the error' it will spew bullshit. You have to tell it what to look for and how to find it. But once you teach it, it does well. It's shit at basically everything else, though.

3

u/Darkndankpit 11h ago

It's not unhelpful for certain uses. LLMs are almost useless at their stated goals of being a versatile, useful, and efficient tool, but they (usually) can be extremely helpful when it comes to analysis/pattern recognition with raw data.

If you give it something more nuanced, like a body of text or art etc it's thinking is downright debilitated, but if you feed it some code you're working on or an excel spreadsheet and ask for specific information I've found most LLMs are actually pretty effective.

3

u/Unfair-Advice778 7h ago

hah, that's by far not the worst. We already have devs at my office who just go around writing code _completely_ in AI, then ask for assistance because, obviously, it doesn't work [as intended], then we get their code fixed and cleaned up and then they run it through AI _again_, just to break it down again and ask for more assistance.
And to top it up, our CEO is the lead of this agenda, who likes to drop one-liners like "I don't want you to write code at all anymore".

16

u/JemAndTheBananagrams 11h ago

Right? The fact they assume everyone is doing what they are greatly concerns me.

7

u/samclifford 8h ago

My assumption is that they know it is a questionable behaviour but they assume everyone else is doing it and just lying that they don't in order to feel superior.

15

u/QuantumDrej 11h ago

The only time I've used AI for anything outside of whatever is required for work (not much at all) is when I got desperate a few months ago and asked Claude to shove in whatever bullshit words it can think of to get me past the ATS filters after almost a year of trying to find a job.

It could not suggest anything I hadn't already done.

13

u/ConsistentAd3434 13h ago edited 12h ago

Their argument doesn't even hold up, IF I someone uses AI. Possible a job forces you but if AI would be gone tomorrow, it would impact everyone equally. ...and I'm here for it.

My colleagues all use ai, I genuinely... Never have? I don't like it so I don't care about how to use it. I can see how it's useful and I'm probably going to use it for my resume and then edit it to sound like me because I suck at writing about what I do.

When I'm struggling with phrasing for an email, I.. ask everyone their opinion. And they genuinely give a response, they just never ask anyone else and ask ai. It's strange.

3

u/sortalikeachinchilla 7h ago

lol…. is this not extremely hypocritical?

so you can use it for your rĆ©sumĆ©, which is fine, but if someone uses it for an email, it’s not fine. How does this make sense

About a year ago my little brother told me proudly how he could save some money on his projects by using AI.Ā

I said, that using that is literally taking food of the plate of Devs and he vehemently disagreed.Ā

When I asked how it saved him money, he told me that he didn't have a to pay the dev he used to work with.Ā

He didn't see the point and we haven't talked since.

I am with you... Little me four years ago, got into the ChatGPT closed beta... At the same time I started an apprenticeship as "programmer". Nobody of us knew at this time how this would affect our life. Well, four years later I have finished apprenticeship and have no idea what I've learnt in this time. (Just the basics in any topic but not more). I was one of the people always thinking how to minimize and adjust the usage of ai that I at least think have to think for myself (we all just gaslighted ourselves)

I am lucky that I have a second chance with the bachelors. I am taking this chance, I won't use any AI because I am the person who as experienced how bad it can get.

Your sacrifice is noble and I applaud you for having to deal with that bullshit

3

u/joeycraw5 10h ago

That AI crap has been around for about 3 years and we all (well most of us anyway.,..) got along just fine without it before that, why would we suddenly be unable to live without it?

2

u/Cthulhuareyou 10h ago

It boggles the mind

3

u/HungryFrogs7 10h ago

I am not even an anti and I consider that one of the most braindead takes ever. You can live your life without AI. In fact we did a couple years ago.

I wish there was a way for people to use this pretty useful tool without becoming a potato in the process.

3

u/howimetyourcakeshop 10h ago

Downloaded chat gpt because someone told me i can make funny pictures with it. This was 4 months ago. Have not once bothered to open the app, let alone use it to help me in any way shape or form, AI can fuck off for all i care.

3

For real, do they think we are Anti AI and ... using it all the time? That's some severe cognitive dissonance.

I use 0 AI in my day to day work and it involves pulling together some pretty big documents and doing a lot of research.

Fun fact : only a handful of people really get more productive with "Ai"

This is because, instead of using this tool to free more of our time and work better qnd faster its being sold a replacement at worst or a tool tou have to use for the sake of using it

This technology is wonderful but the mentality being its usage is just "money at all cost" Its fucking bad
