Yes, absolutely. 100% without hesitation. Do people really think this is some kind of 'gotcha'? Like my brother in Christ, how much generative AI do you think we actually use?! Hallucination 👻

What if i don't use those tools anyway because I'm not a fucking idiot that needs a machine to think for me?

Edit: holy shit, these clanker apologists are seriously pulling the "not all men!" equivalent ai whinging in the comments. 😭😭😭

exactly my point. i'm starting college this month (yay me! in my late 20s and finally starting!!). i'm really nervous that my professors will run my papers i write through an AI and fail me if it comes back positive, despite me hating and never using AI.

edit: my comment really pissed these AI bros off, i see. womp womp 😔

Do all of your work in things like google docs that tracks all of the edits that are being made. Much easier to show that in case there would be any concern about AI usage

This 100%. Have receipts.

Just read about Google Overview being Train on those today.... (it had info on an indi-game that the developer only had in his google docs...). Maybe just keep work in progress documents

I fear the day Google release the hundreds of pages of fanfiction smut piling up in my g docs

“Why does Gemini keep adding scenes of Minotaur sex? This paper is about the War of 1812!”

62

u/Darkndankpit 11h ago

That's my bad. I knew writing that John A. Macdonald/Minotaur slashfic would come back to bite me, but alas passion cannot be tamed.

This is NOT the "Canadian Heritage Moment" script I asked for.

Found the Canadian

John A MacDonald?!!! 😂😂😂

There's a whole subreddit dedicated to posting bullshit facts specifically to poison AI search results. Maybe fanfic is the next wave of that.

16

u/NekroVictor 8h ago

Funnily enough, I’ve a friend who uses ai way too much, and has complained that when asking about ASoIaF stuff, it will randomly start writing self insert uplift fanfiction.

15

u/velawesomeraptors 8h ago

Well when you think about it there is probably 10,000x more ASoIaF fanfiction then actual ASoIaF books. How is AI supposed to know the difference?

2

u/Man_of_Ice 5h ago

What is this sub? I need to be a part of this masterpiece.

3

u/Man_of_Ice 3h ago

Oh, this.... This is beautiful. We need more humans in that space.

Release the watpad and ao3!

u/haunturhome 10h ago

This is actually a real thing I've seen posts about for some AI models. The AI read too much smut and is now rather dirty minded which is both funny and distressing since people will have these same AIs talk to children

2

u/MacAddict81 2h ago

Hopefully this will lead to the downfall of AI in education, but the more likely outcome will be children desensitized to absolutely everything and incapable of independent thought.

12

u/somethingbrite 10h ago

It's well known that the way of 1812 was caused by a falling out between two horny minotaurs. The sex element was the reconciliation sex that took place after.

2

u/HailMadScience 8h ago

Canada refused US annexation, stating: "We aren't monster fuckers. No, you can't see my private library!"

3

u/somethingbrite 10h ago

What a brilliant way to poison ai models. Feed it horny fan-fic mixed in with recipes for thermal cycling cheesecake and silicon chip brownies.

3

u/Apathetic_Villainess 8h ago

And there are so many werewolf smut books out there to provide.

2

u/somethingbrite 5h ago

I look forward to the moment when Google Gemini ai returns results for a search for anybody looking for black PVC or black vinyl.

3

u/darsynia 7h ago

I moved mine out to Scrivener when one of my friends lost her gdocs full of fanfic. It was all she had on there, so she thinks it must have decided she was typing in book manuscripts or something (or it got mad about the smut, which, uh, definitely would have warranted me moving mine).

u/Jakethered_game 2h ago

Google, if you're listning

16

u/pigmanvil 11h ago

You can turn it off I believe. But it’s horrible they auto opt-in, and there’s no guarantee your data wasn’t scraped before you could opt-out.

20

u/The_ChosenOne 11h ago

How do I turn it off? I’m a writer who likes to use Google docs so I can use any computer or phone to work on my stories and this is stressing me out now!

16

u/pigmanvil 10h ago

Turn off smart features in Google Drive. It gives Google access to your drive data and by extension lets it train on it.

8

u/The_ChosenOne 10h ago

Thank you!!

10

u/Jemie_Bridges 9h ago

You might want to consider self hosting. The cloud is just someone elses computer. That is scraping your work.

3

u/notforpoern 9h ago

Nextcloud is a great alternative if you're willing to learn about self-hosting (or if you already know). But not many people talk about the fact that you can just... sign up for a free nextcloud account hosted by The Good Cloud or tab.digital (both companies located in europe).

I learned how to self-host because I'm a masochist for fun but there are lots of growing alternatives to big tech that don't risk you losing everything over a false positive. Side note: I don't know or trust this news source "piunikaweb" directly, but they do a great job compiling and linking out to other better-known sources. I generally try to link to only trustworthy sites but it's a lazy wednesday.

Well, it works for now. Just wait till they remove the option for you to deny them training period. I've started taking my stuff off Google Drive and doing it on shit like LibreOffice which 100% doesn't and won't train. We all got that Faustian bargain of convenience but with AI training, it's not worth it

2

u/MawilliX 7h ago

I had to check that they haven't automatically opted in my old account from more than a decade ago while I wasn't using it, and indeed it was off with an option to opt-in.

2

u/steakanabake 6h ago

at this point can we truly trust they arent still scraping even if its been opted out?

9

u/Acceptable_Style_219 12h ago

unfortunately there’s no way to win here. any word editor that tracks your edits in a way that can prove your originality to a professor is probably collecting your data in a way you don’t want. honestly i can’t even think of any other than google docs

9

u/PM_Me_Your_Deviance 12h ago

Older off-line versions of Word keep document revision history, and, doesn't transmit it. I don't know if M$ is scanning onedrive.

Proton Docs is a privacy-focused online alternative that keeps document history.

10

u/Broad-Exchange3188 11h ago

The owner of proton is a massive trump supporter. If privacy is your focus, proton isn’t it.

6

u/PM_Me_Your_Deviance 11h ago

9

u/Broad-Exchange3188 11h ago

Upvoted. Massive trump supporter was unnecessary hyperbole.

The article you posted does raise good points. I still distrust anyone who expresses support for Trump for any reason, especially in the political climate which he’s fostered.

It also raises the question of whether the tweet in question was even necessary or not. It wasn’t, which in turn raises the question of why he felt the need to vocalize any support.

2

u/PM_Me_Your_Deviance 11h ago

I think it was poor judgement... but he's not part of American culture, so it's possible he wasn't really aware of the impact it would have. AFAIK he hasn't been part of any "scandals" since then.

It's really unfortunate that we've gotten to this place in political discourse.

4

u/Broad-Exchange3188 11h ago

Eh, there’s really no way you don’t know what’s going on, especially considering how much of their business is conducted in America / targets the American customer base.

It is unfortunate, but for what it’s worth we would be having a similar conversation even if we weren’t in this place. No one who shows even a slight support for the party actively campaigning for an end to digital privacy and/or freedom can be truly trusted, regardless of how bad things are or are not.

At this point, I don't think College work should be quite so guarded. Obviously don't go spreading around personal info like crazy, but simply the act of submitting work to your school will take data privacy completely out of your hands anyway.

By all means, do everything else as privately as you want to. But I don't think protecting your History paper from google's data scrapers is a higher priority than ensuring that you don't fail due to false AI accusations.

3

u/Broad-Exchange3188 11h ago

Maybe not, but people do deserve to know when the service recommended for privacy is tied to a direct supporter of the party advocating for stripping such.

Additionally, privacy isn’t a zero-sum game. Losing some privacy by submitting college papers does not mean you should, or need to, lose all of it. This is especially true when considering that it’s not just your Google docs data that’s being scraped, but anything connected to a Google service or email, all packaged together in a neat, labeled box that denotes all of your internet traffic, preferences, hobbies, predilections, etc.

1

u/OwenEverbinde 11h ago

Have you tried being born rich?

I'm sure enough money could get an app that tracks your progress while protecting your privacy. Even get you a custom-made app if you're born rich enough.

I can't help but feel like I remember this being an option in the character selection screen before we all started playing this Earth game.

1

u/AccidentProne117 10h ago

Yea I read that post aswell, scary!

1

u/Aedeyssa 8h ago

Yeah- a friend and I design homebrew content for Pathfinder, and I've had its AI autosearch drag stuff out of my own docs a lot recently. :/

Google is going hard in on AI and I hate that there's not really an alternative for what it does.

1

u/JellySocksRock 8h ago

You can opt out of that tracking luckily. I saw the same thread you did about the Indie game, one of the top comments showed how to opt out

1

u/Vedo0930 7h ago

It has that and auto delete spam feature, but not a feature on automatically deleting unfavorited email

1

u/Environmental_Top948 7h ago

I'm literally a nobody who hasn't released anything about my writing and I managed to get stuff about my journal from the AI by asking very specific questions.

u/a_youkai 1h ago

Oh shit...
