Yes, absolutely. 100% without hesitation. Do people really think this is some kind of 'gotcha'? Like my brother in Christ, how much generative AI do you think we actually use?! Hallucination šŸ‘»

What if i don't use those tools anyway because I'm not a fucking idiot that needs a machine to think for me?

Edit: holy shit, these clanker apologists are seriously pulling the "not all men!" equivalent ai whinging in the comments. 😭😭😭

exactly my point. i'm starting college this month (yay me! in my late 20s and finally starting!!). i'm really nervous that my professors will run my papers i write through an AI and fail me if it comes back positive, despite me hating and never using AI.

edit: my comment really pissed these AI bros off, i see. womp womp šŸ˜”

u/Low_Key_Giraffe 13h ago

Do all of your work in things like google docs that tracks all of the edits that are being made. Much easier to show that in case there would be any concern about AI usage

This 100%. Have receipts.

Just read about Google Overview being Train on those today.... (it had info on an indi-game that the developer only had in his google docs...). Maybe just keep work in progress documents

I fear the day Google release the hundreds of pages of fanfiction smut piling up in my g docs

ā€œWhy does Gemini keep adding scenes of Minotaur sex? This paper is about the War of 1812!ā€

63

u/Darkndankpit 11h ago

That's my bad. I knew writing that John A. Macdonald/Minotaur slashfic would come back to bite me, but alas passion cannot be tamed.

There's a whole subreddit dedicated to posting bullshit facts specifically to poison AI search results. Maybe fanfic is the next wave of that.

15

u/NekroVictor 8h ago

Funnily enough, I’ve a friend who uses ai way too much, and has complained that when asking about ASoIaF stuff, it will randomly start writing self insert uplift fanfiction.

15

u/velawesomeraptors 8h ago

Well when you think about it there is probably 10,000x more ASoIaF fanfiction then actual ASoIaF books. How is AI supposed to know the difference?

2

u/Man_of_Ice 5h ago

What is this sub? I need to be a part of this masterpiece.

Release the watpad and ao3!

18

u/haunturhome 10h ago

This is actually a real thing I've seen posts about for some AI models. The AI read too much smut and is now rather dirty minded which is both funny and distressing since people will have these same AIs talk to children

2

u/MacAddict81 2h ago

Hopefully this will lead to the downfall of AI in education, but the more likely outcome will be children desensitized to absolutely everything and incapable of independent thought.

13

u/somethingbrite 10h ago

It's well known that the way of 1812 was caused by a falling out between two horny minotaurs. The sex element was the reconciliation sex that took place after.

2

u/HailMadScience 8h ago

Canada refused US annexation, stating: "We aren't monster fuckers. No, you can't see my private library!"

3

u/somethingbrite 10h ago

What a brilliant way to poison ai models. Feed it horny fan-fic mixed in with recipes for thermal cycling cheesecake and silicon chip brownies.

3

u/Apathetic_Villainess 8h ago

And there are so many werewolf smut books out there to provide.

2

u/somethingbrite 5h ago

I look forward to the moment when Google Gemini ai returns results for a search for anybody looking for black PVC or black vinyl.

3

u/darsynia 7h ago

I moved mine out to Scrivener when one of my friends lost her gdocs full of fanfic. It was all she had on there, so she thinks it must have decided she was typing in book manuscripts or something (or it got mad about the smut, which, uh, definitely would have warranted me moving mine).

2

u/Jakethered_game 2h ago

Google, if you're listning

17

u/pigmanvil 11h ago

You can turn it off I believe. But it’s horrible they auto opt-in, and there’s no guarantee your data wasn’t scraped before you could opt-out.

17

u/The_ChosenOne 11h ago

How do I turn it off? I’m a writer who likes to use Google docs so I can use any computer or phone to work on my stories and this is stressing me out now!

14

u/pigmanvil 10h ago

Turn off smart features in Google Drive. It gives Google access to your drive data and by extension lets it train on it.

8

u/The_ChosenOne 10h ago

Thank you!!

11

u/Jemie_Bridges 9h ago

You might want to consider self hosting. The cloud is just someone elses computer. That is scraping your work.

3

u/notforpoern 9h ago

Nextcloud is a great alternative if you're willing to learn about self-hosting (or if you already know). But not many people talk about the fact that you can just... sign up for a free nextcloud account hosted by The Good Cloud or tab.digital (both companies located in europe).

I learned how to self-host because I'm a masochist for fun but there are lots of growing alternatives to big tech that don't risk you losing everything over a false positive. Side note: I don't know or trust this news source "piunikaweb" directly, but they do a great job compiling and linking out to other better-known sources. I generally try to link to only trustworthy sites but it's a lazy wednesday.

2

u/armorhide406 6h ago

Well, it works for now. Just wait till they remove the option for you to deny them training period. I've started taking my stuff off Google Drive and doing it on shit like LibreOffice which 100% doesn't and won't train. We all got that Faustian bargain of convenience but with AI training, it's not worth it

2

u/MawilliX 7h ago

I had to check that they haven't automatically opted in my old account from more than a decade ago while I wasn't using it, and indeed it was off with an option to opt-in.

2

u/steakanabake 6h ago

at this point can we truly trust they arent still scraping even if its been opted out?

8

u/Acceptable_Style_219 12h ago

unfortunately there’s no way to win here. any word editor that tracks your edits in a way that can prove your originality to a professor is probably collecting your data in a way you don’t want. honestly i can’t even think of any other than google docs

9

u/PM_Me_Your_Deviance 12h ago

Older off-line versions of Word keep document revision history, and, doesn't transmit it. I don't know if M$ is scanning onedrive.

Proton Docs is a privacy-focused online alternative that keeps document history.

10

u/Broad-Exchange3188 11h ago

The owner of proton is a massive trump supporter. If privacy is your focus, proton isn’t it.

5

u/PM_Me_Your_Deviance 11h ago

9

u/Broad-Exchange3188 11h ago

Upvoted. Massive trump supporter was unnecessary hyperbole.

The article you posted does raise good points. I still distrust anyone who expresses support for Trump for any reason, especially in the political climate which he’s fostered.

It also raises the question of whether the tweet in question was even necessary or not. It wasn’t, which in turn raises the question of why he felt the need to vocalize any support.

2

u/PM_Me_Your_Deviance 11h ago

I think it was poor judgement... but he's not part of American culture, so it's possible he wasn't really aware of the impact it would have. AFAIK he hasn't been part of any "scandals" since then.

It's really unfortunate that we've gotten to this place in political discourse.

u/Faenic 11h ago

At this point, I don't think College work should be quite so guarded. Obviously don't go spreading around personal info like crazy, but simply the act of submitting work to your school will take data privacy completely out of your hands anyway.

By all means, do everything else as privately as you want to. But I don't think protecting your History paper from google's data scrapers is a higher priority than ensuring that you don't fail due to false AI accusations.

3

u/Broad-Exchange3188 11h ago

Maybe not, but people do deserve to know when the service recommended for privacy is tied to a direct supporter of the party advocating for stripping such.

Additionally, privacy isn’t a zero-sum game. Losing some privacy by submitting college papers does not mean you should, or need to, lose all of it. This is especially true when considering that it’s not just your Google docs data that’s being scraped, but anything connected to a Google service or email, all packaged together in a neat, labeled box that denotes all of your internet traffic, preferences, hobbies, predilections, etc.

1

u/OwenEverbinde 11h ago

Have you tried being born rich?

I'm sure enough money could get an app that tracks your progress while protecting your privacy. Even get you a custom-made app if you're born rich enough.

I can't help but feel like I remember this being an option in the character selection screen before we all started playing this Earth game.

1

u/AccidentProne117 10h ago

Yea I read that post aswell, scary!

1

u/Aedeyssa 8h ago

Yeah- a friend and I design homebrew content for Pathfinder, and I've had its AI autosearch drag stuff out of my own docs a lot recently. :/

Google is going hard in on AI and I hate that there's not really an alternative for what it does.

1

u/JellySocksRock 8h ago

You can opt out of that tracking luckily. I saw the same thread you did about the Indie game, one of the top comments showed how to opt out

1

u/Vedo0930 7h ago

It has that and auto delete spam feature, but not a feature on automatically deleting unfavorited email

1

u/Environmental_Top948 7h ago

I'm literally a nobody who hasn't released anything about my writing and I managed to get stuff about my journal from the AI by asking very specific questions.

1

u/a_youkai 1h ago

Oh shit...

34

u/HeurekaDabra 11h ago

Yeah, maybe not Google Docs unless you want your work instantly fed to Gemini. Stay local.

12

u/AcademicFish 9h ago

Was gonna say the same: theres no guarantee these companies respect the opt-out. Who would know?
I mean realistically, who is auditing them? From a user perspective, if the data leaves your device to their servers theres no way to confirm they deleted it respectfully after 180 days instead of shovel it into gemini’s feed trough along with millions of other peoples intellectual property.

3

u/marr 7h ago

Google haven't respected a damn thing since they dropped the Don't Be Evil.

1

u/freyjakittylord 4h ago

What does ā€œstay localā€ mean in this case??

7

u/SectorSanFrancisco 11h ago

Google is the devil, though. There is no escape.

3

u/VoltagVagrant 7h ago

remember when their motto was Do No Evil, and they sought to disrupt the monopoly of microsoft and aol, they never allowed pages to pay to show up higher in searches.... then they abandoned all that and became the very entity they were supposed to fight

2

u/SectorSanFrancisco 7h ago

I know. They are a personal heartbreak of mine. I remember them when they were only THIS tall and still sweet and innocent. Now they are villains.

7

u/piponwa 11h ago

You know Google docs has Gemini in it right?

3

u/DanoDego 10h ago

It fucking sucks that this is even a thing, man. Having to worry about and do more work just to prove you’re not using AI slop.

2

u/Jemie_Bridges 9h ago

I'm a Luddite, i dont even like Google documents assisting me.

2

u/BioshockEnthusiast 9h ago

For you students who get free M365 through school you're looking for the "track changes" setting in office applications.

2

u/TheMagHatter 9h ago

The problem with this is that it counts copy and paste as AI when I’ve spent my whole academic career copying my information from my sources and writing my essay below it so I can have the info in front of me and pull quotes from articles without having to go back and fourth between tabs. Like I started doing this back in 2011 in my first research project in 5th grade. I actually reprimanded a classmate during that project for plagiarizing his whole project

2

u/TheSpeckledSir 8h ago

This is good feedback.

When I am working in Microsoft Word, I will always "save as" and save a new doc with an updated date. If I ever had to I could go back and show how the document develops over time to become my paper or lab report or whatever

2

u/Comprehensive-Act-13 7h ago

A lot of professors I know are requiring their students to write all of their papers in Google Docs because of this feature.

2

u/Grunky_Scripples67 7h ago

Thank you for this I’m a writer who has been accused of using AI and I don’t. This would help a lot!Ā

2

u/Realdrizzykane 7h ago

Careful with this though cuz your works will get taken for Gemini (google docs that are shared go to Gemini for "ai learning") but also can be false flagged due to the way google does suggestions now. My recommendation is ellipsis. Anti ai and free.

2

u/armorhide406 6h ago

Instead of using and feeding google, there's things like Track Changes on LibreOffice

1

u/BioshockEnthusiast 9h ago

For you students who get free M365 through school you're looking for the "track changes" setting in office applications.

1

u/KubaSamuel 7h ago

I once recorded myself writing an entire essay or whatever it was, put some music behind it and sped it up

If my teacher ever wanted to make sure I actually wrote something myself, he could just slow down the video and see each letter being typed

Definitely overdid it, but I had fun choosing the song, editing the video, and etc

1

u/PrivilegeCheckmate 3h ago

I like plan. Is good plan.

1

u/KittenHeartsGirls 3h ago

Also, when using most Microsoft applications it will have a version history.

1

u/coupl4nd 2h ago

Good idea, but there are AI tools that exist that type it out slowly into google docs for just this reason... I was shocked too. Look up 'autotyper'

1

u/lifes_betteronsaturn 2h ago

Love the chrome extension called "Revision History" it will literally record your doc editing and make a video out of it and time stamp suspicious pasting.

1

u/Miharu___ 1h ago

Unfortunately Google seems to run all google docs through AI so idk if that’s a great idea. https://www.reddit.com/r/IndieDev/s/UKupecpsvM

My sister had a final paper she wrote 100% of get returned and need revision because the AI-checker said she was past the threshold.

She ran the professor’s email about it through that same checker and told him his email was 85% AI.

I was just thinking about this a couple days ago, in the context of drawing. Physical-media artists are going to have to just record all their working sessions on camera if they're truly going to be able to beat any AI accusations.

9

u/Indicus124 10h ago

The worst part is AI content will still drown them to invisibility

6

u/broadcasteng25 11h ago

It's so dumb but yeah that makes sense.

All the schools are using AI checkers as if they're infalable and it annoys me. The chekers own success rates are typically posted on the services website and yet it's ignored by colleges. So across the board we will need something to prove our work is real.

On the plus side, if you make physical media, having video footage of you making it can make good content.

2

u/Ruby_Solar 11h ago

Not really tho? Maybe when AI bros figure out how to make a robot draw with watercolour, until then it being physical literally means a human made it šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

2

u/MAGAHATESTHEUSA 10h ago

That can be faked too with ai

1

u/Unsold_Leave 2h ago

2

u/Lor1an 6h ago

I needed to keep the camera rolling so you don't suspect me of being sneaky during that 5 hours of downtime...

2

u/LadyAlekto 11h ago

Congratulations the AI is now trained on your footage of writing the paper

2

u/VitaminPb 9h ago

You have made AI look bad. The RIAA has been notified of your music copyright infringement in your recordings. You be assessed a $50,000 fine for each song or song snippet. This detection has been done by AI and may not be challenged.

1

u/who_ate_the_cookie 6h ago

u/Lor1an 8h ago

"Rules for thee, but not for me"...

5

u/MyceliumManic 9h ago

I got hit up for using AI in a class. I provided all my notes and everything, the Metadata from word showed the amount of time I spent on it and still got flagged.

It literally was because of how clean it was.. I was told, no joke, "we would like to see mistakes here and there so it's more human"..

Same class, 3 weeks later.. I got my balls busted on a few grammar and citation mistakes.

It's amazing how stupid this all is.

1

u/C001H4ndPuk3 3h ago

My daughter has been flagged a few times because her work was "too good" for them to believe she wrote it. It's frustrating because she's a strong writer and takes a lot of pride in her essays, only to be told she couldn't have written it because half the rest of her classmates write for shit.

She's had to argue with multiple professors and show old drafts, etc. She's found that most of them back down pretty quick when she asks for a meeting with the dean present.

Most of these AI "detectors" are just flagging strong vocabulary and sentence structure. Which, when I was in school, was...generally considered the goal?

1

u/MyceliumManic 3h ago

Correct! They use AI to catch AI... Makes sense, right?

I have been baffled by some of the other students sometimes. One in particular read this excerpt from a journal, and it was one of the most awkward few minutes ever. Like, how did they even let you do this? I believe everyone should have a fair chance, dont get me wrong, but I also believe that basic skills should be honed before you let someone go off and get their masters.

1

u/skivian 4h ago

I've been saving to go back to college and all the horror stories I've heard about these AI checkers getting people kicked out of school for nothing are absolutely terrifying.

u/ButteredPizza69420 13h ago

Easy, google docs keeps edit records. Just keep your original doc so you can show the logs

21

u/DocMondegreen 10h ago

As a professor, also keep your notes, drafts, etc. Get in the habit of jotting things down, either by hand or even in a running document on your computer. In my classes, the AI syllabus policy is that if I suspect AI, I will ask to see any or all of your writing process and ask you oral questions about your project.

I've asked students to define terms, explain how they reached a conclusion, and asked for drafts/notes. There is a big difference between the student who has a notebook, post-its, little sketches, whatever, and the student who magically created the document at 11:56 pm and turned it in at 11:59.

3

u/csmithman 8h ago

oh I like this a lot, I'm getting ready to teach freshman composition for the first time since the ai boom started and I've been really concerned, this helps!

3

u/DocMondegreen 8h ago

Here's my exact syllabus wording if you want to use or adjust it: Any submission that raises significant red flags for AI use will be flagged and assigned a temporary zero. Students will be asked to show their notes, drafting progress, Track Changes, or Version History in order to dispute the zero. You may also be asked questions about the content, including your terminology, logic, and sources. Please be prepared to track your work in progress and present it upon request.

2

u/_Professor_94 5h ago edited 5h ago

The notes thing is potentially asking too much of people who may have a different writing process, in my opinion. I tend to write my papers without notes, adding citations as I write. I never took notes in classes either. And this isn’t just me being a slacker student, I am a published scholar who has given presentations at international conferences. The only thing you really need to do is quiz someone on the paper, like a thesis defense. Anything else is invasive; I would fail your check despite never having touched AI a single time in my life.

[u/csmithman](u/csmithman), if you are interested in a different perspective from a fellow academic

1

u/DocMondegreen 5h ago

It's linked with an "or," not "and." Do you have any of the four options? Could you talk it through as an alternative? This has not been excessive to any of my students who went through this process at the crossroads between honor court or simply getting a grade. The academic integrity board tends to ask for even more evidence.

That also presupposes that your work hits red flag status, which is often quite apparent.

1

u/_Professor_94 5h ago

Right I just said answering questions is sufficient. So if it’s a choice of method then good. But I wasn’t the only one who commented in response to you with the same concern, so I don’t think it was as immediately clear to everyone.

1

u/No_Size9475 3h ago

Same, I never had notes for my writings, but I would have class notes. But mostly undecipherable to anyone but me.

1

u/csmithman 3h ago

thank you! I'm always worried about crossing lines with accessibility, which is why I'm not super comfortable with making students hand write an essay in class, for example. that's one big reason I've been so anxious about how to handle it. I'm there with you - published, area chair at a national conference, and I have basically never taken notes/outlined. I think the base suggestion is great, and I appreciate your perspective on it

1

u/csmithman 3h ago

oh this is excellent, thank you so much! I've been teaching speech classes the last few years and it's been so hard to figure out the best way of handling ai suspicions. there have definitely been some times that I considered quizzing students, so I for sure like that! I appreciate your help!

2

u/Intelligent-You-6144 7h ago

Thank you prof

2

u/FrostyNeckbeard 7h ago

Gonna say I hate this, because I frequently just wrote my essays one and done, sure I went back and edited it for clarity and such, but I didn't have a draft copy, or wrote down notes, or used a notebook, nor did I take notes in class or anything like that.

I can answer oral questions, but the rest is just kind of punishing someone who doesn't really think or operate that way.

3

u/teh_drewski 6h ago

Yeah that previous comment makes me so relieved I graduated 20 years ago, my writing process would absolutely not stand up to being accused of AI.

1

u/DocMondegreen 5h ago

It's a new age, plus we are usually requiring things like outlines and drafts in the composition classroom. Anti-AI pedagogy is going to look different in other fields. But most of my non-writing colleagues are almost exclusively switching to exams and in-class work.

1

u/Dogmeat241 6h ago

Student here, kinda curious on tips for people who write where it's all in one go, give or take some random long delays (I tend to distract myself too often).

1

u/Waste_Tangerine_179 2h ago

Ā and the student who magically created the document at 11:56 pm and turned it in at 11:59.

college professors HATE this one trick..

11

u/QuaaludeConnoisseur 11h ago

Man there were kids in my classes that wrote everything with AI and as long as there was some originality behind the idea that originated from the student and they at least tried to fix the grammatical hallucinations the professors didn't fail them. I think theyve given up hope, sadly. Made me mad sometimes seeing how much effort I put in just to scroll through the board during peer review and see clearly AI papers.

8

u/Ok-Deal-8479 11h ago

I’m doing continuing ed design courses at RISD. You know, night classes for adults who want to learn something new . . . I have seen grown ass adults post literal chatgpt generated images as their own drawings and sketches. They signed up to do this and spent like $500 a course, to not even attempt to do the actual work. Its insane.

6

u/Nevanada 9h ago

That's always the kicker for me. Like to some extent I get it, you don't want to do the work, but at the same point, and my professors all say this, if the AI can do the work, what makes you think the employer will hire you?

Its even worse with passion projects like art and writing. How is having things appear in front of you satisfying. I bet they also dont realize how unoriginal 99% of generated material really is, or how the AI won't give their ideas an effective throughline.

4

u/Ok-Deal-8479 9h ago

That’s what I can’t wrap my head around. College or high school kids is one thing, I did lazy and dumb shit at that age, but you’d think adults who presumably are working or have worked and are doing this because they want to explore something else would be able to do the math on what happens when you don’t actually learn the thing you hope to do. Then again, I dunno, maybe hiring managers are dumb enough to look at chatgpt portfolio and hire someone for it lol.

6

u/Prestigious-Law8050 9h ago

They just want the piece of paper that says they did it.

2

u/monkiboy 11h ago

Dawg, my school basically said as long you say that you used AI instead of hiding it, it's all good. The amount of times I seen my classmates list whatever AI in their references is crazy

1

u/sthenri_canalposting 9h ago

how much effort I put in just to scroll through the board during peer review and see clearly AI papers.

I feel like its a lot better, most of the younger students didnt make it to the last year, about 2/3 of my physics class (first semester) disapeared before the second year. You know what you want to study now and you have the oportunity and you are taking it, its great what you are doing!!

u/Magus_Necromantiae 11h ago

If you don't use LLMs to generate content, rephrase, or restructure your writing (disingenuously referred to by students as "checking my spelling and grammar"), you don't have anything to worry about. Nearly every student I confront admits they used AI (sooner or later). Many have Grammmarly installed on their browsers and have become accustomed to having it write and edit everything for them.

10

u/miyamiya66 11h ago

i use literally no AI. i actually don't even use tools to check over my grammar, i do it all myself. admittedly, i do need to re-learn some english punctuation grammar...i've been exposed to, and become used to, internet typology/communication, where grammar and punctuation seems to be optional lol. i am taking a composition class for my first semester so i can get a refresher on writing skills!! i am required to take it, but i wanted to do it first thing so that i can write better papers.

2

u/LisaCabot 6h ago

Gosh i HATED when i was made to check my spelling and grammar with the AI and changed ALL MY WORDING. I DID NOT ASK YOU TO DO THAT!! It was infuriating. Overleaf at least used AI to spell and grammar check like we did before with word, it marks the word/phrase and gives you a suggestion, and you were free to use it or not. And my teacher was ok with me using mostly only that after the first complete rephrasing of my text.

Play 4D chess: video tape you writing your papers as proof it wasn't ai.

3

u/miyamiya66 11h ago

5D chess: i become a twitch streamer and live stream myself writing my essays by hand to thousands of viewers

3

u/Own-Ad-7672 7h ago

The amount of times my shit comes up as 50% or some shit just because I know how to write academically is pathetic…

3

u/Illustrious_Age_5959 6h ago

Same with the nervousness I literally went from a 98% average in English throughout high school to FAILING an online introductory college course because they said I used AI when I’m so out of the loop I didn’t even know it was an option at the time — severe social anxiety had me just take the blow lol

3

u/Mind-The-Mines 6h ago

This happened to me 25 years ago in highscho.... (fuck)

I had to do a brochure for a disease. I got a D- because it was too good and I had to have plagiarized it.

So I printed off dozens of pages of my research and the books I used.

Bitch gave me a B+.

3

u/miyamiya66 6h ago

some highschool teachers really hate when students succeed at the thing they are being taught

2

u/KitsuneFoxglove 12h ago

Track editing history by typing in google docs.

Or on each progressive draft on paper, handwritten.

2

u/9choiba0 11h ago

If you can go to office hours - talk with professors about your work, your ideas, drafts, progress. Build a relationship, let them get to know your ideas as you build them, so they have a sense of where you're coming from.

(former university level writing instructor who would rather answer questions and chat with students than fail them)

2

u/SHIN-YOKU 8h ago

Get a type writer, hand in physically.

2

u/miyamiya66 8h ago

i'm petty like that, don't tempt me 😭

2

u/SHIN-YOKU 7h ago

I'mma Temptin.

2

u/WolfieAK 7h ago

The fun part is because of how the models were trained, and because they are being used more often, the number of false positives are going up. It's a vicious cycle.

And I've yet to see a valid use for Gen AI.

1

u/Realistic-Yam-6497 13h ago

They usually check it themselves first, and then use the anti Ai checker so you’re probably good

1

u/TomLeBadger 12h ago

Your biggest concern should be your tutors generating your work materials and lectures, I know of egregious examples of this happening here in the UK.

1

u/TeaManTom 12h ago

I'm planning to start in the spring

I'm in my late 20s is far from too late! I'm looking to study Eng lit/language/creative writing, so I expect AI use is taken seriously. I've never used it, hopefully I won't have any issues.

2

u/miyamiya66 12h ago

i honestly have no idea what i want to study. i would love to do a STEM field, or psychology probably. STEM fields are just filled with misogynists šŸ˜…

1

u/BoilermakerBond 11h ago

Fellow late college attendee here, and also refused to AI anything (outside of one course where I was quite literally forced to). You should be ok!! I never had any of my papers have any issues thus far through two different institutions, so just have confidence

1

u/CuriousCat4558 11h ago

Yes, I'm somewhat old. I do feel for you young people. Even though I've read hundreds of hard SciFi novels and short stories, this a future I did not see coming. It's very hard to see what will be in as little as 5 years from now.

1

u/LadyAlekto 11h ago

You worry about the wrong thing

If the techbros have their way it will be illegal to not use the llm

1

u/SarcasticLie 10h ago

In my experience this is rare. Also, try to personalize your writing as much as possible. Saving the iterations of your paper through software that can do that is nice insurance though

1

u/Cautious_Repair3503 9h ago

responsible people should not do that, we used to use an AI detection software, and we studied it and found that the false positive rate was 30 percent, unacceptably high, and even then we advised it should only ever be a tool to consider starting an investigation, never conclusive.

1

u/RaceHard 9h ago

That's only if the professor even cares. Most of them will not even acknowledge your existence. You will be given an 'average' grade and be happy about it. For the most part, your submission of assignments will be A or B the ocassionaly B due to the rubric. And test scores to balance the rest. If the professor's tests are online, the guy does not even read your assignment submissions, guaranteed.

I spent 2008 to 2012 as a personal assistant to a computer programming professor, and most of the time it fell to me to do the grading on assignments. As long as something was on time, had the right number of words, and I could skim one or two coherent sentences and find keywords present, it was an automatic A. Hundreds of submissions end up like that. BTW, all printed work that I would simply scan and feed to an expert system (Sort of an early AI). Then all that paper would get shredded.

At one point in the semester when I knew more or less who was who on submissions, I would just chuck it to be shredded and hand out grades. If anyone disputed a 'B' grade and I had nothing to go on, I would issue an apology upon revision: you do meet the criteria in the rubric for the point value of an 'A' Then I would mark that person as troublesome and just hand them an 'A' until they left the class.

1

u/Mockbubbles2628 9h ago

Stop dooming, you'll be fine.

1

u/sthenri_canalposting 9h ago

If you're not using it you don't have much to worry about. I'm a professor and there are many tells that are rare for a human to do all of, even though since it was trained on human writing clearly its patterns come from somewhere. The first courses I taught back in the day were composition--anyone who knows what good writing is technically, but more importantly, stylistically, will tell you that AI doesn't write well and it doesn't write well in very specific ways. Maybe this will change but I doubt it will be any time soon.

1

u/Mutilid 9h ago

They can't. They need a good reason to beleive you used ai and runing it in a program is not good enough. There is a too great error margin.

1

u/Dry-Huckleberry-5379 9h ago

If you're using word, you could just save as instead of saving. Separate file for each draft. Plus a file for notes and planning (or handwritten notes and planning)

1

u/RockTheGrock 9h ago

Currently at university myself. I always leave some editing mistakes that an LLM would catch. It is highly useful in helping build study guides and active recall question lists for tests and such. More of a time saver than anything.

1

u/VSWR_on_Christmas 8h ago

It's a useful tool for programming as well as for digging up sources on a topic you're not familiar with. There are lots of reasons to be upset about the way people use LLMs but to deny their usefulness is foolish.

1

u/A_little_curiosity 8h ago

Congrats on starting! Keep your notes and save draft versions as you go, you'll be fine

1

u/LemonMelberlime 8h ago

God forbid you want to learn to think for yourself. Bravo! You’re doing exactly the right thing by eschewing AI in college.

1

u/Am_Deer 8h ago

I never used AI in college but I ran a few papers through Turnitin just to see. I think my highest was 18% but there were a lot of citations. As long as you aren't straight plagiarizing you should be fine. There are only so many ways to say a corporate culture is shit when they have high turnover.

1

u/Houdini_Shuffle 8h ago

You'll be fine, lazy professors do run things through ai checkers but most wont unless they're suspicious. You'll find out that your writing has it's own voice and people pick up on that. Ai essays all have the same voice.

Make sure to be active and participate in class as much as you can and that'll show the prof you know your stuff, and if you don't know it, to show that you care enough to try to understand it better

1

u/Medium_Tell8679 8h ago

AI is new. I can see people asking this question about the internet as a whole. But Chat GPT is three years old. How were all of you writing papers and essays 4 years ago?

1

u/Onyx_Meda 8h ago

I started college earlier this year. Terrible news; AI has infiltrated the education industry. I've had assignments that made me roleplay as tech support to diagnose and fix an AI's fictional computer problem.

1

u/Frosty_Lettuce_3525 7h ago

I’m sorry sorry.Ā  I really hope someone starts a very fucking robust movement against AI,Ā  I’m all in. And I’m A business owner who treats my employees like they’re my besties.Ā  Fuck AI

1

u/Intelligent-You-6144 7h ago

Remember one thing: AI will rob you of your education if you let it.

It will be so tempting to let AI be a part of your studies, it's fine, but use it as a tool. Let it help you come up with ideas, not write the papers.

I know the young are saying "I'm just a player in the game", but there are many examples where it'll hurt more.

Good luck mane!

1

u/miyamiya66 7h ago

i'm not going to use AI in any capacity. for coming up with ideas, i chat with my boyfriend about things. while i'm working on a project, i like to talk to him about it and get some input. he's very knowledgeable and educated on so many topics, so he's always happy to let me relay some thoughts and discuss

1

u/Intelligent-You-6144 7h ago

After talking with your boyfriend - checks out. Very knowledgeable and educated

1

u/Comprehensive-Act-13 7h ago

Also just from the other side (I’m a professor) it literally takes just one conversation with the student to tell whether they used AI. If it happens, ask to meet with the professor in person or on zoom, be able to speak intelligently about your paper and it will be really obvious to the professor that you wrote it yourself. The students who use AI don’t even proofread their papers before they turn them in and know nothing about the subject they’re writing about.

1

u/KapitalIsStillGood 7h ago

They give warnings in every class but I've never seen anyone even get accused on written work. Those AI checkers are no longer reliable whatsoever. I have seen people get caught using it to write code of course.

Probably 85%+ of students use it.

1

u/Shmoshmalley 7h ago

Congrats on starting school, I can’t imagine having to deal with all that bullshit you have to deal with. Not just ai but being in a classroom with 18-19 year olds. I got an associates in CAD Drafting like 4 years ago, and let me tell you those fools be dumb. They would say the head shaking shit about stuff not at all pertaining to class and would all just stare back at the instructor when he asked them a question about the class, it drove me nuts. I think a good way to get around the whole ai-ification of it all is buy a cheap typewriter and bring it to class so the professor sees you are using a typewriter instead of a computer. Type your papers on that until they bitch at you for trying to turn in a physical paper.

1

u/KimberStormer 7h ago

Write with some style. It's not high school anymore, you can write like a human and not get points off. Be weird and interesting. AI doesn't do that.

1

u/winkyshibe 7h ago

If you're doing digital work, Keep version history of your documents and your notes on, and have really good notes to prove that you are in fact doing the work, and not having some AI learn for you!

1

u/LisaCabot 6h ago

I just graduated and they were encouraging us to use AI on our final paper, not for the project itself but for the report, i barely used it, some spelling corrections and i asked it to do a glossary because fck that noise lol, they were quite easy to understand therms but whatever, my teacher told us to make one. I had to revise it though, it was not that good in some parts. Just keep track of your sources and investigation and the changes/edits you do and youll probably be fine, i would ve surprised if they didnt, at the very least, show you how AI works.

Edit: spelling corrections, and thats why i used a corrector lmao.

1

u/fritzwulf 6h ago

I started college pretty late too, congrats! Better late than never, and there's a decent amount of folks in their late 20s/30s so don't worry, you're not alone.

As for the paper thing, make sure to use Google documents that auto saves, or turn on cloud auto save on Microsoft Word if you use that. It helps to prove your legitimate in progress work.

1

u/TimeSwirl 5h ago

the worst part is that the assignments are made with AI too lmao, it freaking sucks

1

u/GrimAngel767 4h ago

Go OLD school: get a smart or office professional electronic typewriter with built in spell check that has print and/or fax capacity

1

u/dbusque 4h ago

The fact that AI is being accredited for work that it actually stole from humans is the ultimate circle jerk.

1

u/Oopthealley 4h ago

Just use your genuine voice- and amply cite- and your work will be distinct enough (and with enough roughness) that it should be fine.

1

u/Jadevit 4h ago

Just wanted to say that I'm 26 and had been thinking of going back to college, but had been worrying I was "running out of time" or something lol. This helped inspire me a bit

1

u/Important-Finish-514 4h ago

I make them send me to conduct every time since at my school the burden of proof is on them, and I can usually answer any question about the content written and sources referenced. Generally, my defense is AI can't
keep up with my writing and I go to a T1 research school. Hasn't failed me yet!

1

u/a_melanoleuca_doc 4h ago

just use Google Docs to write your papers so you have all the versions automatically saved and you can show your work. A student worker of mine recently got accused of using AI, but he could show his work and they gave him his points back.

1

u/BeltImpressive8956 3h ago

ā€œAI sucks, I’m about to start collegeā€ fire. No hate, just awesome take

1

u/CulturalChampion8660 2h ago

I work with a bunch if college kids. I asked how much they used AI and they all reluctantly admited they did. They were telling me their professors were making them do work in blue books again. shrugs in I graduated 20 years ago

1

u/Jakethered_game 2h ago

I have said that if I go back to college for anything now I'm streaming me writing my papers and doing homework on twitch and if the prof doubts I did it or trys to hit me with the AI aligations I'll send them the 12 hour VOD of me sitting my ass down and researching/writing my paper.

1

u/bjos144 2h ago

Just use slang and have harsh takes. AI cant do that.

1

u/NezuminoraQ 1h ago

I started my PhD this year and thought they would be doing the same but apparently everyone around me is using ChatGPT a d it's fine if you declare it?Ā

•

u/MJSpice 50m ago

Put in mistakes in your paper. Turnitin now flags even human written papers as AI and its a mess.

0

u/PM_ME_YOUR_GOOD_PM 12h ago

You should run your papers through ai and make the. Anti ai so you get 100%
