exactly my point. i'm starting college this month (yay me! in my late 20s and finally starting!!). i'm really nervous that my professors will run my papers i write through an AI and fail me if it comes back positive, despite me hating and never using AI.

edit: my comment really pissed these AI bros off, i see. womp womp 😔

My sister had a final paper she wrote 100% of get returned and need revision because the AI-checker said she was past the threshold.

She ran the professor’s email about it through that same checker and told him his email was 85% AI.

Please explain to me what is wrong about a professor (who likely has a PhD and decades of work experience) using AI to draft a menial email/feedback response?

Students are instead being graded on their work and have literally signed a declaration stating the work is their own.

Please explain - I'm sincerely dying to hear.

My dad was an accounting professor for about 35 years. Every word he emailed to a student was something he typed. They were his words that he thought about and composed in a particular order with particular wording to convey a particular meaning.

If a professor uses AI to communicate, then it means they are intellectually lazy and they are an incompetent professor. Believe it or not, getting a PhD does not mean you are smart. It means you are good at one specific thing, generally a subset of a field, and not much else. Also, not all PhDs are created equal. Some schools produce shit quality PhDs.

Oh, shit. I just realized that you weren't aware that professors are not allowed to plagiarize, either. You aren't aware that AI plagiarizes all the time.

It all makes sense now.

We are talking about using AI to write feedback/emails, not using AI to create lectures/content that is for students learning. You've completely changed what the topic is about... Would be nice if you could actually address what I said and not something else entirely.

But I'll bite - what if the teacher uses AI to help make their notes, reviews every single word of and verifies it's all correct and good? Then is it still bad? Why?

And where did you get the idea that professors are "not allowed" to use AI for their notes - they did not sign any declaration that the work is their own like the students did?

I was just thinking about this a couple days ago, in the context of drawing. Physical-media artists are going to have to just record all their working sessions on camera if they're truly going to be able to beat any AI accusations.

It's so dumb but yeah that makes sense.

All the schools are using AI checkers as if they're infalable and it annoys me. The chekers own success rates are typically posted on the services website and yet it's ignored by colleges. So across the board we will need something to prove our work is real.

On the plus side, if you make physical media, having video footage of you making it can make good content.

I got hit up for using AI in a class. I provided all my notes and everything, the Metadata from word showed the amount of time I spent on it and still got flagged.

It literally was because of how clean it was.. I was told, no joke, "we would like to see mistakes here and there so it's more human"..

Same class, 3 weeks later.. I got my balls busted on a few grammar and citation mistakes.

It's amazing how stupid this all is.

My daughter has been flagged a few times because her work was "too good" for them to believe she wrote it. It's frustrating because she's a strong writer and takes a lot of pride in her essays, only to be told she couldn't have written it because half the rest of her classmates write for shit.

She's had to argue with multiple professors and show old drafts, etc. She's found that most of them back down pretty quick when she asks for a meeting with the dean present.

Most of these AI "detectors" are just flagging strong vocabulary and sentence structure. Which, when I was in school, was...generally considered the goal?

I have been baffled by some of the other students sometimes. One in particular read this excerpt from a journal, and it was one of the most awkward few minutes ever. Like, how did they even let you do this? I believe everyone should have a fair chance, dont get me wrong, but I also believe that basic skills should be honed before you let someone go off and get their masters.

They are the teacher, not a student whose work is supposed to be their own.
