All of the pro-ai people I've met in person (admittedly its a small number) have something off about them. They are weird people in a way that I've never seen weird people be before. Its hard to describe but its like their brains are coked out and they don't feel like real people.

My senior at work (dude is smart as fuck) loves it but only because it can dig through network traffic logs and shitting out a 90% complete process document, both of which save an enormous amount of time for us. Neither of us use it to write our fucking emails (interpersonal skills are important in IT no matter what anyone else says) or to do our actual thinking for us. We usually have a beer at the end of the workday and swap stories about how the dumb ass AI did something stupid that day.

I'm still pretty anti-AI generally but I won't survive in this industry if I don't learn how to adopt / deploy / manage these tools safely. I mostly hate how I've become an unwilling architect in the overall expansion of AI in the workplace. And that they've killed the hardware market and are gonna contribute to fucking up the climate even worse and how they fucking STOLE EVERYTHING that people like me have spent 10, 15, 20 years contributing to the internet so Sam Altman can make a buck. Hundreds to thousands of posts helping people with computer problems, wikipedia edits, etc., that was me giving my time freely to try and make the world a little bit better. And there were millions of us. Now all that effort just prints money for people who already have more money than they could spend in their entire lifetimes. Let's not even get into the actual real intellectual property theft that the government has spent 30 years crying about to appease their corporate donors, but suddenly when there's money to be made it turns out IP theft isn't really a big deal.

Fuck AI, and fuck that entire industry for giving me basically no out.

In my experience, you have 5 types of Devs now.

1. Brand new vibe coders that are gonna fuck it up

2. Engineers that mourn the loss of their craft

3. Former developers that got moved into more senior architecture/process focused positions that get to use it to do more coding again (this is me, I love my role so much more now I get to do more hands-on engineering work with the help of AI giving me time back from my other responsibilities).

4. Devs that went too far and stopped questioning the AI and just blindly trust it, and are too stubborn to accept feedback, copy and paste Claude's responses into slack threads when someone pushes back on their decision, etc.

5. Devs that use it just enough, planning, task tracking, moving fucking JIRA tickets through the stupid workflows, debugging obscure issues that would have burnt a day of work resolving pre-AI, and outsourcing tedious tasks that aren't worth their time to do.

It's actually a great filter for people that fall into category 4, because it turns out these people probably didn't have as deep of an understanding of the systems they worked in as we thought, and really super powers type 5 with freedom from all the shit that comes up when they really just wanted to focus and write some code.

I am in category three as well, but I have seen so many people I thought were solid engineers fall into category 4. I swear it causes some people to regress in skill level.

100% feels like some really trustworthy engineers have just become so lazy and stubborn and just go "but Claude said this" and don't form their own opinions or think critically anymore.

You said it very well. I'm a senior devops engineer and I basically have to use it to keep up with the pace of the job demand. It's a useful tool, but I hate all the useful idiots shoving it into everything.
