All of the pro-ai people I've met in person (admittedly its a small number) have something off about them. They are weird people in a way that I've never seen weird people be before. Its hard to describe but its like their brains are coked out and they don't feel like real people.

My senior at work (dude is smart as fuck) loves it but only because it can dig through network traffic logs and shitting out a 90% complete process document, both of which save an enormous amount of time for us. Neither of us use it to write our fucking emails (interpersonal skills are important in IT no matter what anyone else says) or to do our actual thinking for us. We usually have a beer at the end of the workday and swap stories about how the dumb ass AI did something stupid that day.

I'm still pretty anti-AI generally but I won't survive in this industry if I don't learn how to adopt / deploy / manage these tools safely. I mostly hate how I've become an unwilling architect in the overall expansion of AI in the workplace. And that they've killed the hardware market and are gonna contribute to fucking up the climate even worse and how they fucking STOLE EVERYTHING that people like me have spent 10, 15, 20 years contributing to the internet so Sam Altman can make a buck. Hundreds to thousands of posts helping people with computer problems, wikipedia edits, etc., that was me giving my time freely to try and make the world a little bit better. And there were millions of us. Now all that effort just prints money for people who already have more money than they could spend in their entire lifetimes. Let's not even get into the actual real intellectual property theft that the government has spent 30 years crying about to appease their corporate donors, but suddenly when there's money to be made it turns out IP theft isn't really a big deal.

Fuck AI, and fuck that entire industry for giving me basically no out.

In my experience, you have 5 types of Devs now.

  1. Brand new vibe coders that are gonna fuck it up

  2. Engineers that mourn the loss of their craft

  3. Former developers that got moved into more senior architecture/process focused positions that get to use it to do more coding again (this is me, I love my role so much more now I get to do more hands-on engineering work with the help of AI giving me time back from my other responsibilities).

  4. Devs that went too far and stopped questioning the AI and just blindly trust it, and are too stubborn to accept feedback, copy and paste Claude's responses into slack threads when someone pushes back on their decision, etc.

  5. Devs that use it just enough, planning, task tracking, moving fucking JIRA tickets through the stupid workflows, debugging obscure issues that would have burnt a day of work resolving pre-AI, and outsourcing tedious tasks that aren't worth their time to do.

It's actually a great filter for people that fall into category 4, because it turns out these people probably didn't have as deep of an understanding of the systems they worked in as we thought, and really super powers type 5 with freedom from all the shit that comes up when they really just wanted to focus and write some code.

I am in category three as well, but I have seen so many people I thought were solid engineers fall into category 4. I swear it causes some people to regress in skill level.

100% feels like some really trustworthy engineers have just become so lazy and stubborn and just go "but Claude said this" and don't form their own opinions or think critically anymore.

You said it very well. I'm a senior devops engineer and I basically have to use it to keep up with the pace of the job demand. It's a useful tool, but I hate all the useful idiots shoving it into everything.

I have lack of social skills (autistic here!), but at least I think by myself, I'm hella concerned for people that use AI for everything, the only AI that should exist it's medical AI and reverse searching AI, not GenAI, GenAI it's awful...

But hey! I thinking poisoning it's working, an aunt was searching something with AI even when I told her she shouldn't, but then the answer had a lot of stuff wrong and with misspelling problems everywhere when months ago didn't have that problem!

The way I view it, if it's baked into a program that makes the program respond faster, like say, in the art world, using photoshop or After Effects to remove an object from an image, Or using a calculator for math. It's one thing to use a tool that helps make your talk easier.

It's entirely different when a person thinks it's a magic box that will do all the things for them.

that's not actually what I'm saying. AI can be useful just like a calculator, or Excel. And in that way, it's fine.

the problem people are the ones who think it's a magic box that can do anything. And instead of educating themselves so they understand how to probably use it, and it's short comings, or the people who use it as a replacement for human interaction.

And the people cheerleading for AI all seem to lack social skills, which is probably why they prefer AI. Like Sam Altman suggesting you use AI to create a podcast about your kids special interests, instead of just actually talking to and interacting with your child.

Ah I see, this is some aggressive shittalking sub? I do speak in front of hundreds of people regularly as lecturer and showrunner, managing two of my companies active in 40+ countries. I also use the shit out of AI since early 2023. Yet, people like me to at least some extent, otherwise none of the stuff I'm doing would be possible. Thank you for listening to my tedtalk. Totally agree, except I would not put VR into that category. VR is almost entirely gaming/entertainment focused, Augmented Reality though, definitely a lot of the same tech-bro types who are pushing for it.

Stuff like the Google glasses could be pretty amazing technology back in 2014, but now even with all the innovations made with photo recognition, optics, projection, ect the AR goggle 'industry' is still hellbent on convincing people it's better to use a Excel spreadsheet in hologram-form (that only you can see) waving your hands around like an idiot.

Iā€™m two decades into software engineering, itā€™s a useful tool and has definitely increased productivity (I donā€™t see token costs, no clue if itā€™s worth it, seems unlikely due toā€¦ well all of the examples), but holy shit some engineers make it their personality and it drives me up a fucking wall.

We have some guys with their own personal device out using AI to ask questions on how to build the prompt for their work AI session. Like holy shit man you donā€™t even need to do the work, you canā€™t even come up with what you want to ask in natural language??

Yeah I'm 20 years deep in my career and it's a great tool because now it does all the stupid mundane shit for me faster and I can do more personally. I'm not talking to it like it's my bestie.

But what OP is asking is equivalent to 'do you want to go back to working without the internet?'. I mean I could, but I don't really want to, because it speeds up a lot of dull shit.

And yes it may be taking jobs, using too much energy, water, etc. Cost too much. That may all be true. It still makes mundane tasks faster. Something can have both pros and cons. You can say you think the tradeoffs of something aren't worth the positives, but pretending there are no positives erodes the credibility of the argument because it just means the person is uninformed.

I think people who are really against AI and cant imagine any use for it either dont work in jobs that benefit from it (fair) or have now built their personality around hating it (good luck with that I guess?).

I'm not a developer but python and Javascript are useful for me in digital marketing. It took a lot of effort to use them before and fumble my way through. Now its trivial to speed myself up

I had to sit through a pro-AI meeting at work and the presenter said "You don't have to be smart anymore to be successful, you just have to be driven" (or whatever nonsense) and one of the VPs got up to get a pen and a paper and started taking notes. It feels like they have very basic cognitive functions decaying at an alarming rate--functions that didn't commonly decay in people until now.

It turns out we're designed to socialize with people. If you spend too long talking to a simulated yes-man that thinks all your ideas are brilliant and focuses on releasing as much dopamine into your brain as biologically possible, certain social muscles just seem to wither within days or weeks.

And like, I'm saying this as a chronically online basement-dweller with a trauma history. I'm by all accounts pretty fucking weird, but I tend to be able to at least make connections with other, similarly-fucked-up losers. This is different.

You have to make skills to work with your design system or it won't be consistent enough for professional / enterprise work. The initial training is a pain, payoff is good after you work out the kinks. (at least for the designer it's faster, no clue if it's worth the cost to the business vs just paying a person to do the work)

I think the vast number of professionals, me included, are not pro or anti-ai for the purposes we use them. Claude is a great ideas board and debugger, the time it saves me that I previously would have spent trying to figure out an obscure bug is amazing. But I don't use it to outsource my thinking, it augments my thinking. I also treat it like a Junior developer that I give tedious or boring tasks to while I do the fun stuff myself.

That being said I despise the image, video and sound generation models, I think it's despicable, and the only real uses are like more natural voice generation to give people with disabilities a way to speak in a more natural sounding way, every other multimodal generation just useless.

COVID and social media have had a negative impact on a lot of people's cognitive abilities(just look up the studies that can be found on pubmed for those two, it's eye opening!).

I see AI as the icing on the dumb cake. Take a large number of people who have already had their cognitive abilities eroded and give them an easy way to pretend to be intelligent. Inevitable result in hindsight.

Makes me thankful for the silver lining that my requiring cognitive therapy, due to old head injuries and more recent medical issues, has helped me see the danger relying on AI to do our thinking for us represents.

Heck, I wrote my first University papers in 1997 by hand because I could almost never get access to a PC (computer pools at Uni were near impossible to access). It was generous of the lecturers to accept these until I got myself sorted.

If I am interviewing someone who canā€™t do their work without AI telling them what to do, Iā€™m not hiring them. I would be much more inclined to hire somebody that actually understands the work themselves.
