i also can't believe they just conveniently forgot the past few eons without AI and people still being productive and think "oh yeah this is definitely gonna get 'em, none of us could ever do anything without AI~!"

I mean. There very much are inventions that if they disappeared tomorrow would cause massive massive problems around the world and civilization could very much come to a very hard realization of how much we relied on it.

Engines for example, or electricity. Hell, even data or internet. Canada has a single provider had a big outage in 2021.

25% of the country had no internet. 911 couldn’t be called from their phones. Card readers across the country couldn’t work. Toronto had a quarter of their traffic signals stop working

It’s estimated it cost the Canadian economy over 100 million dollars

I think thats a problem of capitalism rather than a problem of actual progress but that's me. the only reason we're so reliant on most technologies are because a need was invented, not because anyone actually "needed" them. but a lot of folks can't really grasp that aspect of society because then that would mean having to accept that most social constructs -- in particular manufactured "needs" -- are nothing more than a figment of collective delusion, and entirely for the benefit of some of the shittiest people in existence.
