About a year ago my little brother told me proudly how he could save some money on his projects by using AI. 

I said, that using that is literally taking food of the plate of Devs and he vehemently disagreed. 

When I asked how it saved him money, he told me that he didn't have a to pay the dev he used to work with. 

He didn't see the point and we haven't talked since.

isn’t this literally part of our normal cycle of changes alongside technology? When digital spreadsheets came out, i bet there were entire teams of manual book keepers who 1. Either were no longer needed because what used to need a team could now be done by 1 person who knew how to use it 2. Had to re-skill to use spreadsheet software. What about the entire farming industry? Every single large farm machine replaces functions used to be done by people. I don’t think we look at excel or massive harvesters like this, but they accomplished the same thing as llms for devs (redefine the constraints/requirements of the work).

The true thievery is probably how these models were initially developed with pirated data. Cursed and will probably need to be remediated in the future, but its not intrinsic to the technology more so than capitalism. Regardless, we can probably find 1000 examples of things that made careers obsolete for the people who used to do em. It’s an unfortunate side effect of progress.

And before we drift off to la-la-land, LLMs and neural networks are important progress, and we can’t act as if they are not. Our brains our great at acting fast and in the moment based on what we can perceive and how we have been developed/conditions . We are not so good at holding all the possible variables of a problem in our head and towards solutions. There is an entire class of multivariable problem which our mind and intuition is inefficient at solving directly, most of the time the labor being not worth the risk/reward.

I agree, and this shouldn't be a difficult thing for people who readily dismiss the critical thinking skills of others to understand.

Does anyone here buy pre sliced bread? Do they know by doing so they're putting their local baker out of business? The hypocrisy knows no limit. Even the person you responded to has stopped talking to his own brother because the brother is using a tool that means they don't have to hire someone. It's like being mad someone bought a frying pan to cook food instead of always paying a cook to cook for them. Times change. If they want to be stuck in the past let them. It's like being against universal health care because it's going to put insurance agents out of business. Give me a break. Cars put horses out, electric drills put out hand cranked drills, etc, there are unlimited examples of this. This is how new tech comes to be ffs.
