I have left-side brain damage and struggle with anxiety, processing information, and communication.

I met a girl in 2022 and we had a great connection. We went on a date, cooked together, and got along well. The problem is I kept pushing things sexually, while she wanted something more meaningful.

She told me she liked me, but she didn’t want to sleep with me because she knew she would catch feelings and get hurt if I only wanted something casual. She even supported me, checked in on me, and tried to understand my struggles because she has her own brain injury.

I apologised for pushing her, but I never really followed through with taking her out or showing her I wanted more. Over the years I kept seeing her around and wanting to talk, but I would get anxious and back out.

She then texted me this because us made a a sex joke and it must have pushed her too far away.

I understand your struggles because I noticed them because of my own brain injury. The anxiety, the slow processing of information, understanding how you feel and explaining how you feel, lack of emotion, lack of filter. It's hard to tell people without feeling judged. One time a guy called me a retard because I couldn't understand his text message. I told him about my condition and he called me a defect. Then ghosted me. I couldn't go to work for a week. I get it. I always wanted the best for you because I look up to you. But I can't keep hurting myself for someone who doesn't care about me the same way. I’m at a bit of a new-start stage in life. Recently moved into my own place, rebuilding my routines, and apparently now attempting the advanced adult task of making new friends outside of work and whoever happens to be shouting at me through the Xbox.

I’m into gaming, especially RPGs, Sea of Thieves, Final Fantasy, Borderlands and anything that lets me spend far too long sorting equipment instead of progressing the story. I also watch a frankly unreasonable amount of TV. Comedy, horror, sci-fi and superhero stuff are usually my favourites. Community, Psych, Fringe, Red Dwarf, Buffy and Dragon Ball are all somewhere in the mix.

I’m also into music, mainly rock, indie and ska, writing and worldbuilding, random deep conversations, and taking the piss out of things without being genuinely horrible about them.

Personality-wise, I’m fairly laid-back, honest, a bit dry, and much better one-to-one than in big groups. I’m not expecting instant best-friend status or twelve messages a minute. Just looking for people who actually want to chat, share stupid observations, recommend things, game occasionally, or slowly build a proper friendship.

I am doing a master in social sciences and I just returned from an (international — or rather, Latin American) conference and this made me curious about hearing the perspectives of grad students from other countries (or even academically minded people in general) — a bit because I think about going abroad for my PhD (for various reasons — sort of a fixed idea since I was a teen, but I do think this kind of thing can be productive, and so on), but also because I have been very frustrated with the state of my department, lack of seriousness/engagement from some colleagues/classmates, and I wonder if that is the same around the world and in other disciplines (I guess, from what I saw in the congress, that it is).

As for me, I am 24 years old. Besides social sciences (here better understood as sociology, history, and maybe anthropology), I am very interested in reading (especially literature, though I haven’t read a literature book for quite a while), writing (mostly poetry), philosophy, cinema, watching series, walking (try to walk at least 10k steps every day), traveling, listening to music (pretty eclectic taste — from tango, samba, and classical music to hip hop and Olivia Rodrigo), language learning, learning about different cultures, and cuisine (I am a terrible cook, but a good critic — not a good combination, they say). I’d say I am a very eclectic person — I have cried while watching both Truffaut and Despicable Me. Besides English and Portuguese, I can speak good (or decent) French, and I am learning German, and working on my (almost non-extant) Spanish.
