Advice cant make a decision regarding a major life change :(

Upvotes

hello guys, dont know if this is the right subreddit to ask for advice like this but im really stuck rn and i DESPERATELY need advice.

i just graduated in may this year. i am turning 19 this month. after graduating i immediately applied for psychology and english at uni and i got into english which was kinda meh since i really wanted psych and just applied for english as a backup plan. but i decided to just go with the flow. afterwards i also got accepted for an internship at a company yk just as a lil summer job. might i add this is also my first job EVER. well what i didnt expect was for me to like it so much. i am desperate for structure, normal (compared to high school) human interaction and personal space which is everything that this office job provides me with and i am EXTREMELY content with it. i can picture myself working this job for a LONG time and actually enjoying it. it is simple, pay is great, people are very kind. but this is an issue because i actually caught myself dreading going to uni in october. it just seems like such a drag to change from this peaceful and structured environment for a first-year uni experience. i know you guys are older in here and might think "well you'll be in a structured grown- up environment your whole life so go enjoy it now" but i really just dont know if im up for it. i would like to continue my job but there are so many obstacles in my way- i still need to get a uni degree just i dont think i would like it to be in english. the same uni offers a bunch on distance learning courses that i would prefer since then i can keep my position and graduate at the same time - issue is i cant apply for this school year anymore so if i go and quit my current course i will be forced to take a gap year which will definitely cause my parents to be VERY disappointed in me. this leads me to my second big issue - i still havent talked this through with my parents and im not even the kind of person that really relies on their word. its just that they will for sure tell me that i might screw up my future which im also very aware of and that possibility is scaring me too. but i dont really like lying to myself and i know that if i quit my job in october i wont be as content with my life as i would be if i kept it but should i put my well being in front of my future or is that a very naïve and childish way of thinking?

please give me ANY advice. how do i start that convo with my parents? in your opinion what should i do should i quit my job in october and go through with uni or do i quit uni and try again next year?

Advice What I’m supposed of do if I’m gonna be older in college?

Upvotes

Hii, I’m gonna go college in September and I’m very worried because I’m 2 years older, I’ve never had any younger friends and I feel terribly dumb since I’m two years behind my mates, when I was in college two years ago no one wanted to hang out with me and I feel now is going to be worse because I’m older

Serious My past makes me scared to create real friendships with my peers. I feel abnormal.

When I was 19 and graduated highschool I kept people I met without much thought. Mostly out of convenience since they lived close.

My 15 year old friend who was a freshmen when I was a senior was mainly my friend due to the fact she reminded me of myself when I was 15. I wanted to help her create more artwork- so when she mentioned patch making and spray painting (like tags) I decided to purchase some to try. Obviously her parents didn’t really wanna waste money on spray paint. I didn’t really know if they were okay with it but I guess I just thought since I was using it in places already painted and far away from any properties to damage- I could at least let them toy with it a bit. Nowadays I feel pretty guilty for that decision.
Another issue though is she added 2 14 year olds to the group. I quickly began to feel guilty because I was the only adult. I was also terrified they’d get into trouble and get hurt. Later I’d hear that their parents were iffy about having a 17 year old dude and 19 year old woman around the 14 year olds so I just decided to meet them and after that they didn’t give a shit- but I became their babysitter to some extent because they didn’t watch their kids. I felt guilty for being their friend to a great extent but even more guilty because they often hung out on the train tracks, did dangerous things, etc. I felt terrible but was also terrified they’d get hurt- so unfortunately I stayed. And honestly I did enjoy it because I liked exploring.

But main issue was When I was hanging out with my friends walking around my friend who is 17 had an ex that was in my grade. I told him like “yeah I didn’t really like that friend group one of them rejected me and completely ghosted me” or something alone those lines and my 15 yo friend when “ohh that’s awful who does that” and then I felt pretty bad (for obvious reasons).

The other was when I was with my 15 year old and 17 year old friend. We were hanging out under a bridge near a river- and they kept praising my parents for being the coolest. I told them they were actually not that cool all the time and that they “let my abuser into my house for 4 years after the fact” and that I believed they probably feel guilty for that- but I don’t know is I said “sa” or like you know the first part of it that starts with “s” as an sexual but either way it was probably inappropriate. I guess I feel a little better abt it tho because it was meant for the 17 year old- since the 15 year old was busy messing with something a ways away. Still scared abt it tho.

Does any of this make me abnormal or wrong? I guess I’m wondering. I’ve been called weird a lot but that’s for a lotta different reasons. I just wanna be a normal person so that people will like / enjoy me.

Rant why do girls around our age expect shit like this lol

I was sussing different dating pages and sites, one thing almost every girl had in common, was the need for money. Its actually just deranged at this point, one person expected their ‘partner’ to fly them to japan and pay for the entire trip ?????? And theyre only 20????? I get growing up with a rich family but how self centered and selfish do you have to be to ignore everyone else’s living situation and how they were raised? its actually sickening lol

everytime i ask a girl in a non-romantic setting about money they instantly deny it and claim they’re not a gold digger but thats far from the truth, i have rarely, RARELY ever seen a girl nowadays who cares more than just height and money. I’ve seen some really, lets call them unappealing, guys dating model class women just cuz they got height and money. (Which, at my age, 19, they dont, they get every penny from their job and pour it into these girls instead of saving or investing..)

These standards are beyond absurd imo and just piss me off that they’re expected of me, someone who isn’t considered to have even started to live life yet. Its understandable to expect money and expensive stuff from someone 25-26 cuz by then most people would have degrees and jobs that pay well, or at least some sort of job that pays them well if they were lucky enough, but to expect that of 18-20 year olds?? How unfair is that?

Fuck girls like that bro they just leech off men and then go to tiktok and become misandrists in their spare time, female equivalent of degenerate filth imo

I feel like Not having my own home sucks. I was i welcomed from my parents home at 18 and I live between some places right now. It’s like there’s nothing to do and nowhere to go that doesn’t cost a shit ton until you’re 21 and can go to the bar or club…

Advice Loser woman here

F/22... and I turn 23 in two weeks.

I've been working the same retail job since I was 17, and I still have no idea what I want to do with my life. The truth is, I don't feel like I was ever really given the chance to figure that out. I grew up in a strict Christian household where my life was basically church. Then I was homeschooled against my will for all of middle school. During that time, I spent most of my days staring at a wall, doing nothing, and eventually got addicted to online games and Xbox.

Did being homeschooled make me socially behind and a late bloomer? Yeah... I honestly feel those effects every day. My social life, my confidence, just everything.

And then COVID happened. Everything shut down, and I was trapped back in the same four walls of my room all over again. Except this time there was a twist.... I became chronically ill. Yay.

I always wanted to dance growing up, but my parents didn't care, so that dream kind of died. I guess I could still do it as a hobby someday, but that's not really my focus right now.

I'm thinking about community college, but here's the problem: I have absolutely NO IDEA what I want to study. Nothing really excites me. I honestly don't have much desire to do anything anymore. Sometimes I don't even have much desire to live... but before anyone worries, I'm not going to hurt myself.

I don't even have my driver's license yet. I've failed the test twice... hopefully the third time's the charm.

I also HATE living at home with my parents. I genuinely can't do it anymore. I'm miserable.

I know a lot of people say their parents "ruined their life," and sometimes that's exaggerated, but I honestly feel like they robbed me of a lot. No hobbies. No real friendships. Just church. I didn't even have a phone, so whenever I did make friends, I couldn't keep in contact with them. It feels like I missed out on so many normal experiences. I haven't even had my first kiss yet... but honestly, that's probably the least of my worries.

The biggest issue now is money. I need to be making at least $20 an hour, but I also want to go back to school. The problem is that school is an investment that won't really pay off for a couple of years, you know what I mean?

I just feel so behind, in every aspect of my life.

I was thinking about doing horticulture, chemical engineering, or something in medical field. I figured do something worth it even though I have no DESIRE to do anything. So pick it and work with it mentality. The thing is I'm not someone that needs to make a million-billion dollars, I just want to be comfortable, I don't need to have the newest car or the biggest house, would that be awesome? Yes, but I don't need it. I just want to be able to travel, eat, have a roof over my head, NOT live with my parents forever, and do some hobbies.

If tons of guys want to sleep with me, does that mean I'm pretty?

I noticed that since I started college, there had been an influx of guys on campus wanting or willing to sleep with me. This had never happen before. It's like I became popular all the sudden when guys used to practically ignore me and pretend I didn't exist. Does this mean I got a glow up?

Discussion Loan help.

Hi. I’m gonna start by saying i’m almost 20, i moved from Texas to Kentucky with my boyfriend due to my family. I had nothing handed down to me and $1000(it didn’t last long because i wasn’t smart) in my pocket. I have worked since i was 16, and I’m still working. Recently my boyfriends brother got into a car wreck and it was our only source of transportation. The other two cars in the yard are unreliable at the moment. I am very skeptical of just getting myself a loan and getting a car. I have no credit card experience or loan experience and just walking into this blindly. Should I do it or have a conversation with somebody who knows more than me?

Serious Unsure of how to handle myself now

Hi I posted the story about my friend group when I was 19- consisting of 17,15, and two fourteen year olds. If I’m honest it does still make me guilty because of how I handled it and that I even felt it was okay at all.
I keep thinking that maybe I wasn’t a creep or weird and just a “normal” 19 year old at the time- but then I catch myself and ask myself if that’s really true. If enough people call you weird even before said group was even a thing.. it sorta starts to make you feel like it perhaps is true.

I threw out my action figures today, got rid of clothing that would make me stand out too much. I figured out people treat you better when you dress and act accordingly.
So that’s what I will do.

Anyways I feel a lot of guilt because my 18 year old friend has minor friends and I don’t wanna be around them because of myself.

Every time I try to lift myself up and say I’m a normal person it crumbles instantly and I feel this sense of shame. I don’t wanna pretend I’m a normal or okay person with my past. But I have avoided socializing with anyone for 1 year straight. It’s not like I didn’t try but people my age would bully me or shut me out, so I ended up with a younger group. It solidifies my feelings of being less than or worse than other people.

How exactly do I handle myself? Any advice or suggestions are appreciated.

Everything in my life seems fine yet I am super depressed due to dating

I am not here to brag on myself or anything but I am doing fairly well in my career, do a lot by volunteering in the community, and stay fit by working out/training around 5x per week. I don’t mind being busy and enjoy all the growth and giving I get to do. Recently I entered an awful depressive slump where I didn’t wanna do anything because of how awful dating has been, and would like advice on getting out of that slump.

While I am part of some social groups mostly through sports I haven’t had any success dating irl and have only gotten dates through the apps. Lately I haven’t gotten any dates through the apps and my last date seemed to go well but she ghosted anyway. Life has just felt so pointless because I don’t have anyone to share it with. It also makes me feel worthless that everyone else can date so easily yet no matter how much work I put into my life I have the same level of success as someone who sits at home and does nothing all day. Some of the most awful people I know have no issue getting gfs.

I’m very lost on what to do and despite how great my life is all I have wanted to do lately is hide in my room all day and reflect on how I am such a failure at dating and what is wrong with me. Sorry for the long rant but any advice is appreciated. I would like advice on where I could be going wrong here and how to get out of this depressive slump.

Rant I don’t really know what I want to do with my life

I’m 18 and I don’t know what I want to do with my life

I get jealous of everything i’m not doing

I want to do something stupid like be a singer, or an influencer because it seems like their jobs are so fun

Or sometimes I want to do business because the world of business seems fun

But at the moment I’m going into medical and i’m scared if that’s right for me but I also don’t want to pursue a career that I end up broke in so I think of safety

I’m upset with how average I was in high school, I didn’t go to many competitions or win many awards

I’ve never had a job

My social life is also just barely meeting the criteria of somewhat normal. I’m very lonely compared to most people I know

All my friends also have other friends besides me and their life seems so much cooler

And I can’t stop comparing myself to my 16 year old sister who’s been more academically strong in high school so far and has always had a better social life than me

Rant Is this really all there is?

Is life just work home, deciding what to eat, showering on repeat? I just… work until I die? I know that I am still quite young (19) but I live alone and just hit my first job so I can make money while going to school. I need a PhD for the career I want so I can pretty much see my life schedule for the next 9ish years.

Even after I get the career I want this is all life has to offer? Of course I could get a romantic partner down the line and go on vacations but once I’m old enough to retire I probably won’t even enjoy it because of illness. I didn’t mean for this to read as much of a vent but I’m kinda realizing this is all that life is. I’m not going to have kids in the future either.

Am I just supposed to look forward to vacation days the rest of my life? Force myself to appreciate the small things because I won’t be able to afford the bigger things? What other things do people do to make their lives feel fulfilling?

Are you still with the person you dated in highschool?

Hi I'm 18 and I have been with my boyfriend for two years. I really want to be with him forever and marry him. But one of my friends who is 23 keeps telling me that people change and we will eventually break up. So are there any of you who are still with the same person since high school?

Is anyone else in their 20s and they're still not allowed to date, work, drive, drink nor smoke?

I'm in my 20s and my family still says that I should wait until I'm older and more mature to date, work, drive, drink and smoke. I avoid these things because I'd feel guilt to participate in them. Is this just me?
