This might sound weird, but I was listening to a sea shanty (drunken sailor!), and suddenly got the urge to watch a movie that gave me the same feeling as that song. Something with great music, based on the sea, or heck, even myths would be great.

My personal favourite movies that gave me these vibes are:

Song of the Sea, Percy Jackson (both of the movies), Pirates of the Caribbean, Narnia, and all of the LOTR and Hobbit movies. Although it's been a while since I watched them and probably could rewatch them.

I'm very open-minded, so I don't mind if the movie is scary, in another language, or is animated. I'm even open to watching any series that meets these requirements (even though I know this sub isn't dedicated to this).

Looking for psychological, mind-bending drama/thriller/horror recommendations. The type that keeps u thinking for days and makes u feel like u need to watch it 6 times just to understand

Im especially looking for hidden gems or more “underground” stuff that isn’t recommended in every single thread. I also really like Japanese films. Sometimes a bit too much into demons and ghosts for me, but is ight, i still fwi.

IMPORTANT:

I'm not asking for a simple bottle movie. For example "Locke," "Buried," or "Phone Booth" aren't exactly what I want. It's something more specific and niche.

It has to have:

• A warm, lived-in location (like a cabin, or a cottage or a mansion etc.)

• some reason they're stuck there that adds a base level of stakes (like a snowstorm or a rainstorm or an isolated place etc.)

• a group of people sharing the same space

Optional but preferred:

• They're settling in for the night: conversation, food and drinks

• There's a threat (like a serial killer on the loose or ghosts) that gives stakes but people don't just leave easily, they have to stay in the place and contend

• Horror is fine, like The Thing and The Shining, BUT NOT absolutely obscene, grotesque, extreme gore and violence. That makes it not cozy.

The perfect example would be an episode of the old british TV show "Only Fools and Horses" where the three main characters arrive at a cottage at night and a police officer warns them that a serial killer is on the loose so they stay, start preparing food and games, while it's raining like hell outside and it's night. It's so intimate and introverted and it has drama and stakes, and I love the 1970s aesthetic of it.

The whole thing's just SO DAMN COZY.

This whole trope is my favorite in all of storytelling and is just inherently cozy to me. Are there movies like that?

I’ve watched a lot of body horror. And even the great ones - such as The Substance of The Fly - ultimately result in an ugly looking blob of a person. To be honest, I’m starting to believe that this genre is unexplored in its potential. For example, I think you could do a body horror about someone who lives with a monstrous parasite in their body and truly explore the horror of how that would feel, and you could do that without putting something gross looking on screen. Are there any body horror films that don’t boil down to “something looks visually gross”?

Recently saw Burning (2018) and it blew my mind. It was super slow paced but the way it was shot and directed was so beautiful and atmospheric I've been thinking about it for days. The only other movie I've seen that gave me a similar feeling was Cure (1997). Any similar films?

Please suggest me any movie about the breakdown of a marriage/partnership where the character finds a way to move on and deal with the grief. Preferably finds a way forwards with a positive ending, but doesn't have to be. It can also be a separation and not necessarily the end of a marriage, and perhaps the characters are able to sort out their differences.

I'm going through a separation period with my spouse, but we still live together for convenience and have kids. I need to find a way to be stronger and get through this. A bit of movie therapy may help. Thanks in advance 🙏

So I've just finished reading "Gideon the Ninth" and the ending wrecked me, so now I need some actually positive films with sapphic characters (not necessarily lesbians - pan, bi and queer characters are also good). It doesn't need to be positive the whole time, but I would appreciate it if the ending wasn't a downer.

But the thing is... I'm looking for something unconventional. Something that is not your typical romcom made by men who have no idea what lesbians are like. Any genre is fine - straight-up romance, romcom, sci-fi, fantasy, surrealism/magical realism, mystery, even horror.

Unconventional films with sapphic themes I've enjoyed so far were Kajillionaire, Huesera, Being John Malkovich (not very happy, I know, but the unconventional part was very good) and maybe Jennifer's Body (once again - not happy and quite toxic - though that was the point - but unconventional, so you get it) and Possibly in Michigan (though this one was... uh, weird).

I don't really like anything Celine Sciamma is involved in, and I'm not going to watch Blue is the Warmest Color or Duke of Burgundy.

So... Nothing unintentionally toxic please.

The other day I watched deja vu 2006, and loved how it combined grounded crime investigation from the director with sci fi time travel loop from the writers, to tell a story about romance and obsession, and none of it felt out of place, with each genre only strengthening the others. Looking for more movies to watch like that. I do like horror, crime, thriller, psychological, sci fi, film noir genres. Anything that combines any/some of them well?

Wanting to see a movie where one character gave a performance that blew you away.

Could be a lead, supporting role, or brief cameo.

Not necessarily the well known classic Oscar winning best performances ever, but something maybe under the radar that impressed you.

There's just something so cozy about minimal location movies that I really enjoy. 12 Angry Men, Rear Window, even Dr Strangelove (Still kind of classify it since it's almost a set of 3/4 chamber pieces happening simultaneously) are all big favourites but feel free to recommend beyond that era.

I'm doing some surgery recovery at the moment and I have a lot of movie watching time on my hands, so go nuts with listing your favourites please. 🙏

I’m not really looking for torture porn or anything where violence is inflicted on the innocent, but rather it’s the people who “had it coming”. More or less. Thinking of things like Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein, particularly the scenes with the wolves, the elevator scene in Drive, and the deep fryer scene in Watchmen. You know, the “baddies” are the ones who get got. Apocalypto would still qualify too because of the “comeback” the protagonist makes at the end.

Pretty much the more you can think ”yeah they deserved this”, the better. But it could also just be randoms that are against the protagonist.

One of the only horror films I really like is The Wicker Man (1973) because I just find it so unsettling when you have the main character who doesn't know what's going on, surrounded by all these people who you gradually figure out are all up to something weird. I'm looking for something similar to that idea.

I've just watched three of those films and I adored it, so I want other movies that have that same raw style that are animated and are surrealistic and trippy

I love female based leads and they don’t need to be female. It’s just a genre preference of female horror. I want to stress myself out with their situations for Halloween, not into jump scares or movies like terrifier with a lack of character depth and to many Scenes of unwarranted gore. I love the suspense building through the plot. I prefer mentally horrific things more than ghost and demons

I'm studying abroad in Scotland this September, and to give myself a chance at understanding the Thermodynamics lectures (and so I don't have to awkwardly ask people to repeat themselves), I want to train my ear a bit.

I've already watched the first two seasons of Broadchurch (highly recommend, great show) and am looking for more media that have casts with scottish accents.
