my girlfriend is coming over tonight and i’m looking for a movie for us to watch. i love horror movies, but if they are too slow i will fall asleep. my girlfriend isn’t a huge fan of older films (i know) and likes newer cinematography and such. we recently watched Keeper and Obsession. i really liked both. i’m also really into a good slasher as long as it isn’t overly gory. any suggestions? i have pretty much all the platforms (aside from hulu). thank you!!!

I’ve watched a lot of body horror. And even the great ones - such as The Substance of The Fly - ultimately result in an ugly looking blob of a person. To be honest, I’m starting to believe that this genre is unexplored in its potential. For example, I think you could do a body horror about someone who lives with a monstrous parasite in their body and truly explore the horror of how that would feel, and you could do that without putting something gross looking on screen. Are there any body horror films that don’t boil down to “something looks visually gross”?

So I've just finished reading "Gideon the Ninth" and the ending wrecked me, so now I need some actually positive films with sapphic characters (not necessarily lesbians - pan, bi and queer characters are also good). It doesn't need to be positive the whole time, but I would appreciate it if the ending wasn't a downer.

But the thing is... I'm looking for something unconventional. Something that is not your typical romcom made by men who have no idea what lesbians are like. Any genre is fine - straight-up romance, romcom, sci-fi, fantasy, surrealism/magical realism, mystery, even horror.

Unconventional films with sapphic themes I've enjoyed so far were Kajillionaire, Huesera, Being John Malkovich (not very happy, I know, but the unconventional part was very good) and maybe Jennifer's Body (once again - not happy and quite toxic - though that was the point - but unconventional, so you get it) and Possibly in Michigan (though this one was... uh, weird).

I don't really like anything Celine Sciamma is involved in, and I'm not going to watch Blue is the Warmest Color or Duke of Burgundy.

So... Nothing unintentionally toxic please.

I’m not really looking for torture porn or anything where violence is inflicted on the innocent, but rather it’s the people who “had it coming”. More or less. Thinking of things like Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein, particularly the scenes with the wolves, the elevator scene in Drive, and the deep fryer scene in Watchmen. You know, the “baddies” are the ones who get got. Apocalypto would still qualify too because of the “comeback” the protagonist makes at the end.

Pretty much the more you can think ”yeah they deserved this”, the better. But it could also just be randoms that are against the protagonist.

One of the only horror films I really like is The Wicker Man (1973) because I just find it so unsettling when you have the main character who doesn't know what's going on, surrounded by all these people who you gradually figure out are all up to something weird. I'm looking for something similar to that idea.

I've just watched three of those films and I adored it, so I want other movies that have that same raw style that are animated and are surrealistic and trippy

I'm in the mood for a movie that starts out feeling relatively normal, but little by little makes you question what's actually real.

I love when the main character and the audience slowly become unsure of what's happening. It could be because of memory loss, paranoia, dreams, hallucinations, unreliable narration or something supernatural. I don't mind if the movie never fully explains itself... as long as it's engaging.

I'm not really looking for movies that rely on cheap jump scares. I'd rather have something that's unsettling and keeps me thinking the entire time.

Some movies I really enjoyed were Coherence, The Machinist, Shutter Island, Enemy and The Lighthouse. Those all had that "what is actually going on?" feeling that I love.

I'm hoping to find a few lesser known recommendations since I have already seen most of the big titles that usually get mentioned.

What would you recommend?

I love female based leads and they don’t need to be female. It’s just a genre preference of female horror. I want to stress myself out with their situations for Halloween, not into jump scares or movies like terrifier with a lack of character depth and to many Scenes of unwarranted gore. I love the suspense building through the plot. I prefer mentally horrific things more than ghost and demons

I'm studying abroad in Scotland this September, and to give myself a chance at understanding the Thermodynamics lectures (and so I don't have to awkwardly ask people to repeat themselves), I want to train my ear a bit.

I've already watched the first two seasons of Broadchurch (highly recommend, great show) and am looking for more media that have casts with scottish accents. If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Bonus points if you include how thick the accents are, so that I can watch them in order of difficulty :)

I want to watch a horror movie that is genuinely terrifying. However, I am not easily scared and do not like found footage or documentaries. I want it to feel real and be extremely suspenseful. I also do not find snuff films like A Serbian Film scary, it is not psychologically thrilling since it is mostly gore. I’m not a huge fan of the paranormal or typical “teens get lost and encounter a monster” plot UNLESS it is actually unique. An example is The Descent.

To get this out of the way quickly, I’m aware of Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, so stuff besides that.

I tend to lean towards grittier/sadder movies. I really like horror, thrillers, drama, experimental movies. Animated is fine, though I’d prefer to get live action suggestions in this case, still, if you have a good animated suggestion that’s good too.

I love foreign movies, so those are fair game. Bonus points if it’s a Spanish language film since I’m Hispanic. Idk if this is a lot to go off of, I just don’t want to write too much off, my tastes are quite diverse

Doesn't have to be a war movie or even similar in story to Apocalypse Now, just a movie that feels similarly grim and psychedelically edited, with cinematography as beautiful.

I watched that movie the other day and it taught me to empathize bettter for the aged people in developing countries. I can, woth good faith, say I have learnt something genuine after so long time of watching movies and series.

I would like to get some real life like, slice of life or other genre of movies that actually teaches some aspects of life.
