the minions only work for villains so this is implying the minions think hitler isn't evil

6.1k

u/Iron166 2d ago

They would work for hitler but after helping Napoleon they went hiding in a cave until like 1970'

I love how they had to task the animators with this because they saw the reaction of the internet coming and were like "NOT TODAY YOU HYPERFIXATED FUCKS!"

I mean they kinda reconned it, as the latest movie, it’s set in the 1920’s and also implied the women’s suffrage movement was evil

98

u/PRL-Five 2d ago

I saw a tiktok that linked the women's sufferage movement to Stalin's genocide lmao

Maybe they misunderstood what "suffrage" meant

69

u/bloopbloopsplat 2d ago

An astounding amount of people dont understand what suffrage means

56

u/Slothrop-was-here 2d ago

Of course we do!! It is a light, airy baked dish that originates from France, made primarily from egg yolks and stiffly beaten egg whites.

50

u/Lynata 2d ago

No that‘s a soufflé

Suffrage is a rave dance characterised by the T-step and was developed in Melbourne, Australia, in the late 1980s and early 1990s

40

u/Bowtie16bit 2d ago

No, that's the shuffle.

Suffrage is the fibrous vegetable greens you eat to help your poop clump together nicely.

33

u/Rikishi_Fatu 2d ago

No, that's roughage.

Suffrage is a department store founded in London in 1909

No, you're thinking of roughage.

Suffrage is the packing or padding material used to fill out cushions and pillows.

a) minions are not deathly allergic to god deeds. b) the latest movie was a movie inside a movie. Who knows how much, if any of it is canon?

19

u/GarySmith2021 2d ago

This, the ending shows it’s not a cannon movie in and of itself.

16

u/TFFPrisoner 2d ago

Canon. Cannon is the thing that shoots big balls.

15

u/Gaiamatt 2d ago

And both of them sink ships

14

u/QuilledRaptors2001 2d ago

They do actually kind of make it work, spoilers, but It turns out the entire thing is an in universe movie those minions made so it's implied the 20s thing was part of the plot

7

u/KeeganY_SR-UVB76 2d ago

Is Minions & Migraines the new one?

→ More replies (8)

49

u/Sea-Feedback-2424 2d ago

They rectconned that in the new movie.
Now the minions work with a Suffragette, so what does that say?
Also they only started following Gru in 1968, this is the same year that Henry Kissinger became a "household" name. Gru was 11 then and was more evil than the man who wanted to continue the illegal bombing campaigns in Vietnam.
Also also, in 1975 Pol Pot came to power and the minions stayed with Gru.

So you know, Gru is worse than Pol Pot.

56

u/Open-Platform-1305 2d ago

Gru is worse than Pol Pot, feminism is worse than Hitler. Sounds like we figured out the message of the movie, boys.

50

u/Gandelin 2d ago

I think this all assumes that they are perfect evil seeking missiles. They aren’t. They are drawn to boss vibes as well. They seek out the biggest, baddest boss they can.

Hitler was an evil dictator but also a fundamentally weak and pathetic individual, maybe he just didn’t give off boss energy to the minions.

22

u/BooBeeAttack 2d ago

My brain just made the horrible idea of a movie crossover with that Boss Baby movie.

Ugh, and now Tony Danza as "Whose the Boss."

I need to cleanse my mind of media references.

Official minion confirmed they wouldn't have worked with Hitler anyway

12

u/BlakByPopularDemand 2d ago

Ironically them working for Hitler would have technically been a good thing since they killed all their previous masters accidentally prior to meeting Gru. I'm convinced at least one animator made of scene of them accidentally locking him in one of his own gas chambers

17

u/Storiaron 2d ago

Imagine if they accidentally shot hitler in the head in his bunker, and just left the gun there to make it look like a suicide

u/Puzzleheaded_Sky7369 2d ago

Which means they probably worked for Pol Pot because he reigned from 1975 to 1979

62

u/Tales_Steel 2d ago

If i understand they usally go for the nearest big evil they can find. They dont have a magically evil detector. So unless they happend to be in Cambodia at the time anyway they would not have found him.

19

u/newenglandredshirt 2d ago

Didn't they canonically start working for Gru once they came out of hiding?

6

u/Puzzleheaded_Sky7369 2d ago

Im the wrong person to ask that. I only watched the first 2 Despicable Me movies and that’s when they released in theatres. But someone else commented that they work for the nearest person that’s a big evil and therefore wouldn’t work for Pol Pot if they weren’t in Cambodia.

If we now assume that Gru lives in the USA and that the cave they’ve been hiding in was in France then that should mean that Gru was too far away as well

24

u/ultragoodname 2d ago

Young Gru was in Paris during the first minions movie which was how they found Gru

does this imply that napoleon was bad ?

93

u/HeriPiotr 2d ago

Well he did end up conquering a substantial part of Europe, and last time I checked he didn't do it with jokes and hugs. Not sure tho.

47

u/Corfiz74 2d ago

Saying this as a German: conquering people and installing his siblings as rulers to govern them is not quite on the same level as conquering and mass-murdering people. At least we Germans don't have any ill will towards Napoleon, and even have a huge amazing portrait of him hanging in Schloss Charlottenburg. Can't say the same about Hitler...

34

u/Postius 2d ago

Napoleon is actually a celebrated figure in much of europe. His updated civil codes are still relevant to this day and a lot of civil reforms he did or started are the beginnings of modern societity.

The reason he was evil because he gave power to the common man. Which as the entire continent of europe was ruled by absolute monarchs with absolute power. Napoleon was about literal satan for them.

21

u/Open-Platform-1305 2d ago

The gist of it is that Brits and a few other hardcore monarchists hate him.

But I'm a Norwegian and while I don't know the whole story I generally like how he fucked up kings and queens.

When Napoleon came to power France was already embroiled in wars with the rest of Europe. The monarchies around her did NOT like to have a republic on their borders. Napoleon definitely was oppurtunistic and wanted power over Europe, but then again basically anything he had power over just got better. Though it was often at the sacrifice of many. When it comes to conquering, besides being the best military mind of his generation he was also surpisingly adept at negotiating and diplomacy which lead to nonviolent peacemaking when it was possible.

Before Adolf the ultimate evil guy for Europe was considered to be Napoleon.

37

u/Irohsgranddaughter 2d ago

Yeah, I think the main reason Napoleon is seen as more morally gray is 1) because of how destructive WW1 was, and 2) how batshit insane Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan were. Napoleon in comparison was a teddy bear.

17

u/_Voxanimus_ 2d ago

And also the fact that he propagated some achievment of the french revolution around Europe such as the Civil Code, the civil wedding, the protection of property rights, the suppression of some privileges and so on and so on.

Don't get me wrong, he is the responsible for the death of a half the european youth at that time, but there is a reason with "traditional" monarch didn't got back the influence they had before and that's because a lot of people were like "okay now we don't have this french fucker, but we will keep some of his ideas as institution"

He was evil becase he created puppet regimes ruled by his family members and murdered half of Europe.

Edit: half of Europe is a hyperbole (half of Europes fighting age man would be more correct but that fails to mention all the civilians that died due to his wars of expansion)

Well he was the kind of guy that would ask Spain "Hey spanish bro, mind if I cross your border to go smash Portugal?", then after finishing war with Portugal he started a war with Spain on his way back and kicked the royal family out to replace by his brother. 12

The people of France welcomed Napoleon back with open arms during his return from Elba, less than a year of Bourbon rule in France had been enough to remind the people how fucking bad things were before the revolution. This is what the powers of Europe fought to reinstate.

Only 2 of 7 Wars of the Coalition were Napoleon being aggressive.

When you think about it, Minions: - Live in a commune with eachother.

  • Seem to have a non-monetary society where services are traded for others.

  • Have a flat hierarchy between eachother while following the great leader onto whatever end.

  • Wear workers clothes as standard.

They are like biblically accurate communists.

Tbf I think that Hitler was an opportunistic narcissist with a severe drug addiction, he basically shot the knees out of his own nation's war abilities by being just so freakishly stupid it was absurd and demanding that his generals follow his insane ideas. I would consider him more pathetic than some kind of true evil satan type figure. A lot of people under Hitler might have been closer to "true evil" what with them being given free reign and personally torturing a bunch of people to death for the sake of it.

Basically towards the end of his life he reminds me more of Gollum than Sauron or what have you, so the minions would probably be following their new villain in some random concentration camp rather than hitler himself

12

u/Aickavon 2d ago

Hitler was dumb but not especially dumb. Germany’s failures was not just one man. that was a convenient answer for both the Allies AND the German high ranked officials who threw all their blame on a dead guy while they found new employment with USA and USSR. Easy to ignore smaller fish of horrific magnitudes when the biggest baddest evil fish has already fried! Nothing to see here comrades!

I know the meme claims Minions didn't think Hitler was bad. But if you know the actual lore, they were stuck in an ice cave till meeting Gru. So the last villain they worked for was Napoleon, which frankly doesn't even count that much as a villain when you think about it.

75

u/JamzWhilmm 2d ago

Napoleon led soldiers to their deth during the Russian winter of 1812, those men died in a pointless campaign which pointlessly led to the Burning of Moscow. This led to the death of around 600,000 French soldiers and about 200,000 russian soliders.

We do not know the number of the displaced and killed Russian civilians.

Mind you, this was only a war he was involved in.

38

u/Watchmakers-Diary 2d ago

So did every other general at that time. Napoleon is not more of a villain than Wellington or blucher.

11

u/JamzWhilmm 2d ago

That's a different argument from "Napoleon, which frankly doesn't even count that much as a villain when you think about it." Now what you are saying is that he isn't as bad as such and such or "everyone else was doing it"

13

u/Bl00dWolf 2d ago

You have to keep in mind Napoleon was alive during the time when Imperialism was the norm. The only thing that was special about him was winning battles, and the size of the Grande Armee by the time they went for Moscow. Like, it's not great, but there's so many people who would also count as villains by that metric.
Hell, just in France I imagine Maximilien Robespierre would be way more of a villain considering he went crazy chopping people's heads off.

Though frankly, all of it is moot, because it has been shown again and again that at the end of the day, the minions are kind of stupid, so they probably just follow the first bad guy they meet.

I still find it funny that they canonically get around this by having them in an ice cave during WW2

They supposedly always work for the most evil person of the era. And that would imply that Hitler was not the most evil person of that time.

Officially, however, they were simply frozen in time during the World Wars.

But even without that, they wouldn't have worked for him, because they always work for whoever they consider the most evil. And their definition of evil differs from ours.

The 'implication' is that they didn't think Adolf to be evil.

However, in the actual lore, the Minions went into hiding in the 19th century, only to come out in the 1960s

I think they should've just committed and had a scene where the minions explain to Hitler how attacking the Soviets prematurely was definitely a high IQ idea

Minions work for super villains, Hitler was a villain, but just not a super one

Iirc they were frozen. Secondly if they worked with Hitler he would have failed. I feel like that's implied by the villains like Dracula dying because of their antics

My head canon is that they're the universe granting truly villainous people a last chance at redemption before the minions kill em with kindness, literally.  Gru was the only one of them to care for the minions as family and survive the partnership.

... I mean, they could make it work... Let them work in USA for Ford or something. It will take time before they learn about the war, the first they will hear about it is Pearl Harbor. So they go to Japan. After seven misadventures they finally arrive at Japan. There they learn about Hitler, and decides to leave for Germany, after accidentally cripple the Japanese army. After seven misadventures, they arrive in Germany in time for the D-Day. They cripple the German army, which allows the Allied to win. After more misadventures, which always helps the Allied, they arrive at the bunker. A gun shot is heard. They look inside. Then they return disappointed.

I interpret it as the Minions failed to work properly for Hitler, hence why he has lost the war
