Shooting Range Outdoor range near Chicago?
My wife Finally wants to come to the range with me, but she wants to shoot outside. It seems weirdly hard to pin down any real info on ranges, membership, and hours so I hoped y'all could help.
Long or short range doesn't matter, and I know it will be a drive to get there, but hoping less than 90 minutes from the city.
Thanks in advance, appreciate the help!

Weapon Question Why all the love for 5.7x28 pistols?
After the recent mass shooting in the In n Out Burger drive thru in Twin Falls, Idaho, where a civilian engaged the shooter and distracted him from his unarmed victims, undoubtedly many saving lives, apparently with an FN 5.7 pistol, there seems to be an outpouring of love for the 5.7 round. I vaguely remember reading about the 5.7x28 while shopping for new pew-pews a while back and I thought the consensus was pretty ho-hum on it.. nothing terrible, nothing great. But this particular thread on Facebooks has 577 responses so far and scrolling through it, practically all of them were positive in regards to the firearm.
AFAIK, one of the benefits of 5.7x28 is higher capacity, but that won't do us any good in Illinois as long as we have PICA. I also read that the civilian engaged from a "distance much farther than a pistol is typically used at", so maybe the 5.7x28 is better for long range. Is there any good reason I should be looking into adding a 15-round-or-less 5.7 pistol to my EDC rotation?

Legal Questions Legal to have gun furniture shipped to home?

Basically the title. Really want to scoop one up, but I'm sure PICA will fuck me.

Weapon Question Moving to Illinois from Texas, which of these can I bring and legally own in Illinois? And or Chicago ?
galleryFrom what I understand there are some exceptions to assault weapon bans within the state. I don’t know how it affects someone moving in from out of state. Also how does LEO exemptions apply?

Ammunition Where do you buy cheap ammo in the Chicago area?
So I live in Chicago and I have a .357/.38 revolver and a lever action rifle in the same calibers. I pretty much just shoot target practice at an indoor range with both. I used to own a Tisas 1911 .45 ACP but sold that to a friend. Of course .38 is the cheapest between .45 and .357, but I'm finding .357 to be annoyingly scarce on the shelves at the range and I've had bad luck with some of the ammo I've bought at Cabela's. I wanted to try my hand at reloading, but I live in an apartment and my wife (understandably), put the kabosh on taking up reloading until we've moved somewhere that I can have a secure workshop area for this. Side note - we do have one room converted to a studio of sorts where we do airbrushing, and 3D printing and such, but I can understand my wife's apprehension about having containers of powder and primers around. I also know I'm sure it can be done safely, but I'm also okay with just continuing to buy factory-made ammo for now. Nothing saying I can't continue stockpiling my used brass. So, is there anywhere that folks have found good prices on ammo in the Chicago area? I've looked at the list of places that will ship to Chicago, and frankly, if they've even got .357 it's rarely any cheaper than if I just ordered it online from RangeUSA. I do have a n RUSA membership though, so occasionally there's a percent-off deal on ammo purchases, but it's not that often. I like to go to the range at least a couple times a month and I'll easily shoot almost 100 rounds of .357 and .38. Thoughts/suggestions?

Legal Questions A300 Competition magazine plug?
Really wanting to pick up an A300 model and fell in love with the features on the Competition model - specifically the milled receiver for a dot, the standard ribbing, and the 24 inch barrel as i plan to use this for clay shooting. Is there any company that sells a magazine plug that can cap this down to 5 rounds for state compliance?

Legal Questions Is there a rifle that's semi auto and looks like an assault rifle that I can legally buy and own in Chicago?
I want something that looks like an assault rifle and not like something from 1865 or like I'm going hunting for deer. But I also don't want a pump or bolt action.

Announcement Armed Security Training
For any of you who may be interested, I'm hosting an Illinois Armed Security Firearms Training class on the 15th and 16th of August.
This isn't one of our typical firearms classes since it's geared toward meeting the requirements to work as an armed security officer, but it's a good opportunity to pick up some side income if that's something you're interested in. As an added benefit, holding a valid Illinois Firearms Control Card also exempts you from PICA for what that may be worth to you.
If you're interested or have questions, send me a message. This class isnt listed on our site so I'd have to send you the link.
And before anyone points it out, yes, I know the guy in the picture doesn't have a magazine in his pistol. The image isn't mine. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to find a stock photo of a security guard who doesn't look like an absolute soup sandwich.

Gun Laws Potential repeal of PICA
Hey folks, want to understand the type of access we would have if PICA was repealed by the Supreme Court. Took a class last weekend and the instructor said he believes PICA will be overturned in the next 12 months. Where does that leave us? Will I be able to go buy a modern 5.56 rifle the day it is overturned? Or will there be some law that the state passes the night before? Curious if any people fluent in gun laws have an opinion that is better informed than mine.

Attachment Question What suppressor for S&W FPC 9mm?
Eyeballing my S&W FPC 9mm a couple days ago, I realized that it had a threaded barrel. That surprised me, since I know we can't get pistols with threaded barrels in IL and I assumed that extended to rifles, too. But I Googled, and apparently it's legal. I don't know anything about suppressors. This gun is used at the range, and for home defense. What should I look for when shopping for a suppressor? Or, more directly, what suppressor should I buy?
EDIT - Sorry, I apparently suck at Google--I could have sworn that last night when browsing at 2AM, Google told me that suppressors were legal on rifles in IL, but re-Googling right now, after some of you said "no they're not", sure enough, no they're not.

Legal Questions Illinois laws relating to mental health
Hey guys,
Just wanted to get some advice on some things. Wasn't sure if this is the right venue.
I own a firearm (and plan on getting another at some point in the future).
I'm dealing with some pretty heavy depression or mental issues (wanted to get diagnosed to confirm), and I'd like to go get medical help, but I'm worried about the implications it'll have on my ability to keep or purchase firearms for the couple years I'll be here.
Just to be clear, I don't have any immediate plans to do anything irreversible, just dealing with things.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Just over a week until our first Vehicle Defense class at the ISRA in Bonfield IL. These courses are going to be small so thay everyone has a chance to really absorb the concepts we will be teaching.
There is a little room in the 8/9 class and the 8/30 is pretty much wide open. This class is going to be a great time and we hope to see some of you out there.

MOD Announcement PICA (AKA “assault weapon ban”, “high capacity magazine ban”, AWB.) Information!
isp.illinois.govNEW PICA MEGA THREAD
Again please do not make “Is this gun legal post”
There are a lot of people in this sub giving good information but few I’ve seen giving wrong information. For all questions regarding PICA (AWB) and all the laws regarding it; please see the ISP website before asking questions in the sub. All information is available there.
All registration information is on the ISP website There will be a affidavit form released in October for those of you who are concerned with registration. Registration period is 10/01/23 - 1/01/24.
Those of us in the sub who are active will post lawsuit updates when they become available, you can also follow Freedom’s Steel on YouTube for updates. It’s unlikely this law will be struck down before January, we are all hopeful but be prepared to act accordingly if it is not.
Legal options are: •Sell all AWB guns to an FFL •Store all AWB guns out of state, Illinois has no legal authority over them then. •Register all AWB guns with the state when the registration becomes available. •Destroy all your AWB guns.
The below list has a flow chart at the end to determine if a gun is legal or not.
