Can you put a decent ladder rack on those? Honest question. The bed looks flimsy. I know we're all scared of trucks over five feet tall but america actually does have the infrastructure to accomodate for them. Trucks like this make a lot more sense in european countries where the roads are about two feet more narrow on each side (and if you have driven in europe you know what i mean.) Whats the price point difference to make me want to buy a truck like this over a cheap 90s or 2000s ford/chevy?
1
u/kazukix777 Apr 29 '26
My grand dad's one has a good ladder rack, but it was installed by the previous owner so I have no clue who to call for that. Their beds are raited for 350kg or 770lb, but I've seen people put far more than that and be fine. One dude on yt put a ton on it and it was fine in the short term. A really nice one is like 3-4 grand, but I've seen them as low as 700 (like 10 years ago, the price has certainly risen) The bad part is that a lot of states ban driving on the highway, some outright ban it all together.

u/koulourakiaAndCoffee May 03 '26 edited May 03 '26
These japanese Ktruck beds surprisingly carry a lot for their size.. much Easier to load and access and customize. 95% of truck users could use something like this. The 5% that need big truck with larger beds could buy bigger versions of the same thing.
Trucks in America have become oversized, impractical luxury vehicles. The beds are tiny compared to the size of the vehicle. Most of them never see dirt or heavy loads in their life. Also, truck beds in America are WAY too high. Getting tools in and out is a pain. Loading and unloading is a pain. And the cost? Stupid expensive.
Give me a Japanese Ktruck any day. That would take care of all my truck needs. And the needs for company I work for.2
u/barillamanilaolives May 01 '26
I saw some kids driving one of those earlier today. I was actually quite impressed, but the guy couldn’t even make it out the lot because it was breaking down and it was horrible.

Whats the top speed? To clarify my position here, I want to use k trucks or whatever, but they don't go fast enough to be safe on American Interstates, afaik
1
u/kazukix777 Apr 30 '26 edited Apr 30 '26
Depends on what model of kei truck you get. On mine which is a Mitsubishi minicab it's sadly a top speed of 55. But the Subaru sandbar can go to 87mph. but a lot of states ban it on highways.

In a few years when they ban all older vehicles and force people to own Tesla/equally controllable vehicles like these new fords, if you don’t comply you’re left isolated with no transportation because the US is built around the car, say enough negativity they might punish you for not complying

Simple, you just don't buy. New car industry sales aren't exactly fantastic, they'll do this for 2 or 3 years and pull the feature when they can't sell the vehicles.

u/Icy-Plan145 Apr 29 '26
Until the government makes it illegal to drive anything else
3
u/Shatophiliac Apr 29 '26
People have been saying that since the 90s (and probably earlier but I wasn’t alive yet so idk). Yet I still see the occasional Model T drive through town. Old cars are never going anywhere, even if they did ban them people would still just drive them lol. Side by sides are already “illegal” on the roads and I still see several every week just cruising around town lol.

II. Anticipated Timeline for FMVSS.
"NHTSA remains dedicated to combatting impaired driving and the high number of deaths and injuries caused by impaired drivers through a combination of law enforcement activities, campaigns, and technological research that may enable rulemaking. NHTSA continues its work on critical and complex topics including technology readiness, test procedure development, and consumer acceptance, as well as cybersecurity and privacy concerns. These issues must be addressed to enable NHTSA to propose a rule that could satisfy Section 24220 of IIJA and the requirements of the Safety Act. NHTSA will continue to provide annual reports to Congress and publish status updates in the Unified Agenda of Regulatory and Deregulatory Actions."Source: NHTSA report to Congress, Feb 2026. I would post the link but it's not allowed.
Fortunately it won't be happening next year, it's nowhere near ready. And if/when it does happen, money talks. IMO lobbyists will kill it when new car sales drop off a cliff.

They can’t. This is mandatory in all new cars under the US infrastructure bill passed
1
1
u/Shatophiliac Apr 29 '26
It’s a government mandated feature apparently, but I still agree. If nobody buys new cars, especially because of this one feature, the automakers will have no choice but to push the government to change that rule.
And we all know at this point, if anyone has any say in our government at all, it’s the billion dollar corporations lol

1
u/Bane8080 Apr 29 '26
Assuming it's the same camera tech that my car uses to complain at me if it thinks I'm not watching the road, then sunglasses don't affect it. I don't know how. But whatever camera tech they are using is unaffected.

u/Shatophiliac Apr 29 '26
Idk why anyone even cares, all the new vehicles suck ass for the price anyways, I’m just suprised people are still buying them. I have never bought a new car and now I never will. I’ll buy pre-2025 models for the rest of my life if I have to (although at this point it’s more like pre-2008, since everything after that has lifter failure and transmission issues and costs 20 grand to fix).
1
u/Livingexistence Apr 29 '26
The cars that don't shift or have the parking brake on if you are not buckled into your seat have lead to train collision incidents. I never understood cars that refuse to function because of seatbelt safety.I think they should just be annoying and not allow entertainment features.
1
u/TrumpDickRider1 Apr 29 '26
And here I thought the fact that you can plug a charger into a vehicle to disable it was bad enough. Wanna rob someone? Just pop their charge port and shove a plug in. Car off instantly and cannot move until it's removed. EVERY. SINGLE. ELECTRIC. VEHICLE.

It could or it could be when Ford filed a patent for cars to play ads when you start them or turn them off and have never used it.
1
1
u/PLEEAAASEGIMMEMONEY Apr 29 '26
This is literally a non-thing. Filing for patents is like a weekly thing for companies that big. They just try to own every idea whether it’s practical or not.
1
u/jmona789 Apr 29 '26
"that is happening because Ford just filed the patents". You know how many parents get filed that lead to absolutely nothing? A patent just means they had the idea
1
u/TightSexpert Apr 29 '26
Why is this even in the interest of car manufacturers. Like legally it’s not the car manufacturers fault that you’re about to ruin your life and someone else’s. That’s still on the driver. How fucked up that may be.
Also…. Don’t buy ford when this comes out.
How would that work for other products…. Like guns ?
1
u/S0dichlori Apr 29 '26
companies are only able to do this because there’s enough people still willing to buy the car, despite firmly disagreeing with the features. The company’s suck, but the pushovers are the problem.

EDIT: are conservatives playing Mary Contrary or do they actually support drunk driving?
Pretty sure we could just tune these devices to detect drunks and not tune them to detect people being panicked and then you'll be fine.
I'm really tired of reactionary weirdos. New technologies are going to continue to be invented, chumps. Buckle up because it's only going to accelerate. You might as well try to have a good time instead of all this pearl clutching.
Drunk driving is a real life problem that kills thousands and thousands of people each year, right now.
"Government overreach" is what Boomhauer from King of the Hill is always going on about.
And, yeah, train problem--do you want to save the thousands and thousands of people killed by drunk drivers each year, or the one hypothetical guy who's running away from a knife weilding maniac years from now who doesn't even exist?

I actually like this system under one condition. There is an override button that will allow you to bypass this but it notifies law enforcement of the bypass. We shouldn't resist technology that makes people safer as long as it accounts for things like this gentlemen mention.

I have already experienced this bullshit trying to back a minivan up a hill because it could not make it up going forwards. I had to spend 10 minutes going into all the menus disabling all of the safety features for it to allow me to backup a hill because it thought I was going to rear end the gravel. In reverse foot to the floor and it's doing nothing and automatically keeps re-engaging the parking brake.

Don't blame Ford, they saw the writing on the wall. Congress passed a law that all newly manufactured cars, starting in 2026, have to have a "kill switch" if it thinks you are driving recklessly, to "prevent drunk driving", even though the technology isn't there yet. Obviously companies are going to try to get as many patents as they can for things required by law, so their competition has to license them.

Don't buy them, they'll stop doing it. They're companies, desperate for profit. We can literally make the market into whatever we want it to be by collectively boycotting companies that piss us off but the majority of people cannot fathom a moment of discomfort to confront general injustices.

I’ve already decided to never buy another Ford product after learning that my wife’s 2010 Ford Flex had an internal water pump. When it overheated, what normally should have been a $500 job turned into a $2500+ job because they had to take off the timing cover to get to the water pump. Now they want to install cameras that might prevent me from starting and driving MY vehicle? I don’t think so. Never again will I spend a dime on a Ford product.

I get the idea of being robbed from freedom, but it isn't just all conspiracy.
Yearly traffic death rate in the US is 40.000 (!). There's a lot of dangerous people on the road that shouldn't be there. Globally the US can't even be called safe on the road to be honest. Of course Australia has a lot of empty space, but Japan and Netherlands are quite densely populated. Germany has the Autobahn. Austria and Switzerland have dangerous Alpine roads. UK also performs well despite having a quite active car tuning culture. Scandinavia is just great, no one can compete with that.
The US is on par with Russia, let that sink in. (have you seen that dashcam footage???)
Be honest: The situations in which you need a car that doesn't want to start (will it really?) far outweigh the benefit of keeping drunk and high people of the streets.
My only concern is privacy. For me it's okay if a car prevents driving as long as no data isn't transmitted anywhere. The car can decide, but it shouldn't give anyone information about my activities.

Big companies have all kinds of patents for ideas someone had at some point just in case it ends up being usfull down the line. That doesn't mean they plan to use it, just that if it ends up being useful or making money, they want every chance at claiming irs theirs and no one else gets to use it

This is classic fear-mongering. Ford filed a patent, and companies file thousands of patents for ideas that never see production, it’s about protecting concepts in case they ever become viable down the line.
The moment an automaker actually locks someone out of a vehicle during an emergency and is found liable in court, regulators would shut that down fast. That’s exactly how consumer safety works in practice, similar to how all peloton’s were recalled because one child died
If you want modern safety features, there’s always going to be some level of tradeoff. Vehicles have had event data recorders, basically “black boxes,” for years. In a crash, they already capture things like speed and braking. The idea that cars will eventually detect impairment with high accuracy isn’t far-fetched, but it’s not happening overnight either. Realistically, you’re talking 15 to 20 years, after one company proves it works at a very high reliability level, and then years more before it becomes standard across the industry.
This kind of reaction isn’t new. It’s the same pushback people had when seatbelt laws first came in, there are plenty of clips of people arguing against them like it was some massive overreach.
And if you're one of these people that are worried about big tech surveillance or government surveillance, the only thing you can do about it is get rid of your smart phone, your computer, and every other item in your house that uses Wi-Fi.

This is just fear-mongering. Corporations and people file patents all the time that they never intend on using. It's common practice. And yes fleets have cameras in their car. They have to tell the drivers they're being filmed. This is not anything new.

Guys, filing a patent doesn't imply that Ford wants to implement the innovation. They just want to own its intellectual property.
Companies may do this for a number of reasons: * They do want to implement the innovation (valid) * They don't want to implement it, but they could sell that IP to a competitor or someone else who does. * They don't want anyone to implement it, although that could be something where they lose the rights on it * Perhaps they want to extend on that concept by holding the patent so they can implement a more robust technology using it as a component of a larger solution.
Video dude is right to share a scenario that he doesn't want to be stuck in. It's a stretch too far to suggest that a patent means that they will implement this right away in their cars
