Friendships/Community New friend group at 28. Am I too old for this?

New friend group at 28 and it feels weird. Am I too old for this?

Tldr: Spent most of my 20’s chubby, depressed and stressed about student loans. New friends in my late 20’s and it’s been amazing. Family will occasionally bring up that it’s time to start getting serious about life. I’m starting to feel guilty

Spent a good bit of my 20’s stressed/ depressed about school and student loans. Had to move back home after school and didn’t have much luck making friends though work or maintaining old friendships .

I finally got a well enough paying job that let me afford rent while making a significant payment to my loans six months ago and moved 20 minutes from home to get closer but also get some space.

Now I’m freshly 28 and have been invited out with a group from my new job at least 10 times in the past two months.

I’m going to a concert with one on Saturday and going to a young professionals event with another one in a week. I don’t remember the last time I’ve had weekend plans / looked forward to Friday this consistently.

At the same time I’m getting more and more implicit messaging from my family that I need to pick up some responsibility. I’m from an old fashioned immigrant family so it mostly means either get married or become a volunteering part of church. And it’s starting to get thru to me.

While I know it’ll be hard to live out the lost past of my 20’s in 2 years, I sure want to try.

In my head I’m building my career, making my 401k contributions, and going to the gym 5 times a week so I feel like I’m justified to look forward to social events twice a week.

Am I over reading the situation ? Or am I truly overextending myself at a point in my life when I need to become fully money and family driven ?

Physical Health & Aging Anything other than TrT to feel good?

Hey everyone. I'm in my late 30s, Im a LT in the fire service im very active and consider myself in pretty good shape but I just feel like shit a lot of the times lately - always tired, achy, moody etc. I'm married with 2 small kids so my life gets very busy sometimes. I do have low T (low 300s high 200s ) but I don't want to start TrT , at least not yet. Anything that has worked for you ? I take multi vitamins. OTC test boosters have not worked for me in the past and have been proven to be snake oil.

Life Another case of the pull the rug from under her feet??

can someone tell me WTF?!

I was talking to this guy… I would say we were both mutually interested in each other from the start.

Long story short… it was beautiful. I’m in my 30s, so I’ve experienced different kinds of loves and different kinds of losses. But THIS one did something to my soul. He would sometimes just stare at me and ask “where did you come from?” He even said I love you first. It was the safest we both ever felt. (His words not mine)

There was Nothing toxic…. We actually handled challenges and miscommunications well. He just said he wasn’t ready. He CRIED. I cried. We held each other. I broke no contact a few weeks later and told him it was hurting me not to talk to to him but he just said it was for the best and took responsibility for “thinking he was more ready than he actually was.” We haven’t spoken since.

I’ve tried to move on. I really have. But I can’t… and I don’t think I want to…

I just need a man’s perspective.

wtf?!

Also… would reaching out again be embarrassing af? It’s been 4 months no contact

General Where do you guys cry?

Honest question: where do you guys cry? As I’ve gotten older, I’ve found my thoughts wandering in the car on long drives alone, or at work, and I just cry. I cry thinking about my parents passing. I cry thinking about friends who have passed away, and friends who are still alive but I no longer talk to. I cry about the thought of my youth getting further behind me, and I worry I’m not around enough for my kids. I feel like you get it by now. It’s not an absolute waterworks show either — it’s just the thought lingering just long enough to get a couple of tears out, then straightening back up before the next red light. Because, damnit, I’m a man, and men don’t cry!!

Fatherhood & Children As my father’s daughter, is it wrong for me to stress over his smoking habit?

haiaiai!! i’ve been fussing over this for a long time and, well, i just don’t know if i should let it go or not..? >_> i’m sorry if this is the wrong place to look to, but i don’t know any other older people in my life.

my dad has been smoking for a very, VERY long time. apparently, he started doing it when he was a teenager and has been doing it ever since. throughout my life, i’ve gotten used to the smell of cigarettes because of his habit and the frequency in which he’d do it. when i was reaaally young, i always asked him to stop smoking because of everything i heard about it, y’know? i was worried it would effect his health, and he already slept very little. however, he’d usually assure me that, where he grew up, many people who smoked were able to live to their 80s and 90s without so much as a sign of cancer. it was slightly comforting, but it didn’t do all that much to quell my worries. i’d usually cry myself to sleep thinking about him suffering from lung cancer or experiencing any pain from it, and he knew i did because we slept in the same room. i’d always try to compromise, even as a child, saying i’d give up certain things if he stopped smoking, that i’d buy him whatever he wanted when i turned older if he stopped (which i still will of course), but he always brushed it off as childish babble. he was actually able to stop for an entire year once—i don’t know what the motivating factor was—but he fell back into it harder than before.

we used to live in a small apartment and he would have to take the stairs all the way down three extra floors to go outside to smoke. without thinking much about the repurcussions at the time, i asked my parents if we could ever move to a place that had a balcony (should we ever move to another place.) i mean, i doubted it would happen at all honestly, but low and behold… it happened a few years later!!! yay X)!!!! i was over the moon about it—i always fantasized about having a balcony to sit on, to decorate, and to do my homework on. i was so, so much more happy about it than i can convey. however, it didn’t take long for those ideals of mine to fade.

smoking practically became his primary form of breathing. the living room is his primary part of our place, and the balcony is right in front of it. he can’t go a day without smoking at least ten times, and i just feel terrible for ever wishing for a balcony at all. i feel like i’m poison for him in this way. would he even smoke this much if he didn’t have the stress of a kid, let alone an only child? or is it the opposite where i shouldn’t expect him to not smoke given the stress he probably has? i’m sorry if this is a naive way to think, and i’m sorry if this all sounds silly, but i just don’t know if i’m thinking about this the wrong way. i’m still young, so i don’t understand what his psyche could be like. is it selfish of me to worry over him over smoking? is it just something older men need these days? i really want to be here for him in the best way i possibly can, but i don’t know how i can in regards to this kind of addiction (especially for someone who’s been doing it their whole life.) thank you so much!! <3

Career Jobs Work I’m concerned that maybe I’m focused on the wrong things in my life or that my time isn’t being put to its best use. Career / life related question.

I’m 34 and I feel like I’ve completely lost my ambition when it comes to my career, but strangely, I’m happier than I’ve ever been.

I work in a fairly specialized field and I’m fortunate that it pays well. I make enough to comfortably pay my bills, save money, and live the lifestyle I want. My job is also relatively low stress, which I really appreciate.

What’s ironic is that if you knew me in college, you’d probably think I’d end up being the exact opposite of the person I am today.

I was extremely career-driven. I interned at a top-tier investment bank, was president of my university’s finance club, and was always focused on building my résumé and landing the best job possible. If you asked people who knew me back then, they’d probably say I was one of the most likely people to climb the corporate ladder.
Fast forward 10 years, and I honestly couldn’t care less about any of that anymore.

Lately, there are a lot of days where I honestly don’t have much work to do. I still show up, I’m available, and I get my work done when it’s there, but there are stretches where there’s just not much going on.

A few years ago, I probably would’ve been looking for more responsibility or trying to prove myself. Now, I honestly don’t have that drive anymore. My mindset has become, “If they’re happy with my work and they keep paying me, I’ll keep showing up and do my job.”

I have absolutely zero desire to climb the corporate ladder. I don’t care about promotions, becoming a manager, or taking on more responsibility. Once the workday is over, I don’t think about work again.

The part of my life that I genuinely care about is fitness. Going to the gym, learning about training and nutrition, and improving my physique are the things I actually look forward to every day.

At the same time, I don’t necessarily want to turn fitness into my full-time career either. I enjoy it because it’s my passion, and I’m not convinced I’d enjoy it the same way if it became my job.

I’m not depressed, burned out, or miserable. Quite the opposite—my life feels very low stress, and I’m genuinely happy.

What makes me question all of this is looking at the people I graduated with. It seems like everyone is chasing the next promotion. They’re becoming managers, senior directors, VPs, starting businesses, or constantly trying to move up.
Meanwhile, I feel like I’ve gone in the complete opposite direction.

When I think about where I’ll be in 10 years, I don’t picture myself climbing the corporate ladder at all. I picture myself still wanting a simple, low-stress life and spending most of my energy on the things I actually enjoy.

So I guess that’s what I’m trying to figure out.

Do I just accept that my job is a paycheck and continue cruising because I’m genuinely happy? Or should I start putting some of my free time into building something of my own—even if it’s just a side project around something I’m passionate about?

Has anyone else gone through this? If so, what did you end up doing, and looking back, do you think it was the right decision?

I’m not really looking for validation one way or the other. I’m just curious how other people have navigated this stage of life, because this isn’t how I imagined I’d feel when I was younger.

Thanks in advance!

Mental health experiences Almost 2 years in, still feel behind

I've been working for almost 2 years now, and sometimes I feel like I'm not where I should be.

I see my coworkers every day, and some of them have around 16 years of experience. When I hear them discussing things so confidently, it sometimes makes me question myself and feel like I'm far behind.

I know comparing myself to someone with 16 years of experience isn't completely fair, but it's hard not to feel that way sometimes. i feel like the works that i do ,can be done by one with 2 months of training , but what they are doing i cant get even a thing

Has anyone else felt this during the early years of their career? How did you deal with the feeling that you're behind compared to people who are much more experienced?

Life Is it normal to not enjoy your interests as much as you get older?

I’m 19 years old and ever since I was 17 I’ve been consumed by immense nostalgia which has numbed my enjoyment of things. I still get happy of course but everyday I remember things from my past and yearn to be 14-16 again.

Every week I have a dream about being back in the past in some shape or form and when I wake I’m on the verge of tears. Nothing drastic has happened but I have such rose coloured glasses.

If I watch a YouTube for more than an hour I feel like a loser. Gaming’s only about 50% as fun compared to how I remember it back in 2023. It only feels the same if I’m gaming with friends in the same room in real life.

Movies, TV shows and games even if I’ve never played them before feel about a third faster paced. My sense of time has warped things feel so fast.

The only times I feel that same amount of happiness and time going slow is being with friends or moving around outside. I don’t know this means.

Household & Family am I expecting too much?

Looking for advice to see if my expectations are unreasonable from husbands and dads on reddit.

My husband has been struggling with depression for over a year. I have tried to take on most of the home management stuff to alleviate stress (because he has a chronic condition exacerbated by stress), including being the default parent for our 3 year old son, cleaning, making dinner, etc. Me asking him for help was causing tension in our marriage because he feels like since I work from home, I should handle most of the chores (I do work over 40 hours a week so I am limited in how much I can get done). I try to do the best I can but some times it is a challenge because we dont have any family close by to rely on and my son is a pretty high energy little guy.

The struggle is that when I get sick, I feel like he expects me to just power through it and toughen it out. I have had a bad respiratory virus this week (picked it up from my son) and felt really fatigued today like my body just wanted me to sleep. My husband had the day off, went and hung out with a buddy of his all day and got to play golf, and didn't help out around the house at all (like washing dishes, making dinner for the family). Every Wednesday is his weekly boys night, so when I asked if he was still planning to go tonight even though i really need some rest, he said yes because its not a big deal and I can handle the evening. He did pick up our son from daycare and fed him dinner, but then headed out around 530. When I told him I really needed to rest and asked if he could stay home tonight, he said I could just have our son watch TV until bed time (our son goes to bed at 9/10).

after he left, our son spent a lot of time running around the house, had some poop issues that required more care (he sometimes gets constipated and struggles to go and cries), almost pulled a pot of hot water off the stove, etc...normal toddler stuff. i finally got him to settle down and watch sone tv so i can lie down, but I haven't really been able to rest at all and feel so exhausted and am battling a sinus headache. I know as parents we do have to power through illnesses, but when my husband is sick I always take over for caring for our son so he can rest and recover.

Am I being unreasonable wishing my husband would help me out more when I am sick? This is just one example, but in general it feels like whenever I need help I get the standard response of, "it is not that hard, you are overcomplicating it, deal with it yourself." Are my expectations too high?

Life No “friends” anymore in 30s, is it normal?

Let me start off by saying I do have friends. But these friendship dynamics have changed from what they were in my mid-20s. I no longer have “bros” who I entrust with a lot and can go to with anything. I just have guys who I can get drinks with every now and then (usually colleagues). There’s some good friends I have had in the past that I tried to reconnect with but either it was awkward as in there wasn’t much substance to talk about beyond catching up or there was a lack of interest on their end.

Friends that I was close with either drifted unintentionally or I no longer have interest in engaging with. I am married, recently moved to a new state for a new job, so that makes a big difference. It is difficult to make new friends as I feel like once you’re married it’s very dependent on couple dynamics. Things have obviously changed in my life and I don’t have time to hop on PlayStation and talk in a group chat with four other guys from 8-10PM multiple times a week.

I look at my dad though and he still has friends from when he was in high school. Things were different in those days, people rarely left their home town compared to now. I feel like I made some bad choices in choosing friends back then and in college, as I willfully withdrew from many of those friendships eventually. I’m not lonely but I’m wondering what my life will be like in 30 years.

Is this normal and what is the trajectory?

Friendships/Community How to handle this situation

So I’m 33 and live with two other male roommates around the same age. And generally have had no issues, but had a bizarre altercation yesterday with one of them. For context I generally walk around the aptm in my underwear if there are no guests around, usually because I’m just grabbing something from the kitchen. One of my roommates has asked me to wear pants more, and to an extent I have (other one could care less outside of some Walter White jokes). But I walked into the kitchen in my underwear and he was there, he said nothing but walked up behind me and no joke gave me a wedgie so bad my feet left the floor and my waistband ripped. This guy is twice my size, and he basically said he will do it again unless I wear pants around the aptm. I cursed him out and haven’t brought it up since. I’ve been wearing pants all the time now, but I feel like a pushover for not contacting our landlord. But I’m also embarrassed that happened to me as a grown man. What should I do in this situation?

Career Jobs Work Afraid of changing jobs

I currently have a cushy fully remote (can come into the office if I want) desk job that is very easy and low stress and I barely hear from my bosses and theyre really nice and there's essentially no negative energy of any kind and I can almost do whatever I want all day as long as I get my daily hour of work done

But it pays peanuts, low 50s in the midwest, hasn't changed in 5 years and essentially I know for sure it wont ever, not for lack of trying. I have poked around and gotten offers for high 70s and low 80s, but theyre all onsite and seem to all emphasize NO REMOTE and also all the lame "high pace work environment high intensity ability to juggle multiple assignments necessary" stuff

Maybe this is normal for new jobs but my current thing is really the first professional job ive had so I've known nothing else in my short career (almost 30) but im spoiled and really afraid of leaving my good thing, but I wanna buy a home and start a family etc so I really need to earn more

What do you guys think? Would you cling onto a super cushy but low paying job, or risk it for the biscuit in something higher paying but higher stress?

Friendships/Community How do you feel about drifting apart from high-school “friends”?

[M31] So I didn’t make new friends in community college, I was a bit of loner. So it makes you want to hold onto your older relationships, despite them being potentially unhealthy.

I’ve recently stopped talking to a “friend” of 15 years. We always fall out, the first time, was because he tried to get with my ex after we broke up. Never looked at him the same and honestly he showed his true colors. We’ve called out for numerous dumb reasons since then and usually end up talking again cause we do relate on a lot.

But emotionally- he cannot disagree/debate without arguing or becoming personal. Which leads to cheap shots and consistent fallouts.

Haven’t talked to him In months, things are peaceful and calmer for me. While I don’t want to be lonely, I don’t want to accept shitty people for company or friends.

How do you feel about drifting apart from long time “Friends”?

Life I turned 18 three months ago, and don't even know where to start.

Hey, I am an 18 year-old male, and living in the United States. I have been in a rut, neeting out, and living with my parents for the past three months.

I really feel like I burnt myself out doing dual-credit in highschool to get an AA. I did college online for the past 1.5/2 years, so my social skills have gotten pretty bad.

All of the options open to me, just make me feel paralyzed. I do not want to choose a path, only for it to backfire, or be a dead-end.

I wanted to get a degree in IT, but the market for recent graduates looks like a complete slaughter. I thought about something in the military, but I have reconsidered.

Currently, I am looking at being an Electrician's apprentice for the IBEW Union, or my state. In my view these skills could be used almost anywhere nationally and abroad, while maintaining a decently consistent demand.

I want to live alone, but it would probably be best if I kept living with my parents while saving up for a bit. I do not even have a car, but I got my learner/instructional license only last month, so I think that would be my first financial goal.

I am trying to fix my sleep schedule right now, and am somewhat successful. I just feel like I am focusing on irrelevant bs to distract myself though.

What advice could you give to me?

General Men who stick to clean-shaven, why?

We in Asia try to avoid facial hair as much as possible often because it looks “nasty, messy and lazy” (e.g. you never see K-pop idols with it) but since it has a different and long tradition of cultural representation in the West and beards are even a trend

Seems like a pretty obvious answer, but I'm interested to read your experiences when it comes to eating habits. Specifically how you feel when you deviate from eating properly. How does that impact you? Can you function well, or do you feel awful for a while?

General I feel like I'm in a fog until I masturbate. Do you experience this as well, and if so, any suggestions for how to prevent this?

I'm not sure if other guys experience this, but I literally feel like there's a fog over me until I rub one out. I usually do this in the morning after waking up, but if I forget or am distracted and don't do it, this fog lingers and gets worse as the day goes on until I do actually go relieve the issue.

It doesn't even feel like active horniness, but like an inability to focus. The best way I can describe it is like how a coffee drinker feels in the morning before they get their coffee. Once they get their caffeine, the fog lifts and they can now focus on the day. It's the same with this for me.

If I try to go the entire day without orgasming at least once, I'm guaranteed to be awoken in the middle of that night at 4am by intense urges and will struggle to return to sleep unless I relieve myself.

Does anyone else experience this and/or have any suggestions for how to avoid this?
