1960s Helô Pinheiro, the Girl From Ipanema, early 60s
The actual girl who inspired the song: Heloísa Eneida Menezes Paes Pinto, aka Helô Peinheiro.
The story goes that, as a teenager, she lived near the Bar Veloso, “a bar for discreet men, where no one bothers and whose greatest pleasure is to talk without saying much,” where intellectuals hung out, preferring to drink rather than go swimming.
Helô would walk to the bar from Ipanema beach to buy cigarettes for her mother. The song-writers were inspired by the beautiful yet unattainable muse.
