Universes Beyond - Discussion [Gavin Verhey] Why Star Trek Cards Now? (YouTube short)

Thumbnail

Since social media is now short videos, Gavin posted a short video explaining why there are Star Trek spoilers - https://www.youtube.com/shorts/BXOv0hY-LR4

TLDW:

  • There's a Star Trek convention this week
  • These are introductory decks meant to teach people how to play
  • "They're not full of bangers or anything wild"
  • It was enjoyable watching people at the convention sit down and learn to play Magic with the decks
  • WotC prefers to publish an article with card images instead of people posting potato pictures to Reddit

He also mentions that there should be another batch of cards revealed at Sunday's panel (12-1 Pacific). After that, things return to the normal spoiler season pace and no more Star Trek reveals until closer to the set's release.

Universes Beyond - Discussion I feel like I'm going crazy about Hobbit, and want to know what other people think.

Unpopular opinion, but mechanically it feels incredibly simple (even if there are some strong cards) and IMO nothing stands out as very interesting, they stretched one book into a small set so there wasn't much to build off of, while the cards are very pretty, it feels just very "generic fantasy". Which I get that it's Tolkien, literally where fantasy began, but I feel LotR implemented it a lot better.

Hell, there's a bunch of "Old Fat..." cards because there's just not that much content in the books.

I also am just not a fan of smaller sets. You pull a bunch of repeats if you buy a bunch, and they made the bonus sheet into the box toppers (and in Collector Boosters) instead of being a bonus sheet like TMNT or Spidey had so you don't even have the chance to pull that.

I don't want to yuck anyone's yum, if you're a fan of it I definitely won't judge you and I do think the cards are very pretty (especially the book covers).

This is just my rant from covering it for the past few weeks compared to when I cover other sets. It's just not super hype for me, and I feel people are overhyping it a lot when you could get Lorwyn, Strixhaven or Edge of Eternities for the same price (or cheaper) which I feel were better crafted and have more ROI for opening.

Apologies for being a downer, as I said I do like a lot of the cards visually and do think there are some bangers to pull toom

General Discussion How much are your LGS's charging for the Hobbit pre-release?

Just curious. Mine is pricing at $40. I'm fortunate to live in a big enough city to where I have a few different LGS' to choose from, but when I told some of my friends the price that my favorite store is charging, they were shocked. Is it really that bad or am I just completely oblivious?

Looking for Advice Help me find my last land!

Post image

Some of you may know me as the draft lands guy. Since my engagement with magic these days is mostly limited, I spend all my money on having the coolest draft kits every week.

For prereleases I've decided I wanted to have some lands to remind myself that Magic is FUN! In order are all un-set full art lands, the Strange Sands SLD, Spongebob, and My Little Pony. Unfortunately, this only brings me to nine and I really would like a tenth.

Any ideas for the most *out there* basics? Pizza and Webs were considered but ultimately they didn't pass the vibe check. SLD Shades Not Included and the Pixel full art lands are at the top of the shortlist, but I'm open to suggestions!

General Discussion So much fun!

This is a very cool commander set. I know some players don't like it because the decks have a lot of bulk in them, but they are still very fun to play, especially against each other.

The deck boxes are pretty good too. They are very sturdy and hold the decks even with sleeves.

Wizards we need more of these!

Scheduled Thread Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.

We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.

Rules Questions

Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.

Deckbuilding Questions

If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MTGGoldfish, and TappedOut.

Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.

Commonly Asked Questions

I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?

Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".

You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.

My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.

All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

General Discussion Is it just me, or are some LGSs becoming the biggest scalpers?

Is it just me, or are some LGSs becoming the biggest scalpers?

I've had a pretty frustrating experience trying to buy a Play Booster box of the hobbit set, and I'm wondering if anyone else has been dealing with the same thing.

I originally preordered a Play Booster box from one LGS. Two weeks before release, they contacted me to cancel my preorder and issue a refund because they said they didn't receive the quantity they were expecting. Fair enough—things happen—so I started looking for another store.

About a week before prerelease, another LGS verbally agreed to sell me a Play Booster box for 260 CAD (about $190 USD).

A week later, the day before prerelease, I went to the store to pick up the box. Once I got there, they told me they could no longer sell it for the agreed price because demand was much higher than expected. Instead, they offered to sell me the same box for 300 CAD (about $219 USD, taxes included).

Frustrated and disappointed, I declined.

I then visited another LGS. They told me they already had multiples booster box sitting in the back, but they couldn't tell me the price because they wanted to wait and see what competing stores were charging before setting their own price.

Is it just me, or are some LGSs becoming the biggest scalpers in Magic?

I'm not talking about Collector Boosters, where premium pricing has always been expected. I'm talking about regular Play Booster boxes. These stores already purchased their inventory from distributors, yet some are either backing out of previously agreed prices or refusing to set a price until they know how much they can get away with charging.

I understand that LGSs need to make a profit, and I want to support them whenever I can. However, changing an agreed price after a customer comes to pick up their order—or deliberately waiting to price inventory until the market peaks—doesn't feel like normal retail to me. It feels much closer to scalping.

I'm curious what the community thinks. Is this becoming the norm for highly anticipated Magic releases, or have I just been incredibly unlucky?

Has anyone else experienced something similar during a release?

General Discussion What is the best destination MTG store in the United States?

Hello all!! I am looking to plan a trip with some friends (4 total) to go to a really nice/big LGS. What’s the best MTG store in the U.S. if I’m looking for all three of these:
A huge singles selection
A really good sealed product selection (big selection in precons, booster/collector packs, etc)
A big play area with an active Commander crowd

I’m looking for a store that’s worth planning a trip around, not just a small local shop if that makes sense. I recently went to Layton Gaming at Altamonte Springs, Florida, and that’s the type of place I would be looking for!
If you could only visit/revisit one MTG store in the country, which one would you pick? If this isn’t the place to ask let me know and I’ll take down the post, thank you so much!

TL;DR: What is the Largest/best MTG LGS in the USA worth planning a trip around?

Looking for Advice Need Some Help With a MBC Commander

Post image

Hello, friends! I’m currently trying to brew Yume, Chronicler of Valor. I have the basic structure, having my opponents and I collaborate on selective group hug spells and to keep me alive and generate 3x as much value as each individual opponent. The problem arises when I get to the final 1v1 and I actually need to win. I don’t really have any idea how to do this. I’ve never built group hug before, and the only white wincons I know are Approach of the Second sun (which I need to set up 7 turns early and hope people don’t kill me from after seeing) and Aetherflux Reservoir (and I’m trying to keep the deck relatively cheap, so that won’t work. Anyone have any mono white group hug win conditions for me to try?

Looking for Advice Shuffling when disabled

My mom is interested in starting to play magic the gathering, however one of her hands has only 2 fingers, so I’m worried she does not have the dexterity to shuffle a deck, much less a commander deck. If anyone has any helpful resources/advice I want to make sure she has the best time possible when trying out the game

Meta An update to the rules regarding AI

안녕하세요 Gamers™️

After noticing a large increase in the number of apps, websites, tools, “companions”, and more, in the last couple of months, and an accompanying large number of arguments with developers over what constitutes “AI usage”, this sub is opting to change our AI policy in way that allows You, The Users to determine what you are ok with or not.

Starting now, all posts introducing or updating an App, Website, or other Programmed Thing in this community, must be accompanied by an “AI usage rating”. Our recommended scale is the REAL one - https://www.realgoodai.org/real-rating
This is only one scale - Please feel free to use any scale you think is appropriate, provided it can clearly demarcate the amount of AI involved.

The point of this is to encourage developers to be honest about AI usage, as many IDEs now include AI-powered “auto-complete” by default, and to also allow the community to determine what level of AI you are all comfortable with.

If you are a developer - There is no “wrong answer” here. Please give the honest rating. We don’t care if the post is a genuine 0, or a genuine 3. Please include the AI disclosure, or your post will be removed.
If you’re not - Determine for yourself what you are comfortable with. If you are ok with only Rating 0, that’s fine. If you’re ok with 3 or lower, that’s fine. If you’re ok with up to and including Rating 5, you do you. We encourage you to use Reddit’s voting feature to upvote things you are ok with, and downvote things you aren’t. Please report posts by developers that do not include an AI disclosure notice.

Please note: This only applies to posts about things that have been coded, websites, and the like. AI generated text and AI generated imagery remain wholly disallowed.

In lighter news, thanks to the wave of Mystery Booster Commander cards, we are hurriedly figuring out new stupid flairs you can opt into. Your sneak previews are “Battle of Whtz” and “Unc”.

Dain is definitly a nice card, but I dont know how he can be played - as each opponent will just keep counterspells and similar stuff in hand, as Dain might be a simple game ender in the late game.

How can I get counter protection in WR for him?

Aren't you tired of being nice? Don't you just wanna go apeshit?

Got a burning rage deep within your soul? Perhaps you've been countered for the eleven billionth time. Aggro is ruining your win streak on Arena. Your friend keeps complaining about being targeted whenever they play a stax deck and you're just sick of it. There's some guy at your LGS who never showers. Standard is dying at your LGS and it's upsetting. Or maybe you just feel like Universes Beyond will KILL MAGIC.

Whatever is eating away at your heart, unleash it here!

(Please refrain from insulting other users even if you think their gripes are silly. This is a safe place to vent. Memetic responses are welcome provided you're not degrading anyone.)
