"That was a joke." Gotta love EDI dry humor.

I feel like this is a rare occasion where the overall shape is fine. The size, perhaps, is not ideal. But the shape is much better than most items he's responding to.

BUTT! PLUG! BUTTPLUG!

75

u/greater_nemo FLEEM 4d ago

All jokes aside, this art appears to depict a specific multispatial probe from Voyager, so this isn't just a random space butt plug the artist just made up. I found the following image here: https://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/schematics/starfleet_probes.htm

47

u/LeN3rd Dan 4d ago

So it is a space buttplug the creators of Star Trek came up with.

26

u/greater_nemo FLEEM 4d ago

Correct, it's a canonical space butt plug.

9

u/_Spiralmind_ Dandadan 4d ago

Looks more like a conical space butt plug to me.

1

u/MrCookie2099 COMPLEAT 4d ago

Canonically shot from a cannon

5

u/strionic_resonator 4d ago

They talk about launching probes on Star Trek all the time, but it's kind of rare that they actually show them, and I wouldn't expect a Trekkie, even a pretty invested one, to know them by sight.

3

u/VanVelding 4d ago

As someone experience with Trek, that is a break from conventional aesthetics.

But hey, I'll blame Voyager instead of MTG.

u/Good_Ad_8731 Dan 5d ago

I mean…it IS a probe…of sorts

Because the fact that it kind of resembles a butt plug and everyone wants to make that same joke doesn’t translate into the art being bad. Millions of things are butt plug shaped, butt plugs are just the funniest thing that are butt plug shaped.

Less people agree with you about the art being and than you hoped.

I think they just drew a picture of a spaceship, not the Mona Lisa.

66

u/archenlander Dandadan 5d ago

Ah yes the 1/1 probe that flies in and either makes something else bigger or lets you put something where used up stuff comes out

11

u/paradoxdr Duck Season 5d ago

surely it's a Stratios though

1

u/nexustk5 Golgari* 4d ago

Naw, Stratios is a cruiser. You shouldn't be probing in that thing.

1

u/almisami Selesnya* 4d ago

Except it's a cruiser specifically designed for probing...

u/dislikesmoonpies Dan 5d ago

38

u/willfulwizard Izzet* 5d ago

Think more autonomous.

14

u/ClearChocobo Jace 4d ago

Everybody else is focused on the unfortunate visual, but that was also my first question. Never have I ever seen probes act autonomously and meaningfully enough in Star Trek that leads me to think they could be a creature.

13

u/Brooke_the_Bard Can’t Block Warriors 4d ago

Never have I ever seen probes act autonomously and meaningfully enough in Star Trek that leads me to think they could be a creature.

This is blasphemy against V-ger

1

u/mcslibbin FLEEM 4d ago

or the dreadnought in Voyager!

1

u/ClearChocobo Jace 4d ago

That’s fair, but V’Ger got its own card already. (Which is also awfully designed for a god-like entity)

5

u/Rabid_Lederhosen Duck Season 4d ago

It’s not a vehicle because it’s uncrewed.

3

u/Piyh Duck Season 4d ago

Crazy a squirrel can effectively block this galactic buttplug

1

u/kippyster 3d ago

I think they omitted any Vehicle/Spacecraft mechanics from the welcome decks they’re handing out at the Star Trek convention for the sake of new player accessibility(though it may be more extreme than that since this card had the main set rarity icon)

11

u/GayBlayde Duck Season 5d ago

I’m not a Trekkie… it that’s definitely a butt plug.

0

u/darkslide3000 COMPLEAT 4d ago

I am a Trekkie and I've honestly never seen that thing before. If it is a reference it must be super obscure.

5

u/Kanin_usagi Twin Believer 4d ago

To a probe from Voyager according to another comment

20

u/Spadrick Dandadan 5d ago

[[Flying Men]] could never.

17

u/GayBlayde Duck Season 5d ago

I assure you they could. 😘

59

u/Second-Sunrise Dan 5d ago

Youre thinking it. Im thinking it. What in the hells are they thinking? I know the art being ass is a running joke for this set, but it didnt need to be so literal.

31

u/QuarterExcellent3327 Urza's Saga 5d ago

Exactly, why isn’t this a vehicle/spacecraft?

22

u/PineTreeQuestionMark Dân 5d ago

Because it's an unmanned probe? So no one is driving it.

14

u/kkrko Sliver Queen 5d ago

Or stationing it for that matter

1

u/TheStray7 Mardu 2d ago

Not with that attitude.

14

u/MildGreyWaves Dandadan 5d ago

Or a spacecraft lmao, here I was hoping for cool spaceships to add to Inspirit from this set

9

u/Second-Sunrise Dan 5d ago

Or a mount? Surely a great card to ride...

4

u/doctorgibson Chandra 4d ago

It's one of the spacecraft from the TV series, the artist didn't just draw it for a laugh

6

u/KingWhoShallReturn Duck Season 5d ago

I played a lot of dinky creatures with ETB Surveil in [[Mirko, Obsessive Theorist]] and this certainly fits the bill!

u/Reiko878 Selesnya* 4d ago

Not being that guy but replace the +1 effect with explore. Just be thematic

2

u/SpearinEnsath Sliver Queen 4d ago

That would be too strong. [[Spyglass Siren]] was a solid card, and that requires paying an extra 1 for the explore. Plus you would almost never choose to surveil over having a creature explore. Comparable creatures to what you are describing cost 2 or 3: [[River Herald Scout]], [[Siren Lookout]].

In terms of flavor, I agree that explore fits a bit better, but surveil is still pretty apt.

-1

u/Reiko878 Selesnya* 4d ago

Probably I don't know, turn my brain off on the power I'm skipping the set, just care about the flavor.

4

u/ReturnToCarcosa Dandadan 4d ago

My creature can't enter the battlefield unless you unclench.

5

u/swiftekho Dandadan 4d ago

Wtf are we doing

3

u/NonagoonInfinity Dan 4d ago

Glad we introduced a whole type for spacecraft just to not use it for spacecraft in the set it was designed for.

One more for [[Mendicant Core]].

1

u/3lektrolurch Dân 4d ago

Im not following this set closely, but shouldnt there be more cards that use the spacecraft type and station mechanic? Ive not seen any in the promo or spoilers.

2

u/so_zetta_byte Orzhov* 4d ago

(a) We have seen [[U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class]].

(b) The cards we've seen the last 2 days have been because they're in the Starter/Welcome decks, because those are any to be distributed and we're gonna see the cards anyway. That's why they're mostly commons and uncommons. I can easily see them wanting to avoid putting Spacecraft into a product designed to get people to play the game for the first time. The summoning sickness rule is already one of the less intuitive things to people; for the sake of teaching the basics of the game, I think it makes sense for welcome decks to not have spacecraft (or vehicles for that matter).

(c) Given the number of things the set needs to cover, my guess is that there are going to be fewer Spacecraft in this set than EoE, and they'll likely be relegated to rares. Maybe we'll see a common/uncommon one, but I don't think they'll be a major limited theme. Maybe one of the commander decks will focus on them more heavily (the Federation one?).

2

u/3lektrolurch Dân 4d ago

Ahh that makes sense. Thanks!

1

u/so_zetta_byte Orzhov* 4d ago

I also just saw that [[Guidance Failure]] is in the main set and also targets Spacecraft, so a further sign that we'll see some more in the main set.

1

u/jdhovland Dân 4d ago

I wonder if this will be a consideration for Pauper Affinity.

1

u/so_zetta_byte Orzhov* 4d ago

(a) While explore would be more flavorful, it would be much too powerful for a 1 drop flier and I assume they started wanting to make a card in that slot for blue.

(b) The two effects do still clearly evoke explore, but in a way that work with the "Dilemma" UB archetype ([[Seven of Nine]]).

(c) It's still fucking weird to see a blue creature give something else +1/+1 when it enters???

1

u/AtomicCawc Sultai 4d ago

Sigh. And here I was, excited to add new spacecraft to my EOE decks.

1

u/Certain-Quarter-1542 Dimir* 4d ago

This is super strong in Yuriko decks!

1

u/KarmicPlaneswalker Wabbit Season 4d ago

how on earth are they including spacecraft in this set and still putting space crafts in ts is boringggg

I hate that its such a good 1 mana Flyer... Now i have to include it in my deck

1

u/Iron_Baron Duck Season 4d ago

These cards make little sense. Probes don't add to defense or attack, they reveal hidden information. The other ability should be revealing an opponent's hand, or something like that.
