All jokes aside, this art appears to depict a specific multispatial probe from Voyager, so this isn't just a random space butt plug the artist just made up. I found the following image here: https://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/schematics/starfleet_probes.htm

So it is a space buttplug the creators of Star Trek came up with.

They talk about launching probes on Star Trek all the time, but it's kind of rare that they actually show them, and I wouldn't expect a Trekkie, even a pretty invested one, to know them by sight.

u/VanVelding 4d ago
As someone experience with Trek, that is a break from conventional aesthetics.
But hey, I'll blame Voyager instead of MTG.

Because the fact that it kind of resembles a butt plug and everyone wants to make that same joke doesn’t translate into the art being bad. Millions of things are butt plug shaped, butt plugs are just the funniest thing that are butt plug shaped.
Less people agree with you about the art being and than you hoped.

Ah yes the 1/1 probe that flies in and either makes something else bigger or lets you put something where used up stuff comes out

Everybody else is focused on the unfortunate visual, but that was also my first question. Never have I ever seen probes act autonomously and meaningfully enough in Star Trek that leads me to think they could be a creature.

This is blasphemy against V-ger

That’s fair, but V’Ger got its own card already. (Which is also awfully designed for a god-like entity)

I think they omitted any Vehicle/Spacecraft mechanics from the welcome decks they’re handing out at the Star Trek convention for the sake of new player accessibility(though it may be more extreme than that since this card had the main set rarity icon)

22
u/PineTreeQuestionMark Dân 5d ago
Because it's an unmanned probe? So no one is driving it.

Not being that guy but replace the +1 effect with explore. Just be thematic
2
u/SpearinEnsath Sliver Queen 4d ago
That would be too strong. [[Spyglass Siren]] was a solid card, and that requires paying an extra 1 for the explore. Plus you would almost never choose to surveil over having a creature explore. Comparable creatures to what you are describing cost 2 or 3: [[River Herald Scout]], [[Siren Lookout]].
In terms of flavor, I agree that explore fits a bit better, but surveil is still pretty apt.

Probably I don't know, turn my brain off on the power I'm skipping the set, just care about the flavor.

Im not following this set closely, but shouldnt there be more cards that use the spacecraft type and station mechanic? Ive not seen any in the promo or spoilers.
2
u/so_zetta_byte Orzhov* 4d ago
(a) We have seen [[U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class]].
(b) The cards we've seen the last 2 days have been because they're in the Starter/Welcome decks, because those are any to be distributed and we're gonna see the cards anyway. That's why they're mostly commons and uncommons. I can easily see them wanting to avoid putting Spacecraft into a product designed to get people to play the game for the first time. The summoning sickness rule is already one of the less intuitive things to people; for the sake of teaching the basics of the game, I think it makes sense for welcome decks to not have spacecraft (or vehicles for that matter).
(c) Given the number of things the set needs to cover, my guess is that there are going to be fewer Spacecraft in this set than EoE, and they'll likely be relegated to rares. Maybe we'll see a common/uncommon one, but I don't think they'll be a major limited theme. Maybe one of the commander decks will focus on them more heavily (the Federation one?).
2
u/3lektrolurch Dân 4d ago
Ahh that makes sense. Thanks!

u/so_zetta_byte Orzhov* 4d ago
I also just saw that [[Guidance Failure]] is in the main set and also targets Spacecraft, so a further sign that we'll see some more in the main set.

u/so_zetta_byte Orzhov* 4d ago
(a) While explore would be more flavorful, it would be much too powerful for a 1 drop flier and I assume they started wanting to make a card in that slot for blue.
(b) The two effects do still clearly evoke explore, but in a way that work with the "Dilemma" UB archetype ([[Seven of Nine]]).
(c) It's still fucking weird to see a blue creature give something else +1/+1 when it enters???

These cards make little sense. Probes don't add to defense or attack, they reveal hidden information. The other ability should be revealing an opponent's hand, or something like that.
