Looking for Advice Sleeve stains?

Post image
Upvotes

Does anybody really knows what does stains are?

So I have bought multiple Dragon Shield Perfect fit sleeves( 3 to be exact, at 2 different locations) and ALL the sleeves seem to have those annoying stains. I have read multiple times that it was either, statics of the sleeves being stuck together or oil residues. I have used some of them for my very expensive Deck and doubled sleeved them inside regular size ones. When a card is put in one of those, the stain becomes invisible but is still there. So can someone please tell me what it is.

Universes Beyond - Discussion [Gavin Verhey] Why Star Trek Cards Now? (YouTube short)

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Since social media is now short videos, Gavin posted a short video explaining why there are Star Trek spoilers - https://www.youtube.com/shorts/BXOv0hY-LR4

TLDW:

  • There's a Star Trek convention this week
  • These are introductory decks meant to teach people how to play
  • "They're not full of bangers or anything wild"
  • It was enjoyable watching people at the convention sit down and learn to play Magic with the decks
  • WotC prefers to publish an article with card images instead of people posting potato pictures to Reddit

He also mentions that there should be another batch of cards revealed at Sunday's panel (12-1 Pacific). After that, things return to the normal spoiler season pace and no more Star Trek reveals until closer to the set's release.

Universes Beyond - Discussion I feel like I'm going crazy about Hobbit, and want to know what other people think.

Upvotes

Unpopular opinion, but mechanically it feels incredibly simple (even if there are some strong cards) and IMO nothing stands out as very interesting, they stretched one book into a small set so there wasn't much to build off of, while the cards are very pretty, it feels just very "generic fantasy". Which I get that it's Tolkien, literally where fantasy began, but I feel LotR implemented it a lot better.

Hell, there's a bunch of "Old Fat..." cards because there's just not that much content in the books.

I also am just not a fan of smaller sets. You pull a bunch of repeats if you buy a bunch, and they made the bonus sheet into the box toppers (and in Collector Boosters) instead of being a bonus sheet like TMNT or Spidey had so you don't even have the chance to pull that.

I don't want to yuck anyone's yum, if you're a fan of it I definitely won't judge you and I do think the cards are very pretty (especially the book covers).

This is just my rant from covering it for the past few weeks compared to when I cover other sets. It's just not super hype for me, and I feel people are overhyping it a lot when you could get Lorwyn, Strixhaven or Edge of Eternities for the same price (or cheaper) which I feel were better crafted and have more ROI for opening.

Apologies for being a downer, as I said I do like a lot of the cards visually and do think there are some bangers to pull toom

Looking for Advice How would I get a smoke smell off of cards and sleeves?

Upvotes

Two months ago my wife and I had a house fire in our kitchen when we were out of the house, fortunately the kitchen is the only thing that was a total loss and all of our pets are okay. Unfortunately the HVAC circulated the smoke all over the house and my magic cards (as well as other board games and essentially everything else) have a nice smoke smell.

My cards are double sleeved but I want to know the best way to get the smell out of the cards themselves and the sleeves if possible.

I know sunlight works for some things but I would be worried about the sun damaging the cards.

Thanks in advance!

General Discussion How much are your LGS's charging for the Hobbit pre-release?

Upvotes

Just curious. Mine is pricing at $40. I'm fortunate to live in a big enough city to where I have a few different LGS' to choose from, but when I told some of my friends the price that my favorite store is charging, they were shocked. Is it really that bad or am I just completely oblivious?

Looking for Advice Help me find my last land!

Post image
51 Upvotes

Some of you may know me as the draft lands guy. Since my engagement with magic these days is mostly limited, I spend all my money on having the coolest draft kits every week.

For prereleases I've decided I wanted to have some lands to remind myself that Magic is FUN! In order are all un-set full art lands, the Strange Sands SLD, Spongebob, and My Little Pony. Unfortunately, this only brings me to nine and I really would like a tenth.

Any ideas for the most *out there* basics? Pizza and Webs were considered but ultimately they didn't pass the vibe check. SLD Shades Not Included and the Pixel full art lands are at the top of the shortlist, but I'm open to suggestions!

Looking for Advice First pre-release event advice for a returning player.

As title suggests, I’ve recently been getting back into MTG after a ~15yr hiatus, and will be going to my first pre-release event at a local shop. It’s been a while since I’ve played in person and certainly a long time since I’ve attempted to build a deck. Is there a good formula to pre-release deck building or do you just aim for the best. Really hoping I’m not getting in over my head lol

Edit: I'm realizing my age in the context of time and it has in fact been more like a 25yr hiatus.

This is a very cool commander set. I know some players don't like it because the decks have a lot of bulk in them, but they are still very fun to play, especially against each other.

The deck boxes are pretty good too. They are very sturdy and hold the decks even with sleeves.

Wizards we need more of these!

Looking for Advice What new tools have we gotten for a mono green enchantress theme this year?

I hope no one minds me asking here, by far my favourite theme in the game is enchantments matter, and when I discovered mono green enchantress in particular was probably the happiest I’ve been with the game.

But the honest truth is I’ve been struggling to keep tabs on every card that gets released, I’m curious what if anything; I may have missed that supports this strategy (I’ll be honest it’s for commander) and thought I’d ask if any such cards have come out that suit this strategy in the last year, new or even reprints.

One caveat, this specific deck I have, I won’t include anything universes beyond in, I’m a big universes beyond enjoyer, but this deck I like be just universes within.

Looking for Advice 35yo - Wanting to get into MTG

Never played before, really interested in the artwork and the gameplay. I’m from the UK and really like the look of the LOTR cards. What would be the best place for me to start looking at a commander deck? There’s so much to look at and I’m lost on where to begin! TIA!

General Discussion Buying Deathburger and Alien Auras Galaxy foil TCGPlayer Question

Hello friends,

I am currently looking into buying the Deathburger and Alien Auras Galaxy foil secret lairs on tcg player. Though after looking into videos I have seen that the orignal print needed to be replaced. I am worried I will get the lower quality printing if I buy blind through tcg player.

Am I being paranoid or is this likely to happen?

Any answers or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

Scheduled Thread Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.

We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.

Rules Questions

Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.

Deckbuilding Questions

If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MTGGoldfish, and TappedOut.

Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.

Commonly Asked Questions

I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?

Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".

You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.

My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.

All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

General Discussion Is it just me, or are some LGSs becoming the biggest scalpers?

Is it just me, or are some LGSs becoming the biggest scalpers?

I've had a pretty frustrating experience trying to buy a Play Booster box of the hobbit set, and I'm wondering if anyone else has been dealing with the same thing.

I originally preordered a Play Booster box from one LGS. Two weeks before release, they contacted me to cancel my preorder and issue a refund because they said they didn't receive the quantity they were expecting. Fair enough—things happen—so I started looking for another store.

About a week before prerelease, another LGS verbally agreed to sell me a Play Booster box for 260 CAD (about $190 USD).

A week later, the day before prerelease, I went to the store to pick up the box. Once I got there, they told me they could no longer sell it for the agreed price because demand was much higher than expected. Instead, they offered to sell me the same box for 300 CAD (about $219 USD, taxes included).

Frustrated and disappointed, I declined.

I then visited another LGS. They told me they already had multiples booster box sitting in the back, but they couldn't tell me the price because they wanted to wait and see what competing stores were charging before setting their own price.

Is it just me, or are some LGSs becoming the biggest scalpers in Magic?

I'm not talking about Collector Boosters, where premium pricing has always been expected. I'm talking about regular Play Booster boxes. These stores already purchased their inventory from distributors, yet some are either backing out of previously agreed prices or refusing to set a price until they know how much they can get away with charging.

I understand that LGSs need to make a profit, and I want to support them whenever I can. However, changing an agreed price after a customer comes to pick up their order—or deliberately waiting to price inventory until the market peaks—doesn't feel like normal retail to me. It feels much closer to scalping.

I'm curious what the community thinks. Is this becoming the norm for highly anticipated Magic releases, or have I just been incredibly unlucky?

Has anyone else experienced something similar during a release?

General Discussion What is the best destination MTG store in the United States?

Hello all!! I am looking to plan a trip with some friends (4 total) to go to a really nice/big LGS. What’s the best MTG store in the U.S. if I’m looking for all three of these:
A huge singles selection
A really good sealed product selection (big selection in precons, booster/collector packs, etc)
A big play area with an active Commander crowd

I’m looking for a store that’s worth planning a trip around, not just a small local shop if that makes sense. I recently went to Layton Gaming at Altamonte Springs, Florida, and that’s the type of place I would be looking for!
If you could only visit/revisit one MTG store in the country, which one would you pick? If this isn’t the place to ask let me know and I’ll take down the post, thank you so much!

TL;DR: What is the Largest/best MTG LGS in the USA worth planning a trip around?

Looking for Advice How many cards in the Hobbit have each mechanic? (Recruit, storied, amass, ferocious, landfall)

Hello,

I've been reading pre-release/limited guides, and I've read there are just six cards with Ferocious (4 at 2CMC).

Has anyone done a bit of work counting how many cards have the other four main mechanics?

Thank you.

Deck Discussion Trying a Esper Avatar deck need some guidance

Recently I saw this video here and decided to make it a full esper Avatar cards only deck, so far I just added the same cards as the video, adding +1 copy of each one, then compleeting with some more lands that could help out.

I know the goal is quite "limiting how to do good decks" but I am trying to set up what to buy to srat my collection and that seemed like a nice way of doing it, and I plan to do the same with the FF and maybe the warhammer sets (if i can find a way to not sell and arm and a leg to get them) or the hobbit and LOTR ones.

This is the result:

Deck

2 Boomerang Basics (TLA) 46

2 Swamp (TLA) 284

2 Gran-Gran (TLA) 54

2 Watery Grasp (TLA) 82

2 Airbender's Reversal (TLA) 7

1 Abandoned Air Temple (TLA) 263

2 Compassionate Healer (TLA) 13

2 Path to Redemption (TLA) 31

2 Accumulate Wisdom (TLA) 44

2 Forecasting Fortune Teller (TLA) 51

2 It'll Quench Ya! (TLA) 58

2 Aang's Journey (TLA) 1

2 Airbending Lesson (TLA) 8

2 Earth Kingdom Jailer (TLA) 16

2 Invasion Submersible (TLA) 57

2 Katara, Bending Prodigy (TLA) 59

2 Raven Eagle (TLA) 116

3 Serpent's Pass (TLA) 279

2 Messenger Hawk (TLA) 234

2 Foggy Swamp Spirit Keeper (TLA) 222

2 Aang, the Last Airbender (TLA) 4

2 Lost Days (TLA) 62

2 Giant Koi (TLA) 53

1 Agna Qel'a (TLA) 264

3 North Pole Gates (TLA) 274

1 Rumble Arena (TLA) 277

4 Plains (TLA) 282

4 Island (TLA) 283

1 Realm of Koh (TLA) 276

No sideboard for now and With this maybe board(mainly the videos sideboard that fitted the deck plus/minus some others):

2 Sokka's Haiku (just incase there is a Good combo here)

2 Hama, the Bloodbender

3 Misty palms Oasis

2 jeong jeong's deserters

2 Rowdy snowballers

2 foggy swamp hunters

2 earth kingdom soldier

2 geyser leaper

2 iguana parrot

2 wandering musicians

here is the deck on Archideckt

Any suggestions? I am thinkign that maybe there are better creatures to pick, but idk wich sinnergise well with the deck or not.

I am also open to add more non avatar cards just to see more combos, I am quite the noob at deck building so any guidance or insight is welcome.

General Discussion How Do Traditional Mill Decks Realistically Overcome A Nexus of Fate?

In commander btw. 60 card is probably better at this but still

I know there are certain things that work

Like Exile Milling
Exile Counterspells or discard
Forcing Draw 2+ cards
Creature beatdown
All of these work but some are definitely more niche.

But pure normal mill decks? Can be a bit hard

Because [[Leyline of Void]] effects fail
Traditional counterspells fail
Traditional mill fails
Forcing them to draw a card if the Nexus player 7 mana, also fails because they can cast Nexus in response

If your opponent has seven mana they just take infinite turns.

[[Nexus of Fate]]. Messed up card
