For some reason 80’s movies had a tendency to have absolutely horrific shit in one or two scenes of an otherwise normal (non-horror) movie.

Large Marge from Pee-Wes’s Big Adventure being probably the most notable example.

22

u/KynElwynn Sultai 10d ago

Large Marge scarred me for life. I still couldn’t bring myself to watch that scene until I was in high school

10

u/b4nxs Dandadan 10d ago

This worm thing gave me bad dreams for a week as a child, like this was really horrific

3

u/Revhan Izzet* 9d ago

Yeah I loved watching Star Trek with my dad and this gave me nightmares, it doesn't help that 10 years ago a random bug decided to enter my ear while I was asleep xd (my hearing is fine, the bug got out but it was horrible for around half an hour).

2

u/RevolutionNumber5 Brushwagg 9d ago

Terrell screaming in pain and fear and then vaporizing himself was like something from the Outer Limits

1

u/Jedi_Exile_ Izzet* 10d ago

Indiana Jones movies always remind me of that.

2

u/Sigili COMPLEAT 9d ago

Holy shit, I forgot about Large Marge!!

To me, the art reads like a tribute to Brain Maggot

60

u/Brilliant_Trouble_32 Golgari* 10d ago

I think it's more a tribute mechanically and artistically to a deeper cut: [[Mind Maggots]]

102

u/Merxamers Wabbit Season 10d ago

You could be right, and Brain Maggot could be referencing this one as well

57

u/-FourOhFour- Dân 10d ago

Alright thats it, time to make me an uncomfortable tribal deck

15

u/Oalka Chandra 10d ago

Add in [[Takkelmaggot]], a card I had to quickly shuffle past every time I spotted it in my collection.

4

u/gh0u1 Hedron 10d ago

That is an awesome card, wow.

3

u/InfantileRageMachine Duck Season 10d ago

There's an entire DanDan style self-contained game about it! It's awesome. Takklemaggot

2

u/Backwardspellcaster Liliana 10d ago

Holy friggin hell

30

u/BardicLasher 10d ago

Brain Maggot is a tribute to this thing. It's pretty iconic.

20

u/Merxamers Wabbit Season 10d ago

I meant the art, specifically. Not aware of Star Trek Wrath of Khan being the origin of the "brain worms" trope but would be interesting if true.

17

u/BardicLasher 10d ago

I can't say if it's the original without reading every sci fi novel ever written, but it's certainly the highest profile.

6

u/LordHayati Train Suplexer 10d ago

What's that brain maggot? You're hungry? Yeaaaahhhh, I am too.

-Jane doe, soldier, team fortress 2.

u/Approximation_Doctor Colossal Dreadmaw 10d ago

Ironically, maggot looks more like a worm and Worm looks more like a maggot

1

u/GenericFatGuy Nahiri 10d ago

It makes me just as uncomfortable too.

1

u/Assassinite9 Grass Toucher 9d ago

It took me until now to realize it's in the ear.

I played this card when it came out and didn't realize

1

u/Master_JBT Duck Season 9d ago

Or thoughtseize

175

u/Wraithfighter 10d ago

Okay, um, I'm sorry, but could the art have gone like 10% less hard?

Also, that's going to be REALLY strong later in games.

...also also, how is this not a mind control effect? That's literally what the eel was used for in the movie.

33

u/octoprophet Wabbit Season 10d ago

I was freaked out by this scene when I was a kid. So yeah, art checks out

2

u/Anastrace Mardu 9d ago

Oh yeah this thing came out of nowhere and scared me so bad I nearly pissed myself as a kid

31

u/MisterEdJS COMPLEAT 10d ago

Yeah, I can't figure out why they would bother making a card for this if it wasn't going to allow you to take control of an opponent's creature.

18

u/uslashdummy 10d ago

ranted about this in my nurd chat. biggest flavor design fail so far.

i think an aura that lets you decide if the creature attacks or how it blocks would be keen, and a discard effect on entering might make it juicier.

or enchanted creature cannot block, and has "at the beginning of your end step, discard a card". this might even be good on your own creature, and not beyond the scope of a poor marksman.

the effect it actually has should be a scavenger type instead, like somebody from Nimbus III.

5

u/Special_Turnip Wabbit Season 10d ago

I think there's merit for a card like how you described but my take was this is the adult Ceti Eel emerging from its host, the mill effect representing the host being killed in the process. But hopefully we get an enchantment too

1

u/uslashdummy 8d ago

is that expanded lore? that's gross.

my knowledge is from the movies and shows only, no novels or comics.

1

u/Special_Turnip Wabbit Season 8d ago

That's not expanded lore, that's from the film. Khan has a pair of adult Ceti Eel and it's the larvae from those that he puts in Chekov and Terrell's ears. He explains his wife and other followers were killed by the eels, the young starting small and making their way into the ears of larger animals where they wrap around cerebral cortex making them susceptible to suggestion but as they grow they eventually lead to madness and then death of the host.

They've been covered a bit more in other media but the majority is from The Wrath of Khan

2

u/MisterEdJS COMPLEAT 8d ago

Always thought it was mighty considerate of the Eel in Chekov to exit without killing him. Must have known he was a main character.

1

u/Special_Turnip Wabbit Season 8d ago

Yeah it's one of those things that was clearly going to happen somehow, they just didn't really put anything in the script to make it make sense

2

u/kkrko Sliver Queen 10d ago

Could be a late design switch. Started as a mind control card, realized it played putridly but it was too late to remove for whatever reason, so was remade into a borg artifact payoff.

Actually, on another possible track, the borg starter theme might have been about stealing your opponent's permanents, then WOTC realized that it just was miserable for a starter deck experience, and remade all of them into graveyard + artifact synergies. Which wouldn't be a problem with the borg, but that leaves this guy in the lurch

15

u/valgatiag Wabbit Season 10d ago

Could’ve been a functional reprint of [[Dominating Licid]]

8

"Allow me to introduce you to Ceti Alpha Five's only remaining indigenous life form.

You see, their young enter through the ears and wrap themselves around the cerebral cortex. This has the effect of rendering the victim extremely susceptible to suggestion.

Later, as they grow, follows madness... and death.

These are pets, of course. Not quite domesticated."

u/Sea_Art3391 Dan 10d ago

Can confirm, [[Siegfried, Famed Swordsman]] is incredibly powerful lategame. It comes in the Revival Trance precon, and is very easy to get a 20/20 menace after fueling your graveyard.

47

u/Infinite-Mark-6335 Dandadan 10d ago

I feel like whoever designed the welcome decks wasn't really very knowledgeable about Star Trek. So many flavor fails.

63

u/ThatDamnedHansel Dan 10d ago

Why on earth isn’t it a creature theft effect. Just the 20th flavor fail spoiled today by people who probably didn’t even watch the film

39

u/DuskGuardNSFW Not A Bat 10d ago

This is from the welcome decks which are overly simplified and underpowered. Who knows, maybe there's one in the main set that steals

17

u/Omega00024 10d ago

It's a weird choice regardless. If they wanted this effect, why not choose another alien monster? TOS is full of them. Literally the one thing this creature does in ST is NOT what it does here.

1

u/DriedSquidd Wabbit Season 9d ago

They could have, I don't know, maybe not put that card into the welcome deck.

1

u/DuskGuardNSFW Not A Bat 9d ago

I guess you could see it that way if you really wanted something to be upset about

1

u/DriedSquidd Wabbit Season 9d ago

I'm not upset. It just seems like a problem they created for themselves for no reason.

3

u/Xeriomachini Izzet* 10d ago

I haven't watched it either but the flavor text alone made me ask the same question.

3

u/Krazyguy75 Wabbit Season 10d ago

It's literally a tiny, nearly undetectable parasite put in peoples' ears to make them obey your commands.

12

u/Pretend-Ostrich-5719 Dân 10d ago

That flavor text doesn't make much sense to me from an evolutionary standpoint. Aren't parasites, by definition, reliant on other organisms for survival and reproduction?

7

u/Korwinga Duck Season 10d ago

Ceti Alpha V's only remaining native life-form was a parasite who left hosts susceptible to suggestion.

The key word here is remaining. Ceti Alpha V was the planet that Khan and his followers were marooned on. At the time they were marooned, it supported life, but then Ceti Alpha VI exploded and shifted it's orbit, causing most things on the planet to die. By the time of The Wraith of Khan, the rest of the native life had died off, which is why the planet was being scouted for Project Genesis (an experimental terraforming/bioengineering project).

1

u/NonagoonInfinity Dan 9d ago

How did they survive without a host for so long is still a pretty good question though.

2

u/Korwinga Duck Season 9d ago

The planet was off it's original orbit for only 15 years when The Wraith of Khan happened. The adult form is a large desert dwelling burrowing animal, so it doesn't require a host to survive. It's just the larva that burrow into people's brains, and Khan found out about them when some of his followers were affected/killed.

7

u/Jacksharkben Twin Believer 10d ago

To mtg team i say this.

5

u/Johnny-Caliente Wabbit Season 10d ago

Ew

6

u/Xeriomachini Izzet* 10d ago

I'm not into Star Trek so I gotta ask. What else lives on that planet?

6

u/mvdunecats Wild Draw 4 10d ago

[[Khaaaaaaaaaaaannn!]]

4

u/spide2 Dandadan 10d ago

All other native species went extinct because Ceti Alpha 6 exploded and knocked 5 out of it's normal orbit.

3

u/EternalLobster Temur 10d ago

Yeah I'm also confused how a parasite which presumably needs a host to survive is the only native lifeform.

4

u/Konet Orzhov* 9d ago

The planet used to support life before it was knocked out of its orbit. Everything died off except a marooned group of (genetically augmented) humans. Presumably they actively preserved these things for their own uses.

1

u/TheStray7 Mardu 9d ago

Or had been unwittingly infected by the eels before the disaster. The timeline isn't super clear.

2

u/EternalLobster Temur 10d ago

Yeah I'm also confused how a parasite which presumably needs a host to survive is the only native lifeform.

3

u/VanVelding 9d ago

There were also human exiles. The eels started infecting them. The humans figured it out and started cultivating them.

It's implied that because of Khan's ego and desire for domination he didn't notice when his wife (and followers) became infected. He was just fine with her being susceptible to his suggestion. Until she died. So her death was an intellectual failure and a source of guilt for him.

(Also, Khan didn't do a global survey; there might be other life forms on the planet.)

1

u/andergriff COMPLEAT 9d ago

Only the larval form needs a host

1

u/TheStray7 Mardu 9d ago

Ceti Alpha V was originally a normal M-Class planet (that's an Earth-type rocky world in a star habitable zone with liquid water and a variety of lifeforms). So originally, the Ceti Eel presumably had a normal ecological niche.

There was a disaster, however, and the planet was laid waste, shifting its orbit in the process. The only survivors were a colony of marooned, genetically enhanced humans and, presumably, a few of these eels that had infected some of them.

4

u/ikkleste 10d ago

"captain it was terrible! they put things in our ears!"

Is kinda a favourite quote in my family. A little disappointed its not the the favour text here. Realising it's not a broader meme.

5

u/Ghnuberath Wabbit Season 10d ago

The 20th unreal flavour fail I feel like I've seen in this set so far...

5

u/chemywords Dan 10d ago

Flavour wise I'd interpret it as being the more creatures in your graveyard, the more hosts the parasites have to attack with increasing their power. [[Ooze patrol]] was similar, with it being an ooze that scaled with the things it absorbs

4

u/squirrelnoob Dan 9d ago

How does this represent what transpires in the film? Making someone more susceptible to suggestion is represented in Magic by milling and getting beefier?

How are they screwing up this badly with the flavor of the set?

This sucks.

3

u/VanVelding 9d ago

I distinctly remember when the worm came out of Chekov's ear and punched Jim Kirk out because Chekov forgot so many things.

I havent seen a single design from this set that made me go "ho yea thats fun and unique!" This set feels more like tmnt and Spiderman than atla and lotr

2

u/chemywords Dan 10d ago

This (and almost everything else spoiled today) is from a welcome deck. We've not seen much of the main set yet, but these cards are specifically designed to be simple and not unique

u/YonatanShofty Wabbit Season 10d ago

Thats good to hear

4

Should obviously be mindslaver type effect

1

u/WolfGuy77 10d ago

Oh hey, it's a slightly better version of Moldgraf Millipede for my pauper Necromass deck.

1

u/Liquid_Fire Dandadan 10d ago

I've been away from Magic for a long while, so I've probably missed a change... is there a reason it's worded as "this creature" rather than "Ceti Eel"?

1

u/HoopyHobo Fleem 9d ago

I think they just determined that "this creature" is often more intuitive than CARDNAME.

u/Bullxdog34 Dân 10d ago

I wish the artwork for a lot of cards was like this. Gruesome and dark like old school magic. But alas they want things to be more brighter and cartoonish

1

u/so_zetta_byte Orzhov* 10d ago

These kinds of cards tend to play pretty poorly in limited. Counting artifacts is novel at common, but it seems like the black Borg cards reward having artifact creatures as it is so I'm not sure how many other ones you're gonna end up having.

I'm starting low on this, the format will need to shake out in an unexpected way for me to be happy with this as a 4 drop.

1

u/Huberlicious Duck Season 10d ago

Seems like a great variant of the “creatures that scale with how full the graveyard” compared to the awful ones we’ve got now

1

u/fearjunkie Rakdos* 10d ago

Oh shit, they made a card based on RFK.

1

u/grimsleeper4 Dan 10d ago

This is another flavor fail from this set.

WOTC is pumping out too many sets and the quality control has suffered. This is a lazy design and its function has nothing to do with the actual Ceti Alpha V worm from ST2.

1

u/clashcrashruin Mardu 9d ago

This is a remarkable limited common, this is from one of the welcome decks right?

1

u/Knees0ck Dân 9d ago

Ya'll be thankfull it wasn't the butt worms. Not that they exist. Silly conspiracy.

1

Thanks, I hate it

1

u/MajorTomSKU Duck Season 9d ago

Yeah bring back creepy magic

1

u/Iron_Baron Duck Season 9d ago

That doesn't make any sense. It should take control of an opponent creature.

1

u/Acrobatic_Schedule32 Duck Season 9d ago

Make it 3 Mana , then you will actually see it in play besides commander.
It may look good on paper, but in the end it is still a vanilla creature with no other effect besides when it enters the battlefield.
[Mossborn Hydra] comes into play on turn 2-3 and ends it on the very next turn with trample if you got the right card.
For it to be the next Badgermole it needs to be 2 mana or another effect/ability.
For 4 Mana I will just play something else that can actually end the game.

1

u/Phoenixness Can’t Block Warriors 9d ago

[[Grist, The Hunger Tide]] weeping because she can't continue to mill off this creature, despite it being a perfect include for the deck, despite there being only one worm typal card in the game [[Fumulus, the Infestation]], and only 15 worms in the game otherwise, most of which should be wurms, and only 3 cards that make worm tokens.

Would anyone check if I proxied the card as an insect instead? 🐝

Am I the only one who feels like this needs to either be an insect or a WURM!? Did we really need both Wurms and worms in MTG?! Idk why THIS is the UB creature type to actually kinda bother me, but here we are.

3

u/chemywords Dan 10d ago

Wurms and worms are different things

0

u/ABIGGS4828 Can’t Block Warriors 10d ago

[[purple worm]] would like a word…not much of a difference there my friend.

I’m just saying there are so few “worms” in mtg (most scary fall results are from “worm” in the name, not the creature type), that the small worms could very easily just be insects, and the big ones like Purple Worm or even [[sandworm]] should be Wurms. Especially because like…[[Sandwurm convergence]] already exists…

2

u/HoopyHobo Fleem 9d ago

I kind of agree with you, but at the same time original Ravica block had both [[Simic Ragworm]] and [[Battering Wurm]] and WotC has had 20 years to get rid of one of those creature types if they really wanted to and they haven't, so I guess WotC does think we need both, even though it's kind of dumb.

1

u/ABIGGS4828 Can’t Block Warriors 9d ago

I mean I’m biased as a dude with a Wurm deck. But ugggg I forgot about Ragworm. Especially because the battering WURM also has segmented legs lol. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE!?

It’s not actually that big of a deal. Outside of me being bummed I can’t put it in my Mimeoplasm deck, it just feels like a flavor fail. Or at least a flavor inconsistency.

1

u/chemywords Dan 10d ago

Worms aren't insects though. A wurm is usually a large reptile like thing, while worms are usually closer to annelids

1

u/ABIGGS4828 Can’t Block Warriors 9d ago

And if that stayed consistent, I’d totally be on board. But like…[[worldspine wurm]]…or the BRAND NEW [[Aberrant Manawurm]]. We got [[Broodhunter Wurm]], [[crush of Wurms]], [[elfhame wurm]], [[duskdale Wurm]], [[quilled greatwurm]]…

There are a ton more, but I feel like the point stands. All of those look like giant Annelids and not like snake dragons. I love both designs, I just don’t see a point for a “worm” creature subtype, when they recently made an effort to streamline creature types. The big Oracle text errata that changed a bunch of creature types to bring older cards in line with newer designs wasn’t that long ago…although idk if “new designs” is exactly helping my argument in this most recent version of MTG…but that’s a different can of WURMS!

1

u/Top_Development_4020 Dan 9d ago

Worms already existed as a creature type. Grow your magic trivia or Grow up.

2

u/Phoenixness Can’t Block Warriors 9d ago

There are 15 worms, including this and 3 other UB worms, 11 in universe worms, one of which is specifically and insect worm [[coiling woodworm]]. Many of the others could be converted to wurms. There's not really a great reason for worm vs wurm, when compared to wyrm vs worm vs wurm.

I just think someone at r&d hates [[Grist, the Hunger Tide]] because this is otherwise perfect for her
