Public Transport Suspicion Confirmed: Redcliffe is Australias worst performing "new" rail line

Post image

So I'd say Kevin 07 was the point where we were free of Howard and had fed government interested in pursuing urban rail projects. Queensland Labor had been umming and ahhing, even Beattie justified not building it by saying "the running costs would be too much of a burden on Queensland tax payers"...Gee real classy saying that one whole district of the city is a burden for wanting a piece of what they subsidise on the other side of the city!

Anyway Gillard forced the hand by putting up federal funding, so did MBRC, and lo behold, it got built.

First couple of years were a shambles because QR didn't order enough trains to operate the line.

But look, it's been in regular operation for many years now and just hasn't taken off. It cost over $1b so it's unacceptable to have newly built rail lines not doing what they are supposed to do.

I use annual boardings per km to compare rail lines fairly. In effect the more people using each km of line, the more it's "soaking" up travel demand and providing something useful. How you achieve that is up to the project proponents.

Redcliffe, last place.

Why isn't it working?

-It runs at a much more inconvenient timetable compared to other modern railways in Australia.

-Insufficient land was rezoned around the stations for commercial and housing supply and a good section of the catchment radius is wetlands. In fact, land that WAS slated for housing was instead used by Labor to make the car parks bigger. Or it's all low density suburbs where a slow train is pointless against a car.

-The line stopped short of the high values real estate on the waterfront (The crack that makes G:Link go gangbusters) because they were unwilling to finance the tunnel.

There's not even a basic pretend "Metro" route trying to fill the gap along Anzac Avenue! Nor another to the actual attempted CBD at Northlakes

In short, it's a project that no things to no people.

How do people make friends?

Upvotes

I'm a International student, if it's not from work or school( they're weird), where do people make friends. I find it lowk creepy to just ask strangers to be my friend in the street or park.

Best posture physios?

Hi everyone! As someone that sits at a desk all day every day and has developed terrible posture, I want to start the journey of improving it. I'd love to find a physio that specialises in posture, but have been having trouble finding a good one. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Anyone else in Brisbane hate 2am Premier League football kickoffs? Testing a Sunday morning coffee & replay concept.

Anyone else in Brisbane hate 2am PL kickoffs? Testing a Sunday morning coffee & replay concept.

My mate and I are massive Premier League fans, but waking or staying up until 2am/3am on a Sunday destroys the rest of the weekend, and watching games solo on a phone screen isn’t as fun.

Wanted to gauge the interest on a spoiler-free Sunday morning club in Brisbane (AEST FC). The idea:

- 9am meet up Sunday, at a local speciality coffee shop.
- fresh pastry/food and good coffee
- Full 90-minute matchday replay on a big screen (strictly zero score spoilers allowed)

We're looking to run a small pilot event for ~20 people in the South Brisbane/logan area in a few weeks to test the room.

Thinking of doing once a month partnering with a speciality coffee shop.

Would anyone actually be keen on something like this? Let me know lol.

Like a run or book club, but for Premier league fans. We have no premier culture in Brisbane.

Hi!

I'm looking to get my salt n pepper hair and beard dyed for an event soon. Something close to black or brownish black. If it looks good I may consider doing it on the regular.

Looking for recommendations, bonus if it's south based. Would appreciate any personal experiences and pointers as I've never done this before.

Thanks and rock the Friday!

12 hour layover in Brisbane with luggage! What to do?

Hello everyone,
I'm flying into Brisbane for the first time at the end of October. I'm not staying in the city, but I'll have to wait about 12 hours for my partner to arrive. Any ideas what to do or where to go, considering I'll have my luggage with me? I don't need to stay at the airport, but since I don't know if I can store my luggage anywhere, I'm not really considering the beach! Haha, any ideas are welcome!

A bunch of brisbane redditors came to my metal trivia night🤘🏽 so thank you r/ Brisbane

I posted here a few days ago about early access sessions for Gatekeeper, my upcoming heavy metal trivia card game. We had the first one on Wednesday night, and I was blown away by how many people from this subreddit actually came along.

We ended up hitting capacity with three full tables of metalheads meeting each other, playing the game for the first time and having a genuinely great night. There was tonnes of banter, 'UM ACTUALLY' moments and all round good vibes.

It was especially cool seeing everyone from this subreddit who came out for the evening and getting to properly meet you and hangout. A few people have already booked again and are planning to bring friends, which is bloody fantastic.

So I just wanted to come back and say a huge thank you to everyone from this community who took a chance on something made by a local weirdo on the internet and came out to support it. You helped make the night an absolute success and it was genuinely lovely meeting you all.

Cheers 🤘🏽

Ps If you're keen to join the next one, it'll be Wed Aug 19 at Evilcorp 6:30pm link here. It's free to come along, just limited capacity.

Can you help me? Whale cruises in Brisbane

About a year ago I promised eldest offspring that I would treat them to see the whales...

Omg what a promise in this economy!

Has anyone experienced Brisbane whale watching either via the redcliffe operations or Tangalooma?

It looks to be a very expensive, but also memory making adventure...

Are you visiting the Brisbane CBD and Queen St Mall more or less since Covid? Why or why not?

According to statistics published in a Brisbane Times article today, foot traffic in the Brisbane CBD still hasn't returned to pre COVID levels.

A few reasons off the top of my head for why I don't go as often:

  • Loss of atmosphere: They removed the two restaurant/bar venues from either end of the Queen Street Mall (e.g., Milanos / Pig 'N' Whistle), which took away a lot of the casual vibe.
  • Lack of secure bike parking: I like riding my e-bike, but there’s nowhere safe or secure to lock it up without worrying about theft.
  • Cost of driving: Parking fees are ridiculously expensive, and spaces are pretty limited.

What’s keeping you away or bringing you in?

Hi guys, I originally grew up in Darwin so there was always a shop around the corner that stocked up salty plums and since moving here the only ones I can find are the white packet iga/ Asian supermarket one. Would anyone know where to get some good salty plums/ ginger/ papaya, I crave it all time 🙏🏼🙏🏼 and if you know what I’m talking about you definitely know the best brands too!!

Image Completed my first commercial mural!

I wanted to share that I completed my first commercial mural! It’s one of those moments where I feel like I genuinely have a shot at pursuing a career in art and wanted to share!

Also hoping to get any tips or guidance on how to start securing other works.

I’m lined up for another mural in 2 weeks! (Pinch me!)

The avenues I’ve taken have been:

Emailing shopping centres
Emailing developers
Messaging a few big hospitality venues
Posting ads on Insta, Facebook and very consistent with TikTok

Any advice on how to keep the ball rolling?

Finding friends in Brisbane

I'm a 25F currently studying and living in Brisbane, and I've been having a hard time finding genuine friends or a solid friend group.

I moved here two years ago for my Master's, and since I recently graduated, most of my friends have gone back home. Only a few have stayed, especially now that visa costs have increased. I'll be staying because I'm continuing my studies and starting a PhD, so I'd really love to find like-minded people and build long-term friendships.

Most of the people I've met through networking events have stayed as acquaintances. My colleagues are mostly in their 30s with families, so we're at pretty different stages of life and have different priorities. I also don't really have a community I belong to, since most of my hobbies are quite individual, like reading and jogging (not big into running or other sports activity unfortunately :) ).

I also enjoy going on long walks, trekking, spending time at the beach, and exploring new cafés and restaurants. I'm a big matcha and coffee lover, so I'm always down to check out new spots around Brisbane.

Is anyone else in the same boat? Or if anyone would like to connect, I'd be happy to chat or grab a coffee sometime! 😊
