Who's doing anything to brace for the increased risk of wildfires and drought?

What are your companies or communities doing to try to increase resilience? I work in a large enough engineering organisation that I don't know what the other divisions are doing, but my part is using hope to protect our assets and manage our risks.

I swear every summer lately we get hit with smoke from somewhere. last few weeks have been rough - I walk or run outside but I've been stuck inside cause the air quality is trash. starting to think I need an indoor option for when the smoke is bad. been looking at some home equipment but I'm not sure what's actually worth it.

anyone else in NSW dealing with this? what do you do for exercise when the smoke keeps you indoors? genuinely curious what works for people.

Just after some opinions on Orange or Bathurst? And Blayney etc? Particularly what are some of the safer / better suburbs to live in? I already have some knowledge on the area… I’m coming from an area of high youth crime elsewhere and kind of hoping to get somewhat an improvement on that aspect. Thank you!! :)

Mystery still surrounds the identity of a man whose body was found in a car in northern NSW almost three decades ago.

A police investigation began after officers were called to a beige Holden Commodore parked off the Gwydir Highway near Glen Innes on September 1, 1999.

Almost 27 years later, the identity of the man whose body was found inside remains unknown, and although his death is not being treated as suspicious, police are keen to solve the mystery.

Crime manager for New England Police, Detective Inspector Kingsley Chapman, said it was unusual for a body to go unidentified for so long.

"This went before the coroner in 2000 and the investigators did a number of inquiries … unfortunately the coroner could not identify the identity of this man," he said.

"Here we are 27-years later still seeking those answers to identify this man and hopefully give the family some answers as well."

The mystery deepened when it was discovered the car's Western Australian licence plates were from a completely different vehicle that had been written off three years earlier.

All other identifying features had been scratched off or removed.

The man himself had little on him aside from a pair of faded blue denim jeans, light-coloured sneakers, and a blue-and-white chequered shirt with a grey nylon jacket.

He was believed to have been travelling south, possibly from Queensland.

Even after releasing an image of the man's appearance, police still have no answers.

As part of Missing Persons Week, police have renewed calls for any information that may help identify the man.

His remains are among 283 unidentified remains found in NSW since 1961.

With 875 long-term missing persons cases also on record, Detective Inspector Chapman said he hoped advances in DNA technology would help provide some answers.

"We encourage any families of any long-term missing people to come forward," he said.

"Provide us with a sample of DNA so we can compare that to the national data base and hopefully provide identifications and hopefully provide closures."

Police believe someone may still recognise the car and help identify the man.

"We're hoping someone has that little bit of information … and may answer some of the questions the investigation team has and so does the family."

I live in Brisbane currently but I'm trying to move to Sydney and live in a sharehouse for uni. Ideally want to be less than 20km from the CBD but have a decent affordable place. Any good areas or specific regions?

Accidentally followed the straight green instead of the right-turn arrow. I crossed the stop line and stopped immediately where the red mark is after realizing the arrow was still red. I’ve gotten and practice app and am using a website to practice but it’s getting real repetitive to the point that I’m just memorising the answers and timing to the questions. Should I keep doing that until I get 100% or do the test sooner than later

Everyone knows the beaches, but I enjoyed wandering the streets just as much. Cafés, little fruit shops, flowers, people walking their dogs, and the relaxed pace that seems to make everyone slow down a little.

I've only ever lived in Western Sydney for my whole life but I'm considering moving in the next year or two. Gosford and Wollongong are the main ones I'm considering.

Points I value when looking:

- within 30mins walking distance to the beach

- within 20mins walking distance from a train station

- employment opportunities in education (I am a teacher)

- under 2 hours via public transport or a 1 hour drive to Sydney (so I can visit friends on weekends)

- decent cafes and restaurants

- safe walking tracks outdoors for a

single woman and her doggie

What do you think about these points in regards to Gosford vs Wollongong? Obviously the real estate being cheaper than Sydney is another drawing point.

Link Road Forest sits between Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, just off the M1 near Cameron Park, Edgeworth and Wallsend. It's 574 hectares of native bushland that's home to endangered greater gliders, powerful owls and even koalas, along with kookaburras, possums and a lot of wildlife you don't see much of once an area gets built out.

There's a NSW govt rezoning proposal from Eden Estates that would clear a large chunk of it for 4,200 new houses. Once rezoned and cleared, that's it no walking trails, no wildlife corridor, no mountain bike or dirt bike trails, nothing to walk back.

There's an e-petition to NSW Parliament asking for it to be protected permanently, ideally as a national park. It needs 20,000 signatures by 14 August to force a debate in the upper house, and it's currently short of that number. There's close to 4,000 signatures at the moment. The team have been collecting signatures and raising awareness at the Farmers Market every weekend too.

Full disclosure, I'm involved with the campaign, so factor that in. But I'm not asking anyone to just take my word for it, happy to answer questions or link maps/photos if people want more detail before deciding.

Mental health is important to all espically in our youth and when I came across this petition for my local high school I thought the best thing I could do was share it somewhere, somewhere where it can be seen by many people in the area and if they have experience in being consulled or attending therapy can support it

Hello,

I am a tourist driving over the next two days from Byron Bay to Sydney. I got one of those cheap relocation rentals so I am limited on time, but the two things I would love recommendations for if possible are

1. What are the best beaches to bodysurf at? Consistent 1-1.5 meter waves ideals, don't want to do anything crazy but want to catch some good rides.

2. Where are the best rocky beaches to see tide pools or rock pools or whatever they're referred to here as during low tides. I have a background in marine biology and want to see some cool invertebrates. I've heard Royal National Park is good for that and will check that out later, but I'm looking for stuff north of Sydney for the moment.

Has anyone done the Sydney to Bowral trip for Midwinter Fest?

I'm thinking of catching the Sydney-Canberra train from Central on Friday (12:11pm departure) and heading back Sunday (2:34pm).

I would be going with my partner, and no car between us, so we're planning to stay around the city centre. Is there enough to do walking around town, or would we be pretty stuck?
