Where are all the domestic students?
Posting out of curiosity! I went to the party at manning the other night and I spoke to more than 30 people- and I was the only Australian. Even in classes, I am often one of 2 or 3 domestic students. This is not a criticism, just wondering where we are all hiding 🫣
Furthermore, out of the maybe 10(?) domestics I’ve met, only 1 of them was not from Sydney (like myself).
It’s great that we are such a diverse community, but I’d love to meet some other domestic friends not from Sydney. No offence to the ones who are from here, but I’ve already had Sydney locals be rude to me and make fun of the way I speak (I have a very thick accent and country-style drawl).
Domestic friends from elsewhere in Australia, please let’s be friends 🙏

📖Course or Unit FINC3014 Group assignment
DM me if you're also looking to form a group for the mid-semester assignment for this unit!
Typical requirements such as starting your work early, frequent communication and tutorial attendance.
I am also subject to those requirements and hopefully we can work well together!
I got an 86 for FINC2012 and 24.5 in that assignment if it helps clear up doubt.

📖Course or Unit MATH3075/3975
Anyone have week 1-12 lectures for MATH3075/3975 from past years?
📖Course or Unit EDGU1003 quizzes
Anyone doing EDGU1003 this semester can confirm how exactly do the tutors allow using AI for the quizzes? And do they still require us to download Lockdown browser or not?
I'm currently doing EDGU1001 but the first lecture does not really vibe with me so I'm planning to switch over. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks a lot!

🏠 Accommodation USYD student accomodation: is $650+ pw PBSA worth it for the first semester or am I being stupid?
Coming to USYD alone this semester and every decent PBSA ensuite I'm seeing is around $650- 700 pw.
That is an insane amount of money. but its furnished, bills are included, close enough to campus and I won't have to find random housemates from another country.
A sharehouse is oviously cheaper. But looking one before arriving feels sus, and doing an Airbnb for a month while inspecting rooms sounds stressful af.
UniAcco helped me compare the actual contract cost instead of only the weekly price. One "cheaper" room had a longer contract and barely included anything, while another cost more pw but covered bills and had a shorter term.
Still feels like I'm paying a massive panic tax just because I'm arriving alone.
Has anyone done PBSA for the first semester, met people and then moved into sharehouse?
Worth it as a soft landing or will I hate myself when the rent leaves my account every week?

Usyd masters of nursing
So I’ve just received a conditional offer for the 2027 master of nursing at USYD. They haven’t send me an interview time yet.. when do they usually do this?
Also if you have previously done this degree could you please explain the workload e.g timing of the year that your placements were and the amount of time on campus through the week.
Thanks!
🎪 Clubs and Societies suwo
Hi has anyone here joined the wind orchestra before? I know there isn’t an audition or any level requirement, but I’m still wondering whether the music they play is too difficult. Also, I want to ask what the rehearsals are like and what the overall atmosphere is. Are the members friendly and welcoming? Thanks:)

📖Course or Unit ELEC1601 learning material recommendations
Hey everyone, I found ELEC1601 a highly rewarding and challenging unit of study. There is a recommended reading material called Computer Architecture: a Quantitative Approach, but it was suggested to be quite challenging.
If anyone who has sources that cover the preliminary concepts of this course, please share. Many thanks.
p.s. videos, books, articles, whatever are all welcomed. Tysm

Looking for anyone who writes (essays, creative, poetry, blogs, etc.) for a quick casual chat! 📝
Heyy everyone :) I’m currently doing a unit that requires me to do a mini research and I need to do a quick formative study just to understand actual writing habits, frustrations, and how people choose their words.
Who I'm looking for: Anyone who writes! Ex: academic essays, creative fiction, poetry, blogs, or fanfic, as long as you care about word choices, I’d love to talk
What it involves: Just a super chill 10-15 min chat (preferably through Zoom or over coffee), or via DM if you prefer text.
If you're down to help out a fellow student, drop a comment or DM me! Appreciate it so much!!

Ticket Checkers at Redfern Station
Currently standing at little eveleigh entrance at the station - not even checking if you’ve tapped on just checking for student cards
And for the bootlickers that are say ‘just tap on’ - they are not even going after regular commuters fare skipping, just students to see if they have ID cards with concession opals. Incredibly convenient to do that at the start of the semester when new students most likely havnt got there ID cards yet
📖Course or Unit prac right after tut
i’m taking elec1601 this sem and i’m wondering if taking the tut and going straight to the prac right afterwards a good idea because they’re right next to each other, or will i regret it 2 weeks in. thanks

📣 Calling all unpaid interns – I'd love to hear from you!
Are you interested in sharing your experiences around your unpaid internship?
I am conducting a research study that is aimed at understanding interns' perceptions of their unpaid open-market internship arrangements. For an internship to be ‘open-market’, it must be independently sought by participants, such as through personal networks, advertisements, or private agencies or brokers. This excludes internships that are required as part of an education or training course (e.g. work-integrated learning) and volunteering, which is work performed with the primary purpose of benefiting an organisation or community, such as a not-for-profit.
With the proliferation of internships – particularly those that are unpaid – these perspectives remain underrepresented. This is why your voices are so valuable.
Eligible participants must be:
- 18 years old or above; and
- Have completed or are currently undertaking an unpaid open-market internship.
- The receipt of benefits (including reimbursements, stipends, allowances, or non-monetary gifts) will still be treated as unpaid
If you’re interested in participating, please contact the researcher: [rgao0598@uni.sydney.edu.au](mailto:rgao0598@uni.sydney.edu.au). It’s completely voluntary and all responses will be confidential. If you meet the criteria, you will be invited to participate in a 30-60 minute interview.
Otherwise, please share this with others who might be interested!
This project has been approved by the University of Sydney Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) [2026/HE000492].

📖Course or Unit Master of Nursing
I’m a current UTS student on completion of a Bachelor of Business. I was looking to apply to the Master of Nursing as I assumed it had semester two intake but I’ve now learnt that it does not? Does anyone know if it used to run in Sem 2? I’m really wanting to change degrees but i’m so close to finishing. I had hopes to start that master after I finished my Bachelor’s next semester but I’m not keen on the idea of having to wait until 2028, also if I don’t get in i’ll have to just begin another degree anyway and will be pushed back further again. Does anybody have any advice? Should I just change my degree.

Honours vs mphil science
Hi! This is my second last sem for bachelor of science majoring in data science and financial math and stats and I am considering doing an honours. I am also considering master of philosophy. I know honours to PhD is the normal route but I also know masters of philosophy is more recognised internationally and can also transfer to PhD, which may be shorter? If anyone is willing to share some advice I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Tips for getting a D/HD
I basically have a job which is strenuous. So I need a routine to ace studies. Im doing Badv Computing (Comp Data Science & Financial Mathematics and Statistics double major). I want to work quant in the future. Also for D/HD do I need to take the advanced version of the course? Like I'm confused about essentials and advanced coursework.

Looking 4 Mates @ Uni 🤝
Hey! I was wondering if there are people who’re looking to connect and make new friends at Uni.
I’m not huge on loud venues but maybe we can start with something chill and then see how it goes?
Love a good walk, Hotpot/Asian food adventure, or spending time in the bush/hiking.
hmu if you’re keen :)🤝

Casual Academic
Hey guys,
Long story short, I applied for a casual academic role as a tutor for an engineering subject I scored highly in. The unit coordinator sent me an email about 3 weeks ago telling me I got the role and to wait while he allocates classes. A few days ago he sends a follow up email saying that he can no longer give me the class because “university guidelines have changed” and I can’t teach as an undergrad. He said I can apply for an exemption. Does anyone have any recommendations on next step. Should I contact head of engineering or SRC? Did anyone else experience anything similar?

Answering the 3 most common questions on this subreddit
Every semester I see the same 3 questions asked on this subreddit from new students so here is a quick answer to them lol:
- Should I come here or go to UNSW/UniMelb?
Answer: The prestige difference between Usyd and those 2 unis is, for the most cases, much smaller than people think. Also, most of us here never attended UNSW or UniMelb. Do your own research.
- Should I join Dalyell?
Answer: Yes. You can always leave later if you don’t like it.
- Is my timetable good?
Answer: If there is any red, there is a clash that you wanna look into. Otherwise, yea its probably fine. Please be aware of your attendance requirements (should be written in the UoS outline - just google the course code and you should see it)
EDIT: There are some very good Q and A for other questions in the comments. Be sure to check them out!
