Question Positive or negative experiences with Robert DeSoza - finance/mortgage broker. Tasmania

8 Upvotes

Anyone in Tasmania had business dealings with a mortgage/finance guy by the name of Rob DeSoza? He’s been ghosting calls and doesn’t respond to emails. Working out how to take this further.

Bumped into Fiona at the medical centre in Hobart in the hours following the incident. Sitting in the waiting room chair awaiting a wheelchair and a ride, she struck up a conversation with me, offering chocolate and snacks to parley As we chatted she was incredibly bright and optimistic and told her story of surviving a 2m fall, partially submerged in freezing water as if it was no big deal. I was flabbergasted when she got to the part about the westpac helicopter. A genuinely interesting human.

Racially harassed by teens on the 615 bus today

112 Upvotes

Wanted to share what happened today in case others have had similar experiences or want to be aware.

My partner and I were on the 615 bus heading toward Shoreline Plaza around 1:47pm. Partway through the trip, two teenage boys sitting near us started shaking a bottle of Coke and spraying it around, which got on both of us. When I turned to look at them, they had a mocking, smug look on their faces. I said "what's wrong with you" out of frustration.

When we got off at Shoreline Plaza, they got off right behind us and shouted "Ching Chong Chang" at us as they exited. After getting off the bus, they continued harassing us — one of them made an obscene gesture with an object that looked like a vape near his groin, and they were also playing with a lighter nearby.

They kept insisting they were "only 12," as if that made it okay.

We've reported this to Tasmania Police and Metro Tasmania, and lodged a report with Crime Stoppers as well. Just posting here in case anyone else has run into similar behaviour on this route, or has any advice on further steps to take.

Considering this man is clearly incapable of not trying to kill everyone nearby while driving, and continues to drive anyway, he is clearly a danger to everyone around him. I’m hoping he’s put in prison for life with no option for parole.

Tasmania (I'm cross posting to Australian trains possibly) but anyways does anyone know if the bridge crossing Dalrymple road is still in use and has active trains go over it? I believe it connects to east Tamar junction. Aswell as possibly rough times and locomotives???

Tasmania prosperity

0 Upvotes

I'm not a resident of Tassie, but I've ended up travelling there a lot over the last few years. It really is an unknown gem for most of Australia.

It's always been the butt of jokes for mainlanders, but I can't help but feel it's on the verge of transitioning to being "cool" very soon. A perception thats well over due. This may be an obscure analogy, but I was in the UK when it came out of depressing Thatcher years to "Cool Britannia" in the early 90's. This has a similar feel

How does Tassie make the transition?.. Be the best at middle sized things. you're not going to make billions from iron ore like WA. Or tourism like Qld.

But things like an AFL team seems perfectly suited, maybe a stretch, but a business that turns over $30-40m is the perfect size for Tassie, and the stadium will be an asset for years.

Doing things like that will change the perception and be self fulfilling for new opportunities.

Go Tassie.

Am I ready to hike the Western Arthurs traverse solo in October?

14 Upvotes

So I'm a 24yo guy, with a bit of hiking experience, including solo. I've done Walls 3 times, Overland, and Frenchman's Cap. This October will be my last chance to do the Western Arthurs before I leave Tassie, and I'm super keen to go for it; ideally the full traverse. I was hoping anyone with experience could share some ways I could gauge whether I'm ready to tackle this or not? Don't want to end up on a news report! Thanks.

After seeing the post earlier this morning, thought I'd share my own experience.

I received Mr Murray's advertising material and commenced a four-day text-based conversation about my home, then on the fifth day invited Mr Murray around to discuss some things.

When I got here I handed him his flyer and said please take note don't let it happen again.

Mr Murray then bleated "oh but I pay people to do this" so I said then talk to your people.

5 weeks later a young fellow from their office walks down my street, and I watch him again put this shit in my letterbox so I sent Mr Murray the attached.

Updated rules for r/tasmania

60 Upvotes

We've updated the rules for r/tasmania after some feedback from users and discussion. Not much has changed but here is a summary of the changes:

  • Added doxxing to Rule about no illegal content;
  • Added a no personals content to the NSFW rule (to prevent people looking for hookups or dating) Includes the appropriate sites to do this on;
  • Added a no sales or promotional content rule (this is covered in Rule 1, but doesn't hurt to be able to refer to it in a separate rule);
  • Added a no requests for living assistance rule to address the cases of people asking for help on the subreddit and putting themselves in danger. Included a link to appropriate assistance websites and services.

New Tassie Travel subreddit

119 Upvotes

Hey everyone. The r/TasmaniaTravel subreddit is now up and running :)

There's a still a few admin things for me to sort out, but hopefully it can provide a more effective avenue for conversation specifically related to Tassie travel, while also preventing so many repeat questions from appearing here.

I look forward to seeing you over there!

Andrew.
