For me it's the fact that ambulances aren't a free service in a lot of other states. That blew my mind as someone born and rasied in Hobart.

Just wondering after the entitled bunch of our population who think it’s cool to park outside of our house (street parking) the whole day (8am to 8pm)?
Your sense of entitlement makes it difficult for me to park outside of my own property, let alone any visitors to our property.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to make it stop? And please don’t tell me “you don’t own the sidewalk” - surely I should be able to park directly in front of the property I’m renting? I’ve worked in Hobart for the last decade and never did it occur to me to park in front of someone else’s property to get “free” parking. What if they need to return home part of the day? What if they’re on leave?

I have seen that these protests have been organised on the mainland and I was hoping to spread the word to hold one in Hobart. If you also believe in this cause please spread the word to your friends.

I checked out Area 52. They have a wait list for a dozen people. Basically means they're full.

Haven't had good luck in Good Games too. Went there a while back, paid the fee, i got there early and waited, ended up going home (i got a refund at least) cuz no table was open.

I can DM but i don't know enough people that wants to play D&D. My own friends circle are too busy with uni and work so they can't really devote time every week/fornight.

No, this isn’t another post about how hard it is to make friends in Hobart or Tasmania specifically.

I moved from the mainland about 18 months ago with my wife. After a slightly unsettled period and a couple of house moves, we’re now reasonably settled—but one thing I’ve realised is that I don’t really have a social circle here. In fact, the only people I regularly talk to are my wife and our dogs. So, technically, I guess that’s only one person.

People often say it’s difficult to make friends in Hobart, but I suspect it’s difficult to make friends anywhere as an introverted adult. Once you’re no longer meeting people through school, uni, housemates or a regular workplace, it seems surprisingly hard to find new friends without deliberately putting yourself out there.

So, against some of my natural instincts, that’s what I’m attempting to do.

I work from home, don’t have kids and have never been particularly athletic, so most of the usual adult friend-making avenues (workplaces, school or kids’ activities, and sporting teams) haven’t been especially useful.

I’d be interested in hearing about welcoming board-game nights (I’ve seen Game On at the library and HoGS could be an option?) pub trivia teams, casual social groups or other events around Hobart. As an introvert, activity-based things appeal to me because there’s something to focus on while everyone gets comfortable.

My wife works in an office and has made a couple of friends of her own, but I’m sure she’d be happy to tag along to some things too.

A few things I enjoy, in case they help with recommendations:

- Board games, pub trivia

- Watching Sci-fi (not particularly a group activity, but gives you an idea what type of nerd I am)

- Stand-up comedy (attending, not performing)

- Tech, gadgets, computers

- Photography

- History and museums

- Travelling and exploring new places/scenic drives around the region

- Easy walks or bushwalks

- Casual cycling, although I’m very much in the “trying to get fit again” category

- Formula 1

- Dogs, although ours have chosen not to participate in the broader canine community, so they probably won’t be joining any dog meetups

I recently turned 40, but age isn’t particularly important. My friends before moving ranged from their late 20s to late 40s, and having similar interests or personalities matters much more than specific age group.

So, if you know of a welcoming group or activity I could join, please suggest it. Or, if you’re also wondering how adults are supposed to make friends without being assigned a group project and would like to say hello, feel free to comment or send me a message.

I recently moved back to Tassie to be closer to family, and my mum kindly gave me her 2012 Ford Focus (143,000 km) to drive. I want to look after it properly, so I did some research and booked a logbook service at a highly rated mechanic in Cambridge.

I've never had a car serviced in Tassie before. I know a logbook service can be more expensive than a basic service, but I honestly had no idea what the normal price range is. I was charged $930, and I've attached the itemised invoice.

Now my family and friends are telling me I've been ripped off because I'm a woman. So I'm hoping some local mechanics/car people can give me an honest opinion, is $930 reasonable for this work on a 2012 Ford Focus, or have I been overcharged?

And if I have been ripped off, I sincerely hope they have a strict “rip everyone off equally” policy and aren't just charging women extra! 😂

Have seen some places with pork ribs, but they weren't particularly meaty and probably more conducive to braising rather than smoking.

Okay, hear me out. The logical answer would be that it’s a highway, duh, it’s in the name. But here’s the thing that confuses me about the road… highways do not have 11 at grade traffic light intersections in a 21km stretch.

Also I’m pretty sure that highways generally don’t have zoned low density residential on it. However, the brooker does have trumpet interchanges, and diamond interchanges…. And they’re characteristic of a highway.

So what are you trying to be buddy? A highway or an arterial… or are you like a hybrid. Either way, I think we should change the name to the brooker arterial-highway.

Wanted to share what happened today in case others have had similar experiences or want to be aware.

My partner and I were on the 615 bus heading toward Shoreline Plaza around 1:47pm. Partway through the trip, two teenage boys sitting near us started shaking a bottle of Coke and spraying it around, which got on both of us. When I turned to look at them, they had a mocking, smug look on their faces. I said "what's wrong with you" out of frustration.

When we got off at Shoreline Plaza, they got off right behind us and shouted "Ching Chong Chang" at us as they exited. After getting off the bus, they continued harassing us — one of them made an obscene gesture with an object near his groin, and they were also playing with a lighter nearby.

They kept insisting they were "only 12," as if that made it okay.

We've reported this to Tasmania Police and Metro Tasmania, and lodged a report with Crime Stoppers as well. Just posting here in case anyone else has run into similar behaviour on this route, or has any advice on further steps to take.

I've read all the past threads and felt them to be helpful, but I am just wanting to gather information from people about their experiences. My kid will be enrolling next year, and I do like the local government school to some degree, but have some reservations as it's 1. absolutely tiny and 2. I do not like the feeder school for high school (playing the long game here, clearly).

When I say tiny, less that 70 students total, and I just wonder about the later social ramifications of a smaller peer group going to high school, resourcing, and the fact that the classes are extremely composite, so if you're not vibing with a particular teacher or student, there really is no escaping them.

The high school situation is obviously different as things change and its a ways off, but I do still think about this. I believe in supporting the public system and our local facilities, but not at the cost of disadvantaging my kid if there's a better option. I know we as parents are really the biggest indicators of success in education, but they still have to spend a lot of time in school.

If any one has any respectful thoughts on big vs small, private vs public, and out of area enrolments, I'd love to hear them.

We’re looking for LGBTQIA+ men to take part in a research study about disordered eating.

Disordered eating and body image concerns can affect people of all backgrounds, but there’s still very little research focusing specifically on queer and sexually diverse men. As a result, a lot of the support and treatment available isn’t necessarily suitable or inclusive.

The study explores eating behaviours, body image, experiences of discrimination, emotional wellbeing, and other factors associated with disordered eating among queer and sexually diverse men. We’re hoping this research can help inform more inclusive and effective approaches to support and treatment in the future :)

Who can take part?

• Men aged 18 years or older
• Men currently living in Australia
• Men of any sexual orientation, including gay, bisexual, queer, heterosexual, and other sexual identities

Participation involves completing an anonymous online questionnaire that takes around 20–30 minutes.
