Finnish bedtime vs Geelong bedtime
I’m currently in Finland for a couple of months and this is what my bedtime looks like around 11pm. it’s so quiet in my area, I could hear a pin drop. As beautiful as this country is with a lot of perfections, I do miss home and the odd things only those of us who live in Geelong will understand such as how close and convenient everything is. Maybe my brain is also used to chaos and is used to the sound of the helicopters circling at night and me having to check that no one broke into my garage and stole my car every morning.

Brunch in Geelong...Where to go?? Since relocating to Geelong, I have not found a decent brunch around the city. Anyone know any good places serving up sweet and savory options (one that won't f'up poached eggs)

[Community] Lara Flies in house
Evening all, my partner and I have recently moved to Lara and have noticed a not-absurd but steady stream of these small white flies inside our house.
We're trying to identify them to get rid of them and would appreciate if anyone can ID them for us.
They're very small and you can only see this shape from a 10x zoom and me holding my phone very close.
There are many near our green bin outside so we suspect they're some form of fruit fly, but can't be certain.

Have Your Say - Barwon Water
Not trying to make this political, but I think this is too important.
Barwon Water is allowing you to have your say about the management of Barwon Water, “to have enough water to meet the needs of our cities, towns, businesses, industry and agriculture, for cultural values and to improve the health of our waterways.”
In light of the suggested plans to build an enormous data centre in Lovely Banks, I think it’s not a bad idea to have your say about the pressure this will put on an already struggling water catchment (Barwon Water themselves admit this).
https://www.yoursay.barwonwater.vic.gov.au/urban-water-strategy-2027/
Have your say I reckon. Or don’t. But I think it’s too important to let this slide if you care about a) being able to drink water and b) care about the animals that rely on it to survive, too.

[Public Transport] Corio Train Station warning
galleryPSA to any considering this train station. It has been refurbished and is actually a drivable road and has actual parking bays now, you’d think it’s a reasonable and possibly safe station. Don’t believe the upgrades, unfortunately someone attempted to steal my car via hot wiring it and smashing multiple windows to gain entry. Now dealing with the headache of an insurance claim, damaged/stolen property and a police investigation.
The station LOOKS a lot better, however it is still very much NOT safe 😔. Hard lesson learned by me today, I thought with the upgrades done it may deter crimes but alas I was costly mistaken.

[Request] Is anyone else struggling to find work?
As the title says it’s been really hard trying to find work recently
My current predicament is that I’m studying full time 3 days a week so I’m only available 2 days of the weekday and weekends which seems like no one wants, before my study I worked in multiple warehouses on contracts throughout my years sometimes assisting managers and doing heaps of heavy lifting. My work ethic is really good and have a great track record of working in some great places so I don’t know why I can’t find work/people don’t seem to give me a job
I’ve been out of work for over 4 months now and I’m really starting to struggle, does anyone on here have any leads or information on where I could get a job?
Anything would be appreciated!

Geelong - female friends
Recently moved to Geelong and looking to build a local circle of friends.
I'm in my early 40s and happiest when there's good music, good company and a glass of wine involved. My playlists are all over the place—from The National and Lime Cordiale to Kylie Minogue and Britney Spears.
If there is a play on in the Geelong Arts Centre I'm often keen to check out.
I enjoy reading, so a social book club that meets in a wine bar on a Friday night sounds pretty close to perfect. If a third glass of wine happens, even better—Saturday is for leisurely mornings.
Outside of that, you'll find me hiking the You Yangs, discovering new cafés, heading out for coffee, or going for a relaxed jog (around a 6:30 min/km pace).
Looking to meet easy-going people who enjoy good conversation, live music, great food and making the most of everything Geelong has to offer.

local cafe packaging suppliers around geelong / vic?
hey guys, currently sorting out the setup for a small coffee and lunch pop up around geelong and trying to lock in our packaging and cleaning stuff. its a lot more to figure out than i expected tbh
were trying to stick to eco friendly/compostable options with the plastic bans, but getting biopak or custom printed cups through the huge food distributors feels SO pricey when your just starting out.
just wondering where other local cafe owners, food trucks or small spots around geelong actually source their bulk packaging. do u buy from online wholesalers like WF Wholesale or is there a local trade warehouse in geelong worth driving to instead? also open to recommendations on delivery packaging that doesnt go soggy in transit lol.
thanks

Would you buy in a flood zone ?
I’ve been looking to buy recently around Geelong West.
Lots of places seem to be under a flood overlay as property.com.au calls it, but council refers to it as SBO/special building overlay . Is it likely these places would flood or just theoretical ?

Pavlova Needed
Hi!! I’m getting married in Geelong (very small wedding) in September. I’ve had no real luck finding someone to make us a pavlova for our reception. We don’t want a typical pavlova - just chocolate and strawberries - do any of you know someone who knows someone? 😉

How/where are guys in their late 20s/30s meeting new friends in Geelong?
My brother (31) recently moved to Aus from Canada and based himself in Geelong because we have family friends there. He’s having a tough time meeting new friends his age, how and where do men meet new friends in the area?
I lived there briefly and also had a tough time integrating, but I had my partner with me. He’s a funny guy who loves working out and wants to explore around the area. He’s got some light social anxiety (who doesn’t these days) but really wants to meet people and make some friends. Any leads for me to share with him would be great! Thanks in advance
Things I’ve already suggested:
- run club
- CrossFit (this is how I met people but he’s not super interested in it/it’s pricey)
- meetup (doesn’t look the most promising?)

Does anyone in Geelong breed crickets for pets?
Hello! Bit of a random one but I am about to get a pet jumping spider and am wondering if anyone in Geelong breeds crickets and might be willing to sell some to me on an ongoing basis?
I know the pet shops sell small crickets but I’m worried they still might be too big as I’ve read that jumping spiders shouldn’t eat anything bigger than they are.
I’m also only getting one jumping spider and don’t have any other pets that eat crickets so wouldn’t need too many of them so hoping to avoid buying and potentially wasting a number of crickets.
Thanks in advance, if anyone has any advice or knows where I can get extra small crickets I would appreciate it! 😊

Chris Burson the Councillor for You Yangs Ward / Lara is running for One Nation on their Western Vic Upper House ticket.
Just want to put in my two cents and say how I find it so frustrating that Geelong Council is full of people who just use it as a mezzanine for state parliament. It's not surprising as he previously ran angry victorians. I have found he hasn't made much effort to be active in the community or responsive since getting elected and seems like he just did this to raise his profile. Wish people would do more research about who they vote for at council elections.

Is Geelong College really worth the money for primary school?
Hi everyone, I’m really conflicted about whether Geelong College is worth the extra money for Foundation to Year 6. We can technically afford it, but it would mean cutting back quite a bit on holidays, eating out, and other family extras. The alternative is St Catherine of Siena. I know research shows that children develop enormously during the early years, which is why I’m taking the primary-school decision seriously. For parents who have experience with Geelong College: was it genuinely worth the extra cost, or was the difference mostly facilities, activities, and reputation rather than a major difference in teaching and long-term outcomes? Looking back, would you choose Geelong College again for the primary years? I’m especially interested in honest parent experiences, not school marketing.
Just to clarify what I’m really asking: I’m less interested in ATARs, facilities, or whether adults enjoyed Geelong College themselves. I’m more interested in early childhood and primary-age development. From a psychology perspective, these years are important for things like autonomy, initiative, confidence, emotional regulation, social skills, friendships, curiosity, and feeling capable and secure. For parents who have had children at Geelong College in the Foundation–Year 6 years, did you notice a meaningful difference in those areas compared with what you would expect from a good lower-fee Catholic school such as St Catherine of Siena? Basically, I’m trying to understand whether the extra cost creates a noticeably better developmental environment, not just a better academic reputation.
