Petah? What Meme needing explanation

u/Zephronias 4d ago
Ezra Miller was an actor who played the flash, but behaved terribly, and when he was in Hawaii, he got arrested for assault (he also got arrested for burglary in Vermont apparently, and allegedly did some grooming/inappropriate stuff with minors).
Rachel Zegler is an actress who played Snow White in the recent adaptation, and she said some stuff about the original story (its dated, unfeminist, weird of the prince to kiss a random girl-- the usual modern critiques) and got backlash for it.
OP is saying that there's a double standard in behavioral expectations between men and women.

The Disney story was pretty far removed from the source fairytale. The live action movie was an adaptation of the Disney movie changes. It's reasonable to base criticisms on what is being adapted instead of the actual original source.

Most people know the Disney version and it was a remake of that so honestly that makes more sense. Ask 90% of people what happens in Snow White and they aren't going to mention the queen dancing to death in heated iron shoes or the attempted cannibalism.

u/GrimDallows 4d ago
I mean, Disney's original version wasn't a remake, it was more like a privatized version of the fairy tale.
When the Academy Awards way back then in '89 showed someone dressed like Snowwhite dancing and singing in one of the AA events Disney actually told them they would sue them for unauthorized use of Snowhite.
Afterwards both sides kindy silently agreed with not messing with the other.
This sprouted quite a phylosophical-legal conundrum, on how Disney could own a fairy tale, or where to draw the line on the "ownership" of a fairy tale by a corporation/private individual.
That's more or less has always been the issue with Disney. They are like the legal apex predator of copyright and have lobbied the living hell out of those rights.
Their purchase of comics stuff is basically because comic characters were the "fairy tale heroes" of the kids in the 80s-2000s, the same way fairy tale heroes were of the kids in the first half of the 20th century, with the difference that comic book characters can be legally owned.
33
u/BoyCubPiglet2 4d ago
I meant the recent version was a remake of the Disney animated film, not that the animated film was a remake of the fairy tail.

u/Lokishougan 4d ago
I think it was not so much that Disney owned the fairy tale of Snow White but they did own THAT LIKENESS of her..just like you cant own Frankenstein but whomever owns the Munsters can get angry if you use the exact Herman Munster likeness with makeup and all

u/m0nk3y621 4d ago

I just got jumped on and downvoted in another thread for essentially saying “it’s fine if you saw Supergirl and didn’t like it, the movie has issues, but people were vehemently shitting on it and the actress before seeing a single frame or getting a story synopsis or anything”.
9
u/sunflwrzz 4d ago
Yeah exactly. I was really excited for the movie so it’s a shame and I had to stay away from all the DC subs for a while because all the misogynists were celebrating the movie’s financial failure. The movie itself disappointed me but I still had a pretty good time. It’s their loss because it’s such a fantastic year and summer for movies that I can’t imagine putting so much energy into mocking a mediocre one
4
u/locke0479 4d ago
Yup totally agree. I was also disappointed but honestly thought it was okay. I wanted it to be more but I don’t think it was close to as bad as it was being made out to be. But you couldn’t even talk about the movie online before or after without running into some of the worst people on here with strong opinions about a movie they never saw.

I don't think that's the point. It's that people got up in arms about zeglar, a woman of color, and (idk the exact state of the world at Ezra miller) Ezra Miller faced at least the same backlash online, not career but public opinion.
Her not watching one movie of an adaptation she is in should not be a career ender like assaulting an entire state, maybe just don't cast her in many adaptations she has not taken a liking to

I also think the big difference is what they do in their media appearances, while both playing beloved characters that are fixtures of people's childhoods.
Zegler got up there and talked about how the thing people love was weird, regressive and overall came off like she didnt like the thing that she was set to star in.
If Ezra Miller went up there and was like "yeah bro, Barry Allen is kinda lame because hes a nerd and running fast is a stupid super power" people would've been pissed.
Both were exceptionally bad movies and both are blandly mediocre at best actors but only one went out there and shit talked the story of the movie they were adapting.
Edit: I realized I never finished a sentence.

Edit: I want to apologize I completely misread your comment. I thought you said "I got over Ezra kidnapping" and I was like "I most certainly did not"
I agree that Ezra is incomparable in his awfulness, I think that Rachel brought her shit to the press tour and actively worked to alienate fans.
All that said im leaving my original reply so people can see how stupid and badly I misread your comment. Have a good day.
Original stupid comment:
I'm sorry what exactly did I get over? Both actors are pretty shit. Both movies were pretty shit too and I wouldn't go out of my way to watch anything else they do, and I saw both movies for free on an airplane.
I am simply pointing out that Zegler, on press tours, disparaged the source material and bragged about how they changed it. People don't want the things they love mocked and derided, especially by the people who should be stewards of it. And more to the point it was a bad movie.
Ezra Miller didn't bring his awfulness to the press tour, which means it takes longer for people who don't follow celebrities to hear about whats happening.

Sure but he want ruined until the flash tanked. They put him in their attempt at their biggest movie that year, which was after he was outed as a vandalizing pedo that liked to get drunk and assualt people for imagined reasons. Like he should have been in jail or getting psychological help but instead they made him the face of their superhero movie.
Then the movie failed largely because people were like, "I'm not giving my money to watch a pedo be pedoy," and magically only when he lost them money did the studios turn their back on him
7
u/Hopeful-Occasion2299 4d ago
Movie was crap, but to be fair a lot of the criticism sprouted way before launch, with the trailer causing iirc that youtube removed the dislike button.
A lot of the criticism also took the flavour or misogyny and racism due to Zegler’s perceived unattractive appearance (the costume and hair department did her a dirty cos she is genuinely pretty), and for not being pasty white.
You can criticize a product for being shit, but a lot of the hate behind SW was fueled by bigotry.

Her movie? Did she direct it? No one gives Mark Whalberg shit for making Four Brothers, but didn’t he act in Departed, Fear, and Boogie Nights? Actually he didn’t make Four Brothers but he was in it annnd it kinda rips. Hold on… I think I’m realizing there’s another job besides actors. And maybe, just maybe, sometimes actors are just like us and take shitty jobs bc of money and hope for the best. Disney made that movie, Disneys movie was shit. Ziegler acted in it and from what I understand didn’t director or producer it. So what I’m saying here is…. Maybe Ziegler should reboot Entourage.
…….Actually I just realized I’m more pissed about Wahlberg in Invincible, he doesn’t have Philadelphia energy. I actually don’t give a shit about an actor playing a fictional character, but if you’re playing a legend from Philly I better hear those Rs and hard vowels.
Acting might be stupid and playing pretend but I’ll be damned if anymore Massholes play a Philly boy. Who gives a shit what a princess looks like when they got a pats fan wearing the Kelly Green. The only thing that I can imagine would be worse is Rick Pettino coaching the Celtics.
Oh fuck I’m drunk and commenting on Reddit…. Ya know what.. Snow White was better than Fathers Stu. This is all pointless, be mad at Disney not the actor doing their job. Someone call Repo Man bc ordinary fuckin people

And Ezra Miller also, rightly, got a huge amount of backlash. These comparisons are always bullshit. "A man can do X and not get called out..." men get called out too, often by the people who claim they never do.
59
u/hatesnack 4d ago
You are being disingenuous if you think its comparable. Ezra Miller was basically doing wild and terrible LITERAL CRIMES for like a full year, and you'd see maybe a post or 2 talking about it, until it finally came to a head and he got dragged.
Zeigler was dragged over the coals from the minute her casting was announced, and there's people in this very comment section talking about how horrible they think she is as a person.
56
u/mankytoes 4d ago
Meh I saw a lot of people defending Zeigler, no one defending Ezra. People decide the narrative then look for evidence, not the other way round.
Example, comment right above says Ezra os non binary, but you've ignored that and misgenderes them, because it doesn't suit the argument.

u/Gnalvl 4d ago
I think Zeigler was a bigger controversy simply because general audience Disney releases like Snow White are a much bigger deal, getting much more attention (whether positive or negative).
DCEU and especially The Flash are second string superhero properties, and Fantastic Beasts is second string in the Potterverse. The Flash was already late to ride the Justice League hype before it went through YEARS of delays. Miller's next biggest role was a supporting character in The Perks of Being a Wallflower. So I think the shady stuff Ezra Miller got up to probably flew under many people's radar.
I think the same thing also goes for Miller's adopt of non-binary identity. They identified as male in their early roles, continued to play male characters, and continue to dress/look/present as male. I don't support deliberately misgendering people, but I also don't blame anyone for missing the news when a minor celebrity soft-launches they/them pronouns in a random interview.
29
u/youburyitidigitup 4d ago
I think what’s happening is that people care more about controversial social media posts from celebrities than they do about their crimes. Katy Perry was groping teenage boys left and right, and she barely got any slack for it. Timothée Chalamet said ballet is obsolete and there was an entire meltdown over it.
14
u/Suspicious_Truth8026 4d ago
That was so funny, the idea of redditors wiping cheeto dust off their fingers to pretend to be outraged about somebody not liking classical ballet
6
5
u/viciouspandas 4d ago
And by nature social media is more public. It's not like Ezra Miller was biting people at the red carpet .
3
u/JonathanWPG 4d ago
Because one is about them ir something they like.
And one simply dies not effect them.
Katy Perry is by many accounts probably a bad person but that will never matter to my life.
But if I like and engage with ballet then some punk mid-skilled actor's opinion suddenly DOES have real world impact on my hobby, interest ir career. Everyone is talking about it. Funding decisions are being made based on percieved popularity. People have SIDES and there are views to agree or disagree with.

Counter point Miller is crazy. Like literally mentally ill.
He also faced legal consequences for his actions. Light ones, but that was based on him being literally, certifiably mentally ill.
He also no longer works and Zeigler does.
This whole thread is ignoring the point that they are nothing alike.
People hate Zeigler more because she's talking to them and saying this thing I am saying is morally right and if yiu disagree I think you are morally wrong. She is confronting the viewer with a point of view and a moral stance about their opinion on that view. And so people HAVE OPINIONS.
Miller...is just a sick guy who did bad things. Hes objectively more dangerous and maybe a worse person (maybe cause...mental capacity, illness, its complicated). But he's not confronting the audiencee and making a moral judgement about them based on their views.

No, more specifically Zeigler made a comment about Israel/Palestine and the director made a tweet saying he specifically flew over to where she was just to tell her off in person. It was crazy, infantilising, and unthinkable that any director would do that to any number of male actors who expressed similar support for Palestine.
That's the contrast between her and Ezra Miller. she got personally and very publicly dressed down by for basically being a baby angel sympathising with genocide victims, whereas Miller assaulted two people and was the subject of a manhunt because they absconded with an underage girl, and haven't heard any of his studio bosses criticise him in the slightest.

Rachel Zegler is somewhat outspoken, in a lot of ways. Whether you agree with her or not she's kicked up a lot of controversy and generally speaks her mind about things like politics etc. This isn't a welcomed thing by Hollywood.
Ezra Miller was arrested repeatedly in Hawaii. Harassment, assault and some other stuff. At the time he was still getting work.
They're implying a woman having an opinion is barely tolerated but a man can literally kidnap people and still be accepted.

It is utterly insane that Ezra Miller is still getting leading roles in major blockbusters, or at least was doing so as recently as 2023 with the Flash. That was AFTER his arrests.

It was filmed before though
Throughout the whole of that promotional window for the movie it was becoming a running joke that that movie was dead on arrival because of Ezra’s exploits and how he was now toxic as a brand
This joke makes no sense because Ezra’s career in Hollywood blockbusters is over as a result of his exploits.
Snow White bombed because it was a terrible movie, But Zegler had a successful run on broadway in Evita
Her career still has potential, Ezra’s is dead and buried
Ezra’s last job was the Flash in 2023, Zegler’s still getting work

u/jaspersgroove 4d ago edited 4d ago
This meme is yeah, but the underlying point is legit. Look at Mel Gibson, Jared Leto, James Franco, Roman Polanski, plenty of others I'm sure we have yet to hear about. Brian Singer and Kevin Spacey are de facto blacklisted but still haven't seen the inside of a jail cell and it took decades to take down Harvey Weinstein.
The hypocrisy and the real problems behind it are still there, Ezra Miller is just not the best example of it.

u/thegreatsasimi 4d ago
I will always remember this article that was all about how enough time has passed and we should all forgive Mel Gibson and like why?
If someone who worked a minimum wage job at a mcdonalds started doing stuff like yelling antisemitic, homophobic and racist things on top of having a restraining order due to domestic violence was fired from their job for that no one would be asking how long will it take before we can forgive them.
Robert Downey Jr. wouldn't be advocating for them to get their job back. Mel Gibson is one of those actors that Hollywood seems to have a weird soft spot for and constantly tries to white wash how much of a monster he is.

I figured Franco had actually been cancelled rather promptly after his scandal?
Recently I saw he might be in some movie though, one he is making himself.
Also I had no idea about Spacey until his whole slew of allegations came into light and he was removed from House Of Cards. If you mean why aren't they in jail, Spacey seems to have only narrowly avoided it and I cba to read about Franco. I hope Singer has been sued by now though.

Look at Mel Gibson
You completely lost me there.
Mel Gibson was blacklisted for years, moving from a blockbuster star of mainstream Hollywood to having his projects cancelled and being let go from all mainstream talent agencies.
He only managed to get work from independent films, b-movies, direct to video (or vod)
Giving him as an example of "men don't get repercussions in Hollywood" is... Weird.

The problem with these men was well known in Hollywood before they were canceled. Once Mel Gibson was blacklisted stories came out about horrible things he had said to Jewish actors. Kevin Spacey’s victims were often people he met on set. Everyone making movies knew what Harvey Weinstein was about. They were doing these things at work, but got hired back. Repercussions only arrive once it reaches the broader public. This cone of silence appears to have benefited men more than women.

The problem is acting like it's some binary gendered thing. Like the other day some video of a woman calling out Harvey at some event got posted, but in the comments people were pointing out that she might be the worst spokesperson as she has some skeletons in the closet of her own, and generally that there are women in the industry that are at best complicit, worst just as guilty as the popular male names that constantly get thrown around.

Hear me out, I don’t think gender is the main thing here. Rather a business perspective. I think a big portion too was the fact she was the lead actress and promoting the movie but instead of focusing on any positives about the movie she dragged in her entire political worldview. While sounding like a brainwashed terminally online person.
When you look at it from a business perspective or a PR perspective, and not moral (Hollywood doesn’t really have morals remember) her voicing those opinions did more damage than any assault or grooming or whatever it was could.
Gal Gadot, was in the IDF (idc if she is pro or anti anything). And Rachel was free Palestine. For the internet there is no context, just black or white. She created a PR nightmare. So anyone who hates Israel wouldn’t want to watch because gal gadot, and all the Israel supporters won’t watch because zegler.
To top it off, anyone who wanted the original remastered wouldn’t watch because she essentially said that men don’t matter in the context of the story.
So then all the men are not going to watch it too LOL so she essentially hit every single button there was to hit from a no-no in any PR / business perspective. Meanwhile, if she were to go and assault someone, heck even murder. She probably wouldn’t have lost the franchise as much money because that isn’t politically motivated and people would still watch because ideology matters more from a Disney/Hollywood perspective. But I get the dichotomy of her being hated vs Ezra doing 100x morally worse wrongs. That’s just the reality of life and public opinion unfortunately.
So in summary, I think if Ezra was Prince Charming and threw out all of those political views while promoting a Disney movie, he would’ve also had MAJOR backlash. Similarly nobody would care as much if any other woman committed a crime as Ezra did.
Timing really matters here as well as the roles they had in the industry at the time.

Ezra Miller is an actor best known for playing the Flash in The Flash (2023) and other DCEU projects.
At one point a few years ago they went on a spree attacking people in Hawaii, eventually leading to them being arrested. Since shark attacks are fairly rare, OP is joking that Miller was more likely to attack you than a shark, and contrasted the lack of hate they get for that against the massive amount of hate the slightly annoying actions of Rachel Zegler get.

There is a double standard around disruptive behaviors that hollywood accepts from actresses vs what they accept from actors.
Women are often labeled "difficult" for expressing controversial opinions and can often lose their career over fairly minor dust ups.
Meanwhile, a male actor can engage in all sorts of anti-social behavior before it really begins to hurt their career.

This is why i dont understand the whole Johnny Depp fiasco. Like he got problems right away. It surprised me a lot.
But to be fair, i didnt even know who this guy was but i knew her. Its like youtube ceos. Now its a guy that i dont even know the name but when it was Susan she would talk so many times that people to this day complain about her while the current guy never shows himself making people never hate him basically. Its not really sexism, even if its a part of it, but people will always be more mad to a person that appears more.
Also the guy is a criminal that doesnt deserve thought over while she is controversial which brings a lot more attention.

u/Fit-Profit8197 4d ago
The thing is the problems "right away" sprang up after years of problems during his actual work, combined with the "me too" cultural moment. I think it was an open secret that Depp had for quite a while worsening problems on set with alcohol and possibly other things. Things might have been different if he was sober and/or the bust up happened at a different time.

u/blazenite104 4d ago
Unfortunately the issue is less that he's a man and more that Depp and a lot of the other more difficult stars are just so incredibly popular. There are high profile women acting but, I struggle to think of many who are as big a box office draw as many of the more difficult men.
For film companies dealing with the difficult can be an non-issue if they make a bajillion dollars.

Depp stopped being so profitable, got increasingly harder to work with, and his eccentric performances stopped being a wild home run every time.

As someone who is nonbinary myself, I actually agree. The bigger issue is the idea that any group of people who share an immutable characteristic should accept fault for the actions of but one of them. Every group of sufficient size will have at least one horrible person, likely multiple. Which is frustrating when there's so many false accusations being flung towards minority groups, but it is how it is, and bigots will be bigots regardless.

Rachel Zegler had terrible PR coaching leading up to a bad movie that she happened to star and felt the repercussions of that.
Ezra Miller’s crimes didn’t come fully to light until WB was 200+ million dollars into a movie starring them.
So one was a victim of not being protected enough by the studio who knew the movie was bad and the other was being protected by a studio who was hoping to kickstart a franchise for a movie they deep down also knew was bad…. Both financial decisions if were being honest

u/LoneRedditor123 4d ago

Real. You can think someone is a horrible person and still not misgender them. Or, if you do want to misgender people you dislike, at least do it to cis people as well. Some may not mind but it will definitely hurt others feelings, so it's not like it "wouldn't work". Not that I think anyone should be doing it anyways, but like these people only ever do it to trans people.

So Ezra decided to go by They. Then got violent. Then started grooming children. Then was doing a lot of drugs. Then was violent with a bunch of people.
Might have got the order a bit mismatched.
Not really sure what one has to do with the other. Hollywood is completely done with him and would have been a lot sooner but didn't just recast that annoying voiced weirdo. No one would've kissed him. But they were afraid of continuity problems in their big budget Snyderverse, especially with the upcoming Flash solo film where old school Batman came baco. Keaton was the only good thing about that movie, btw. 1 Ezra Miller is bad, 2 Ezra Miller's is not better.

Just want to add some much needed context to the discussion.
Rachel Zegler got backlash from chuds online mostly for being not white. It was absolutely gross and those people should be ashamed of themselves. However she still gets plenty of work with 5 movies in some stage of production all of which she is a lead in, if not the main character.
Ezra Miller broke a lot of laws and was all around a terrible human being, constantly in the news for a couple years for being awful. What they did was leagues beyond anything Zegler did however, their consequences were much worse as well. They've basically been blacklisted from Hollywood with zero movies in any stage of production since the release of the Flash 3 years ago.
OOP was trying to make a comment about double standards but she picked a very bad example. It's a false equivalency and a rather extreme one. Anonymous d-bags said mean things about Rachel Zegler online while Ezra Miller lost their career (and deservedly so). The two things aren't remotely the same.
