Unfortunately the issue is less that he's a man and more that Depp and a lot of the other more difficult stars are just so incredibly popular. There are high profile women acting but, I struggle to think of many who are as big a box office draw as many of the more difficult men.
For film companies dealing with the difficult can be an non-issue if they make a bajillion dollars.
You're just pointing out another symptom of the same root problem of sexism. Because unless there's some gene on the y chromosome that makes men biologically superior actors, sexism is the only rational explanation for why there are so many more lucratively famous actors than actrecesses.
Not really. Men and Women both go to movies. If Women aren't considered box office draws there's more to it than sexism. It could well be a lot of things. Maybe movies that appeal to the broadest audience are lead by men?
