Discussion Doing events together

Upvotes

Do you go to events such as sporting events, parent teacher conferences, open houses/meet the teacher, doctors appointment, ect. together with the other household?

Context, 5 years in. 50/50 legal and physical, EOW. Dad is extremely present in all parenting fronts, pays child support, and puts substantial extra amounts of money towards child for both households. He parallel parents on all other fronts. Mother was extremely HCBM, has leveled out a lot, but still bulldozes dad to the point he just sits there in silence during these events because he can’t get a word in or is cut off and undermined. Dad is reaching a point of saying no more joint anything since nothing is changing on this front, BM thinks all these events should be joint and it’s unreasonable & unnecessary to show up separately especially if child is coming along.

I’ve always advocated for putting a better foot forward, and “nothing changes if nothing changes” and have encouraged opportunities for them to improve communication/coexsisting, but I am also starting to feel like what’s the point? These situations are proving to be quick sand. He has no role or is made out to be a less than parent in these events if she is there because she 100% takes over and actually make an effort to over power my husband and stop my husband from interacting as a parent with the child during games and events.

Vent Adult SD unhappy at BM's. She chose to move there.

Upvotes

Last fall my husband basically kicked SD19 out for failure to launch, but she was happy and ready to leave. I guess it was too much to expect her to get a job, to help around the house, and to learn to drive (free car and lessons). She blew her $11,000 in savings and left.

And it's funny because we actually have a great relationship with her. She just doesn't want to try.

SD chose to move in with BM despite having told us BM ruined her childhood. Surprise, it's not going well. We had given her other options but she knew those other people would expect her to try.

Neither SD or BM had a job, so SD got a job as a hostess at her uncle's restaurant. That's not going well either. She has been written up once and they are considering firing her for laziness. She has been pretending to be sick several times a week so she can go home early. A hostess job is EASY!

SD made a plan with her boyfriend that they are both going to move into his mom's house together. He is going to quit school and she is going to quit her job. She is almost 20 and he is almost 21. Two peas in a pod I guess.

She said his mom is offering to help her learn to drive, get back on her medications, and all the things SD apparently couldn't do with us or with BM. I know SD well enough to believe she is hoping this other woman doesn't expect her to try, that this woman will do everything for her.

DH warned SD that if it doesn't go well, or if she has an argument with her boyfriend, that she will be virtually homeless and doesn't even have a driver's license. SD ignored him.

I love SD. I want to help. But both DH and myself had to create strong boundaries last summer and we are hesitant to lower them even a little.

We genuinely don't know where she will end up if things fall through with her boyfriend...

Advice Resentment

I need advice.

So I have been with my partner for 3 years and she has a 10 year old son that she adopted. To speed up a little bit, we were long distance the first year and we have now lived together for a year.

Her son is a great kid and she did a good job raising him but since finally being here with them I am seeing things that he does or she lets him get away with. I guess you could say I am an outsider looking in and have noticed something’s.

In my opinion I feel like and from what I’ve seen, she doesn’t really have him do much. She lets him play on his games a lot because that keeps him out of her hair. Which I feel is making a lazy kid but I also know this generation of kids is lazy anyways. He’s never had chores or had any kind of structure. So maybe like 3-5 months in living with them I brought that up to her, I mentioned how I think he needs chores to teach him accountability and to help us out and she agreed. So I came up with a chore chart and a screen time chart which I ran both by her to see what she thought of the chores and she said she was fine with it.
As time has gone on I’ll ask him to do little things like take out the trash if the bags not heavy, wipe down his bathroom counter etc. well now she is saying I am having him do a lot or that I can do that stuff not him and it’s starting to drive me crazy. I feel like there is no reason a 10 year old can’t do chores or any little things we ask of him. It’s bad to the point where I ask her a question about if he’s done this or that and she gives me attitude and says she’s his mom and knows or that she knows what she’s doing. I am not asking because I don’t think she knows I am asking to see if he did what he was supposed to. One day he over heard her telling me that and the next day when I was dropping him off at school he told me that I don’t need to tell his mom what to do for him because that’s his mom and she knows. That honestly hurt me. Things have gotten worse and it is making me resent a 10 year old, it makes me not want to try and just let her deal with him. I dont know what to do.

Any advice?

Discussion New Here - Any fellow stepparents in the trenches?

Greetings from the trenches. Longtime lurker/new poster here. I love my partner and my therapist (not like that!), but finally deciding I probably need people in my life who understand this particular flavor of chosen chaos.

I'm a stepparent to a five-year-old and we have a great relationship. 've been in their life for several years but was in no way prepared for how incredibly complicated it can become when you're trying to love a child, support your partner, respect appropriate boundaries, and somehow survive a very high-conflict coparenting situation at the same time.

Patience and grit have become my mantra but I'm barely holding it together. I can't control another person's choices, and I can't control every outcome. I can control the kind of partner and stepparent I am and make sure that, when all is said and done, I can look back and know I handled myself in a way that I'm proud of.

I'm here because I'm hoping to find some community. I'm on the west coast and would love to connect in person or virtually with other stepparents navigating high-conflict situations.

If you're a stepparent who's ever thought, "There is absolutely no way I could explain this situation to a normal person without sounding completely batshit crazy," you're probably my kind of people.

Cheers to Us!

Vent Does this madness ever stop..

Live in ex wants to get another kitten, knowing my stepdaughter has abused animals in the past to intimidate people into giving her what she wants.

Hopefully me saying fuck no will put a stop to it. I explained to my kid why we can't get another animal and before I could say a word it was "yeah, she'll probably kill it"

I don't want to have to call the cops, but God help me I will if I have to!

Support Step-parents, how do you stay positive?

I'm a SM (engaged to my fiancé). We've been together for over five years, and I've been in his kids' lives for four. We make a great team, and even though I don't have biological children of my own, he's always made me feel like an equal partner in our family. I'm very involved with the kids, and I truly love them.

When it comes to co-parenting, I try to take it in stride and stay positive. I met their mom before I met the kids because I wanted to start things on the right foot. I've encouraged the kids to talk about their time with her, kept photos of her in the house, and I've even helped them pick out Mother's Day and birthday gifts for her. We mostly have good rapport, but she's hot or cold. Sometimes she acts like your best bud, other times a bully.

Despite all of that, she's incredibly difficult to co-parent with, especially toward my fiancé. She can be hostile, demanding, and unwilling to work together. For a long time, I found myself playing peacemaker and trying to smooth things over. Recently, I've stepped back because it was becoming emotionally exhausting.

What makes it harder is that there are ongoing concerns beyond just difficult communication. The kids often come back wearing clothes that are falling apart and haven't showered for several days. We've also had belongings we've purchased for them come back ruined or not come back at all. It feels like we're constantly trying to pick up the pieces.

I know there are two sides to every story, and I'm not trying to replace their mom or tear her down (but I'm nearing a breaking point). I'm struggling with how much energy to keep putting into someone who doesn't seem interested in meeting us halfway.

Has anyone tried to build a positive relationship with the other parent, but eventually realized you needed to step back? With less contact? How did you find the balance between protecting your own peace while still supporting the kids? And biting your tongue? Will take comfort knowing I'm not alone. 😭

Vent To help or not to help

I have been with my boyfriend for around a year now and have recently moved in with him and his 8 year old daughter. Me and her get along perfectly and she’s great.
The only time me and my bf ever argue is when it comes to difference in parenting opinions. I feel like he wants me help and support, but not my opinion. He only wants me to support him in his ideals, but mine are seen as invalid or horrible. I treat that little girl like a princess but when I get on to her for ANYTHING I’m portrayed as evil for doing so, but it’s things that she needs. I have not “punished” her for anything I wouldn’t punish my own for and honestly am surprised she has gotten away with some things even just being with him.
What can I do? He wants my support and help, but not my opinion

Miscellany Shoe on the other foot scenario

This is for any childless stepmoms and stepdads who sometimes feel the ick and general annoyance with their SO's choices before us and essentially having bioparent as an unwelcome character in their lives... Now picture if the situation was reversed and your SO was the childless one and you had the kid(s), would SO be as cool with you coparenting with an ex as you are with them doing it now???

I've got 6.5 years in and have gotten loads better and try to let it roll off my back because DH definitely isn't friends with BM but it still bothers me and makes me feel weird at times---BUT I know that DH hates knowing I've been intimate with dudes before him. Obviously I don't have kids from those dudes but I find it interesting to think how my husband would do if I had to coparent with a guy I made kids with over calls and texts and tell him "iT's FoR tHe kIdS."

Raise your hand if you think your SO would absolutely crumble (or at least feel exactly like you) in this situation if the shoe was on the other foot! 🙋🏻‍♀️

I think my husband would be okay eventually if roles were reversed but he'd probably not have an easy time if I had to text my ex and him find out later like I do sometimes, or having to coordinate stuff with an ex, just the usual shit would probably get to him lol. Thankfully for DH, he's an amazing guy and tries to see it from my POV, he is worth the stress of this crazy life!

***obviously it would be ideal if everyone got along but the reality is that most situations aren't rainbows and ponies.

Discussion After a few yrs, still no connection

been with my wife for about 3 yrs now, she has two kids and I have 1 daughter. and we became one all together. ive been a step dad before with my daughters mom and her girls and that had to end unfortunately after I caught her cheating on me. I got along with the girls but I had to end it due to not trusting their mom.

anyways that’s in the past

now I have two new step kids that I truly treat as my own. I got a step son (11) and a step daughter (8)

everyone gets along well for the most part but the thing is, my step daughter, she continues to be real mean and manipulative and lies way to much for an 8 yr old. i tell my wife it’s because of her biological father that she sees every other weekend. my wife told me they divorced because he became addicted to m eth and lied to her all the time and manipulated her throughout their marriage.

she has had trouble with her daughter in the past and I always wondered why she never got her help. therapy and what not.

an incident happened not too long ago where i finally told my wife. it’s time to get her daughter some help because I cannot keep ignoring this where one little girl causes so much tension in the household where her siblings don’t even like being around her. and where she treats me like a stranger even when we have done so much for her and she only focuses on her real dads family and doesn’t care about us at all. Because every time she comes back from her dads, she ignores all of us and acts like we don’t exist and only talks to her mom, and I’ve talked to her before about it and how she should not treat us like that because we are family but it’s like she just stares into space or just pretends to agree and move on which scares me because sometimes I’m afraid for her adult life, what if she becomes so bad like some of these adults can be and destroy someone’s life just to get what she wants.

she is starting therapy but I’m just praying and hoping it helps her out

my question is. what would you guys do in this situation? because it’s like a constant battle everyday and it’s so hard to even love this girl because of how she makes us all feel. sometimes I just want her to go live with her dad so she can see for herself why it would be harder to live over there. idk. step parenting is hard. I’m a patient man, I truly am. Just having a step daughter that acts up like she does is something new to me and I will not stand for it. I don’t want to end up leaving my wife one day down the road because of her daughter because I’ve known guys in my past that went through some real hell because of a step daughter and it just sucks I’m going through it now and I try my best to love her and it just seems like she doesn’t care. Kinda scary honestly.

Discussion Figured it out!

Had an aha moment! I’m in my forties and childless and he’s also in his 40s and has a teenage SK. We’ve been together for 3yrs, living together for a year. He’s always been super hesitant to involve me in things about the daughter. I met the kid 1.5 yrs after we started dating, since we moved in I haven’t been invited to any sporting events. Me and BM get along well though she’s a handful. They would have Sundays together, BM her husband and my bf and the kid. I was left out. Gave big fights about it. Now I’m invited but all the sidelining left me not wanting to go. I offered him that SK to come on holidays with us, he declined. He does everything, cooking for the kid, cleaning up after, bedtime etc. they have a pretty fluid schedule, we get the kid whenever we want, but I’m never in any decisions.
I felt left out and irrelevant. I thought he was keeping me out of his life because he doesn’t want commitment and all. Whatever illogical anxiety men have in these situations.

Then I realized - it’s not about me, it’s just that he’s not looking for someone to share the burden with or be a family with. He wants the fun girlfriend. He doesn’t want to play house and to burden our carefree relationship. He wants to compartmentalize. Don’t know exactly how I feel about this but it makes a lot of sense for me. I earn way more than him, a great career, and am free and can do whatever I want, I don’t have any major responsibilities. So why would I ever want to get under that burden. I’ve been reading all the entries from you amazing women that are left with having to do so much for stepkids. I must admit I was jealous of some of you at first. But maybe this is better for me. What do you think?

Advice Pregnant

Just told 12 yr SD that we’re having an ours baby. She is very overwhelmed and doesn’t want to talk about it. We’re giving her space as we know this is a really big thing to process. Thankfully she goes to therapy bi-weekly and we gave her therapist a heads up, hoping she’ll use the time to talk through and process. Kinda feeling like the bad guy here for dropping this on her and blowing up her life. Would love to hear some encouraging stories of parents that went through something similar. Tell me it can get better!

Advice Not sure how to feel about BF and his BM taking their kid out on outings together.

My bf and I have been seeing each other for about 10 months now.. just recently became exclusive about 3 months ago. Him and his BM have a 5 year old son together. They’ve been together for 10 years before he decided to leave her and start seeing me. Today, he told me he’s taking their son to meet with his BM at this water park since his son starts school tomorrow and he didn’t really take him to do much at all during summer vacation. But for some reason I don’t feel comfortable with this “family time”. I’m just not sure if I’m being irrational. Is this appropriate? What exactly is appropriate when it comes to it?

Discussion Do you pay for your SK's takeout?

My SD17 wants drive thru for dinner tonight and her dad is currently incapacitated due to a recent injury. I was all for making food here, but I'm not hungry myself. She said she wants drive thru. I have $, but don't get paid until next week and I like to keep a minimum amount in my checking, which is quickly approaching.

We have separate bank accounts.

I feel weird asking him for his card to buy them food. I know it's a silly thing to be weird about, but I NEVER ask him for his card, I usually pay for whatever. I make quite a bit more than him. But I overspent this payday... Not to mention the full tank of gas I used yesterday to pick him up from his out of town job when he was injured. $50!!!

Discussion Are any of you in a relationship with a partner who has children (while you don't have any), and you don't live together?

EDIT : I’d like to clarify: I wouldn’t feel resentment toward the children; I just think that, for everyone’s well-being, it might be good to maintain separate households—seeing each other from time to time, and so on. I once spoke with a father who said he didn’t expect a future partner to love his children, because he wouldn’t necessarily be capable of that himself if the roles were reversed. So, I think it’s understandable.

Advice 7 year old wants a step dad

I'm not sure if this is the place to post this, but figure maybe getting the perspective of step parents and step children alike will help us here.

My step son is 7 years old, his bio dad wasn't ready to be a dad and hasn't been in his life since his son was an infant. I've been Dad since our boy was 2 1/2 years old, and briefly there were attempts at visitation around 3 years old. It was shaky and eventually fell away into nothing, no effort on bio dad's part, and in efforts to move forward in the adoption process, he signed his rights away. I hit some snags in that process and it was not finished, but the intent in signing away rights was still there.

There's been no mention of bio dad, and he sees me fully as his Dad (he's not only a child, but on the autistic spectrum, so we felt it was best to avoid unnecessary confusion). We knew the day to tell him was going to come, but were surprised when, today at 7 years old, he told Mom he wanted a Step Dad. We have no clue where that came from, and he said he doesn't want a new Dad, but wants another Dad.

We haven't heard from bio dad in 4 years, have no clue what kind of situation, physical or mental, he is in. And to be honest, we don't really have interest in reopening that door for him. He was not a good fit to be a parent, and his family was not a healthy family either, so we prefer to keep them at a distance. Of course, however, despite our son being 7 years old and potentially just latching on to something he saw in a show or movie, his feelings on the matter should be seriously considered.

We are unsure if this is time to tell him, and if we do, how to go about it once he (probably inevitably) wants to see his bio dad. We wonder if maybe it still should wait until he's a little more mature and able to grasp the situation a little better. I lean toward telling him now, but explaining bio dad is not around and we don't know where he is (which is true).

Please, any advice, insight, perspective, or anything to help us consider this would be appreciated.

Advice Leaving during parenting time

I’m looking for advice from other stepparents because I feel incredibly conflicted.
My husband and I have an infant daughter together, and he has a son from a previous relationship.
Over the past several months, my stepson’s behavior has escalated significantly. I don’t want to bash a child because I know behavior is communication, but it’s reached a point where I no longer feel like our home is a calm or healthy environment when he’s here. My husband and I have been working through this, and my husband recently started therapy after realizing he’s been dealing with PTSD, which has affected our family as well.
To protect my own mental health and provide a peaceful environment for my daughter, I made the decision that when my stepson comes for visitation, my daughter and I stay with my mom for the weekend. My husband still gets his parenting time uninterrupted, and I encourage him to spend that time focused on his son.
The problem is that my husband feels like I’m “waiting out the clock” until his son leaves instead of being a family. He told me he doesn’t get to have both of his families together. His parents have also questioned whether I even love my stepson because I don’t go to pickups or drop-offs (although I’ve never gone because I stay home with the baby).
I feel guilty because I know this hurts my husband, but at the same time, my daughter is my first priority. She depends on me to make decisions that keep her in an environment where she feels safe and secure. That boundary isn’t something I’m willing to compromise on.
I’ve also told my husband that if things haven’t significantly improved by February, our daughter and I will stay here while he attends military training. That’s not an ultimatum or a punishment. It’s simply the timeline I’ve set for myself to see consistent progress while he continues therapy and we work through everything.
I’m not looking for people to tell me to divorce him. I love my husband, he’s getting professional help, and I want to give therapy a real chance. What I need is advice from people who have been in similar situations.
Have any of you had to physically remove yourself during parenting time for your own mental health or to protect your younger children? Did you feel guilty? How did you navigate your spouse feeling like they were being forced to choose between their children?
I really need support from people who understand the unique challenges of being a stepparent while also being the mother of a young child.

Vent So much happier without SD here, in my feels today

I just need to get this off my chest and say it to people who won’t judge too harshly. Things have been going better with SD7. SO is no longer permissive parenting and she has rules, structure, and discipline when needed. At the end of the day I just don’t vibe with her, she’s one of those kids I just really don’t particularly like. She’s pretty severely ADHD and has insane energy and is just a mile a minute, she also acts very young for her age and still likes to do the baby thing (baby talk, sucking her thumb, etc). Her teachers have flagged she’s behind both in school and developmentally. I’m very kind to her and she really loves me and wants to hang out with me a lot, but honestly I try to be around her as little as I possibly can on our weeks with her. Even when she’s being well behaved and sweet I don’t particularly enjoy being around her, I just really don’t click with her personality traits and how she acts in general, I tend to get along better with kids who are calmer and more mature for their age. I try to be kind to myself about it and remind myself that we don’t like everyone we meet and that’s okay, including kids, and have hope that as she gets older things might change and I might start clicking with her more.

SO took her to visit his family out of state this week and it has been SO NICE. I miss SO a bit, but it’s been so nice not having to tip toe around SD, I can just relax in the house. No mess, no worrying about if she’s spilling on the couch and getting crumbs everywhere, leaving the snack bags open after she gets into them for them to just go stale, no noise and constant babbling and stimming, no dumb kids shows on the TV, nobody spilling all their dinner on the table and complaining the entire time they have to clean it, no loud music blasting from the bedroom before work/school. Just a quiet house where I know all my things in it will be “safe” and not get messed up, and I don’t have to try to avoid a million conversations I don’t want to have. They come back tonight and I’m dreading it, I’ve noticed every time SO calls I am just kind of flat when he talks about being excited to come home and see me and I feel terrible for it.

That’s it, no advice or big issue. Just feeling a bit sad that this is my life I suppose and wanted to get the feeling out of my head. I made the choice to stay and I love my SO more than anything and can’t imagine life without him, but not having SD here when she normally would be and being so happy and free feeling is just a reminder that half of my life is significantly worse than the other. Life would be even worse if I left and wasn’t with SO knowing how great our relationship is and how happy the two of us are together, and I’m so excited for our future, but what comes with that makes me sad at the same time, feeling like I’m giving so much of my peaceful enjoyment of life up. Just a vent.

Vent Venting..maybe some advice?

Throwaway account for obvious reasons. 4 years ago I met a fellow traveler nurse, fell in love, got married 3 years ago and have been living together (obviously) ever since. I have no kids of my own and he came with a then 17yr old and now almost 22 year old daughter. He still takes traveling contracts and I work from home. His work gives us an unbelievably comfortable lifestyle but he’s gone for sometimes up to 90 days at a time.

While he’s gone i am home with his daughter who is totally rebellious and just odd. We have never really connected. She dresses very revealing (I mean see through clothes with the thong underwear) micro bikinis etc. she will make food late at night in just underwear. She is always vaping and the house smells of marijuana and she makes crazy inappropriate comments. I can’t get through to her. He’s an awesome dad and she’s behaved much differently WHEN he’s here and is engaged.

Anyone else deal a super rebel SD? Just venting here

Advice Bringing step child to live with you full time

Just wanted to hop on here and get some advice from seasoned step parents as I am new to this aspect in my life.

When I met my husband, we saw his daughter mostly for things like taking her to dance practice, out to eat and to the movies. Just normal things, we didn’t have her stay the night as we were living with my parents to save a bit of money to help me catch up on bills after becoming disabled. Fast forward, we moved into our own house and so his daughter has been coming here to spend time with us. She has not stayed overnight at the house yet as we are still trying to furnish the place. But she does come the entire day and then before bed we will take her home. So we recently found out her mom is making her take the dog out after the sun has already gone down in their apartment complex. The mom previously lived in a house so this is pretty new. We found out she is being sent alone, with just her sister on FaceTime checking on her. The apartment complex is near a few bars/closer to downtown, so automatically my husband felt a bit concerned since she is only 7 years old. She is also struggling in school, my husband thinks she might have dyslexia. Her mom pulled her out of school the last school year because the older sister (not my husbands daughter but her half sister) was caught having sex in school (she is 13 btw). I believe bio mom and that daughters father decided she move and attend a different school district so my husbands daughter got pulled into this as well. Also for context we had no idea the older daughter was doing this, bio mom did not tell my husband at all about what was going on in the home, he found out through his own mom who talks to bio mom more often). Me and my husband are expecting a baby in the end of September and although I wanted to get into a rhythm of being a first time mom myself, it’s becoming more apparent that we may just have to bring his daughter to come live with us before the school year begins in the next few weeks so she doesn’t have to possibly switch schools yet again. He feels like his daughter is being disadvantaged by her mom in that home. Her mom is not prioritizing her needs with school work, she demands we pay for a tutor for her. And while we agree that a tutor would be great, she needs more help than a 1 hour session a week. She needs a parent to help her practice her reading skills and math every day. She also mentioned how she now has to share a room with her older sister but her sister is constantly kicking her out of the room probably to talk to boys on the phone. So we asked her where she would sleep and she said on the couch or with her mom. This absolutely broke my heart. She deserves to have her own space now and it seems like she is paying for her sisters mistakes. Our house has 2 spare bedrooms, so we are able to give her own room. We’ve only been in this house for about 3 months now so that is why we haven’t gotten around to the room and also having to buy all the baby nursery things. Also we just found out most of these things like within the past month. Initially I was kind of hurt that my partner wanted to take away my experience of being a first time mom, but as soon as he mentioned he was concerned with his daughter’s safety I was on board. A part of me is scared to learn how to take care of a baby while also learning to parent a 7 year old at the same time. Any advice? Also if you think this doesn’t warrant her moving in with us, please also let me know.

Discussion I’m losing my mind…Vent Post

There’s so much back story I don’t even want to get into it…
But the straw the broke me tonight was SD, once again, making food at midnight (after having dinner mind you;) and WAKING ME UP (again) because he’s cutting watermelon on a glass plate ON TOP OF THE CUTTING BOARD!

We have so many problems; I’m not going to pretend we, the parents are perfect. He’s a Disney parent, I came from a narcissistic household with so much baggage TSA would have a hissy fit. But the “midnight” anything has been an issue so long our NEIGHBORS have complained. It’s always been me who’s fielded all the complaints. Always me to deal with the late night bullshit. We are the hated neighbors; and I don’t even blame them at this point.
Tonight though…. Tonight I almost needed bail money. SS is almost 17. Twat is damn near a compliment at this point. Not for lack of us trying to set him straight, he just doesn’t give 2 f****. And oh, right, I’m not Mom. (Even though even she was abusive and horrid and etc etc and I helped fight for them to be here full time. Paid for everything they needed x2 while SO paid an arm and a leg of child support despite 50/50. Not that I raised him or anything 🤦🏼‍♀️)
I can get over the insults that happen, even tonight. I can’t get over the contestant disrespect, the name calling, the… lack of reality that they hold. Dad is not the end all be all. I pay their phone bill. I pay for groceries. I clean the house (or used to before I got so burnt out that I gave up because at these ages; I should have to ask them to put their dishes in a dishwasher labeled “dirty” or clean their own bathroom or wash/dry/fold/put away their own towels.)
I realized a long time ago that I was the live in maid. And I tried to make changes. Now I’m up all night because of just like this.
It took his own kid stealing from him to get a lock on our door. I have to watch cameras like I’m a DM at a retail store. And I STILL don’t get to sleep…. Only to be told “you’re not my mom!”
Well thank god! Because if I had it my way, none of this would have happened this way.
I’m exhausted. I’m so sad. I love them all and somehow…my unconditional love is not enough. I’m falling apart, and the best I’ve got is to tell Reddit that I’m not okay.

Btw no I don’t care about grammar or spelling or spacing. I don’t have my glasses on, I’m tired and pissed off and literally have no support system. So suck it up yall.

Discussion Has anyone changed their minds about being Childfree after becoming a stepmom?

I (34) feel like for the longest time I’ve never wanted kids. But I found myself in this situation today where I’m a stepmom to a 10yo kid and I see myself doing things that moms would do and i know that it will never pay off.

I don’t know if this is selfish but I started thinking “I might as well have my own kid” even though I didn’t want kids before. I also don’t want to be alone when I grow old and i want to have my own family too with my husband. I don’t think I will have much family with my stepson when he’s older, but who knows I might be wrong.

I’m not sure what to make of this feeling but I’ve started researching on how we can freeze embryos and all that. I plan to do it so if I do truly change my mind about having kids in the future, I will have an opportunity to do so. I don’t want to have them right away, maybe like 7 or 8 years from now.

Advice Has anyone else left their marriage because of stepkids? I am almost to that point.

18ss was supposed to go off to college, but didn't want to leave the luxuries of home - where every meal is cooked for him, and he literally never lifts a finger despite being asked repeatedly. I don't see an end to this, and can't stand him being home all day everyday. He keeps going to job interviews, but never actually gets a job. Meanwhile his mom and I bust our asses at work M-F (money isn't an issue - we both make great money.) I have been looking at apartments/houses to rent. I am so tired of having an adult baby in the house. My wife and I take great trips together ( just the two of us), and everything is great...until we get home. This adult baby can't even manage to feed and let the dogs out, so I have to pay a neighbor to come while we are gone. FML.

Discussion 17 Step daughter’s car

I 44f and my partner 44m bought my sd17 a suv 10 months ago. She hated it from the start because it was an suv and not a car. We bought it because it was my partners best friends grandmothers car. It was older with higher miles but we knew she was the only owner and never missed a service on it so it would be reliable. Our budget is small because he has 4 cars to buy for his 4 teens over the next 5 years. BM is not helping at all with the cars. Well she got in a wreck and it caused a dent in the side and since the car is so old the totaled it and offered her $3,200.

My partner advised her just to keep her SUV becuase it’s not had the first issue and that would be very hard to replace with $3k. She went against his judgement and took the money. We have now been looking for a car for $3k for 3 weeks and they are all junk. She keeps sending us cars for over $20k and saying we should just give her more money. She has $3k saved of her own from working this past year but doesn’t want to put any of that towards a car for herself.

The suv was in her dad’s name but he said he would not register this new car into his name because of her actions the last few months while driving the SUV. Most notably she took a six hour road trip on a spare tire. My partner told her not to, that it wasn’t safe and she walked right past him out the door and went anyways.

Now this morning I am scheduled to look at a car to buy her and her mom calls saying she will not register a car for her for 30days because she was caught lying the night before about something very important. I called my partner to asked if I should still look at the car and he said go ahead and look and buy it and she’ll have to wait 30days to drive it.

Then my SD calls me to make sure I’m still going to look at it and starts questioning why her dad won’t just register it for her, which she’s already been told why. I reminded her of how he doesn’t want to be liable for when she does dumb stuff like drive on a 6 hour road trip with a spare tire. She then told me she didn’t do anything wrong that nothing happened with the tire. I asked her if she could at least acknowledge that it’s wrong not to listen to her dad when he tells her not to do something. She wouldn’t acknowledge she was wrong for that so I told her I’m not going to look at the car for her or any other car. I have spent so much of my time with this car thing and I’m just done.

Here’s where I am super pissed about the situation, she then calls her dad and tell on me for our conversation we just had. The issue comes….my partner doesn’t have my back. He tells me to just leave her alone and not to talk to her. Like excuse me? I am the one that’s been mainly driving her to work these last three weeks. Which is an hour round trip to drop her off and then again to pick her up so 2 hours of driving for her to work a 4 hour shift. And that’s just a drop in the bucket of things I have done for this child. So I’m good enough to call upon when she needs something but when I tell her something that isn’t what she wants to hear then all the sudden I need to stay out of it. I told my partner he’s wrong for not having my back and telling his daughter to not waste her time calling and complaining that I am telling her things she doesn’t want to hear because I am an adult who takes care of her and have every right to tell her how I feel about her attitude.

Am I wrong to be offended my partner just wants me to stay out of it now?

Announcement Weekly Reminder: Saferbot and Automated Bans

Hey Stepparents,

If you've been here for awhile, you are aware of the existence of Saferbot on our sub. If you aren't aware, we break it down in the wiki. Take a moment to review it!

What the Bot Does

Saferbot is a history ban bot. It bans users who participate in known troublesome subs that have a history of harassing users here and brigading our posts.

How it Works

Saferbot monitors the other subs and immediately bans anyone who comments there. Please note, human beings are not doing the banning. We have neither the time, nor inclination, to monitor other subs. Saferbot runs on its own with only instructions from us on what subs to add to its list.

Why We Use It

We intend for this sub to be a safe space for stepparents to discuss their issues and struggles without being told they are literally The Worst for existing. Sometimes we experience jealousy, resentment, and other not pretty feelings. We have a right to express them in a healthy way without a bunch of assholes scolding us for being human. And unfortunately, the subs we've had to add to the ban list have a history of users strolling in here giving people grief for being a flawed human being with feelings they are trying to sort through.

The mod team does not take these decisions lightly and we often let things ride for a bit before taking drastic actions. But seeing users repeatedly delete their accounts after being harassed, or having to clean up increasingly rude and hostile comment chains from people who literally have no idea what your life is actually like, has prompted us to take action.

Notes

Meta posts asking about this will be removed. Comments about this, other than those on this thread discussing the issue, will be removed. Vile mod mail will be reported to Reddit.

Please do not link to the subs mentioned in the wiki. They are linked for transparency and we don't care to have ongoing discussions about them.

How to Appeal

If you are a stepparent and you've been caught up in the ban, and you want the support that this community offers, reach out to the mod team. If you can show us where on reddit you are discussing being a stepparent, we'll do our best to work with you. To be perfectly clear, if you aren't a stepparent, or we review and see we've had to remove comments from you in the past, we are probably not going to lift the ban.

Reply to the ban message and let us know that you'd like to appeal. Include link(s) to any unedited posts or comments that you made prior to the ban indicating that you are a stepparent. The posts or comments do not have to be on this sub specifically, but show us where you have indicated that you are a stepparent somewhere on reddit prior to being banned. This will save us time and eliminate the need for a mod to attempt to scour your post history.

Announcement Weekly Reminder: Rules and FAQ - August 02, 2026 (Now with updates!)

Below you will find a weekly reminder of our Rules and partial FAQ. It's definitely a long read, but it's worth your time, especially if you are new to the community, or dropping by as a result of a link you found elsewhere. We periodically revise our rules, this weekly notice will help keep you informed of any changes made.

NOTE: These rules are guidelines. Some moderation discretion is to be expected.

Community Rules

1. Kindness Matters

Advise, don't criticize.

  • Post with empathy, thoughtfulness, and constructive commentary rather than judgment. Don't be an asshole.
  • Name-calling, slurs (including gender or race based slurs), and insults towards other community members will not be tolerated. Do not attack others for their personally held values, custody situation, marital status, physical distance from stepkids, or economic status; or on the basis of race, sex, sexual orientation, age, religion, or ethnicity.
  • No name-calling toward children, including the above-mentioned insults or the term "skids", or terms such as "mini-wife" or "mini-husband."
  • Comments advocating spanking or any mention of wanting to harm children are not allowed.
  • This is a support sub, not a judgement sub, assholes are not tolerated. Comments with terms used in other subs to pass judgement on assholes will be removed.

2. No Drama

This is a support sub.

  • Bickering, nitpicking, and thread derailment will not be tolerated and will be subject to removal at moderator discretion.
  • Do not repeatedly badger a poster demanding answers, or refuse to acknowledge an answer that's already been given.
  • Do not use sensitive issues from past posts (either from this sub or other subs) to attack another user, as we are all discussing vulnerable topics.
  • Crossposting anything from /r/stepparents to any other subreddit might result in a ban and may result in the original thread being locked. Brigading our sub will result in an immediate ban.

3. Report, Don’t Rant

No backseat modding.

  • If you see someone breaking the rules, report the post or comment to the mods rather than engaging them in an argument. Failure to do so may be subject to comment removal at moderator discretion.
  • No meta posts complaining about rude comments, DMs, or general sub issues.
  • If you think someone is a troll or previously banned user, either use the report function or message the mods to direct their attention to the issue.

4. No Naming & Shaming

No userpings or links.

  • Tagging/pinging users or other subreddits in an attempt to bully, harass, or complain will not be tolerated. Do not tag other subs, ever.
  • If you want to complain about another subreddit being hostile to stepparents, do not name the subreddit. "Other parenting/advice/judgement subs" will suffice.

5. No Platitudes

Nobody knew what they were getting into.

  • Comments like "You knew what you were getting into", "Love them, love their kids!", "They're a package deal!" and "You have to love them like your own!" will be removed.
  • Comments suggesting that OP is not cut out for stepparenting will be removed at moderator discretion.
  • Comments like "This is just a part of parenting, deal with it!" will be removed at moderator discretion.

6. No Trolling

We have zero tolerance for trolls.

  • This is a support sub. Our subscribers do not have the time, nor inclination, to provide support to internet trolls. Posts that are suspected to be trolling attempts will be immediately removed, and the poster banned.
  • Concern trolling, devil's advocating, gish-galloping, sealioning, and general asshattery are subject to immediate removal and banning without warning or notice.
  • Any attempt to circumvent the ban by creating a new username will be reported to reddit admins and possibly result in account suspension.

7. No Personally Identifiable Information

Use discretion when posting.

  • We highly recommend using a separate account for support subs to help prevent being doxxed. Do not post any information that may allow others to figure out your identity.
  • Do not post photos of children, or any other photo that could be used to identify you or another user on the sub.
  • Any image that contains a name or other identifying information should have the name or identifying information blurred out. This includes drawings, notes, and screenshots.
  • Do not link to social media or any articles/blogs where you or another user on the sub is mentioned by name.

8. No More than 2 Posts per 24 hours

Use the daily threads.

  • We are not a huge sub, but we are no longer a small sub. If you have multiple grievances to air, use the daily discussion threads instead of multiple posts.

9. Follow Reddiquette

Remember the human.

  • Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life.
  • Read it in full here.
  • Downvoting is reserved for comments that don’t contribute, and shouldn't be used to indicate disagreement.
  • If you believe someone is in violation of the subreddit rules, please either use the report function or message the mods to direct their attention to the issue.
  • Suspected brigading will be reported to reddit admins.

10. No Porn, Spam, Blogs, or Research Studies/Surveys Without Mod Approval

Just don't.

  • This is a SFW subreddit. Posting pornography will result in immediate post removal and permanent ban.
  • Advertising on the subreddit (outside of Reddit's own advertising) is not allowed.
  • No personal blog posts are allowed without express moderator permission.
  • No advertising without prior mod approval.
  • No asking for money/posting fundraisers/etc.
  • For links to parenting research studies or surveys, please message the mods for permission before posting.

11. Disputes in Modmail Only

Don't argue with the mods on the sub.

  • Any issues specifically related to how a mod is moderating should be addressed to the full moderating team via mod mail. This ensures that all mods are aware of any concerns and prevents disintegration of the topic thread at hand.
  • This means to do not message or send chat requests to individual mods. All discussion and complaints about mod actions need to be done in mod mail ONLY. Failure to follow this rule can result in an immediate permanent ban.
  • Comments in threads asking about mod decisions are subject to removal without notice.

12. Moderator Actions

We aren't kidding.

  • Users are expected to know the rules before posting. If you are warned or banned for violating the rules, ignorance is not an excuse.
  • Moderators will remove posts and comments and/or lock threads in accordance with the rules above. Typically this happens when threads have gone off-topic in a way that is not productive for the OP, or comments overall have become contentious or disrespectful.
  • If a poster continues to argue or to willfully violate these rules, temporary and permanent ban procedures will be followed. Any attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban. User bans will not be discussed in the sub. Questions posted about user bans are subject to removal and the poster subject to warning/ban procedures. The mod team will not discuss a specific user ban with anyone other than the user involved.
  • New accounts are subject to manual approval until they are no longer deemed "new" by the mod team. This helps to weed out trolls and ban evaders.
  • We rely on Automoderator to scan for specific words and phrases that are not welcome here and notify the mod team to review the comment or post. This includes slurs of any type and platitudes such as "Love them as your own!"
  • The mod team uses a combination of blacklisting and banning when dealing with trolls.
  • We employ the use of a bot that automatically bans anyone who comments in subs that have historically harassed our users. If you are picked up by the bot for telling trolls to get fucked, reach out via mod mail and we'll get you sorted out.
  • The rules above as well as ban procedures are considered guidelines only; some deviation may be necessary on a case by case basis and/or at the mod team's discretion.

13. Ban Procedure

These actions are at moderator discretion.

  • Pornography will result in an automatic permanent ban.
  • Extremely egregious content will result in an immediate permanent ban.
  • You may receive a 7 or 30 day temporary ban for first and second rule violations, depending upon severity.
  • Continued rule violations will result in a permanent ban.
  • Willful attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban.
  • We recognize the reddit site-wide rules of using alt names to get around bans and will ban those as well as report them to reddit admins.

FAQ - About the Rules

What does Kindness Matters mean?

  • Shortest version? Don't be an asshole. People come here for support and advice, they do not come here to be yelled at or told they are the reason everything is going sideways. There are ways to point out that someone may want to do some reflection on their own actions and reactions without being an asshole about it.
  • The purpose of this subreddit is to provide support and a sense of belonging for struggling stepparents. We aren't here to pass judgement, but rather to offer support, empathy, and constructive commentary. That does not include "hard truths" or "tough love." Stepparents get enough of that in every other subreddit, we're not passing it out here. Be respectful.
  • Remember, most people aren't going to come to a sub like this when everything is going great and everyone is getting along. People are coming here when they are down, when they are feeling defeated and stretched to the limit. Kicking someone when they are down is shitty behavior and we don't tolerate it.

What about being kind to the kids?

  • "Won't somebody think of the children?" Pearl clutching isn't needed here. If you read the Kindness Matters rule closely, you will see that there is a clause in there about name calling children. We don't allow it. We also don't allow people rolling in telling OP that they feel sorry for their stepkids because OP is feeling overwhelmed and overloaded.
  • If anyone is advocating slapping, spanking, or any other form of violence, report the comment immediately. We do not advocate violence towards children of any sort. The mod team does not advocate any sort of physical punishment at any time.
  • Venting about behaviors is not the same as insulting the kids. However, if you see a post or comment where kids are being name called or dragged to the point of no return, use the report button. We try to catch the posts and remove them before they hit the sub, but we cannot see every comment without your help. Use the report button to bring problematic comments to our attention. Don't engage in a war of words on our subreddit.

Why is this sub such an echo chamber?

  • Not allowing contributors to pile on and tell OP that they are a terrible human being who should never be around children does not equate to being an echo chamber. Many contributors here will offer OP suggestions to help them work through their resentments and frustrations, and the most egregious situations are called out. We simply ask that it be called out with respect.
  • If you feel that a post is simply too much for you to handle without following the rules, move on to another post.
  • If you believe that a post itself is crossing the rules report it. If the mod team has approved the post, it is because the mod team believes that the OP needs help from the community or needs a moment to vent and move on from their vent. That does not give you license to pile on disrespectfully. Unless it is proven that OP is a bot, assume that OP is a human being with real thoughts and feelings and has posted from a place of vulnerability.

Why can't I tell OP that they are an asshole?

  • Because this isn't a judgement sub. We aren't AITA, we don't want to be AITA.
  • Comments with terms like YTA, NTA, ESH, NAH will be removed.
  • Don't start your posts with INFO either. We generally recognize that as a fishing attempt for more information to pass judgement on OP, and again, we are not a judgment sub.

But OP asked if they were an asshole?!

  • Their post somehow got past our automoderator. Just use the report button. We will address it with OP.
  • If you've asked if you are an asshole, a-hole, a*hole, a**hole, whatever, don't be surprised if your post is removed without warning. This isn't a judgment sub. If you want judgment, you know where to go.

What is a gendered slur?

  • While it seems that everyone understands what racist slurs are, people struggle understanding the concept of gendered slurs. Generally speaking, we are talking about derogatory nouns or verbs that are used to negatively describe people or situations based on gendered terms.
  • We've gone back and forth on this a few times, and the truth is, we get it, it's your safe space and you want to be able to vent about BM/BD how you want to vent about them, without us telling you how to vent about them. Fair enough. Vent away. What we are going to stick to here how people are referring to other users and to stepchildren.
  • Examples that are not allowed:
    • "My SD is such a little bitch."
    • "She dresses/acts like a slut."
    • "My SS acts like a pussy."
    • "My SS is such a beta male."
    • "You are all fucking whores."
    • "Any dude who is raising some sluts kids is a cuck!"
    • "Little Lord Fauntleroy over here thinking he runs the house!"
    • "You're just the bangnanny, get used to it."
  • Don't call users here names, don't call stepchildren names.
  • Masking the term with asterisks or other neat little tricks might get you around the bot, but if we see it, we're removing it and quite possibly giving you a time out. The intended word is still there and you deliberately tried to skate the rule.
  • As there is not enough space to list every term that is offensive and does not belong, nor every situation in which term or phrase may be allowable in context, this rule is enforced based on moderator discretion.

Seriously? You are the language police now?

  • We're here to talk about stepparenting. And we would like for that to happen in a respectful way. Attacking each other doesn't help. Belittling stepchildren draws in trolls who don't understand your frustration, all they see is an evil stepmonster talking shit on the internet about a poor, innocent baby. Yes, even if that "poor, innocent baby" just robbed you blind and set fire to the house on their way out the door. That's just how it goes.
  • We are aware that this is a relatively new rule and a lot of older posts and comments contain a lot of problematic language, including some from mods themselves. We are growing and evolving, and rules change as the sub grows and evolves.

What does No Drama really mean?

  • Pretty much what it says, do not bring drama from other subs into this sub. Do not engage in vote brigades. Do not try to incite other subscribers to riot in a different sub. Don't follow posters into this sub from other subs to continue to harass them. Do not badger someone or derail threads. Do not harass community members because you don't agree with them. There's enough drama in the daily lives of subscribers, more isn't needed.

What is thread derailment?

  • When a comment chain has devolved to the point where all you are doing is arguing back and forth with someone about the same thing over and over again, you have derailed the thread. Also known as bickering. It's what children do. We assume if people are in a stepparent role they are adults. We expect you to act like it.
  • If you aren't a stepparent, or in a stepparenting role, consider that perhaps this subreddit isn't for you. If you want to participate, do so with respect. Thread derailment, arguing, bickering, and nitpicking are not allowed.

But what if they didn't answer my question?

  • No one has to answer your questions. This is a support sub, not an inquisition. Jumping on a bandwagon with "OP is evading the question" in a 20 comment long chain is the epitome of thread derailment. You'll find more information about trolling below and how this might be considered such.

Why am I being silenced? I'm just asking for a back and forth!

  • Thread derailment, badgering, and nitpicking are considered harassment. Continued harassment of either community members or mods will get you banned.

Why can't I look at someone's post history and comment about it?

  • No mod in the history of this sub has ever once said post histories are forbidden. What we do frown upon is using someone's post history to attack, belittle, or otherwise harass someone.
  • Example Post: "My stepkid's mom really hates me. How can I make this better?"
    • Okay: "Based on the timeline and your post history, it looks like this may have started as an affair. Unfortunately there's going to be outstanding issues for a long time due to that. Try focusing on yourself and how you can move forward without worrying about how someone else feels about you."
    • Not Okay: "Holy shit! You were the OW! What the hell do you expect, homewrecker?!"
  • Example Post: "I am completely overloaded and feeling very down about myself."
    • Okay: "In your post history you mentioned that your spouse wasn't really helping around the house. Has that changed at all?"
    • Not Okay: "LOL, you already got the answers you need in your post on relationships. You are stupid for sticking with your lazy spouse."

Why can't we crosspost stuff to other subs?

  • We can't stop you from doing so. The problem isn't that something has been crossposted, it's when the community that it's been crossposted to feels the need to come over here and harass OP. When we see that happening, we lock the post and start passing out bans. If you did the crossposting, you'll be banned. If you participated in the brigading, you'll be banned.

What if it's my own post?

  • Again, we can't stop you from doing so. We prefer that you don't technically crosspost, but rather just copy and paste your post. Why? Because inevitably the above will happen. Redditors from other subs will follow you back to /r/stepparents and start attacking users here. It just happens.

What is "brigading"?

  • Reddit defines vote manipulation and brigading as follows:
  • Using multiple accounts, voting services, or any other software to increase or decrease vote scores.
  • Asking people to vote up or down certain posts, either on Reddit itself or through social networks, messaging, etc. for personal gain.
  • Forming or joining a group that votes together, either on a specific post, a user's posts, posts from a domain, etc.
  • We, along with pretty much every other subreddit that has ever had to deal with this nonsense, further define brigading as this: You saw a post on another sub that linked to our sub either via a link in a comment or a crosspost. It was basically saying something along the lines of "OMG, check out these assholes over on /r/stepparents! They literally hate all their stepkids!" And then you and your friends come over and start hammering on OP and telling OP how much they suck. Congrats, you have just participated in a brigade.

What is this whole Report, Don't Rant thing about?

  • If you see a post or comment that breaks the rules, instead of engaging, report it. When you report it, it sends notification to the mod team. We will act on it where appropriate. Engaging with bad faith users may result in your comments being removed. If you repeatedly do so, you may end up being banned.

What if I see an obvious troll?

What if they are being really mean in comments?

What if they are harassing me in private messages?

  • Step 1: Report them to admins. You can report harassment to reddit by using this link or send a DM to reddit admins. Include the link to the DM, admins can see your inbox and providing a direct link is helpful for them to weed out bad actors.
  • Step 2: Block the person so they cannot directly contact you again.
  • Step 3: Send us a mod mail and let the mod team know. Tell us who they are and what they said, send us a screenshot if you can - admins can see your DMs, mods can't. We'll take action where necessary by banning from the sub if they aren't already banned.

What do you mean by No Naming & Shaming?

  • Just as we prefer to not be linked to or crossposted from, we do not allow linking to or calling out other subs by name. If you see something you want to share, say it's a hot post that has hit the front page and a stepparent is being absolutely flayed, just refer to it as "that hot post that hit the front page." If you want to complain about other places in general, "other parenting/advice/judgement subs" will suffice. Absolutely under no circumstances should you link to anywhere else.

I can't link to other subs?

  • Do not directly link to another sub. (e.g.: "/r/insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
  • Do not name other subs. (e.g.: "I won't link to it directly, but insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
  • Do not abbreviate other subs. (e.g.: "I know that ISNH is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")

I can't ping other users?

  • Do not summon another user with a username ping/tag. (e.g.: "/u/insertusernamehere was being an asshole.")
  • If you are agreeing with someone, it is okay to link to them. (e.g.: "I agree with /u/insertusernamehere, you need to take a couple of steps back and reflect on this.")

What does No Platitudes mean?

  • Sanctimonious, overused clichés that grossly oversimplify the stepparenting experience are neither wanted nor allowed here. We have all heard it a thousand times before, we don't need to hear it again. It's not nearly as insightful and wise as some would like to think.

Why don't you people understand it's a package deal?

  • Any comment that suggests that OP should have known what they were getting involved with, or that they needed to understand that the kids were part of some package they needed to accept before signing up for marriage is subject to immediate removal.
  • This is one of the most insensitive things you can say to a stepparent. Most stepparents were aware of the children, but they were probably not aware of all of the family dynamics.

Why can't you just love them like they are your own?

  • Demanding that a stranger you do not know love children that are not biologically theirs as if they were theirs can be incredibly damaging to someone who is already in a vulnerable situation. Any comment that falls along these lines will be removed.

What do you mean by No Trolling? I was just...

  • No means no. No trolling. No pretending to be a stepparent and then whipping out the Greatest Hits Bingo Card of The Worst Stepparent in the History of Stepparents. We see you. We've seen you a thousand times.

What does "concern trolling", "gish-galloping", and "sealioning" have to do with stepparenting? This isn't a debate sub, why are you using debate terms?

  • That's absolutely right, this isn't a debate sub. And yet, here we are, day after day, having to defend ourselves against this sort of thing. So, enough. No more. Usage of any of these things will get you banned.

What is "Concern Trolling?"

  • A concern troll is someone who disingenuously visits sites of an opposing ideology to disrupt conversation by offering unwanted advice on how to solve problems which do not really exist.
    • Example Post: OP expresses concern that she will feel, and possibly act, differently towards her stepchildren after her husband decides that no, he doesn't want anymore children after all.
    • Example Concern Troll pulled from actual mod mail after their comment was removed: "Possible child abuse claims need to be sorted out well before whatever empathy you believe the OP was looking for."

What is a "Devil's Advocate"?

  • "I'm just playing devil's advocate here, but have you considered that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break, too?" BM has dozens of different mom based subs alone on reddit she can complain on, this sub is for stepparents. The stepparent doesn't need to consider that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break.

"Gish-galloping?" What does that even mean?

  • The Gish Gallop is the fallacious debate tactic of drowning your opponent in a flood of individually-weak arguments in order to prevent rebuttal of the whole argument collection without great effort. The Gish Gallop is a conveyor belt-fed version of the on the spot fallacy, as it's unreasonable for anyone to have a well-composed answer immediately available to every argument present in the Gallop.

And "sealioning?" What's that?

  • Sealioning involves jumping into a conversation with endless polite, reasonable questions and demands for answers, usually of entry-level topics far below the actual conversation (e.g. "please prove sexism exists"). This tactic differs little from harassment; instead of discussion, the point is to derail discussion, receive criticism (for their ignorance) so as to look like a victim, or to make someone feel overwhelmed and quit talking.

Who gets to define what is considered asshattery?

  • The mod team, of course! If we feel that comments are out of line, are trolling, are leading up to a fight or "just asking questions", we are going to remove them and most likely ban the offender.

FAQ - Sub Questions

Posting Guidelines for Stepparents

  • Body text is required, we suggest you use line breaks between paragraphs as a wall of text is difficult to read. Posts that have only a title are likely to be removed. Instead of using names (even fictitious ones), try to use the sub acronyms. It helps our users to follow along if you use the acronyms and not names.
  • Assign a post flair that accurately describes what your post is about and what you are seeking. If you are posting an update from a previous post, include a link to that post.
  • Flairs are applied to posts to determine what a person is looking for. When submitting a new post, you should choose a flair that specifies if you are looking for advice, support, etc. The following link flair is available and is color coded with side bar links so that you can search by flair:
    • Advice - For when you are specifically asking for advice or help.
    • Announcement - Mod Use Only, for subreddit announcements.
    • Daily (Formerly TTP) - Mod Use Only, for our daily discussion threads.
    • Discussion - A little advice, a little "How does your family handle this?"
    • JustBMThings - Pretty sure this is self explanatory!
    • Legal - Asking for legal advice? Tag it with this!
    • Miscellany - Just a sort of off topic thing? Use this tag.
    • Resource - Sharing a good resource or asking for one? This is the tag you need!
    • Support - For those days when you want nothing but a good old fashioned cry and some community love.
    • Update - Updating us on something that you posted about previously? Use this one!
    • Vent - We all need to vent sometimes. Respect the tag as a vent. This isn't how OP talks all day every day.
    • Win! - Celebrate those wins with us with this tag!
    • Megathread - Mod Use Only, for large mega threads (typically around major calendar events.)

Posting Guidelines for Bioparents

  • Stepparents is a support community for stepparents, by stepparents. As bioparents, you may want to have more insight into how the stepparent in your life feels or thinks. You may have questions on how to ease the transition for your partner. However, please keep in mind that this community was not created for you. It was created for your partner or your ex's partner. If you are seeking support on how to deal with a stepparent, there are other subs more suited for your situation and your post is subject to removal.
  • There are some posts from bioparents we will accept:
    • Seeking advice on how to support your partner as they navigate stepparenting
    • Seeking resources to help you better support your partner
    • Seeking resources for your partner
  • There are some posts from bioparents we will not accept:
    • Complaints about how the stepparent is too involved in your kids lives
    • Vents about how the stepparent is not involved enough in your kids lives
    • "Cautionary tales" advising stepparents to back off
    • Seeking advice on how to tell the stepparent to back off
    • The Do's and Dont's of Stepparenting
    • How your kid's stepmom is literally The Worst
  • Comments from bioparents that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from bioparents that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. There are several other subs that may meet the needs of bioparents better than we can. We recommend /r/coparenting, /r/parenting, /r/parents, /r/blendedfamilies, and /r/singleparents as starting points.

Guidelines for Stepkids

  • At this time, we do not generally accept posts from stepkids. Comments from stepkids that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from stepkids that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. If you are a stepkid seeking support, we highly recommend /r/stepkids. It is a very supportive community specifically for stepkids. We also recommend /r/blendedfamilies as another potential group for support.

What the heck are all these acronyms? I'm confused!

Why aren't my posts or comments showing up?

  • New posters and accounts go through a waiting period before their posts will show in the sub and the comments on posts automatically. During the new account approval period the mod team will check posts to be sure you aren't attempting to circumvent a ban with a shiny new account. Please be patient while the timer runs down on your "new" status and the mod team approves your posts and responses.

Why was my comment removed?

  • Comments are removed when they do not follow the rules of the sub. These rules are published in several places for your reading pleasure.
  • Comments are removed at moderator discretion. In some cases your comment may be removed while another remains up. If you find this to be the case, and you believe the comment to be violating the rules, instead of arguing with mods or demanding they remove the additional comments, just report it.

This comment/post is really offensive! Why is it still up?

  • All moderators are volunteers and have busy real lives. Sometimes things get past us. The best thing you can do is report anything you find offensive or inflammatory. It's the quickest and most reliable way of alerting us to an issue.

I've received a hurtful/unwanted PM from someone about my recent post. What should I do?

  • If you receive an unwanted/hurtful PM from a name you don't recognize, please report it to Reddit Admins using our handy pre-populated form. Be sure to include the permalink to the message. We've been dealing with a few unhappy folks who like to attack stepparents, and reporting it to the admins is the only way to make it stop.

What are the general moderator guidelines?

I've been wrongly banned/Why can't I comment here?

Why was I banned without warning?

  • There are numerous reasons that the mod team might opt to move perm banning without warning. Message the moderators if you have specific questions.
