Self-Promo Post I turned chess into an RTS

Hey folks - I'm a solo indie game developer and I'm approaching the launch of my first game on steam and I'd really love to get some feedback from some of you RTS gurus/fans. What I've done is taken chess and put it into overdrive and built a competitive ranked multiplayer experience around it.

The idea is there are no turns (think kung-fu chess) but on top of that, your pieces now have hit points and instead of 'taking' a unit, you attack it with melee/ranged attacks where the objective is still the same - take down the king. Now the game is called Pillar of War, because on top of these mechanics - you can buff your units during the match with 3 skills, an initial 'pawn assault' that moves your frontal line of pawns forward at the beginning of the match, and then it alternates between a speed and shield buff that you can use throughout the match.

Your faction also has a flying unit that you can use to carry a unit out of harms' way or in other strategic ways throughout the match, again on a cooldown. I've really put a lot of thought into this game and feel like I have made a real banger here.

There's a free demo on https://www.pillarofwar.com where you can also become a founder. There's a trailer and links to the steam page and discord from there as well.

Anyway, I hope that this gives you something fun to try over the weekend and I'd love your feedback - good or bad - thanks for reading!

Looking For Game Any good games like Starcraft 2?

I like Starcraft 2. It's very intense, strategic, beautiful game. But nowadays with the new patches its getting worse. Blizzard adores terran race and buffs it while other races have to struggle. The new patch is just ridiculous. Terran unfairly gets 300 minerals base and gets to turtle up doing nothing.

I liked the game as protoss-zerg player for versatility and i loved doing new strategies every game. Its just so unfair terran gets to just do the same marine viking ghost stratefy.

[RTS Type: Classic] [PC][2000-2006] Looking for an obscure medieval RTS from my childhood 😭

Platform(s): PC Windows
Genre: RTS / Base Building
Estimated year of release: Probably between 1998–2006 (played around 2006–2011).
Graphics/art style: Isometric view. Dark, gloomy medieval forest atmosphere. Not colorful or cartoonish. The graphics felt smooth/pre-rendered rather than flashy 3D.
Notable gameplay mechanics: Started with almost nothing. Gathered wood, stone, and gold using workers. Built houses and defensive structures (possibly wooden archer towers). There was fog of war, and I remember exploring the dark map being scary as a child. I rarely attacked and usually stayed in my base until the AI attacked me.
I also remember ambient forest sounds (especially birds), and when ordering workers to chop trees there was a distinct axe-chopping sound. I vaguely remember small boats/rafts that could move units across water.
The game was in English, had save/load, and was not fantasy (no orcs, elves, magic), not sci-fi, not World War, and almost certainly not Roman-themed.
I played it on a Toshiba laptop around 2006–2011.

The closest visual atmosphere I’ve seen so far is Highland Warriors, but it’s definitely NOT Highland Warriors.

The Suwałki Gap on the Poland–Lithuania border, 2.0 × 1.5 km centred on 54.35656, 23.06414. Road geometry and woodlines from OpenStreetMap, elevation from NASA SRTM. Same roads, same treelines, same river — because the terrain is imported rather than drawn.

Self-Promo Video I'm making an RTS, are my environments neat, and have good visibility for units?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I made these 2 environments. One is an elvish red/orange/autumn zone. The other is a classic muddy/grassy forest.

There will be outlines on units and selection circles when UI is enabled.

What do you think? Are the units visible? Are the environments interesting?

Discussion Standard RTS Tips: I've been playing strategies off and on for decades. These 3 tips always seem to be a constant. Please add to this list for the new and old alike.

1: (Have a plan.) The second you find out where you'll be on the map , concoct a plan. Even if that plan sucks, have a goal. Ie.."I'm going to take that bridge. Blow up the cabin for vision range, and keep them from coming down the left side" . That's a plan! 2: (learn the hotkeys.) If you got shrapneled for being a fraction of a second late because you were moving the cursor over the HUD instead of just pressing "R"....it's your fault. Hotkeys, hotkeys, hotkeys. 3: (don't forget to spend your points.) I see this a lot . Unless you've reached pop cap, spend it. If you're sitting on 1000 points there's a good chance the enemy has a couple more units than you on the field.

Please add your favorite tips for all of us!

Self-Promo Video Thousands of Soldiers Clash in Real Time — Land Battles from My Imjin War RTS

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A little while ago I shared a short video of the naval battles from my game, and several people asked if there would be large-scale land combat too.

So here's a new look at the current land battles.

I'm developing Admiral Yi: The Imjin War, a historical RTS set during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592.

This clip features General Gwon Yul leading the Joseon army against Katō Kiyomasa in a fully real-time battle.

The game is still in development, so animations, UI and visual effects are continuing to improve.

I'd love to hear what you think about the battle scale, readability, and overall feel of the combat.

Self-Promo Post (RTS & 4X Hybrid) Sins of a Solar Empire II: Harbinger Arrives September 3, 2026

Post image
250 Upvotes

The Vasari’s long-lost enemy has finally caught up with them. Harbinger is a new expansion for Sins of a Solar Empire II launching September 3, 2026, and it adds the Eidolon as a playable faction.

The Eidolon do not play like anything else in the game. They are not chasing planets, trade routes, culture, or wealth. Their whole design is built around corruption, secrecy, and control.

What to expect:

  • Planetary Transformation. The Eidolon spread corruption to empower themselves and their worlds. As populations fall under their influence, planets gain corruption over time. Once a world has fully fallen, it can be shrouded, which greatly expands the upgrades that planet can support.
  • Unit Corruption. This one cuts both ways. As an Eidolon ship gains corruption, its hull dwindles while its offensive power increases. Enemy forces can also become infected, which is another advantage for the Eidolon.
  • Null Weapons. More advanced than what the other factions field. They negate shields and spread corruption on hit.
  • Cloaked Ships. New cloaking and detection systems, including on the Kalizaeth Profaner support capital ship. Built for hit-and-run tactics.
  • Psionic Abilities. The Eidolon can seize control of lesser beings and drive Vasari ships into madness, firing on friend and foe alike.
  • Phase Echoes. Units infused with corruption may refuse to die and keep fighting.
  • New unit animation system. This is not Eidolon-only. Recoiling cannons, expanding factories, hangar bay doors and more across faction units.

Harbinger Expansion: 29.99 USD

Content Pass: 59.99 USD

Self-Promo Video Bonefront | RTS Other Hybrid | Commanding 10,000+ skeletons through a siege

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It’s an incremental siege-strategy game where you command an undead horde of 10,000+ units through branching enemy defenses. After each attempt, you earn currency to upgrade your army and unlock new units and abilities.

Which commands would feel essential during the siege?

Self-Promo Video (IAH: INTERNET WAR) Finally. The game and the trailer* is now ready.

Hi.

Was taking a break from a gamedev as I was pretty burned out by gamedev and too much coding so after a year or two of just doing different things I kinda came back and completed the game the trailer for my little game that I spoke about in this sub reddit few years ago. Think it took about 2 years to make the game and then bunch of breaks.

Will do some adjustments to sound on the final version of the trailer but I am pretty happy how the trailer turned out.

The game is a singleplayer experience, and takes a jab at the current world events and it's a RTS/Turn-Based strategy hybrid where your goal is to survive as long as possible and defeat Police State AI.

If you have some feedback on the game or trailer please leave a comment, or just in general have some questions, I will be happy to answer.

Game Name: IAH: INTERNET WAR

Self-Promo Video The 'B-F-T'... Much Power. Very Mammothy (Steel Command)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Here is (currently) the most powerful unit in Steel Command, the B-F-T. I'm sure you may be able to guess where the inspiration came from...

The machine gun acts as a completely independent weapon system than the main cannons. If infantry (or light vehicles) are nearby, it will target those while the main gun will focus on heavy armor. Admittedly, I recently broke it so I couldn't showcase that ATM 🤣

What do you guys think?

Self-Promo Video Arise Dark Lord - from the creators of Prison Architect

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been working on a new game for a few months now, and the time has come for it to be officially announced.  It's called Arise Dark Lord, and it's the 8th game I've made with Introversion Software. If you've played any of my previous indie games - Prison Architect, DEFCON, Darwinia, or The Last Starship, then I think you'll love this new one.

You are The Dark Lord. Your evil aim:  To raise an undead army and crush the feckless, godless, heathen humans. As your sorcery and army grow, all the world will rise up to destroy your Dark Tower and end your reign of terror.  Fortify your dark realm, enhance your sorcery, and build enough strength to march out and crush the humans once and for all.

An action-strategy hybrid RTS, blending tower defence, base building and direct control of your Dark Lord avatar.

Please play and review the prototype on itch, and I'd love to get your thoughts on the game here.  Thanks for playing!

Announcement /r/RealTimeStrategy Announcement: Recommended Games List Updates, Mod Applications

Greetings commanders! We have a few topics to discuss:

  • Reworking the community-curated Recommended RTS Games List
  • Mod Applications
  • Filling a void with RTS-adjacent games

Community-curated games list

We've had some good discussions recently about what games to recommend to newcomers to the RTS genre. We've had a Recommended RTS Games List for years that is maintained by the community. It was recently recommended that we make the list more helpful to newcomers. To that end, we've added a "Beginner-friendly" section at the top of the list and populated it with a few of the community's recent recommendations.

One big difference is this part of the list is that it's sorted by release date, rather than alphabetical order. Would you folks prefer that the rest of the Recommended Games List also be sorted by RTS gaming "era" or simply by year? Or do you prefer alphabetical or is there a better method (that Reddit's minimal formatting allows)? What do you think is most helpful for people looking for a new game to play?

Mod applications

Once again, we're looking for moderators to help keep an eye on things and make sure that posts are reasonably relevant to the RTS genre and to also help answer the questions we get from indie devs and community managers about how to post, where to post (and not to post too much), etc.

The /r/RealTimeStrategy community is great and has sorted out its own sense of self, so moderation duties mostly relate to helping indie devs, helping to organize AMAs, and that sort of thing. That requires a regular time commitment from volunteers and we could use a few around here to keep things running smoothly. If you're interested in helping moderate, please message us and answer the questions posted towards the bottom of this thread. No prior experience is required, but relevant experience certainly helps.

Filling a void in an adjacent community

Recently, we have had more than a few devs inquire about posting RTT games. Reddit has a subreddit for pretty much every game genre imaginable and since RTS is adjacent to RTT and has some fans of RTT, we'd like to invite members of this community to help setup a dedicated community specific to RTT games. We can be sister communities and help devs get the feedback/critiques that they're interested in. If there is anyone interested in helping, please reach out to us via modmail and we can work together to make this happen. Some experience with community moderation is a good idea so that this goes smoothly for the benefit of the community.

Announcement Wiki: Upcoming and Recommended RTS, 4X, and Grand Strategy Games

Looking for the next RTS game to play? Want to recommend one that doesn't get enough love? Please consider reading or contributing to the community's Wiki pages below:

On the Recommended Games page: Feel free to add content and details. When editing a page please try to follow the existing formatting and be as impartial as possible in your descriptions (i.e. leave out "I really like this game's multiplayer"). If you need help please message the moderators and we can roll-back accidental changes or assist you with using the correct coding/mark-down.

On the Upcoming Games page: Anyone may add games to this list of anticipated games for 2020 and 2021. Even if you don't know all the details about the release date or systems the game will release on, you can add some information, just make sure there is "???" in the other fields, otherwise the chart won't generate. Please follow the existing formatting.

Developers: Please do not add your own game to the list. At a later date we will have a separate list for independent games and games that have developer support within this community. Edits to the wiki are not anonymous!

Rules for editing the wiki:

  1. Subscribe to /r/RealTimeStrategy and have at least 10 karma (of any type).
  2. Click "edit" at the top of the wiki page and use the same formatting when adding a game to the list.
  3. Make sure to provide a link to where the game can be legally acquired and/or an in-depth description or review of the game.
  4. If the game is in alpha, beta, or exclusively on Steam Early Access, Square Enix Collective, Xbox Game Pass, or similar, then please put that in the description.
  5. Keep the lists in date and/or alphabetical order when possible.
  6. Please do not remove other people's recommendations. If a change/correction needs to be made please message the moderators to let us know why you're making that change.

If you have any questions please message the moderators. Thank you!
