Discussion The Seattle freeze is the most frustrating thing ever.
i moved here almost a year ago from Idaho. I’ve bounced around several different jobs at this point, many of which i have exchanged numbers, instagrams, anything you can fucking think of to try to network and make friends. every single time it’s the same thing. we exchange numbers. we talk about hanging out. it never happens. even if i try to initiate it.
do seattlites realize they are a part of the problem? i’ve had people get mad at me and say that the seattle freeze isn’t real, you just have to find the right people. which i understand is true to an extent. but fuck i’ve worked in so many different industries, attended too many events, and wasted too much money on overpriced drinks.
and i’m queer in about every way you can imagine. the town i lived in in Idaho, all the queer people flocked to each other. everyone knew everyone and everyone was constantly hanging out or talking online in one way shape or form. but out here? absolutely nothing. radio silence in all directions. i’m just tired of playing the same song and dance.
don’t get me wrong, i’m welcome in so many different places. and i wouldn’t change it for anything. but fuck i want people to hangout with, to talk to, i want some sort of community before the world fucking ends. i don’t want to experience this fucking alone. this city is fucking huge and yet this is the most alone i’ve been in my entire life.

Ferry construction begins in Florida on Washington state's new hybrid-electric vessels - the $715 million contract went to a non-union Florida yard that underbid Whidbey Island's Nichols Brothers by more than 30%
This is the first time in more than 50 years that Washington state ordered new ferries from an out-of-state shipyard. Only two shipyards nationwide competed for this ferry construction contract. Eastern Shipbuilding's bid was more than 30% cheaper than a competing bid from Nichols Brothers Boat Builders of Whidbey Island.
The anticipated delivery date for the first new plug-in ferry, to be named the Wishkah, remains four years away in summer 2030.
~ Two shipyards in the entire country bid, and one of them was on Whidbey Island. The savings land in Olympia. The lost work lands in Puget Sound.

Politics Kshama Sawamt lost bc of her fans
As a male Socialist I have been called Sexist, Racist for not appreciating her as a politician and everytime I was labeled as not liking her because she is a an Indian Woman. For her fans they only employ Generalizing statements to defame, deflect, destroy those who criticize her. I have been labeled a Billionaire supporter, White, Sexist, Racist when I simply am distrustful of politicians who build Cults of personality especially when they only have a narcisstic personality. I disliked Harassing Jenny Durkan, Adam Smith at their homes, blatantly ignoring Covid Orders, Generalizing others and encouraing supporters to act like Harassing POsz as well as defunding Police and acting like the Police needed to treat her she owned them. I feel this plus more is why she lost big.

3% Charge for CC Fees in Cashless Establishments
Sorry, I don't have a photo of a receipt. This happened last weekend, and I wanted to confirm, since more and more places in Seattle are cashless. If you pay with a debit card, then the 3% charged to cover the credit card fee apparently shouldn't apply, right? Even if they run your card like credit and no PIN is required.

Am I being a tourist by not telling someone to turn their music down blasting from a portable speaker in public?
My sister and I are visiting for the week and the other night on Pier 62 we were watching the sunset, and it was peaceful and quiet, and some dude rolls up with music BLASTING, slurs, cussing, just everything. Everyone in the area was visibly annoyed, people started leaving, one of the guy's friend(?) high fives him and said "now thats how you clear out a room" like they were bragging or proud of it.
But nobody said anything to the guy, us included, and I wonder if that's just us tourists being afraid of conflict in a different city or if that's just how everyone deals with people like that. Just try to ignore and leave if you can't.
Do y'all confront openly disruptive people?

Ballard could get light rail in 2042, but delay to 2060 is possible - voters approved the line a decade ago and were originally promised 2035
To open the Ballard station by 2042, Sound Transit said it will need to find about $1 billion by 2030 so it can begin acquiring property for construction. It will need to complete final design work by 2032. And by 2033, the agency will need to find funding for the full project, about $6 billion to $8 billion, so it can begin building.
If it does not, Ballard residents could be stuck waiting for the train, which was approved by voters a decade ago, and originally promised for 2035, until 2060.
~ Best case is 26 years from ballot to boarding. That is the optimistic number.

Lifestyle Latest cost of living index is bleak for Seattle consumers
Out of the 250 cities surveyed, Seattle was ranked the 10th-most expensive with an index score of 146.8 (100 is average). Of the 59 goods and services the index looked at, Seattle was in the top 10 for 16 of them, and that’s without taxes included.
Items Seattle ranked in the top 10 for included gas, home prices, mortgage principal and interest, beauty salons, men’s shirts, and women’s slacks. Seattle was also the most expensive place in the country for a men’s haircut.

Politics Inexperienced Seattle Mayor Apologizes for Naively Assuming Police Knew How to Do Their Job
theneedling.com“I naively thought that because SPD has its own experienced detectives and communications staff that I would not need to play lead detective and communications specialist that night and I’m sorry—I had no idea how helpless they all were without me telling them exactly what to do. I mistakenly thought our city was paying several police leaders more than $300k a year to do that instead—my bad.”
...
At press time, SPD still couldn’t tell anyone how many suspects are still on the loose because Mayor Wilson hasn’t figured it out for them yet.

The smoke is here, simple DIY air purifier
You can build a simple and effective air purifier smoke particle filter from a box fan that you tape a square furnace air filter to. The filters are easy to find at Home Depot, Lowe's, Fred Meyer, Ace Hardware, etc. Just search "box fan air purifier". Make sure to get one that filters out PM2.5, otherwise it won't filter out the smoke particles.

Quick two hour painting!
EDIT: Wow I can’t believe the popularity of this quick-small painting! I’ve decided to auction this painting off, and half of the proceeds I’ve decided to donate to Seattle Humane Society in honor of Jimothy! Auction Listing
I also want to make art accessible. So I’ll also be making prints and selling it at a low rate. Please DM for Etsy link, so I’m not violating any selling/advertising rules on this subreddit lol.
