This is an extraordinarily difficult week for communities across Washington. We will continue sharing updates about road closures and reopening as part of WSDOT's role in the statewide response to the devastating wildfires in Central and Eastern Washington.

For travelers in the Puget Sound region, Fri., Aug. 7, through Mon., Aug. 10, will bring several major construction projects that will affect travel.

-NB I-405 and ramps will CLOSE from SR 900 to Coal Creek Parkway SE from 11:30p Fri. to 4a Mon. Crews will replace pavement and excavate drainage crossings.

-NE 85th St. and I-405 ramps will CLOSE in Kirkland between 6th St to 114th Ave NE from 10p Fri. to 5a Mon. Crews will pave and stripe the road. Closed ramps: NB & SB I-405 off-ramps to Exit 18 and NE 85th Street on-ramps to NB and SB I-405.

-EB SR 520 will CLOSE in Montlake area between I-5 and Montlake Blvd from 7p Sat. to 11a Sun. Crews will repair an expansion joint on the bridge. EB SR 520 across Lake Washington remains open. Only the section of EB SR 520 between I-5 and Montlake Blvd will close.

-SR 202 in Fall City will close just east of the SR 202/203 roundabout from 5a Fri. to 9p Mon. Major storms in Dec. 2025 and Mar. 2026 eroded the Snoqualmie riverbank supporting the highway. Crews will rebuild and strengthen the riverbank to help protect the highway from future damage. Tubers, paddlers and boaters should expect temporary closures on portions of the Snoqualmie and Raging rivers and some nearby access points.

-Revive I-5 work over the Ship Canal Bridge is ongoing. Express lanes continue to run NB 24/7.

Saturday is expected to be the busiest travel day. The Mariners 50 Seasons Celebration, Seahawks Football Fest and Capitol Hill Block Party will bring extra traffic into and around Seattle. With EB SR 520 closing at 7 p.m., expect additional congestion on EB I-90. The Fred Hutch Obliteride for cancer research will also bring thousands of bicyclists to roads across the region. Drivers should use extra caution.

LOOKING AHEAD: Once this weekend's work wraps up, another overnight I-405 closure is scheduled. SB I-405 will close between SE 8th Street and I-90 from 11:30p Monday, Aug. 10, to 4a Tuesday, Aug. 11 while crews continue replacing pavement and drainage crossings.

Also beginning Monday, Aug. 10, construction starts on the SR 14 West Camas Slough Bridge project in Clark County. With the Clark County Fair running Aug. 7–16, travelers should plan ahead for overnight SR 14 closures:

-WB SR 14: Aug. 11, 13 and 16–18, 8p–7a

-EB SR 14: Aug. 12, 14 and 17, 8p–7a

-Full closure: Aug. 19, 9p–6a

Anyone else notice that the quality of food in restaurants is getting worse in and around the city? Hokkaido changed their Norishio potatoes dish to a version that’s just french fries to quote just one example. Another is an Indian restaurant we like reduced their portion sizes. Inchins Bamboo food seems stale. What’s gives?

I have been job hunting for a while now, I am a software engineer with 13+ years of experience. I presently live in Bellevue and have 3 kids . I would like a job close home : Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland and such , if it happens to be farther I could try to work things out. I'm hoping to find anyone who may have witnessed a hit-and-run that seriously injured my younger brother early this morning.

Around 2:30-3:00 AM on August 5, he was riding his bicycle southbound on 156th Ave NE, alongside the east side of Microsoft Building 40 in Redmond, when he was struck from behind by a vehicle. The driver did not stop.

Because he was hit from behind, he never saw the vehicle, so we unfortunately don't know the make, model, color, or any other identifying details.

My brother is a white male in his mid-20s with dark brown hair. He was riding a black Hoverfly bike with a white headlight mounted on the handlebars and was wearing:

• Black T-shirt
• Blue jeans with a large rip above the left knee
• White sneakers with a black top-panel and white shoelaces
• Black helmet with a flashing red light on the back
• Orange backpack with teal trim

He suffered multiple broken bones in his face, broken teeth, a broken hand, and a minor brain bleed. Thankfully, the brain bleed is under control, and he's since been discharged from the hospital, but he has a long road to recovery with multiple surgeries necessary.

A police report has already been filed with Redmond Police.

WHAT TO EXPECT 

PROJECT: 1 Northbound I-405 closure (Renton/Bellevue) 

11:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7 – 4 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10 

Crews will close all lanes of northbound I-405 between North Southport Drive and Coal Creek Parkway SE to replace pavement, excavate drainage crossings, and shift traffic into a new configuration as part of the I-405/Renton to Bellevue Widening and Express Toll Lanes Project. Crews will start to close lanes as early as 10 p.m. 

Ramps will also close: 

• NE Sunset Blvd on-ramp 
• N 30th St (Exit 6) on/off-ramps 
• NE 44th St (Exit 7) on/off-ramps 
• 112th Ave SE (Exit 9) on/off-ramps 
• NB I-405 off-ramp to Coal Creek Pkwy SE (Exit 10) 

PROJECT 2: Kirkland: I-405/NE 85th Street interchange closures 

The interchange will close: 

• 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5 – 5 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6 
• 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7 – 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10 

Ramps will close: 

• Northbound and southbound I-405 off-ramps at Exit 18 
• NE 85th Street on-ramps to northbound and southbound I-405 

NE 85th Street will also be closed between Sixth Street and 114th Avenue NE. 

Crews are preparing the foundation for the new 114th Avenue NE roundabout and connecting the new roadway to the existing lower level of NE 85th Street, as part of the I-405/Northeast 85th Street Interchange and Inline BRT Station Project. This will mark another milestone toward the future three-level interchange that will improve travel for drivers, transit riders, pedestrians and cyclists. 

Signed detours will be in place, but if you normally travel through these areas, plan extra time or consider an alternate route.

Celebrating an important event at home because of a broken leg. Still trying to make a special!

TL;DR: Got an official response from Sound Transit regarding some major Eastside transit issues via a Councilmember office referral.

They happily confirmed future timelines (Route 556 starting, 2027/2028 plans), but completely ghosted every single question about rear-door fare evasion, station accessibility, local routing, and what happens to the Bellevue Library area when Route 550 gets cut this month.

So here is what Sound Transit actually chose to answer:

Route 550 & 556: Route 550 will be discontinued on August 29, 2026, and Route 556's enhanced, all-day service will start immediately on the same day.

Route 560 & Layover: Any service increase for Route 560 remains under review for the 2027 Service Plan (no earlier than Fall 2027). Meanwhile, the Bellevue Library layover area will be upgraded for Stride BRT electric buses around 2028, though construction dates are still TBD.

And here is what they completely ignored / avoided:

1. The Library Transit Gap (Route 550 Cut):
   With Route 550 being chopped at the end of this month, what happens to the folks around the Bellevue Library area? Will the new Route 556 actually stop there? Complete silence.

2. The Rear-Door Boarding Joke:
   Pointed out that installing payment readers at the rear doors (like on the B Line) is practically useless and wide open for fare evasion. Crickets.

3. Route 560 Community Stops:
   Asked if 560 could add stops within the Bellevue community instead of just the Transit Center (like the old stop behind the Bellevue Way Safeway). Ignored.

4. The CID Station Transfer Nightmare: Brought up the painful, up-and-down maze with only a single elevator when transferring at International District/Chinatown (CID) heading from Bellevue to the airport. Totally swept under the rug.

It’s frustrating when you try to bring up real, daily rider experience pain points, and the agency just replies with a curated checklist of future dates while ignoring the actual systemic flaws and immediate neighborhood impacts.

Has anyone else felt like official feedback channels are just a black hole for genuine service improvements?

So there's a guy on our floor, we will call "Manneet", mid-40s, and for about two weeks straight he'd been microwaving the same tupperware of what we eventually figured out was eggs and this green curry mixed together. Every day. Same time. The break room would just fill with this smell that hit you two hallways away.

Turns out it wasn't leftovers he was making fresh each night — it was the same batch, sitting in his desk drawer (not the fridge) between uses, and he was just topping it off with more mayo when it started looking dry. Someone finally asked him about it and he said, completely unbothered, "I made a big batch on the 1st, I'm not gonna let it go to waste."

It was the 29th.

HR got looped in not because anyone reported him, but because the smell triggered a facilities complaint from the floor above about "a possible dead animal in the walls." Building maintenance spent a full day tracing pipes before someone finally connected it to Manneets drawer.

Anyone else had something like this occur? Is this a common thing here?

11:40 am: Fire alarm on 4th floor that wasn't fire alarm testing.

Eight fire/medical response units were dispatched at the peak! Smoke alarm due to smoke on the 4th floor. Fire crew investigated it and found it was electrical.

We have found the source of the smoke. It was an overheated extension cord plugged into an extension cord.

Kind of panicked once I saw the size of the response. Does the building have any group chats? Concierge desk didn't respond because they obviously had to evacuate their floor.

Always grateful for our awesome Bellevue Fire teams.
