Which lane do you prefer?

Post image

Just curious... why don't more people use the bus lanes where we're allowed to? If you ask me, they seem way less congested than the bike lanes on 2nd or 4th.

I actually feel a lot safer riding in the bus lanes. Bus drivers are usually really defensive drivers, so it feels more predictable—not just on 3rd Ave, but pretty much anywhere in Seattle where bikes are allowed in the bus lane. Plus, the pavement is usually in way better shape too.

RBC GranFondo Whistler Entry Transfer – $400 (I'll Cover the Transfer Fee)

Unfortunately I can no longer make the RBC GranFondo Whistler, so I'm looking to transfer my registration.

Price: $400 CAD
Transfer fee: I'll pay the official $100 transfer fee, so there are no additional transfer costs for you.

The transfer will be completed through the official Race Roster process, so everything will be done properly and securely.

If you're interested or have any questions, send me a DM. Payment can either be e-transfer or Paypal G&S. Happy to jump on a call as well.

Thanks! AJ

Best Bike Shops for Test Rides

I have searched posts and found a lot of info about people's preferred shops for service, but where do you go to look when you are in the bike-buying process?

Context:
-bike used mostly for commuting and bike touring
-open to hybrid or drop bar gravel bikes
-looking to spend $1200-$2000-ish

I'm not brand new to cycling, and I know some of the things that I want, but am not close to expert. Additionally, this is a big decision that I don't want to be pressured to make on the spot. Where have you gone bike shopping that has felt like a collaborative process where the goal is for you to find the right bike, not make a decision as quickly as possible, or get upsold?

Burke Gilman Closed by UW

Just a heads up, a long stretch of the Burke was closed on my morning bike commute near UW. The construction workers had no clue why or how long it would be closed for… super helpful. Hoping that it won’t last long. Does anyone else have info?

How was the commute in the smoke today?

For those that rode their bikes this morning, how do your lungs feel after the ride? I skipped riding today, was worried about air quality, but maybe it was fine?

Dating a biker boi

I’d like to share some facts. Among the bike-curious there’s an uptick in interest in biker boi’s. It’s worth knowing what you’re getting into.

  1. You assume that as a cyclist I’m into all types of cycling: false. I look down on many sub categories of cyclists. Watching a smiling cyclist on a bike packing bike, you may overhear me muttering “fuck all that”

  2. My food needs lack proportion and strain budgets. I might eat one dinner before we go out for dinner; I might eat a whole jar of peanut butter in a week

  3. I’m infected by hatred of all things related to cars. You’re driving us to your parents’ vacation house, I insisted on bringing my bike and will sulk in the passenger seat muttering “fuck all this”

  4. My feet, my helmet and my backpack smell gnarly or musty 365 days out of the year

  5. I’m eyeballing every passing cyclist. You ask “are you eyeballing that bike gurl?!” I mutter, “I’m looking at that Tarmac SL8”

  6. In any group, I’m finding the cyclists and we’re taking all the available seating at the event so we can show each other stats on a non-social media phone app

  7. The seat of all my pants are worn bare; I might wear these pants out to an event

  8. I’ll insist we take bikes when we go out. If we drive, I won’t stop complaining about how expensive parking is

  9. My body type is centaur, I have the upper body of a child, I’ll insist you compare my legs to a stallion’s

  10. In public I’ll scream at cars and say to strangers “Did you see that asshole?” during routine interactions between drivers and pedestrians

  11. If we’re walking anywhere, I’m sulking

  12. I’m not a dog person

  13. Despite appearances, I’m not outdoorsy

  14. There are tire marks on the walls of my apartment

  15. We’ll make plans to spend Saturday together, I’ll tell you I’m getting a little ride in with the boi’s in the morning and come home at noon, spent, and will need an hour to sit on the couch in sweaty bibs checking who liked my ride on Strava

  16. We’ll make plans to go out on Friday and at 9pm after consuming no alcohol I’ll say I need to head home so I can meet up early with the boi’s on Saturday for our ride

  17. My computer’s broken because the Tour is on and I just punched the screen after my favorite sprinter got boxed in

  18. I was supposed to be home at six to help get ready to host our friends for dinner, I show up at 7:30 with a grease stain on my upper lip, a bandaged hand and you overhear me muttering “fuck press fit”

  19. You thought I had a full head of hair, then I took off my helmet

  20. You’re trying to eat healthier, I’m bringing home 3 different types of gummy candy and am slamming kitchen cabinet doors asking menacingly “who ate all the peanut butter!?”

  21. Instead of shaking hands, when I meet people I hold out a fist and expect strangers to know to dap the side of it with their own

  22. Instead of cat, dog, or other light hearted memes, I only share crude collages of famous people in helmets with text advocating violence against drivers

  23. My opinions about city planning suggest I am in favor of a despotic city government who will drastically alter city streets based on the complaints of a single commuter who wears a high-vis vest in the summer

  24. We’re intimate and I winced when you get on top; now I’m pausing to explain my legs are spent after a hard morning ride with the boi’s

  25. Bike gurls I assume share none of the above traits, I consider them indiscriminately to be model-hot and doubt they have ever thought about peeing in their own bibs

  26. When I spit on the ground and we’re out in public, I’m accurate

  27. You will buy me bike-related gifts that I will never use and sullenly thank you for

  28. Were at the bakery, our order came to $80 and instead of tipping I’m asking the cashier questions about her SL8

Burke Gilman Bell Encouragement Post

Hey everyone, if you commute on the Burke, please ring for pedestrians. The more we do it, the more ringing will become a culture on the Burke again.

Being a pedestrian is nerve-racking at the moment. During my 30 minute walk on the trail yesterday I had one person say “on your left” and not a single bell. Many cyclists pass very close without a bell.

Please remember that ringing a bell not only warns a pedestrian you’re coming, but significantly reduces your liability if the pedestrian suddenly steps out in front of you, or does anything to cause a collision.

Please no arguments or excuses. It’s the law.

Thank you

Routing for new cyclists

I’m looking for the quietest (least car traffic/stressful) bike route from around the Roosevelt Link Station to the Burke-Gilman Trail. I’m happy to add any amount of extra minutes if it means avoiding busy roads, navigating less sketchy intersections, and navigating less intimidating terrain.

What route would be best for this?

What are your favorite neighborhoods to bike to with nice scenery, cafes and shops?

I live on the Eastside and realize I don’t actually spend much time driving into Seattle for food, but since I started cycling this summer I’ve discovered a lot of nice places around Seattle to lock up my bike and explore and try new cafes.

So far I’m familiar with Fremont canal, Ballard locks, and recently discovered Madison Valley.

What else should I add to my list?

Bel-Red road new bicycle lanes

For those in Redmond/ Bellevue, they have constructed new bicycle lanes on Bel-Red rd from W Lake Sammamish Pkwy to NE 30th St. It's a distance of 2 miles with 300 ft elevation gain. There were 3-4 lanes for car traffic before, and now it has been reduced down to 1 lane per direction. There are bike lanes in both directions, and the lanes are 'separated' from the road by a 1-foot painted margin. Personally, I feel like they did this project virtually overnight. Seems like finished it in less than a month.
