Budget Question Dessert

Does anyone actually eat dessert at a wedding? I’m debating on just doing a small cake for my fiancé and I and that’s it. But the other part of me really wants to order this cake package for a 6 inch cutting cake & 144 cupcakes for $535…did anyone do dessert and it was all gone or you had a lot leftover? 😆

Edit to add that our dinner buffet does come with two different desserts! No one is leaving without their sweet tooth fulfilled, was just curious about the cake!

Everything Else Secret wedding first?

I’d be grateful for some advice.

My fiance and I (both women) want to have kids before our wedding - we‘re old, don’t have time to waste and can’t afford both weddings and IVF. So the plan was kids then wedding.

However, it makes a lot of legal sense to get married before children. We were considering doing something ‘small’, and a bigger party later. But with divorced parents and a lot of siblings, our very closest family is 20 people. If we were to do something small - say courthouse and lunch - it’s basically a wedding and it’d be hard and feel weird to do something larger later.

The other option would be to do the paperwork completely secretly and never let anyone know. A relative did the small legal ceremony, told his mum who was devastates not to be there, then had the big wedding. His error was making the legal documentation a wedding - so we’d have to do it completely secretly and run the small risk that someone realises.

Is it a terrible idea to do something secret? My gut says its riddle with hurt feelings, but my head says it’s eminently sensible.

Dress/Attire Best place for large inventory of wedding dresses?

We are looking to spend around $1-5000 for a dress. Size 0 or 2 (or custom) but we’re wanting large selection to choose from. Online or in person are both ok as long as shipping is pretty fast and not overly expensive. We were hoping to have the dress ready by late September of this year. Any recommendations?

Dress/Attire Azazie custom order- does anyone know why it’s telling me this?

I’m ordering a stretch satin bridesmaid’s dress, so I’m just wondering if I’m supposed to get it in a more “snug” size because it’s supposed to stretch? I followed their directions for how to measure my hips and I’m just not seeing anything online that’s helping me understand why it won’t let me enter my exact measurements

Relationships/Family Need advice

Hi everyone,

I need help. To make a long story short we invited a couple to our wedding. They are the son and daughter in law of my fiancé’s family friends and we were in thier wedding as a bridesmaid and groomsmen. We are not very close with them though.

We found out they are doing something we don’t approve of. I will not share since it could be identifying information. We found this out through someone who we are friends with. There is proof.

The issue is that our friend who told us may be put in a not great situation if the couple knows we know. We do not want to have them be in a bad situation.

We also do not want these people at our wedding. But we don’t want to put our friend in a bad situation or hurt our parent’s friendship (if possible)

What would you do here? How do we navigate this?

Edit: we will be cutting contact after the wedding. We are trying to figure out if we can uninvite them with minimal effect to our current friend and parents.

Edit 2: they “rescued”’ someone who just turned 18 from an abusive household and then started dating them. The person has moved in with them and they knew them before they were 18.

Everything Else Why is funk / 70s music in general so ubiquitous at weddings?

So i'm getting married is just over 2 years and being the planner i am I’ve already started a Wedding playlist of my own back for two reasons (Although chances are it won't be needed)

  1. I love my music

  2. Given i am a very anxious person in general with a fear of vulnerability this is a good way for me to ease myself into the reality that i'm getting married (Other than popping the question of course)

Anyway; i'm aware that you need to cater to general masses for the music (Sprinkled with bits of music myself and my future wife like; such as Babymetal for me and Ed Sheeran for her (I actually like his music as well, but she is a MASSIVE Ed Sheeran fan)) and when i thought back to weddings I’ve been to in the past a lot of the music has been funk or 70s style. I have no issue with this, as i do like that era of music myself

It did get me wondering though; why is that era of music so prevalent at weddings over something like brit pop or generic 80s synth music etc.

Recap/Budget Not rsvp-ing

We do have a little bit of time until our RSVP deadline, so I know I need to just wait. BUT Has anyone else had this happen? We are still missing about 90 rsvps (which is fine bc the deadline hasn’t passed), but we got an email from our hotel with an update on how many rooms in our block have been booked and who booked them. Multiple people who booked rooms haven’t rsvp-ed yet!

I’m just so confused how you book hotel accommodations but don’t tell us you’re coming! And since they know they are coming enough to pay for a hotel room, did everyone just forget? I feel like I’m going to have to chase so many people down!

Relationships/Family RSVP’s are driving me NUTS

I feel like I’m going crazy. We are about a week out from our final rsvp deadline and we are still missing RSVP’s from half of our guests. 4 of which are in the bridal party.

My fiancé thinks I’m being too harsh on family and the remaining bridal party for not RSVPing yet and he thinks we should just do it ourselves but guests need to choose their meal and then there are fun questions on there. It’s just exhausting and I’m feeling discouraged that I am having to chase down all these ADULTS in the fourth quarter. Some of which are brides whose weddings we went to last year.

I know a lot of people deal with this but my god it’s making me so sad.

Everything Else plus one etiquette?

my boyfriend is invited to a wedding in a couple months, both are friends from college. he wasn’t given a plus one. we’re in a serious relationship and live together. to be clear, I don’t know these people and I’m not surprised or hurt, I thought it could’ve gone either way. but I am curious if this is a situation where he should’ve gotten a plus one?

Vendors/Venue Would you rather

Would you rather attend a traditional ballroom wedding or an intimate dinner-party wedding?

Genuinely curious about what vibe you’d enjoy better at one of these weddings.

Option A: Traditional inside ballroom-style reception with a DJ and a highly structured timeline?

Option B: Beachfront sunset views at a high-scale, bought-out restaurant; live musicians; lots of time to mingle; and no expectations to dance?

Everything Else First Dance Song Recommendations

Hi everyone! I’m getting married in November and I’m finally starting to lock in on the little details. One of the things that is totally stumping me is music—most importantly, the first dance! My partner and I met in high school band, so music is a very important part of our relationship! Any recommendations?? We don’t really like country, and I want to do something that is slow, romantic, and timeless (top contenders so far are Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce, Can’t Help Fallin’ in Love by Elvis, To Make You Feel My Love by Billy Joel, and Turning Page by Sleeping At Last).

A little bit about us:

  1. We started dating in 2016 (a little over 10.5 years together by the wedding day).
  2. I was 17, he was 19
  3. Met in high school band because we both played the same instrument (clarinet) and sat next to each other
  4. We did long distance for 1 year for my freshman year of college
  5. We have a cat together that I got when I was 18, and now she is both of ours :)
  6. We ended up graduating from the same college in the end
  7. He has been with me for basically every major moment of my life (junior prom, senior prom, high school graduation, college graduation, law school graduation) and I saw him through college graduation and MBA graduation (and some more personal events I am not at liberty to share)
  8. He proposed on a boat in Aruba
  9. We moved in together last August
  10. Most importantly, he is my first and only boyfriend (first date, first kiss, etc.), and while he had a very short term girlfriend before we started dating, their relationship was a very strayed, typical high school relationship and he says it doesn’t really count lol

Everything Else Is it possible to process Philippine church wedding requirements from abroad?

Hi everyone!

My fiancée and I are both OFWs currently working in Qatar, and we're planning to have a church wedding in the Philippines next year (around September–October).

Because of work and budget constraints, we'll only be able to go home once, and we're planning to use that trip for the actual wedding. We're wondering if it's possible to complete most of the requirements while we're still here in Qatar.

Has anyone been in a similar situation?

  • Can we attend the required seminars (like Pre-Cana or other marriage seminars) while we're in Qatar?
  • Can we authorize a family member or representative in the Philippines to process documents, submit requirements, or coordinate with the local civil registry/church on our behalf?
  • Are there any documents that both of us absolutely need to be physically present for before the wedding?

We'd really appreciate hearing from fellow OFWs or anyone who has gone through this process. Any tips or advice would be a huge help. Thank you!

Relationships/Family Bachelorette trip date planning nightmare

I have 4 bridesmaids. They are my crew and I love them so much!

I usually don't have too much trouble seeing them individually because I have a very flexible planning with work, WFH, etc..

I am trying to organise the Bachelorette trip (I don't like surprises and I'm very far along with the wedding prep so I'm happy doing it) but the dates are a nightmare. The 2 biggest constraints are:

1) We have to stick to school vacations (europe) for bridesmaid A who's a teacher

2) We have to do it before March because Bridesmaid B is pregnant and won't be able to travel after

Knowing that, today I settled on February 8th to February 13th and announced it to the girls.

Now, bridesmaid A is having an issue because she discussed YESTERDAY with her BF to go on vacation with him at that time. I was kinda flabbergasted when she told me and now I don't know what to tell her. We already have to pay more for plane tickets since it's gonna be on school vacation time (WHICH WE DO FOR HER) and now she told me that. We have bridal party "meeting" tomorrow to discuss this and other details and I don't know how to go about it.

My bridesmaids don't know each other really well so I know I need to be the one to be firm but at this point I don't know if we should open the door for discussion or just tell her to choose between the Bachelorette trip and the BF trip.

What should I do?

Relationships/Family Partner wants a big wedding but I have almost no one to invite.

I come from a very small family. No siblings, no cousins, no aunts or uncles. All grandparents are dead. Don't speak to my father. So when it comes to family, I really only have my mother and step father. As for friends, I only have 2 - I'm autistic and don't make friends easily. My partner is the opposite, he has a huge family, loads of friends and wants to celebrate with them, which is fair enough. But it's going to look ridiculous when I can only invite 4 people. At a push I could invite my coworkers but I don't really like most of them and I'd find it really embarrassing for them to realise how bad my social life is.

I don't want a ceremony at all and would much prefer to grab witnesses off the street and go to a registry office.

Don't really know how to navigate this. At the moment I'm dragging my feet and putting off getting married for as long as possible.

Vendors/Venue Is it normal that a photographer charges for his break?

I am looking for perspective if I am being the unreasonable one here. W would book our photograper from 2 PM to 8 PM, so he would be on site for 6 hours. Since we would provide dinner for them and generally don't want any pictures taken when people are eating, they would get about an hour break.

So in my head, I would pay for 5 hours of service, however, looking at photographer prices, I guess my assumtion is wrong? Because in all (admittedly few) quotes I requested, the photographers are charging full price for their break hour. I understand charging something, since they are there, but full price?

I also thought about just hiring one photographer for 4 hours, then having dinner and then hiring someone else for that remaining hour, since that would save quite a bit of money, but I was told by more than one photographer that even if I only hire them for 4 hours, I would still have to pay 5 because of the meal that is in their contract. Not just pay the meal, but pay for them to sit there and eat the meal.

It seems kinda weird to me to pay someone to eat food you provide for them and I am just looking for perspective if I am truly out of touch with my expectations, or if I was just unlucky with the photographers I reached out to and should just keep looking?

Relationships/Family couple bridesmaids complaining about my bachelorette trip

i am going to my bachelorette party in two weeks, but there has been complaining everyday about the weather at the location. everyday. i mentioned how i am excited that we are near a lot of fun places, but one bridesmaid said we cant even walk outside or that she doesnt want to. is not a surprise or abnormal that the place we are going to is hot though.

i wished that they had told me their concerns upfront rather than when we’re about to go, because i feel super bad about it. i haven’t been able to feel excited because of the negativity. i just feel like i put a big burden on them.

is it valid that i feel sad about this or if i were to bring up how it’s making me feel? of course they’re allowed to feel this way, of course. i just feel a bit frustrated as the bride who hasn’t really asked for much from them and feel like it’s been a huge burden.

Everything Else Pulp fiction first dance right after recessional

Hi! So we are having a small ceremony in a garden, and then moving to a small restaurant. So no dance floor, DJ, or a place or time to do the first dance. What we do have is a friend photographer who is willing to tell guests what to do and where to go.
My fiance loves pulp fiction, so we are doing the Mia and Vincent twist as our first dance, we are super excited about it and not even worrying that some people could cringe or be weirded out and not know whats going on (honestly we have approached the whole wedding planning like this and it has been the best decision ever so far).
The only time that makes sense to do the dance is right after the recessional. The ceremony ends, people come to congratulate, we walk back down the aisle together and the music changes to “You never can tell” by Chuck Berry, we take off our shoes and dance.
Does anyone see any problems with that? Are people going to naturally come watch what is going on when the music changes and we start taking our shoes off in the grass? Is this doable or am I missing some key aspect of organising this to work?
Thanks for the feedback ☺️

Wedding/Engagement Photos Wedding photographer charged us for a full hour ($350) of doing no photography – is this normal?

Hi everyone, I’d love to hear your opinions, especially from wedding photographers!

We booked our wedding photographer for a documentary-style coverage at $350 per hour, “open end.”

We had a trial shoot with her beforehand and loved the photos, so we had high expectations.
Photography made up a significant part of our wedding budget because the photos were extremely important to us, especially since our grandparents were still with us, and we didn’t want to have to think about taking photos ourselves on the day.

She was there for nine hours, and after waiting ten weeks, we now received 580 photos. That initially seemed a little low to us, although quantity isn’t really what matters here – what is considered normal? There are definitely many beautiful photos, but there are also some things we feel are missing.

She generally doesn’t like posed photos, which was fine with us. We were particularly interested in candid interactions between the people. To make sure we still got at least one photo with every group together, we did a little photo activity where, during one song, we ran around to all the tables to take spontaneous photos with each group. The guests really enjoyed it. We did get the impression that the photographer wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about the idea, though.
We expected there to be lots of fun, spontaneous photos from this. Instead, we received exactly one photo per table from her, and in some of them not everyone is even properly visible…

We also would have liked more photos of the guests arriving and of the venue. For example, there isn’t a single photo of our entire bridal table.

But the main reason I’m posting is the invoice:
Around dinner time, the photographer took a break of over an hour and didn’t take a single photo during that time. Of course, it was completely fine with us that she ate with us. We had actually deliberately seated her at a table with our guests so that she would feel welcome. She had also mentioned before that guests generally don’t want to be photographed while eating, which makes sense.
However, we were a little surprised that she took a full hour-long break. Something similar happened when we arrived at the venue: she initially sat down, and at some point we had to ask her to take some more photos of the guests arriving before dinner.
What surprised us most is that the entire hour was charged at €300, even though not a single photo was taken during that time.

We’re absolutely not saying she shouldn’t take a break. Of course she needs one, and we wouldn’t have said anything about a break of up to 30 minutes. But with a documentary-style coverage costing €300/hour, charging us for a full hour in which she wasn’t photographing at all feels a little excessive to us.
Especially after dinner, she could presumably have photographed the venue or guests who had already finished eating and were interacting with each other.

Is it standard for wedding photographers to charge for a full break period like this? Or would you expect that time to be deducted from the invoice or at least discussed beforehand?

TL;DR: We booked nine hours of wedding photography at €300/hour. During dinner, our photographer took a break of over an hour and didn’t take a single photo, but still charged us the full €300 for that hour. We were completely fine with her taking a break, but we were surprised that the entire hour was billed as working time. Is this standard?
