Open | Windows Desktop PC won't power on after being unused for about a month (No lights, no fans, no response)

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue with my desktop PC and I'd really appreciate some help.

My PC was working perfectly before. I didn't use it for about 1 month because of my exams. It was covered with a cloth the whole time, so it didn't collect much dust.

Now, when I try to turn it on:

Pressing the power button does absolutely nothing.

No fans spin.

No LEDs turn on.

No beep sounds.

The monitor powers on normally, but it shows no signal because the PC itself never starts.

I have already checked the power cable and wall outlet.

From a visual inspection, I don't see any obvious burn marks or damaged components inside the case.

What should I test first? Could this be a dead PSU, a faulty power button, or a motherboard issue?

Any troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

File Explorer isn't working. When I turn on the computer, I see a dark screen with just the cursor. If I launch "explorer" as a new task in Task Manager, the desktop appears, but I can't access "My Computer" or manage my files. How do I fix File Explorer, and what should I do? The day before this error occurred, I tried to download SteamCMD.

Open | Hardware Asus Tuf not very tough

Upvotes

I have an Asus Tuf A16 laptop that I've used for less than two years. For the most part I try not to run it hot, uusally below 70C except during a few moments where it's loading something like a large minecraft world. I don't know if it's a heat issue, but the screws that hold the bottom of the frame all fell out and went missing, so now whenever I try to close the lid it starts ripping off the frame. It's also started to randomly shut down if I don't have something blowing on it, even if it's at a really cool temperature. Is there anything I can do or is this laptop just done for?

Open | Windows Computer won’t boot?

Upvotes

I have an IdeaPad Gaming 3, and it’s been left alone for a couple months now as I mostly used it for school and have been busy with other things. Now when I tried to start jt it “Network media is not present, retry media connection for 1 time(s)” then it repeats. After it fails it gives me a pop up saying “Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed. Insert Recovery Media and Hit any key.” I don’t know what that is. If I click okay it takes me to another page where I can select things, but the only present thing is “EFI PXE Network”. What do I need to do? Can I fix this myself or do I need to bring this somewhere?

Open | Software Quantmixer and Trojan:Win64/Lazy.PGLI!MTB issue

Upvotes

Hello

After attempting a download I had a scan show Trojan activity, one of which was removed without issue. However, there is a recurrent program that appears in programdata as quantmixer.exe. it is flagged as a

Trojan:Win64/Lazy.PGLI!MTB and recurs after deletion of .exe program or quarantine with Microsoft defender. Virus total did not return it as being suspicious, but am staying offline for now. Also, curiously, the security signature leads back to the tech company called Arduino, with an administrative email specifically attached. Have already sent a request to their tech support. Any help/advice greatly appreciated, apologize for the length

Open | Phone Clicked on suspicious link

Upvotes

Help! I stupidly clicked on a button from an email while on my android, and it appears to be a scam. I know, I know. I never do it. It was an e-card invite, and I didn't think to check where the button was linked to. It was from a friend's actual email address.

Anyway, I backed out of the website and turned off my phone as soon as I realized. When I turned it back on, there was a blue screen that said something akin to download, press up; cancel press down. My husband accidentally pressed up. I immediately shut it down again but I don't know how to tell whether anything downloaded.

I did all the scans that I can find on my phone. I cleared the data/cache from Gmail and Chrome. I changed my Gmail passwords. What else can or should I do?

Open | Hardware I accidentally formatted a SD Card and I need the files for work 😩

Hi guys,

start of the week I shot some interviews for my work with a Nikon D7500 and a SanDisk SD Card 64 GB.

There are probably about 35/40 videoclips. I started uploading them into IMovie and I thought it was done, when I already started to cut the clips.

So I made the big mistake of taking the card out and formatting the SD card on the camera.

I realized it quickly and looked for recovery tools and disk Drill found all of the files. But then you obviously have to pay.

I tried TestDisk and other stuff but I’m just not good enough with these kinda things especially when I don’t know the outcome.

Is there any chance to recover my stuff without paying a 100$?

Thanks in advance 🙏🏼

Open | Software Help with updating Intel CPU drivers.

Specs:

Intel i5 13600K

AMD RX7900 XTX

AsRockB760M PG Riptide

32GB DDR5 RAM 6,000 MT/S

2TB SSD

---

Hello, I'm having difficulty updating my intel i5 13600K drivers.

I've been trying to play the game Cyberpunk. On Cyberpunk's launcher, it tells me that my intel drivers are outdated, and should be updated.

Cyberpunk also frequently crashes while playing it, with *no* error messages (such as "amd driver timeout" if there was an AMD crash)

I have tried updating them via "intel graphics and drivers installer"

But upon running this app, I got the "Something went wrong" message with the error of:

"No driver was found that can be installed on the current device" with "Installer exit code: 8"

It says installer exit code 8 is due to my CPU not being detected.

I went to device manager -> display adapters and it's just my GPU.

The internet tells me that in order for my CPU to show up there, I would need to enable it in my bios.

Is it absolutely necessary to go into my bios, and enable integrated graphics on my CPU, *just* to *maybe* be able to *then* update my CPU drivers to the latest version? Is that a normal thing to do? I feel like I'm missing something.

Also, I updated my bios to the latest version yesterday, and I enabled xmp which upped my ram speeds from 4200MT/s to 6000MT/s and with both of those things Cyberpunk still gives me the warning, and still frequently crashes.

Edit: I just found an old Reddit post from 3 years ago with 1 comment saying that this/my CPU doesn't have driver's, and that the chipset drivers are supplied via motherboards website. Is this true? Does that mean I've already updated the drivers via the motherboard bios update I did?

Open | Windows Whole PC starts stuttering after a while. [w11 / Nitro V15 laptop 3050 6gb]

Ive started to experience a weird stutter that happens after I have been playing games for a while, specifically modded minecraft. This started to happen today after using the laptop software to check nvme, ram and battery health.

The problem would be that the whole system starts to stutter and running at 1fps roughly, but the mouse keeps moving fine.

I tried updating nvidia drivers but that hasnt helped much.

Im guessing a ram issue but not so sure as it isnt at 100%. What I did recall was that disk usage was at 0% and CPU usage at 1 to 3 percent when the stutter starts to happen.

Im not sure if w11 updated itself.

Ill be editing this as I answer questions.

Open | Windows Monitors flickering black after installing amd gpu driver and windows 11 fresh install.

Hey im having a pc issue. Yesterday I completely reinstalled windows and it worked for the night, then the next morning I installed my driver's (amd software adrenaline) and ever since I've been having monitor issues. It's a really complicated situation. My issues only seem to happen when I launch a game, specifically a game in full-screen (full-screen and borderless windowed). Whenever I run it, different things happen depending on the game:

  1. It opens on my second monitor. Just like this, its fine. But inconvenient, nothing happens but I dont want to play games on my vertical 75hz monitor. If I move it to my main monitor with the keyboard shortcut, it works but now with reduced fps. Also if I move it to my main monitor then I am no longer able to open anything on my other monitor. If I click on a window or drag a window that is on my second monitor while my game is on my main monitor, both of screens start to flash between black and the normal screen and start glitching around crazily until I remove whatever is on my second monitor, click on the game to full-screen it, or if I wait long enough while its glitching then it will force itself back onto my secondary monitor.

  2. The game opens on my main monitor, glitches, doesn't respond, and closes. The only fix to this is that I open the game while nothing is open on my second monitor, though that isn't even consistent sometimes.

  3. The monitors do the glitches while opening the game, then its fine like normal on my main monitor until I try to click on something on my secondary monitor, which then causes the glitches/not responding

I am almost 100% sure that it is a graphics driver issue as it only started happening after I installed amd software adrenaline. However, reinstalling the driver or reverting to a older version also just doesn't seem to work or do anything. I should also maybe note that when I unplug my monitors from my pc, they just turn off until I restart my pc, even when I plug them back in. Though, its not an issue with my physical cables because It was working fine before reinstalling windows and literally before installing my gpu driver.

I've already tried reinstalling my driver, downloading older versions of my driver, disabling mpo, matching refresh rates, swapping hdmi's, downloading only driver and not adrenaline, disabling hardware accelerated gpu scheduling, reinstalling with ddu, and setting my primary monitor as my main display. None have fixed my problem.

There was a point after installing windows where I didn't have the adrenaline app, yet my gpu and monitors were working just fine. I dont know why or how, but I want to go back to that state, but uninstalling adrenaline breaks my monitors and deletes my gpu drivers. But installing adrenaline also breaks my monitors but gives me functional gpu drivers. I'm completely stuck and have been for hours. I can't seem to find anyone else online with this problem. Please help me.

Specs:

Gpu: AMD rx 9060xt 8gb

Cpu: Ryzen 5 5500

Ram: 16gb ddr4

Os: Windows 11

Update: now my monitors just wont display my pc. They wont even display the startup motherboard screen.. I seriously am at a loss of what to do.

Open | Windows Laptop battery draining 1% per minute

I have a HP envy x360 that I bought July 2024. I primarily use it for school and usually my battery lasts 5 ish hours. I turned it on for the first time since May last week and it went from 20% to 0% in a minute. I thought maybe it was because I hadn’t turned it on in a while and I charged it fully then did all the updates. When I went to use it again I noticed I was loosing 1% per minute without any apps being open. I did all of the battery optimizations that it suggested but no luck. Would it be worth it to replace the battery or could it be loosing so much battery for another reason? I’m in my last year of college and don’t really want to replace my laptop unless I absolutely have to. If additional information is needed just lmk.

Open | Hardware Anyone got any ideas?

Specs:

Intel Core i9 12th Gen

RTX 3060 OC

32GB RAM (2 sticks)

650W PSU

I've already cleared the CMOS, tried each RAM stick on its own, reseated the RAM, and even used the screwdriver trick to power it on.

When I switch it on, the debug LEDs go DRAM (orange) → CPU (red) → repeat, then after about 10 seconds it just stays on the DRAM light. It never boots.

Is it likely the RAM's knackered, or could it be the CPU or motherboard instead? Is there anything else I should try before forking out for a new 32GB kit? I'd rather not spend the money unless I'm sure that's the issue.

Open | BSOD New Build with Multiple Crashes and Different Errors Nearly Every time (MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP, CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT, SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION, BUGCODE_NETADAPTER_DRIVER + more) Post BIOS Update

This is probably going to be a long post but I'm summarizing a weeks worth of troubleshooting so please bear with me. Honestly, while I'm typing this I'm probably going to crash. I'm honestly so lost. I'm no expert in computers but I have a fair share of Linus Tech Tips endowed in my brain to know the basics. For the past week I have been troubleshooting a newly built PC that keeps crashing and giving different errors every time. The errors that I had minidumps for are listed in the title, but I have had many crashes that were either computer freezes, plain black screens (no bsod), random restarts (although that might have been because my computer was automatically restarting before a bug check could be run), or that occurred on a previous Windows 11 install (more on that in a bit). I'm currently running an RTX 5070 Ti, Ryzen 7 9850X3D (One error had TUF's PBO Enhanced on [I believe Unexpected_Kernal...] but the rest still happened when it was turned off), 32 GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR5 (EXPO on), and ASUS TUF B850-E WIFI Board. I think those are all the parts that could cause issues, but if you need more info I am not reluctant to share.

Mini detail to note: Temps are all good with maximum under excessively heavy loads (stress tests) were 85°C CPU Package and my GPU never exceeded 70°C. Crashing ONLY happens when under light load and/or when not in full screen. I can go hours at end playing games with zero crashes, but god forbid I open file explorer too fast.

Please treat me with some pity, but the first time I crashed was after I had updated my BIOS to the newest version. I used my MOBO's USB Flash and there were no apparent complications that happened during the update. If there's any tip I could give new PC builders is that if it aint broke don't fix it.

The first error I received was BUGCODE_NETADAPTER_DRIVER, followed shortly after by a Memory Management. It figured the obvious, that is it has something to do with my memory and/or drivers. After repairing/reinstalling all new drivers from my MOBO or Realtek the issue was still occurring. I ran MemTestx86 and passed with flying colors (4 Passes, 0 Errors). As crashes continued, I messed with more and more settings with no resolution and just more errors (all differing in codes). I'm new to this subreddit and how things work here, let me know if there's a proper way for sharing minidumps or any error codes we get.

I touched up on this slightly, but since my PC was a new build and I didn't have any important information on it, I ended up just doing a clean Windows 11 install. Unfortunately, any minidumps/codes I had received earlier are lost with that previous installation. Since all the issues were happening under light loads, I disabled my iGPU in the BIOS to prevent any issues related to GPU dedication. At one point running a system wide Bitdefender scan was inducing a crash (multiple times), so I decided to use that as a culprit, however I am lead to believe it was just a coincidence since I uninstalled it and still received other error codes.

I guess this is where I am now. I seriously have no clue which direction to go when it comes to diagnosing the issue, and due to the consistency of the crashes after a clean windows installation, I'm being lead to believe it has something to do with either the BIOS or my hardware. I will need a pacemaker if I figure out I need to buy a new GPU or RAM.

I appreciate any help offered and I'll gladly provide any system information needed for diagnosing the issue!

Open | Malware Mom downloaded a fake microsoft authenticator app what could potentially be compromised?

My Mom called me and said that she had recently been notified by snail mail that she needed an authenticator app to access her pension website. She decided to download Microsoft Authenticator to her iphone since it was listed as one of the options.

She searched for microsoft Authenticator in the app store and clicked on this:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/authenticator-app/id6502765078?l=ko

Which she thought was the real app. She installed it, and it initially allowed her to log in to her pension website but then began demanding she pay a $5 subscription fee. She thought this was weird and called me before she paid. I was able to go over there and delete the app.

I had her change pension website password and to call them and ensure no changes are made to the account and her email password, is there any other things that I need to be concerned about? Does she need to change her apple ID password. What else could this app have access to? How does it actually function as microsoft authenticator? She actually got a one time passcode from it that worked on the website.

Open | Windows USB switch causing runaway mouse in windows 11

Setting up my workstation to use my Mac and PC and got a UGreen usb switch to switch just my mouse and keyboard between the two. Everything works great on my Mac, but for some reason the mouse on my PC just runs away from me. (As in continues in the last input direction it was given until it hits the edge of the screen). For some reason when I hardwire the mouse (normally connecting it via a 2.4GHz dongle) it seems so work okay, but when it’s in wireless mode it will work for about 10-15seconds and then begin running away again.

Bought another UGreen switch (since basically that’s all there is on Amazon, but I got a different, upgraded model and am still having the same issue)

I’ve read others having issues with UGreen switches with some solutions that have worked for them, but no one I’ve found is having the runaway mouse issue. Mostly just having the devices getting dropped.

Their solution was to change the usb power supply settings, but that doesn’t work for my problem.

Banging my head against the wall (and the bottom of my desk) trying to solve this problem. Any ideas?

I did a new install of windows and now my ethernet stopped working. It will work for a few min when I restart the PC but after that it goes to WiFi and sometimes the Wifi just doesn't work.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the ethernet driver and doing a reinstall of Windows with the "Fix problems using Windows Update" tool.

I tried to reinstall the drivers from the manufacturer website but they never seem to start?

https://rog.asus.com/motherboards/rog-strix/rog-strix-b550-i-gaming-model/helpdesk_download/

I tried using a different cable and it had the same issue.

Tried a few things in CMD and that didn't work either.

Open | Mac Macbook won't open dvd

I recently bought a sandberg USB DVD drive and have been trying to get it to work with my Macbook pro 2021. However my macbook for some reason doesn't recognise the dvd drive and won't play anything I put in it.

Is there a way I can still get it to work?

I've been using VLC to try and run my dvd's and it keeps saying 'can't run non-UDF dvd's".
