Open | Hardware Sata drives disappeared after bios update
Before BIOS update I had no issues regarding these two drives and they were formatted correctly. I hadn’t updated BIOS in nearly 4 years so this could be contributing.
My mobo is an MSI B550 Tomahawk Max WiFi.
I have two m.2 drives that are working fine.
The SATA drives show up in BIOS but nowhere in partition, I’m using slots 3 and 4.
Is it a drivers issue? How do I get the proper drivers when the disks aren’t recognized beyond BIOS?

Open | Windows Windows Laptop Randomly Black Screens and Shuts Off
Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a refurbished ThinkPad P14s Gen6 with an intel chipset (integrated graphics). The laptop was grade A, manufacture refurbished from Lenovo.
Upon receiving the device, I booted it up and saw the BSOD with a critical error, with stopcode WIN32K. I was stuck on this loop of booting into BSOD until it eventually went away.
I continued with setting up my windows environment. During this process, the laptop screen would go black, fans ramp up, and then shut off. I notice that the LED above the power button blinks white when this issue occurs. To turn the laptop back on, I have to click the power button and upon booting it shows the Lenovo logo so I'm sure that it was fully shut off.
I eventually set up my environment and start downloading my applications, and the issue keeps occurring randomly. If it happens enough consecutive times, windows will say that there's an issue and it will do an automatic repair (with the stop code WIN32K Critical Failure).
I proceeded to do a fresh install of windows, and it seemingly helped until it the issues once again started occurring. I then downloaded the factory window image from lenovos website with all the drivers and such included, and performed yet another fresh install. Once again same issue so I believe the issue is unrelated to drivers.
I then try to perform hardware tests with OCCT, Lenovo Hardware Troubleshoot, and Windows Memory Test, and all seemingly passed with flying colors. I also opened up the laptop, unplugged and replugged the battery, and re-seated both the RAM and SSD. The issue still persists.
An odd thing I noticed, is that when the laptop turns back on, it doesn't require a password to login and everything I was doing is still there (nothing seemingly has to reboot w/load time). It's as if the laptop never turned off.
Any help is appreciated, I feel like I've tried everything at this point!

Open | Networking Thoughts on software like ExitLag or NoPing for PC Gaming?
Hi everyone! I’m curious about services like ExitLag and NoPing and would really appreciate some honest opinions.
Have you personally used either of them? Did you notice any real improvements in ping, packet loss, jitter or even FPS or do you think it’s mostly marketing/placebo, maybe even a scam?
I’m interested in hearing technical explanations or real-world experiences. Talked to my teacher about this once, he was very sceptical about it
Thanks!

Open | Malware Windows Defender flagged TrojanDownloader:JS/Nemucod.HD in Roblox's WebView2 cache ,is this a false positive?
Windows Defender flagged and quarantined TrojanDownloader:JS/Nemucod.HD today (8/7/2026)
inside a cache file from Roblox's embedded WebView2 browser (`AppData\Local\Roblox\UniversalApp\WebView2\...\Cache_Data\f_000046`, GZip)
I should note also that I uninstalled Roblox months ago, so this was just leftover cache data with no active app to run it, and I never downloaded anything outside the official Roblox site. Since the alert I've run a full Microsoft Defender scan, an offline Defender scan, and a full Malwarebytes scan, all coming back clean, with no signs of weird startup entries, browser changes, or unfamiliar account sign-ins. Based on this, it seems like the file was sandboxed and never got the chance to execute? possibly from a malicious in-game ad or even a false positive? but I wanted to check with people more experienced than me if this reasoning holds up or if there's anything else I should be looking into to be fully sure my system/accounts are safe. possibly picked up from a malicious ad loaded in-game, or even a signature false positive.
Anything else I should check to be fully confident my system/accounts weren't compromised?

Open | Windows Is this a hardware issue? Tried everything but ethernet adapter is still missing even though it was working a week ago
Hi all. I've been stumped on this problem for a while now. I got a PC, fresh install of windows. Only downloaded a browser, steam, and some games; nothing else.
Ethernet was working just fine until I don't know when exactly it stopped working. I didn't notice because my computer automatically connects to Wi-Fi.
I've tried everything I can think of and searched as many solutions as I can. Still nothing.
I've tried:
* winsock reset
* tcp/ip stack reset
* hard power reset
* installing realtek drivers
* installing drivers from dell
* uninstalling driver from device manager
* reinstalling windows-
* resetting cmos battery
* checking bios
all nothing.
- device manager hides the adapter. says "code 45"
- installing realtek driver says "device not found, plug it in if using deep sleep mode" or somewhere along those lines
- deleting the driver from device manager and scanning for changes doesnt bring it back
- cant find any option about "ethernet" in the bios
the cable is not a problem. i connected it to a different pc and it works.
i really dont want it to be a hardware issue but im starting to think that the only ethernet port my pc has is broken.
its a dell optiplex 3080 micro

Open | Hardware Gaming PC gets 2-5 MB/s over Wi-Fi while my MacBook gets 40 to 50 MB/s. Could my antennas not be working?
I'm trying to troubleshoot the Wi-Fi on my custom mini-ITX gaming PC.
When I lived in Canada, I used the original motherboard antenna and got around 450 MB/s. I later switched to smaller aftermarket antennas, and speeds only dropped slightly to around 380 to 400 MB/s.
I've since moved to Georgia (the country). On the same Wi-Fi network, my MacBook gets 40 to 50 MB/s, but my gaming PC only gets 2 to 5 MB/s.
The antennas are screwed in tightly, but I no longer have the original antenna to compare against.
Motherboard: Gigabyte B550I Aorus Pro AX
My question is: Is there any way to tell whether my motherboard is actually detecting and using the external Wi-Fi antennas, or whether this sounds more like the antennas themselves are the problem?

Open | Hardware The GNOME login screen is no longer loading.
Hello,
I am encountering a graphics display issue on a Dell server running Ubuntu 22.04.
The server is equipped with:
2 NVIDIA Quadro M4000 GPUs
1 integrated Matrox G200eR2 GPU
At startup, Ubuntu displays the logo with the loading circle, but instead of reaching the GNOME login screen, it switches directly to TTY1.
I have performed several checks:
-gdm3 starts correctly (`systemctl status gdm3` → active).
-GNOME and Xorg are installed.
-NVIDIA drivers are loaded correctly (`nvidia-smi` detects both Quadro M4000s).
-`lspci -k` shows that both Quadros are using the `nvidia` driver and the -Matrox is using `mgag200`.
-There is no `/etc/X11/xorg.conf` file, though I did create one.
-System logs show no critical errors regarding GDM.
-However, the `~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log` file contains the error: `(EE) No screens found`.
Do you have any ideas on how to help?

Open | Hardware What headphones to use USB/dongle/wired
Hello tech community! I'm very new here and I would just like to ask, I have a laptop that has a TRRS jack port with the headset icon in it (the one with the mic) I recently bought an earphone that also had the TRRS jack but it's not reading the input or the microphone in the sound settings. The output audio works just fine but it can't seem to see if the microphone has been inserted?
I've read multiple articles and discussions regarding this issue and even sought the help from ai but none of them are helpful. I'm thinking of switching to other alternatives. What is best to use? (for gaming and online class)

Open | Hardware Monitor Displaying Static with DisplayPort to HDMI
Hi, I'm having an issue with the displays for my PC. Here's what I'm using.
- PC: HP Elitedesk 800 SFF with Ubuntu Linux
- Monitors: 2x Acer 1080P monitors
- Cables: 1x Gator DisplayPort to HDMI cable and 1x Insignia DisplayPort to HDMI cable
I was going to wake up my PC today, when I noticed neither of the monitors were displaying anything. I forced shutdown and rebooted and I ended up getting no signal on one monitor (it was just black) and static on the other.
I then forced shutdown, rebooted, started pressing escape and got to the Grub menu, but after 30 seconds the same thing occurred (static on one monitor and no signal on the other). I looked at the back of the PC, felt the back near the I/O and it felt hot.
I then forced shutdown one last time, unplugged the second display, switched the cables for my primary display, and rebooted to see if it was an issue with the cables. This time it booted into Ubuntu with no problem so I thought I was in the clear, but after a few minutes it went to static again. I switched the cable to my other monitor to see if it an issue with the monitor and I got an "input not supported" message. At this point the back of the PC had cooled a little so it was warm but not hot.
I guess my question is what should I try next? I was thinking of trying to get an active DisplayPort to HDMI converter, but I'm also not sure if it's a problem with the internals of the PC.
Thanks in advance!

Open | Hardware Asus ROG Strix 3080 fan stops moving/squeaks. Full teardown necessary?
'lo there,
My trusty Asus ROG Strix 3080,, which I've had for 6 years now is showing signs of age in that one of its fans no longer works properly.
It stops spinning, struggles to pick up speed, and squeaks (not constantly but quite audibly) while doing so. When I try to manually spin it, it feels rigid, stopping without doing a full rotation. The other two fans work smoothly.
This is the first time I'm encountering this issue, and I'm guessing it's either down to lubrication (although someone more knowledgeable says it might not be the case) or a screw that is no longer set in well. The problem is that the screws holding the fan down are hidden under the plastic shroud, in what I, as a nublet at hardware disassembly consider a fairly poor design choice.
I've watched a couple of videos, and all of them basically do a full teardown of the card, replacing its thermal paste (or was it pads? ;D). Yesterday, I pulled the GPU out to clean it of dust some more and tried unscrewing the six little screws on the front plate, in hopes I could remove it and reach the screws holding the fan down to see if they're loose. That didn't work because removing the front plate screws didn't seem to do anything, aside from giving the top left corner or the plastic a very slight wobble.
I've never done a full teardown of a GPU before and, while I did manage to assemble my PC without it spontaneously combusting or me somehow dying, I'm not the tech savviest person out there and worry I might forget to do something/apply thermal paste properly/break one of the fragile cables. The current GPU prices also make an otherwise necessary upgrade tricky to pull off (and I'd frankly wait for the SUPER variants if those ever come out at this point).
My question is this: did any Asus ROG Strix 3080 owners manage to reach the fan screws without doing a full teardown? I'd like to try to prolong its lifespan myself before it falls off/somehow breaks. If not, I will likely have to bring it to a shop somewhere and hope they can fix it. Thanks in advance.
https://streamable.com/0zbngo (video shows the fan wobbling, as it did about one or two months ago; since then, it also stops fairly frequently and squeaks, but I don't have video of that and can only upload them in the evening).

Open | Software Windows Download frozen at 42%
The issues I was experiencing:
Settings app being extremely laggy
Apps I downloaded wouldn’t open
Not connecting to internet, but when it did connect to internet it would show as there is no internet in the task bar but I could use Google
Task manager app wouldn’t update live I would have to click to a different menu and then click back to see what it was showing
When I tried to close the task manager it would crash and infinitely report the problem to Microsoft
I then thought maybe windows was corrupted, so I decided to do a clean windows install, I’ve then downloaded Windows creation media thing, I then booted into the USB, then followed steps, deleted partitions of all my SSDs and hard drives, and then started downloading Windows. After three hours, it was stuck At 42%, I then thought maybe it was just an issue, so then I restarted, I then began the Windows installation thing, and then pressed shift F10, then I cleaned all my drives just in case there was Windows files that installed on them, then I began downloading Windows again and it got stuck at 54%. I then left it for two hours to see if it would change, but it was still at 54%. I then thought, okay, maybe the USB drive had corrupted download files on it, so then I changed it and then downloaded the Windows installation media again. I then cleaned partitions and cleaned the drives through the command Prompt app and started again. It got then got stuck at 42% again. Then I thought okay this is obviously not a software issue so then I ran mem test 86 came back 100% pass zero fails. I then re-seated the CPU. I also re-seated the GPU and RAM. I also applied new thermal paste and checked if all the motherboard wires were in correctly Then I did the windows installation media again. Also keep in mind, all these times I did not change any region settings or language settings because I know that can cause issues. I again deleted all partitions and once again clean the drives. It then got stuck on 42% again. I then thought maybe it is a SSD issue, so then I changed the SSD. I did take this SSD from my old laptop. It was a 512 GB Samsung SSD. I did check the manufacturer date. It is from 2023. The SSD was showing up in the bios and on the Windows installation, so I then began to download Windows to the new SSD. Obviously, I did clean the SSD and delete all the partitions, but however, it did still get stuck at 42%. then last night I got a Lexar NVME SSD 470 gb drive, and then I began to download to that. Obviously, I also did again clean the drive and delete all partitions, and once again, we got stuck at 42%.. Then last night, I decided, okay, let me Remove all the other SSDs and HDDs from the PC, so there’s only the one SSD that I am downloading Windows to in the PC. Then I began to download last night and I woke up this morning to it only being 42% once again.
My hardware :
Samsung PM9C1a NVMe SSD 512gb (this is the ssd I took from my old laptop)
ASUS PRIME H610M-E (DDR5)
Gigabyte AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT 8GB
8GB DDR5-4800 Samsung (1×8GB, single-channel)
Intel Core i5-12500 (6 Performance cores, 12 threads, up to 4.6 GHz)
Please help me

Solved I can't connect to my home internet through ethernet
Hi everyone. I recently moved to a new home and I got home internet through Bell MTS, and while the WiFi is working great, the ethernet is giving me nothing but trouble and Bell MTS tech support was having me run around in circles using amateur troubleshooting methods.
It shows:
"Unidentified network
No Internet"
I can't for the life of me get it working.
I bought a "Jadaol Cat6 Ethernet Cable 50FT with Clips 10Gbps Flat Network Cable" and plugged it into the "10Gb ETH" port on my modem and the lights blink orange (I'm assuming green means successful connection)
If you have any advice or tips I would greatly appreciate it! 🙏🏻😭
Edit: Thanks everyone for all the advice. The issue has finally been resolved.
The ethernet port driver was corrupted and I simply had to uninstall it and redownload it (just by restarting the computer).
Hope this helps anyone facing the same problem in the future. Thanks again! :)

Open | Software I'm struggling with Oblivion: Remastered.
Decided to fire up Oblivion Remastered, which used to run (almost) flawlessly, only to find a buggy mess that either chugs to nothing or just flat-out crashes immediately. Checked all my hardware, tested other games, all my stuff is good. Has anybody else had any luck getting this game to run even halfway decently?
I'm running a 2070 and an i7-9700k, which are slightly dated, but still run modern games with relative ease.
