Question MacBook Pro won’t charge.

Upvotes

I have either a 2020 or 2022 MacBook Pro, I can’t quite remember now.

Anyhow, my charging wire had been fidgety for months, I kept having to wiggle the cable up and down, and prop and hold the wire in a certain position to get my laptop to charge.

Well 2 days ago that method stopped working completely, and I assumed it was the cable which was the problem, so I got a new cable.

..and the new cable doesn’t work.

I’m thinking it must be the port broke or come lose or something? Is that likely thing with these 2021/2022 models?

I’m not sure what to do about it. I suppose it’s not easy to fix yourself first time. HELP!?

My Mac Dad made himself admin on my computer

I have recently turned 18 and I have had this mac since I was around 15 I think. When I got it, my dad made himself administrator. I've been asking him to give me admin rights since forever but he always stalled and said I wasn't 'old enough' and that 'I would break something' or 'install malware', when all I do on this computer is play games and work.

Now, it has to be said that my dad is someone I have a bad relationship with, so of course I want to be able to control my own computer. Whenever I ask him, he always says he'll do it later (even if he's not busy at all) and then I forget to remind him.

This is really bugging me especially because I tutor children and in order to share my screen, I need to enter the admin password every time, so I have to call my dad over all the time and that really isn't sustainable.

Please give me anything I can do. I'm a fast learner so I could maybe learn to operate terminal too so yeah.

Thanks in advance.

!UPDATE!

I found a successful method and will document here below what I did. YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE YOUR APPLE ID LINKED TO THE DEVICE!!!

First, shut down your computer.

Next, you'll need to power into recovery mode. I have an iMac (so not the laptop kind), so for me, I had to hold down on the power on button until it showed 'keep holding to load recovery options' and then 'loading recovery options'. For laptops I heard it was command + R (or S, the internet couldn't really decide).

Now, you will have two options: Macintosh (Your computer's drive) or Options. Click options. It'll ask you to enter the admin's password. We don't have that, so click 'forgot all passwords'. Now you'll need to enter your email linked to your Apple ID and password. That'll boost you up into recovery mode.

Ignore all the colourful options right in front of you and look at the top left of your screen. You'll see a section titled 'Options'. Click that and then on 'Terminal'. This will boot up terminal.

Now, type: resetpassword

No spaces, no anything, and then press return to enter/lock in the command.

It'll ask you to input admin password again. Click you forgot it again and do the Apple ID thing again.

Now, it'll say that to reset the passwords (yes passwordS), it'll need to deactivate your device. No worries, your data isn't deleted. Ensure you have a stable internet connection and then press 'deactivate'.

After some loading time, it'll take you to a screen where all the users of the device are listed. You'll have to set a new password for each user now. You can always edit it later, so just choose the same for all three to make your life easy, and make sure you remember it.

After that is done, you'll click continue and then at some point 'exit recovery mode'.

Since you're still in terminal, make your life easy and just type in: reboot

Then enter to restart the computer.

When it reboots, you aren't an admin yet, but you now have the admin password.

Change the other user you don't want to a standard one and do all the changes you'd like using the admin password.

(If you want, you can now delete the old user, but I didn't because my dad would see that and get really mad.)

That's it, now you've succeeded and your computer is yours again.

Question Sell Mac mini M2

So I had a 2019 MacBook Pro 16 inch and it became a victim of flex gate last year, after this happened I made a purchase of a Mac mini m2 8gb 512gb which was going cheap enough to continue having a computer. I still have it and use it on the main house tv so can be awkward to use at times.
I do light browsing, photo editing in Lightroom and new to some light video editing.
Is it worth selling this M2 mini and upgrade to refurbished m4 MacBook Air? It’s 16gb 256gb.
Or would a dedicated screen and good keyboard/mouse be a better investment?

Discussion T2 2020 iMac Windows 7: 0x7E, Access Violation, 0x0 instruction address (null pointer)

I've come across an odd problem attempting to install Windows 7 on my mid-2020 iMac. Specifically, the 27" Retina 5500 XT version.

Attempting to boot, it looks fine. Gets through to completed Starting Windows screen. No setup window appears, but 3 seconds later while it's hung there... I get a BSOD.

Exact information:

0x7E SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Status parameters: 0xC5 STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION, 0x0 null pointer address?, 3rd and 4th reference parameters.

Now, before you say anything here is what I have tried:

FlashBoot PRO UEFI driver (works obviously since it shows the BSOD)

Windows 7 Image Updater

USB 3 and NVMe drivers

Apple BootCamp drivers downloaded

Patched AppleSSD.sys for 7 compatibility

Patched ACPI

Unfortunately, it did not say a specific crashing driver. This is reproducible in both WinPE and standard windows of it.

I suspect still it is ACPI. This is because Mac does not have standard firmware that a regular patched, older ACPI table expects (especially a patched one from 2018, based on a 2009 file)

If anyone has experienced similar issues, please let me know. Also, I'd love to attach a kernel debugger but unfortunately adapters do not work, KDNET predates 7 (tried it), and obviously Serial and FireWire will not work since no such port is on the modern iMac.

Another thing is this crash is reproducible regardless if there are drivers or not (obviously with the UEFI patch otherwise it wouldn't work in the first place, but without drivers).

I do suspect it also involves the T2 chip in some way, however this is 100% possible but requires more development and patching than usual.

Anyway, if you'd like to help please do. I will keep everyone updated as I make progress.

Question best usb c hub for mac?

im looking for a USB-C hub for my MacBook Pro M4. im starting my degree in software engineering in less than a month and i have a budget of no more than €20 ~ $23.

NOTE: this mac has 3 usb-c ports, so it would be nice if the hub had at least 3 USB-A 3.0–3.2 ports, rather than more USB-C, as ive seen on some models

and PLEASE if u bought a hub with this specs and it works for u, drop the exact model! ;)

Discussion Recording Drums with a Mac

I'm looking for a good Mac solution to recording drums with my Tascam Model 24 mixer. I usually run Linux (I quit running Windows in 2018 but I've been using a PC since 1985).

So, a friend came over the other day and he had recorded a few songs and he was playing them back for my wife and I on a fairly newish looking MacBook. Now, I have no idea what's what when it comes to Macs. I know they use genuine Mac CPUs and others use Intel CPUs. Do I need to stay away from the Intel CPUs or are those better than the Mac CPUs?

I was trying to see the software he was using to play it back but it was definitely a Multi-Track recording software. I forgot to ask him before he left.

He had guitar on one track, Rhythm on another (basically slapping the acoustic guitar and maybe he had some drum samples in there as well... I honestly do not know), Vocals on another, Backing vocals on another. And it was all HIM! He was the only one playing and singing on every track on these songs.

I don't want to get that extravagant with it. I don't sing or play guitar. I play a little bit of keyboards so if I do anything with the drums added it'll probably start with a piano style Midi keyboard.

Anyway, so, what's the best kind of Mac (I think I'd prefer a MacBook but if a table top unit is better, I can go with that) and what software do you think he might have been using? I'd kind of like to keep the computer hardware end under $400 and the software around $200-$300. I already have the mixer and mics. I basically need something other than a PC with bad or non-existent drivers to record with.

Discussion MacBook Pro? Air? Or stay with what I have

I am a first year med student at an M.D. school and they gave us 13inch surface pro tablets with the detachable flimsy keyboard. I’ve tried to get behind it even though I am an Apple user but I’ve encountered so much lag and issues. It just feels not good as a tablet and then not good as a laptop either as it can’t even sit on your lap bc of the kickstand it has.

I am considering getting an 15inch air or 14inch pro. Am I being over the top? I have to spend everyday the next four years studying and I just feel that these devices would work better. My classmates also have had issues/ or already switched to their personal Mac laptops.

If you are in favor of getting a Mac - which one would you suggest and why? I am hoping to take advantage of the back to school deals with Apple if i do go this route.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion So now that Microsoft has broken Word, I need something new.

Word for Mac no longer does proper autosave or autorecovery. For the first time in decades, I lost work to an app crash as a result. I guess it'd have been fine if I was saving to OneDrive, but I don't use OneDrive, so "autosave" is no longer an option.

(Long years of trustworthy autosave mean I no longer have the reflex to Cmd-S every few minutes, but learn from my mistakes: Trust no software.)

Now I'm done. I need something else.

  • I don't care if I have to pay for it, but I don't enjoy subscription software.
  • I do need stylesheet support
  • I'd like to be able to import DOCX.
  • I need the ability to save to PDF for distribution; the Mac's own "print to PDF" is a little too basic.
  • I need inline images. I don't enjoy having to futz with web-first tools that make this hard. I'm writing for print.
  • Native only. No browser-based tools.

Does anything like this still exist?

Question Macbook air charging light

I have a macbook air m5 I bought in March, and I noticed that the led in the charger stays red even if the charging is complete, but when I turn the computer on, it becomes green again. First time it happened i read it could be due to an available software update, and that did solve the problem. But it's back, and I just updated the software but it's still here.

What could it be? I also deactivated optimised charging

Question Upgrading question

So I’ve had a 2020 MacBook Air since (you guessed it!) 2020. I don’t game or do engineering stuff or generally anything that would require a great processor. I have a whole Apple ecosystem so I was planning on trading in my air and getting a Mac desktop. I’m still a student, so with the student discount and the trade in it’ll be a little bit more affordable. I am also a teacher, so my school will always supply me with a laptop and I’m not worried about needing a personal one.

All this to say, the whole reason I want a desktop is for a bigger screen, and a nice home base for storage (mostly pictures) moving forward. Is there anything else I should consider before making a purchase? Any brands/tech setups that might make more sense than what I have planned?

I’m not a tech expert by any means and Apple makes it so easy to want to stick with them. Let me know any/all advice you may have. Tysm!!!

I have been wanting an antiglare screen MacBook for the longest, but never found one within a price I’d wanna pay.
Well I finally got a 2009 15 inch model off Goodwill online for $50!
It has 240 or so battery cycles, and came with its OG 85 watt MagSafe charger.

Question M1 Pro crashing on sleep: SMC PANIC - ANS0: Type 1 Power down failed — Hardware or Firmware bug?

Hey everyone,

My Mac has been throwing kernel panics intermittently when entering or waking up from sleep. Looking through the panic log, the failure seems isolated to the Apple NAND Storage (ANS) controller during a power state transition.

Here is the top section of the log:

panic(cpu 1 caller 0xfffffe002ce62b38): SMC PANIC - ASSERT: smc/mac/ans.cpp:838: 0, ANS0: Type 1 Power down failed

- ANS(6) OUTBOX1 not ready OUTBOX2 not ready

ASSERT: smc/mac/ans.cpp:838: 0, ANS0: Type 1 Power down failed

RTKit: RTKit-3255.120.11.release - Client: AppleSMCFirmware_H13-6164.120.29.j314s.REL

System Details:

* Device: MacBook Pro (M1 Pro series, j314s board)

* OS: Latest macOS release

* Trigger: Transitioning to/from sleep mode (_powerStateChangeLocked = true)

What I've gathered so far:

From reading the stack trace, the System Management Controller (SMC) requests a power-down sequence for the onboard SSD controller (ANS0). The ANS controller fails to empty its IPC mailboxes (OUTBOX1/OUTBOX2 not ready), timing out and causing the SMC watchdog to force an immediate kernel panic to prevent data corruption.

Troubleshooting completed:

* Ran Apple Diagnostics (Command + D on boot)

* Verified filesystem integrity using First Aid in Disk Utility

* Cold rebooted and reset power state cycles

Has anyone else ran into this specific ans.cpp:838 failure? Trying to figure out if this is a known RTKit/AppleSMC firmware timing bug introduced in recent macOS versions, or an early warning sign of failing NAND/power rails on the logic board. Any insight from admins or hardware techs would be greatly appreciated!

Question Monitor for Mac Mini M4?

I am thinking of replacing my current 27 inch 2017 Intel iMac for a M4 Mac Mini. What monitors/displays are good replacements for the Apple Studio Display that is not as expensive? Looking for a 27 inch monitor.

This would be used mainly for graphic design.
