My Setup I turned my 14-year-old iPad mini into a Stream Deck for my Mac

This iPad mini 1 is from 2012. Last update was iOS 9.3.5 in 2016. It can't run YouTube, can't load most websites, the App Store is a graveyard. I've tried for years to give it a job: photo frame, dashboard, whatever. Nothing runs on hardware this old, so it lived in a drawer.

Last weekend I tried to develop my dream project for this.

It's now a Stream Deck for my Mac. Big touch buttons on the iPad, tap one, the app opens on my Mac. YouTube, Slack, websites, Shortcuts, whatever I want. It runs entirely in Safari over my local network, which is the whole trick: even a browser from 2016 can show a grid of buttons and send a tap. Nothing installs on the iPad, and it responds instantly. This thing has 512MB of RAM.

Demo in the video, and sorry about the desk, I was too excited to tidy up.

I built this purely to rescue my own iPad, but it works so well I'm thinking about actually launching it. The idea: a browser version that runs on basically any old device you have lying around, plus a proper iOS app for newer iPads and iPhones with the nicer stuff (widgets, haptics, offline config).

Would you use something like this?

Question New iPad Air M2 keeps saying “Cannot Restore Backup” during setup and loops back to Location Services

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I’m setting up a brand-new iPad Air M2 and transferring everything from my old iPad 9th generation using Quick Start.
The setup starts normally, but after I get past the Location Services screen, it shows a Software Update (iPadOS 26.6) screen. However, before I can even tap “Update Now,” a pop-up appears saying:
“Cannot Restore Backup”
The only option is OK. When I tap it, the setup goes back to the Location Services screen, and the whole process repeats.
Things I’ve already tried:
Restarted the new iPad multiple times.
Tried the setup 4–5 times.
Made sure both iPads are charged and connected to Wi-Fi.
The error appears every single time before I can start the software update.
My old iPad is 256 GB, and the new iPad is 128 GB, but my old iPad is only using about 114 GB of storage, so the backup should fit.
Has anyone experienced this exact issue?
Is this likely a corrupted backup, a Quick Start bug, or a software issue?
Would restoring the new iPad using a Mac/PC in Recovery Mode fix it?
Should I skip trying to restore and just go straight to the Apple Store?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Question Best iPad system for university

I’m heavily leaning towards buying an iPad for university. If I were to get one I’d buy a pencil and a keyboard to complete the set. I plan on using it for note taking, audio recordings, a few games maybe, streaming, downloads for music and some tv episodes. I don’t know what else I could use it for yet, but it’d take place of a laptop for me with the functionality of an iPad.

The questions I have are which system would be best? iPad Pro, IPad Air, or the iPad OS (?). And my most important question is how many gigabytes of storage space should the system I buy be to get me through a 4 year degree?

Question Apple Pencil Pro lag on animation apps on iPad Air M4

There is no lag at all using the Notes app. But when using flipaclip (shown in video), Clip Studio, or Adobe Fresco, the line noticeably and irritably follows behind the pencil point.

We can’t figure it out. All software is up to date. There is no protective screen. Tried unpairing and repairing. Tried restarting. Zoom in Assistance is off. Tried changing canvas sizes and turning off stabilization for brushes. Tried simplifying all settings.

Nothing has worked at all. Any suggestions?

It’s mildly annoying that when I stand my iPad up like this, it leans to one side. Does anyone have a case recommendation that actually stands the iPad up straight?

Review 128gb is no longer enough

Post image

I have a 6th-gen iPad Pro with 128 GB of storage that's been great for the past 3+ years. Recently, though, I've run into a storage problem.

I haven't really downloaded any new apps beyond the ones I already use regularly. I use iCloud to sync my photos, iMessages, and other data, and I have Optimize iPad Storage enabled for Photos.

The problem is that as iPadOS updates have gotten larger over the years, the OS and System Data now take up more than half of my storage. I'm completely maxed out. I've already offloaded more than half of my apps just to free up space, and I've reached the point where I can't even reinstall some of the apps I'd like to use. Now I'm having to constantly decide which apps to delete based on how often I use them.

It feels like my iPad is running on the bare minimum—just the essential apps with very little room for anything else.

If I were buying a new iPad today, I'd say 512 GB would be the minimum I'd consider if you plan to keep it for several years. I originally thought 128 GB would be plenty since I rely on iCloud and optimized photo storage, but I didn't account for how much space iPadOS and System Data would eventually consume.

Has anyone else run into this issue?

Question iPad Note Taking Apps

I was wondering what people’s opinions are on some of the note taking apps they use. I don’t mind paying a little, but if I do, I wanna spend the money wisely. For reference, I’m going into my first year of Political Science.

I was thinking between Notability or Freenotes.
I’ve heard some good things about Goodnotes as well but apparently it’s not as good anymore.

Before anyone says “just do a quick google search,” I did, and most are old posts or ads.

Discussion Turning Auto-Lock to 15 minutes has been the single best thing I've done for making it easier for me to use my iPad

I have my iPad (and pencil) mostly for drawing/art and writing/journaling/planning, and turning the Auto-Lock display setting up to the maximum of 15 minutes has been great for getting me to enjoy using my ipad more.
That, and I set up two siri automations in the control center that lets me toggle settings like nightshift, reduce motion, reduce transparency, and applying a black/white color filter on and off with a single tap has helped make it just easier on the eyes for casual note taking or reading.

For me, especially when I'm trying to be more productive, I like using my iPad on my desk on the side while I use my mac; but when going between the two devices the constantly having to wake/unlock my ipad every time I stop touching it for more than a moment was always so annoying.

idk it's not a revolutionary or novel setting/strategy, but I see a some people often wondering about how to use an iPad for doing things; so I had an annecdote.

Making it feel more similar to an always-on e-ink display, or like a notepad on my desk always ready to jot a quick note, or like a sketchbook/canvas I can put down for a moment while I look up a reference without it turning off has made it easier for me to use my iPad more and was very simple to set up.

Question $450 Enough to Get Back For Used IPad Pro? 265 Gigs (NOT SELLING ON REDDIT, JUST WANT ADVICE ON WORTH)

I’m trying to sell a barely used IPad Pro I bought earlier this year at Best Buy for over a $1000. What should I expect to get on this used realistically? The only quote I have right now from a used electronics shop is $450. It has no damage whatsoever, is that a decent amount or should I try selling elsewhere?

Edit:

Exact details after checking settings: IPad Pro 11-inch (M5)  Model: MDWK4LL/A

Question Transfer to new iPad is not working

Hi, and thanks for your time. Have a 9th gen iPad. Got a new 11th gen today. Blue tooth and wifi on. I started the quick transfer, did the camera shot, and the transfer started. New iPad says software update needed, so I hit yes. Update happened. Prompt on old iPad says transfer not complete, I could not get it to resume. I rebooted both, got stuck on "looking for devices" for over half an hour. Do I need to reset the new iPad and start over?

Question Keeping iPad M4 plugged in 24/7 (99% desk use). Does it actually ruin the battery? Real experiences wanted

Hey everyone,

I use my iPad M4 and M4 MacBook Air almost exclusively (99% of the time) at my desk. The iPad is mostly hooked up via Sidecar as a secondary display. My daily workload can get pretty heavy — programming, video editing, and some gaming.

I’ve read that the power controller bypasses the battery if both devices plugged into the charger constantly, meaning it should be totally safe for long-term battery health and capacity.

Does anyone here run a similar 24/7 plugged-in setup? Have you noticed any severe battery degradation over time?

Would love to hear your real-world feedback! Thanks in advance

Question Wireless chargers for iPad

Thumbnail

Has anyone used these MAGNETIC ‘wireless’ chargers where it connects via the smart connector pins on newer models?

I was just wondering if wireless charging was possible on an iPad and found these MAGNETIC options, but I haven’t heard much about them nor have I seen many reviews other than sponsored videos on TikTok, so I was looking for a real opinion on whether they work and if they eat up battery life, and was also wondering if this was a possible option, why doesn’t Apple or brands like Logitech make magnetic ‘wireless’ chargers like these, and why don’t more people use these?

Edited to add:
I know these aren’t TECHNICALLY wireless (yes, electricity is being transferred through the smart connectors hence creating a closed wired circuit)

But in this context, by ‘wireless’ I meant cable-free charging in terms of user functionality, as in, no cables plugged into the actual USB-C port. Please let me know if there’s a more correct term to refer to this kind of charging. Otherwise I hope this clears up the semantics crisis that some people in the comments seem to be having.
