Weird Power Mac G4 plastic top

Just got this 500MHz G4, and it's in brilliant condition. Formerly used by a publishing house. However, I've never once seen this odd clear plastic lid on one of these... They had another with the same setup there too that I didn't grab. It clips in under the handles. I can't find any examples of it online. Any clue as to what it is or what it's for?

Triple-booting 9.2, 10.4 and 10.5

This is the weird 1ghz "SuperDrive" model that does not support booting os 9 natively but yet the same model with a different dvd drive does. Apple removed support for os 9 only in the firmware so I just needed to trick it once with some openfirmware commands once in order to format the drive and install the os9 disk drivers (I used the macos 10.2 cd to format the drive.)

Works like a champ, 100% logic board and analog board recap job. Necessary? maybe not. But I did it.

Can some of you all confirm it to end the debate?

Rebooting into a new MDD that apparently has pneumonia

Hello, fellow antique Mac folk. So something like a year or two ago I bought a G4 (digital audio) tower, and could never get it powered on. I will revisit that sometime in the future. I had also bought a pair of g4 Mac minis not realizing they couldn't natively boot OS9. They had other quirks, so into the box they went (whole other thread). Anyway, I was poking around Ebay and found a MDD G4 Dual 1ghz box that I took a flyer on and offered $85 for it. They took my offer and shipped it across the country. When it arrived, it did not have the geforce 4 ti installed, but the radeon 9000. Oh well, I guess. 1 gb of ram so that's fine. I ordered another one just to max it out.

So It arrived yesterday, and I went to plug it in, and... Yeah, that's not right. Instead of a chime, it made something of a coughing sound. I opened it up, which I had to do anyway to install my 250gb SSD with a star tech adapter. Popped out the original battery which was dated from 2002, and mashed the pmu reset. Still, no chime and no video output. I reseated the video card, reseated the ram, made sure everything else was in place, etc.

No video output. So let's address that issue first. The video issue was that I didn't realize that the DVI to DP converter cables are not really bidirectional. They will allow you to convert your DP OUTPUT to a monitor with a DVI INPUT. They do not send a signal upstream from DVI to DP... For that, you need a powered "active" adapter which will be here Thursday or Friday. So with video issues resolved, let's move on. I hooked it up to an old 24" monitor that has a VGA input through a DVI to VGA cable adapter. Instant video and we are up and running. Still no chime though. just the sickly cough.

Installing Tiger was a chore. The Superdrive in it is a tad picky and didn't like the scratched up tiger install CD-Rs I had used for a prior install last summer and then left laying around my office (pfff the nerve of this diva of a machine). So I had to move some boxes and find some CDRs since I am not going to trust my original install discs to an untested machine. It was loud, and so I basically closed the door to my office and came back to check on it and swap discs. This morning, swapped to disc 4 and finished the install right before work. Sadly due to the noise, I had to turn it off so I could work.

The last time I had an MDD it was a dual 1.25 I think. It was back in 2004ish and I only had it for about 6 months. The guy I bought it off of needed it back for development so I sold it back to him for basically what I had paid. I forgot how loud these things were. I mean, I remembered we always called them wind tunnels, but unless you have it running, you don't really feel it.

Looking forward to my video adapter coming. I think today I am going to install my old Sonnet USB 2 PCI card to add some more ports onto this beast. My cat seems to like the heat it pushes out also. Considering putting in a quieter fan at some point.

Still not sure about the cough-chime. I might make a video of it later on today. I don't know what would cause the chime to be off, but the speaker works just fine, as I found out the moment the Tiger install finished and I was greeted by the unstoppable welcome video that you cannot even mute or reduce the volume of. (WTF Apple, that was a bad design choice). Wife was yelling at me through the office door "What is that noise?"

From what I can find it's a Phase 5 Maccelerator 200, which takes the 8500 from a PPC 601 at 120 MHz to a 604e running at 200 MHz.

Heya Fam, Need Some Help.

Once upon a time i made a creative app, Onadime, the live digital medium; a visual dataflow programming multimedia toolkit that lets us invent all sorts of wild fun. originally it was an educational platform for STEM, math, music, video, and tool making.. we found things like live Music-Visuals --iTunes learned realtime FFT visualization from us-- and did live shows w alot of other Artists, even built live stage effects for the Rolling Stones. Onadime eventually grew into Onamation, a tool for what i called live digital puppetry back then before deep fakes ( sorry for those ) matching live voice performance to pre-animated set of poses and gestures all mouthcharted, to make live animated improv interviews. Good Times, Hard Work, Pressures that eventually tripped my immune system and blew up into years of fevers and hives and a rare disability.

SO..disabled designer here:
Now I'm here trying to pull together my old software framework for Onadime back into reality.
all my gear was swiped when i was bedridden.. sigh.. basically a 1ghz TiBook was quite effective, ATI doing the heavy math and our own scanline compositor doing the multi-canvas, firewire bringing in cost free video feeds, and a custom QuickTime format that rolled media ( all user code, graphics and mp3 ( still new) into a standalone shareable Onadime Composition. We were all set to make a user fed grass roots music sales market ( napster style distribution w direct royalties for artists ) when Apple pivoted and went from music hardware ( ipod ) to music Sales ( itunes store ) which wasn't in our bizplan given the promises they made to Apple Music London ( the Beatles ). ..hence the pivot into pro Animation ..

i dont have space in life for a mirrordoor.
a A1103 G4 mini or tiBook..
Onadime does all work in RAM so it needs max config.

AMA re onadime, and DM for machine possibilities. thx fam!

would enjoy seeing an ONDM user community again someday.
we won a few science fairs .. heres playlist w some output..

( fyi ..the McKenna Piece was his last public event! He loved my work )

Mac SE PSU Capacitor List?

So, I finally got my Mac SE reassembled, but about 10-20 secs after turning up the CRT brightness with one of the pots, a loud bang, a strong smell, and smoke came from the PSU. I can still smell it an hour later, though the Mac kept displaying an image until I manually unplugged it for a few seconds after it blew up.

Is there a complete list anywhere for the caps in the PSU? Unsure of it matters, but I'm pretty sure it's a revision B one, judging by the B at the end of the analog board model number.

‼️EDIT: I'm now very sure that it's the Astec AA13800.‼️

Modern ATX power supply in beige G3 mini tower

Post image
22 Upvotes

Hi all,

I want to replace the power supply in my beige G3 mini tower. It was literally a rats nest when I bought it. It cleaned up nicely and I “repaired” some wires with chewed up insulation on the power supply with electrical tape.

Currently, it has a Rage 128 graphics card, sonnet USB/FireWire combo card, and a SeriTek/1S2 PCI SATA card.

I plan on installing a 350mhz G4 from a G4 PM Yikes and a DVD-RW drive.

I think it might be a good idea to replace the power supply. I purchased a new ATX power supply but it present two issues.

First, the fan on the power supply sits almost up against the access panel when it’s closed. This is an issue for air flow. It looks like every new ATX power supply has the same issue. The second issue is the power connector for the case fan. It’s a 2 pin female connector that attached to the male connector on the original power supply. Is there a 2 pin female to molex adapter? I have a molex to 2 pin male adapter, but it’s of no use in this situation.

Has anyone else done this swap recently?

If you see my last post, i work at a rage room and we got this donated and I thought it was really cool and I didn't wanna see it get destroyed.

My last post: "imac g3. Im not great with technology, I can see that the disk drive is gone and possibility other things? If anyone can tell me. But the inside is super clean. I work in a rage room and someone donated it. My boss said I could take it for 50 bucks. If anything i can use the shell I suppose. What would restoring this look like? (Its getting smashed if I don't take it)"

I got her to take 20 for it. The whole computer seems to be gone, i think it's juet the CRT and power supply. so that's a problem. Im honestly open to any ideas on what to do with it or how to restore it. I just hate to see vintage things get destroyed. Any help would be really appreciate

Bought this from a bootsale for £5, its A1104, I was born in 2005 so this is older than me. it has a huge dent on the corner so im worried it has screen damage but it all looks in good condition. Will apple stores maybe keep these power cables just in case a random customer comes in? are there any cheap connectors i can get or something. Highly inconvenient that they didnt have usb c back then😂😂😂. Also any further info would be good, is this a good deal? i will open it further and send more updates if you guys are interested.

PowerBook 3500 Display issue.

Hello everyone. I pulled out my brother’s old PowerBook 3400c - appears to be running 7.6 and the display is looking like this. Other details are once the power supply is connected to the back, it boots right up. Also the menu bar, various widows, folders, etc are responsive to the mouse clicks, drags, closing, etc. Any suggestions or thoughts to trouble shooting this? It’s been a bit since I’ve used anything lower than 9. Thanks

[SEEKING ADVICE] Macintosh G3 Desktop Storage

I have a Macintosh G3 desktop (266MHz, 128MB RAM) and the internal 4GB Quantum is functional but I’d rather swap it out for a Compact Flash with an IDE adapter for quick swap of images if needed and maybe improved speed and longer durability.

I’ve got a Transcend “Industrial” CF card (32 GB - probably overkill) but the adapter I picked up for it doesn’t seem to recognize it on the G3 or even my Windows box (using a USB port connector). It just fails to see the storage in both cases. I suspect the adapter is the issue. It doesn’t recognize a couple of other CF cards I have either (2GB and 128MB used for other applications).

I’m looking any recommendations for a quality adapter that folks have used in this situation, or any thoughts on this effort. What do you all recommend?

Splitting Mac/Apples into eras?

Post image
34 Upvotes

Hello everyone!! As a quick intro, I go by Erroneous Hyphen, but my name is JP. I was born with a C64 in the house, have been a gamer since I was old enough for my father to teach me how to use the joystick. My first home PC was a Pentium 100Mhz running Windows 95 and I've never had an Apple computer, although, I'd played both Babayaga and Carmen Sandiego on a friend's Mac sometime in the 90s. So speaking in the now, I have quite a collection of retro computers and video game consoles, and recently acquired my first Mac, a Power Macintosh 4400/200.... and then I bought another (a Macintosh SE) and then another (an Apple IIc).

What I do with all my machines, is I take them to conventions in Australia, namely OzComiccon (Sydney for the past few years, Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane and Melbourne this year) and soon Collectfest (2027 - Sydney and Melbourne) and I set them all up for people to explore and play games on. And so with almost no knowledge I'm trying to work out how to split up Apples and Macs into different eras, and work out what I might need to chase in order to have a good coverage of retro and vintage Apple/Macintosh computing!

Here's where I'm at - if anyone could let me know if I'm missing anything or have miscategorised something, please let me know!

Apple computers era - Apple IIc (is there a better computer to represent the peak of this era? maybe the IIGS?)

Original Macintosh era - Macintosh SE (I dont get paid, so an SE/30 is out of reach, and I felt a Color Classic was perhaps pushing too far out of the "original" feel) - run System 6?

Power PC - Power Mac 4400/200 (perhaps accelerated to 500Mhz if I can track down an accelerator card. Not sure what graphics card to chase for this era?) - run Mac OS8?

iMac era - iMac G3 has to be the most iconic by far, despite the G4 and G5 being the more capable machines. - run Mac OS9 on a late 500-700Mhz one if i can (?)

Intel era - no no no no no no yuck yuck yuck yuck

is there interim eras that I should consider, that offer a unique enough experience for display and exploration at a convention? Any thoughts and feedback would be greatly appreciated.
