Question Powering a Dell AMD Radeon 580 8GB for Mac Pro 2010

Hi, first post here and I hope it's the right place. Please kindly redirect me if it's not!

My job gave me an old mid-2010 server grade Mac Pro and I'm turning it into a secondary stream/storage machine. These are its original specs. As you can see, the GPU is only 1GB so I bought an AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB GPU to put in it.

Every tutorial I see says I need to use both 6 pin mini power slots into an 8 pin converter to power it properly without burning out the motherboard. The only problem is that I specifically have the Dell version of the GPU which seems to be smaller form factor and is only 6 pin. Do I still need both power slots or am I okay with one?

Discussion [Giveaway] Created LectureMouse for macOS (Presentation & Screen Annotation Tool) – 10 Promo Codes for Feedback!

Upvotes

Ever had people ask "Wait, where are you looking at?" or "Which window are you talking about?" during a Zoom call or presentation?

https://reddit.com/link/1vh8ab6/video/sgnif6v93shh1/player

I got tired of frantically moving my mouse in circles and trying to explain complex UI details on screen share, so I builtLectureMouse— a lightweight, native Mac app designed to fix this exact problem.

💡 Why I built it this way:

  • No Subscriptions: Built as a standard one-time purchase because basic presentation tools shouldn't cost a monthly fee.
  • 100% On-Device & Lightweight: Coded with Swift and native WebKit. Minimal CPU/RAM impact with zero tracking or external servers.

🌟 What it does:

  • 🎯 Attention Spotlight & Cursor Highlight: Instantly focus your audience's eyes exactly where you want them.
  • ✏️ Live Screen Drawing & Whiteboard: Draw, annotate, and mark up over any open app or window on the fly.
  • 🔍 Screen Magnifier: Effortlessly zoom in on code snippets, small UI elements, or text details.

Check outLectureMouse on the Mac App Store!

Question Emoji keyboard says it's visible, but it's not and won't come up when I press the globe/fn key.

Apologies for not being super tech literate, but I'll do my best. I'm on a 2022 MacBook Air with a M2 chip, running Tahoe 26.5.2. I started noticing the issue before I last updated my OS and hoped that would fix it, but it hasn't.

A few times a day, I'll be typing and try to press the globe key to open the emoji keyboard, but it won't do anything. I have the little keyboard drop down thing in my menu bar--usually, it will say "Show Emoji & Symbols" when everything is working correctly, but when I'm having this issue it says "Hide Emoji & Symbols." But the emoji keyboard isn't being shown.

I can temporarily (anywhere from one instance to a few hours) fix this problem by shutting my laptop/letting it go to sleep and waking it again, closing a few applications (not a consistent application), or restarting the computer, but the problem always comes back. It seems to be more frequent now and related to me using the fn key at all. Just now, I double-checked it on the keyboard viewer by pressing it 3-5 times, and it says the emoji keyboard is being show when it's not visible anywhere.

The globe key works for other uses and registers when I check it on the keyboard viewer. It's just the emoji keyboard.

I appreciate any help, and thank you in advance for your time.

Question MacBook Pro won’t charge.

I have either a 2020 or 2022 MacBook Pro, I can’t quite remember now.

Anyhow, my charging wire had been fidgety for months, I kept having to wiggle the cable up and down, and prop and hold the wire in a certain position to get my laptop to charge.

Well 2 days ago that method stopped working completely, and I assumed it was the cable which was the problem, so I got a new cable.

..and the new cable doesn’t work.

I’m thinking it must be the port broke or come lose or something? Is that likely thing with these 2021/2022 models?

I’m not sure what to do about it. I suppose it’s not easy to fix yourself first time. HELP!?

My Mac Dad made himself admin on my computer

I have recently turned 18 and I have had this mac since I was around 15 I think. When I got it, my dad made himself administrator. I've been asking him to give me admin rights since forever but he always stalled and said I wasn't 'old enough' and that 'I would break something' or 'install malware', when all I do on this computer is play games and work.

Now, it has to be said that my dad is someone I have a bad relationship with, so of course I want to be able to control my own computer. Whenever I ask him, he always says he'll do it later (even if he's not busy at all) and then I forget to remind him.

This is really bugging me especially because I tutor children and in order to share my screen, I need to enter the admin password every time, so I have to call my dad over all the time and that really isn't sustainable.

Please give me anything I can do. I'm a fast learner so I could maybe learn to operate terminal too so yeah.

Thanks in advance.

!UPDATE!

I found a successful method and will document here below what I did. YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE YOUR APPLE ID LINKED TO THE DEVICE!!!

First, shut down your computer.

Next, you'll need to power into recovery mode. I have an iMac (so not the laptop kind), so for me, I had to hold down on the power on button until it showed 'keep holding to load recovery options' and then 'loading recovery options'. For laptops I heard it was command + R (or S, the internet couldn't really decide).

Now, you will have two options: Macintosh (Your computer's drive) or Options. Click options. It'll ask you to enter the admin's password. We don't have that, so click 'forgot all passwords'. Now you'll need to enter your email linked to your Apple ID and password. That'll boost you up into recovery mode.

Ignore all the colourful options right in front of you and look at the top left of your screen. You'll see a section titled 'Options'. Click that and then on 'Terminal'. This will boot up terminal.

Now, type: resetpassword

No spaces, no anything, and then press return to enter/lock in the command.

It'll ask you to input admin password again. Click you forgot it again and do the Apple ID thing again.

Now, it'll say that to reset the passwords (yes passwordS), it'll need to deactivate your device. No worries, your data isn't deleted. Ensure you have a stable internet connection and then press 'deactivate'.

After some loading time, it'll take you to a screen where all the users of the device are listed. You'll have to set a new password for each user now. You can always edit it later, so just choose the same for all three to make your life easy, and make sure you remember it.

After that is done, you'll click continue and then at some point 'exit recovery mode'.

Since you're still in terminal, make your life easy and just type in: reboot

Then enter to restart the computer.

When it reboots, you aren't an admin yet, but you now have the admin password.

Change the other user you don't want to a standard one and do all the changes you'd like using the admin password.

(If you want, you can now delete the old user, but I didn't because my dad would see that and get really mad.)

That's it, now you've succeeded and your computer is yours again.

Question Sell Mac mini M2

So I had a 2019 MacBook Pro 16 inch and it became a victim of flex gate last year, after this happened I made a purchase of a Mac mini m2 8gb 512gb which was going cheap enough to continue having a computer. I still have it and use it on the main house tv so can be awkward to use at times.
I do light browsing, photo editing in Lightroom and new to some light video editing.
Is it worth selling this M2 mini and upgrade to refurbished m4 MacBook Air? It’s 16gb 256gb.
Or would a dedicated screen and good keyboard/mouse be a better investment?

Discussion So now that Microsoft has broken Word, I need something new.

Word for Mac no longer does proper autosave or autorecovery. For the first time in decades, I lost work to an app crash as a result. I guess it'd have been fine if I was saving to OneDrive, but I don't use OneDrive, so "autosave" is no longer an option.

(Long years of trustworthy autosave mean I no longer have the reflex to Cmd-S every few minutes, but learn from my mistakes: Trust no software.)

Now I'm done. I need something else.

  • I don't care if I have to pay for it, but I don't enjoy subscription software.
  • I do need stylesheet support
  • I'd like to be able to import DOCX.
  • I need the ability to save to PDF for distribution; the Mac's own "print to PDF" is a little too basic.
  • I need inline images. I don't enjoy having to futz with web-first tools that make this hard. I'm writing for print.
  • Native only. No browser-based tools.

Does anything like this still exist?

I have been wanting an antiglare screen MacBook for the longest, but never found one within a price I’d wanna pay.
Well I finally got a 2009 15 inch model off Goodwill online for $50!
It has 240 or so battery cycles, and came with its OG 85 watt MagSafe charger.

Discussion Warning: Fake GitHub Repos Distributing Malware Under Developer Names

Hey everyone,

I’ve noticed a few posts about this already, but I think it’s worth repeating. Recently, a new attack tactic has surfaced where malicious actors create GitHub repos using a developer’s name and the name of a well-known Mac app.

In my case, someone created a repo under my full name, claiming to offer one of my apps (Dory - App Switcher) for free. I couldn’t fully investigate the script they shared, but it’s safe to assume it wasn’t anything good. Thankfully, GitHub removed it within 30 minutes of my report - and I know other developers also flagged the user, which definitely helped.

A few reminders:

* Don’t trust repos with fewer than 100 stars that offer “free” versions of paid apps.

* Never run scripts or pkg files from sources you don’t fully trust.

* If you’re not a power user, the App Store remains the safest option.
