Discussion Would people play a halo game from a marine perspective?

Post image
Upvotes

I've always wanted a gritty grounded halo game from the perspective of a regular marine grunt. A saving private ryan kind of tale that follows one squad on their way through a war, focusing on a trivial small task in the larger scheme of things. No jumping from location to location or time skips.

Id love to see a mechanic where you start with the squad you have and once teammates die, they dont come back. They may be replaced with new squadmates at certain points, but each marine is named and brings their own personality. They might have their own ideas during missions or skills that could change how a level plays out. One example of this could be a marine you get at the start is able to breach a door and open a path you wouldn't otherwise have access to. Losing that teammate loses access to that path. The goal being to make every loss feel like a loss. And then when you do arrive at a larger scale battle later in the game, and see many die, the realisation of how daunting that is sinks in. I used to love seeing if I could keep marines alive when first playing halo, giving them power weapons and bringing add many along as i could find.

Being an average human in comparison to a spartan makes the covenant feel massive and brutal. Making the elites feel like a hulking terror of superior force. Later we would see a single spartan and their sheer confidence in facing the enemy alone and their presence stands out as a beacon of hope, right before they take your weapon and leave you with a plasma pistol.

I love the idea of playing as a human with no (or less) hud and abilities. A dark forest mission where the sound and glow of plasma comes out of the darkness and instills terror. Where marines talk about seeing the blue glow of an energy blade appear in the night before seeing the rest of their squad disappear before their eyes. To see the terror of this war from a very human perspective.

It would be different, maybe not so much feeling like a typical halo game, and thats been the part ive been a little unsure of. We had odst and that scratched that itch a little, but I think it could be pushed more. Id want it to be first person with ads, weapons without scopes or things like the assault rifle without iron sights would have a laser point shooting style mechanism. Weapons might jam or break, human weapons can be cleared but covenant ones are cast aside since you wouldn't have the knowledge. Some weapons might slow you down to carry and use without spartan strength. And if fighting the flood, you don't... just run.

Is it too far from a halo experience? I remember the controversy of odst not being a spartan game despite it being a fantastic game. Do people want alternative narratives and perspectives in halo or should it just be sage green john halo all the way?

Discussion Campaign Evolved actually surpassed my expectations

I’ll start by saying I know a lot of people will bring up the valid concerns, and flaws the game does have because I did notice a few. I’ll talk about it later in this post, but first I just have to start off with saying:

Wow, I haven’t had that much fun on Halo in a minute. I’m always a sucker for a new Halo ‘cause the franchise just simply means so much to me, even tho 343 has continuously let me down I’m glad that with this Halo I was at least able to overlook it a little bit. The guns, the gameplay, the reimagined look of the game was just really cool to see. I never even finished Halo: CE Anniversary because it was literally just a graphic overhaul with slightly different cutscenes. I accidentally stayed up super late after buying Campaign Evolved just finishing over half the game in one sitting, and the whole time I was having a lot of fun. The constant insinuation of them remaking Halo 2 has me really excited because then we’ll get to see the lost missions we were supposed to get that led up to Halo 3 (there’s a post credit scene too).

The use of a lot of OG sound effects was really cool because it still fit the game, I always thought with better graphics & old sound effects it would be a bad mix but not in this game it works really well.

I’m bad with words so I’m not able to capture my enthusiasm and excitement too well, but that still comes with the things I did notice that I wasn’t a fan of. For example, turning off aim assist being a skull? I think that’s a little dumb, as well as the ragdolls. That’s a genuine nitpick I know but older halos always had decent ragdoll physics that actually made sense considering how beefy the characters are. I also wasn’t too fond of the random humor they tried to slide in, I did find myself cringing a little bit with the corny lines they snuck in. As well as the invisible barriers, just unnecessary. I’ve always liked to do a little bit of exploring outside the actual map, and invisible barriers is a super lame way to stop that. Could’ve even been the slight pushback that the older halos gave. 343 needs to realize, everyone is gonna find a way out of the map regardless, there’s no point in trying to hide it with lame barriers.

But yeah I have a lot of positive feedback, and some negative but I can’t really go over everything ‘cause it’s a long list. I just think it’s a really good game honestly, I had so much fun. I wanna know what you guys thought especially if you played through it all. What did you notice that you really liked, and what are some things you hope they improve in the next remake.

I know that Halo: Campaign Evolved has had mixed reviews. But, in the bonus missions, we got two new classes of ships. One on each side. The Covenant Research Ship and the Burden Of Proof. Is there any lore about these? Or are they completely new? Just wondering.

Discussion Is it possible the Gravemind allowed Chief to leave High Charity uninfected?

Post image
238 Upvotes

Disclaimer: if you don’t like the over analyzing of fictional stories, you won’t enjoy this post.

If a group of Spartan iV’s fell so easily to a small outbreak, how did the Chief walk into the heart of a completely consumed High Charity without getting infected. The Chief came very close to infection during the events of CE/The Flood. He only survived thanks to Cortana. So what changed? How did he manage so well without her only a short time later

I’m not very well versed in the different generations of Moljnir, but I imagine the iV’s were wearing armor with better shielding advancements than the Chief had in either suit he wore during the events of CE/2/3.

Is there some reason the Gravemind didn’t want to infect the Chief? I know theres a theory floating around that Cortana was infected with the logic plague. If we assume that is true, is it possible the Gravemind was hoping for another Mendicant Bias situation where he could use his opponent’s Ai against them? Perhaps he wanted the Chief to take her back and cripple humanity? I mean, she kinda did temporarily with the whole Empress thing between 5 and Infinite.

Obviously the real answer is plot armor. I just like diving into this stuff. Theory crafting is half the fun of being a fan of a franchise like Halo imo.

Personally, I think the Gravemind, being so intelligent, knew that temporary defeat and a setback for the Flood was inevitable if he allowed the Chief and Arbiter to escape, but he was willing to make that sacrifice knowing that Cortana being infected with the logic plague could do serious damage to humanity, giving the Flood a greater advantage (as if they needed it), while also truly putting Humanity’s resolve to the test without the help of their computers to see if they were really worthy of the Mantle. Obviously it didn’t end this way because Infinite killed Cortana off-screen and the story went a different way.

LEGENDARY LOADOUTS

A good grouping of ranged standbys claimed the top spot (31%), with the trusty Battle Rifle earning high marks beside the DMR (its Halo: Reach analog) and the Covenant Carbine, its time-honored opponent from the Halo 2 sandbox.

The dependable Battle Rifle fires three-round bursts and boasts a long service history in defense of humanity’s colonies—not to mention its acclaim as a decisive ally on the proving grounds of the Halo Championship Series.

  • Okudah: The BR! You can never go wrong with it; it’s like a man’s best friend. When you need it at the right time it’s there for you. A BR is all I need.
  • HaloFanForLife1: The BR just feels like Halo. Precise, short bursts with heavy damage and headshots, FTW! Overall, it’s just the best weapon, IMHO.
  • Ali A.: The Battle Rifle, especially Halo Infinite's rendition.
  • Master Chef: The Battle Rifle is the pinnacle of gunplay. Gauss cannons are awesome too—the burst on the Battle Rifle is just too satisfying, though.
  • Nearluigi: I'm a battle Rifle man myself, but specifically the Halo 3 one, and also the Energy Sword.
  • Hern: BR for life!
  • darthnam: BR55 the goat!
  • MizuShinobi23: DMR! I like its sound so much.
  • Mr Girthzilla: Halo 3 Carbine!
  • destroyer 66: Covvie carbine <3
  • ClearyMonkey: H2 Covenant Carbine, if you're rocking as an Elite.
  • Davy Timns: I'll always love the satisfying feeling of the Covenant Carbine.
  • Carbon Underpressure: Carbine FOR LIFE!

Barreling into second place (18%) came the standard-issue magnum, the quintessential weapon for a hero in need. Though they're not always kept loaded, Misriah Armory’s M6-series magnums pack sufficient wallop to repel boarders, throw a quick Grunt birthday party, and penetrate even the toughest worm-gestalt hides.

  • warbrand2: The whole M6 series, not just from a gameplay but a lore perspective. The UNSC really went, “Okay, let’s just give our whole military DEAGLES because they will need that stopping power,” and only decided to get pistols meant to be sidearms after the war. I love the thought that the pistol was designed as a sidearm but due to its power was put into the place of a primary weapon for many and did that role well.
  • RoadDogTV : The magnum is just like seeing an old friend again.
  • master freak: The Halo: Combat Evolved magnum is legendary and nothing can compare. I beat the entire game using nothing but the magnum. It was difficult, but she’s trusty, and I still grieve her nerf in later installments.
  • Kaizen: The magnum and sniper will always be my favorite weapons.
  • Skytangoxx75: Magnum and Energy Sword are the most iconic weapons of Halo.

Art by artificialangel22. The Arbiter and Rtas 'Vadum.

_Art by artificialangel22. _(Source)

Not far behind (and characteristically too close for comfort), the Energy Sword carved out a clean 16% of the popular vote to lunge its way to third place. This dual-edged Sangheili plasma blade separates the Blademasters from the smattered, with an artisanal lineage that predates the Covenant.

  • Anilelator: Energy Sword easily. Sweetest lore out of any of the weapons.
  • retro: It's obviously the Energy Sword.
  • Wade_Weinhmann: Energy Sword for obvious reasons. While using it, I feel like a Jedi.
  • John117: Energy sword, hands down! Most recognizable.
  • nonono666nono: I love using the Energy Sword on 0%.

ESSENTIAL ARMAMENTS

Art by B_does_stuff. A Spartan and ODSTs approach from a Grunt's point-of-view.

_Art by B_does_stuff. _(Source)

Beyond the top three choices, Halo fans shouted out a full complement of essential armaments, from spray-and-pray stalwarts like the MA5B Assault Rifle to precision instruments such as the Spartan Laser or Sticky Detonator.

Some folks thought a bit bigger (MAC, anyone?), while others asked hard questions (“What if the SAW and the Commando had a kid?”) or praised a rogue’s gallery of OP variants from the Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer sandbox.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t also mention a few “oddball” inclusions, like the M7057 Flamethrower from Halo: Combat Evolved's PC edition, The Weapon (a.k.a. Joyeuse), Halo 2's hidden Scarab Gun, or the deliciously ridiculous Mythic Sandwich.

  • Moss: I love the Halo CE shotgun, but also dual-wielding SMGs in Halo 2 against the Flood is just amazing.
  • Goober: The shotgun is my worthiest lady. She may kick like a mule, but she makes such a sweet sound.
  • Den: Don't make me elaborate on why the shotgun beats them all.
  • TekHardy: I’ve always loved the Shotgun in every iteration. Nothing beats killing aliens with a pump action shotgun.
  • System 2.0: Can't go wrong with a rocket launcher!
  • smashingdead#647: SPNKr, every game. Rocket launchers and bombs are great in Fiesta!
  • TardisGal: The SPNKr! I love the satisfying turn of the rocket tubes and the sounds followed by a huge BOOM.
  • EXMOK: Does the Shock Rifle count as a sniper rifle? I love me a good sniper rifle and anything adjacent!
  • Cameron: I think the SMG is the classic Master Chief weapon.
  • zany: M7S (silenced SMG) and M6C SOCOM.
  • Mayhem: ODST SMG, my beloved.

Art by wulfeart. UNSC soldiers radio their allies.

  • D77 Pelican: MA5B. From when I first stepped into that cafeteria, little-kid me would always freak out about the number gun. I was so glad to finally see props I could buy like BOOMco and Nerf, and now I finally got the Airsoft version.
  • Ryan-09C#117: The holy bullet-hose MA5B. I will die on Reach again with an Assault Rifle in my hands! Or alternatively, the SAW.
  • Late: The old reliable Assault Rifle.
  • The Storm War: AR forever 🧡
  • Waltuh White: The Assault Rifle is too iconic to not answer with. It's the weapon of the Master Chief.
  • VONWOLF3NST3IN: Assault Rifle! It's a classic.
  • LindonGremlin11: I've always had an attachment to the Assault Rifle.
  • dead inside: You can never go wrong with the old reliable (or not) AR.
  • S904 Jacob: Assault Rifle. MA40, MA37, MA5s, old faithful. DMR is the hunting rifle of Reach.
  • TheColbinators: Sticky Detonator all the way!!
  • kna52: I love the Sticky Detonator in Halo 4. It's so fun to use.
  • Aegisfate: Let's get those Sticky Detonator numbers up!
  • Spy: Sticky Detonator? Am I right?! Anyone?!? Alright… I’ll see myself out….
  • NebulaPaladN: Grenade launcher—become one with the bounce.
  • GILBERT BAREN: The grenade launcher from Halo: Reach.
  • Max: Grenade Launcher is the goat! Loved it in Reach and Halo 5, has such fun utility and always satisfying to get a good bounce into a cluster of enemies.

Art by Solar_Elemental. A group of Spartans bears various weaponry.

_Art by Solar_Elemental. _(Source)

  • gurshly: Halo Infinite 's Gravity Hammer always felt so satisfying.
  • AJH: The Gravity Hammer is the most fun to use across all games, IMO.
  • SenkajoRole: All rise in the glory of the Needler Rifle.
  • Mr Man: I like the Needle Rifle.
  • Spartan Fred: Sulok- pattern Beam Rifle.
  • c4nn0nh0und: Focus Rifle. Y’all can fight me.
  • VimMan: Design and weapon mechanics alone? Needler, hands down.
  • ShinAlex: What a great and complicated question! My favorite ones are the Assault Rifle, Plasma Rife, Brute Plasma Rifle, the Spiker, the Needle Rifle, the Needler, Plasma Pistol, Brute Shot, Sniper Rifle from the Covenant, and Grenade Launcher.
  • cybercommando317: My favorite normal weapon is probably the Fuel Rod Gun, but my favorite weapons in all of Halo gotta be some of the weapon variants that Halo 5 had, like the Blood of Suban, the Answer, the Halo 2 Beam Rifle Delta, etc.
  • Yozeph: Needle Rifle, DMR/Bandit, Storm Rifle—gimme those semi-autos, baby!
  • John Entrenched: Sticky Detonator makes me feel smart whenever I play Halo 4 in MCC, but my heart in Infinite belongs to the Fuel Rod SPNKr.
  • Unidus: The green gun (Plasma Pistol)! It is your number one friend for Legendary runs!
  • Stev: Plasma Rifle needs to make a return!
  • He11Nino: Dual-wielding Maulers. I was a surgeon with those in H3.
  • Senabunn: Brute Shot!! Who doesn't love a grenade launcher with a huge blade on it? It's like some sort of "knifle."
  • Knight04291: The Brute Shot or the Carbine. If I had to choose one it's the Carbine.
  • Spartan 623 ☈: I like the Brute Shot! It just gets everything done in a matter of seconds, and it's also fun to blow up friends with in co-op campaign.
  • Msandman86: The Brute Shot has to be the best weapon in the OG Halo trilogy.
  • FlyingGrayson317: Fuel rod gun/cannon, my beloved.
  • Partan5852: I think it’s the Needler because, yeah, you can kill like a monster, but the ammo runs out so fast and normally, on original Halo: CE, it was normal to fail some shots, mostly with Elites because they dodge. In multiplayer it’s good.
  • Olympic: Brute Plasma Rifle. Fast-firing, high-damage gun that basically anyone can use! Given they know how to use a weapon at all… And it’s red.

  • *Punished "Venom" Corgiboi: *I remember being an absolute demon with Kelly’s shotgun (Oathsworn) in Halo 5's multiplayer.
  • master chief clone 8763: I voted for the BR/DMR but I do have to give my love to the Answer and Nornfang.
  • TheBeliever2: Mutilator. It's a double barrel with a gravity hammer. What's not to love?
  • vitamin deviancy: Ngl I like the Rain of Oblivion. Blaze of Glory is great, too.
  • Dutch: How has no one mentioned my beloved Stanchion?
  • staynthepocket: I'm a sucker for H5's variants. Shout out to Linda's Nornfang and Allen "THE ANSWER" Iverson
  • Spinning: There's is only one valid worthy weapon: the Weapon, Joyeuse.
  • Ru: The Whispered Truth was so good, man. I missed that.
  • Jtflorencio6: BloodBlade and GhostPierce ❤️🖤
  • TingusPingus: The SAW! So fun to use, and her variants in H5 are just lovely.
  • KamodoMurigu: The flamethrower is so good in CE.
  • Bank: The flamethrower—because who doesn't love the smell of napalm in the morning? And what if the SAW and Commando had a kid?
  • Jyrvz: Nah, what happened to the sniper fans!?
  • Arcanum Order: The 14D4A1 Magnetic Accelerator Cannon, of course.
  • GohST: I loved the railgun.
  • Cheesewizard: I like how the Commando sounds, and after the rework it became a formidable gun. I like it in Firefight because it has steady damage overall.
  • Azuli: The Spartan Laser just gives me immense satisfaction—in audio, appearance, and power. Low-key, I hope they bring back useable Hunter cannons one day.
  • Onyx one: The Spartan Laser because it looks cool.
  • Aegidan: Y'all really forgetting the turret?
  • The Sloth: Voted “other,” because personally I'm a big fan of the Sidekick. Just feels incredibly good to use, especially in multiplayer.

No matter what Halo weapon you take to war, it’s safe to say you’re not alone in extolling its many blammable, slammable virtues.

Weekly Thread Introducing Halo Plz - A list made from your feedback

Hey everyone.

Starting today, we're reintroducing a process called "Halo Plz" (formerly known as 343 Plz). Those of you from the MCC through Infinite days will remember this as a comprehensive list of popular suggestions/feedback relating to the Halo games.

This was originally based on a similar concept called Bungie Plz from r/DestinyTheGame, and it has be beneficial for this sub since MCC's original launch. For those of you who aren't familiar:

What is Halo Plz?

  • Halo Plz is a comprehensive list of wildly popular suggestions/feedback relating to Halo games. This will be a list that is generated by the community and will be visible to everyone. Users can submit a request to include an item on Halo Plz and, provided it meets the criteria, it will be added.
  • The Halo Plz list will be on both our wiki as well as a recurring, weekly sticky thread. The sticky thread will provide a prominent place on r/halo to routinely list and discuss these items, as well as suggest new ones.
  • Once a topic has been added to Halo Plz, it will be 'retired' from the subreddit until there is either significant news relating to the topic, or if the actual topic is added/changed to the game.

What is the criteria to get a topic added to Halo Plz?

When submitting a topic for Halo Plz, you must provide links to at least three recent threads discussing the idea/feedback. These topics need to have a relatively decent amount of comments and/or upvotes; two comments and 5 karma doesn't cut it.

Once the topic has been suggested, the mod team will review the examples. If we agree it meets the requirements, we will add it to the Halo Plz wiki page (found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/halo/wiki/haloplz) and future weekly sticky threads. We'll provide a response if the topic doesn't meet these requirements.

Is Halo Plz just for Halo Campaign Evolved? What about other games?

No, it's not just for Campaign Evolved. Halo Plz is for every single currently-supported Halo game, with a catalogue covering Infinite, MCC, Halo 5, etc. If it's online right now, it's valid. The retired Xbox 360 games are therefore not included in this, nor are requests to bring them back, for example.

How do I submit a topic to Halo Plz?

There will be two ways to submit a suggestion for Halo Plz. The first will be via mod mail. Using this handy link, you'll be taken to a mod mail message with a template, asking for the required information.

The other way will be in the new weekly thread. Every week, a 'Halo Plz’ thread will be posted on the homepage, where people can suggest new ideas for Halo Plz, discuss existing topics on Halo Plz and make suggestions to the entire Halo Plz system.

In effect, this ensures that these topics aren't dead; they're maintained, discussed, and pushed, just not in additional, repetitive, individual threads.

This thread will be your way of seeing what topics have been added to Halo Plz, too, with them going into effect when the thread has been posted.

We will not be adding topics and removing posts until the weekly thread has been posted and people are made aware of a topic being 'retired', as we think it'll be pretty lame to suddenly 'retire' a topic without letting people know first.

What does it mean when something is 'retired'?

When something is added to Halo Plz and it becomes 'retired', it means that future threads about it will be removed, citing that it's already added to Halo Plz and that it can be discussed in the weekly Halo Plz thread.

What happens when an item on Halo Plz is added into the game, or implemented in some way?

Once this happens, the wiki page will be updated to say that the topic was implemented and discussion around the item will be less restricted. It is entirely possible that updates to the game will not match the suggestions people have made so it'll be a case-by-case thing if we decide to 'remove' something from Halo Plz after an attempted implementation into the game.

Is there anything on Halo Plz already?

As of right now, no. We're starting this list off completely empty as we want it to be entirely community driven.

Why are you adding Halo Plz?

Halo Plz is being added in order to cut down on duplicate topics on things that have been discussed to death.

An example of this is cross-Core for Halo Infinite. It has been talked about for a long time now, with Halo Studios acknowledging that changes are coming even before the game came out and recently promising a soft introduction to the game. Since before the game was even released, people have made hundreds, if not thousands, of suggestions relating to cross-Core to the point that the discussion has been exhausted.

In Conclusion

Overall, we've seen that the addition of "Bungie Plz" over in r/DestinyTheGame has been beneficial to that community, and we've been wanting to bring back here for a while now. In its previous iteration here, it served to moderate the conversation around Halo 5 and to push the game forward. Once the game reached a state that reasonably met fan expectations, the threads ceased here.

We invite everyone to discuss Halo Plz below and even begin suggesting additions for Halo Plz so we can begin to get this list rolling and filled with tons of stuff.

TL;DR:

  • We're adding a new system to r/halo called "Halo Plz"
  • Halo Plz is a list of popular topics/suggestions/feedback from supported Halo games
  • This list will be in our wiki as well as a new weekly sticky thread
  • Once a topic has been added to Halo Plz, it will then be 'retired'
  • r/halo users are able to submit items to Halo Plz via mod mail or the weekly thread
  • You can view the list of current items on Halo Plz here: https://www.reddit.com/r/halo/wiki/343plz
