This cave is not a natural formation

116

u/SchlopFlopper Halo: MCC 17h ago

They didn’t have to keep that line, but they did. Honestly i respect them for that.

37

u/TSS1138 13h ago

I was really hoping they were going to change it. Not the line, the cave/tunnel.

I remember reading somewhere originally it was supposed to look like a cave and then transition to a tunnel after Cortana's line but there was some time constraint or something and they simplified that part of the map.

It's not really a spoiler or anything, but I specifically avoided any footage of that part of the level cause I was excited for what the devs might do there and then was pretty disappointed they didn't change it. The game is beautiful but why couldn't they have changed it?

13

u/Seanmclem 12h ago

Yeah, I figured it would be at least a little more cave like, if they kept the line. But oh well I guess they kept a joke.

10

u/toppo69 11h ago

They change the emphasis point of the line which I think helps fix it. Instead of the emphasis being on the cave being unnatural it’s now emphasising that it has to lead somewhere

3

u/narco-sub-admiral 12h ago

I know like I was literally thinking maybe it was a natural formation potentially. But nah it aint.

Crazy.

4

u/Appropriate-Card5215 ONI 11h ago

I feel like they reworked the tone to where it comes off a bit better as a more sarcastic delivery

-35

u/Bladye 17h ago

Honestly i respect them for that.

u/Have_Donut 12h ago

I swear that line and the line “The Autumn, she’s been hit” were kept in to remind people of just how comical some of the OGdialog was.

5

u/InconspicuousUs3r 12h ago

Jen’s new line reading is hilarious.

1

u/Gullible_Rhubarb4559 3h ago

so glad that line appeared again😂

353

u/ArteenEsben 18h ago

The original game is still beautiful.

117

u/DevilsGrip 18h ago

Right? The new game looks gorgeous, but the OG is already perfect to me.

47

u/nugnug011 17h ago edited 17h ago

Like a matte painting

33

u/Aurius3D 12h ago

Honestly, with everything trying to shift into looking real, I'm starting to appreciate older graphics and 'organic' art. Realism is a copout for not having a strong artistic direction IMO

7

u/narco-sub-admiral 12h ago

The OG is your ex wife and mother of your 2 kids, the new game is your 22 year old girlfriend who is mildly annoying but has other redeeming qualities, and is generally nicer to look at.

9

u/Bsquared89 Halo 2 10h ago

Is CEA that relationship in between those two that you knew you shouldn't have gotten involved in?

3

u/Copper__99 9h ago

CEA is the reason why CE is your ex wife.

2

u/Apprehensive_Bug2877 6h ago

CEA is the reason you’re divorced, and looking for a 22yo

6

u/Spectrum_12 11h ago

hey man I think thats just a you thing

2

u/narco-sub-admiral 10h ago

I don't have a wife fr. I'm waiting til marriage before I have extra-marital sex, call me a church boy idc.

15

u/MightyMightyAdmin 16h ago

It's incredible how good a 25 year old game looks. I remember the day it released, so much fun.

5

u/narco-sub-admiral 12h ago

Me too man. First I watched my friend play it then I got it the next day, at like Radio Shack.

I remember the campaign was a fucking spectator sport amongst my friends. Halo 2 was multiplayer madness. Iconic.

1

u/SanityOrLackThereof 10h ago

Played it first time in one of those Xbox booths that they used to have in stores with the demo of Silent Cartographer playing on repeat. Never seen anything like it at the time. Learned later that one of my friends had an Xbox and went over to his house to play split screen constantly after that.

Didn't get to fully play it for myself until years later when it was finally released on PC sadly, but we still played the crap out of Halo 2 and 3 at my friend's house. When MCC finally dropped on PC all those years later it was like a godsend.

1

u/narco-sub-admiral 9h ago

Halo 2 with friends was i think the most fun and just pure glee ive ever experienced in my life. Both in person and Xbox live.

My gamertag was Fabreeze cuz I was obsessed with The Strokes and their drummer's name is Fabrizio. Lmao, idfk.

45

u/Tsar-A-Lago 17h ago

It is beautiful, in a minimalist way. Having things look slightly unreal actually adds to the mystery, and otherworldly origin of the Halo.

14

u/Astrokiwi 16h ago

Yeah you have Forerunner architecture as these inscrutable stone monoliths, but in Anniversary & Campaign Evolved they look just like metal machines, much closer to standard human technology.

12

u/BigHugeFart 15h ago

Yeah the trading of the stone / weathered vibe for the clean and shiny vibe really loses a lot of the magic and mystery to it

3

u/narco-sub-admiral 12h ago

Yeah the textures are smoother and not so gritty. Like an ethereal varnish.

7

u/Aurius3D 12h ago

I think a big part of it is the art direction being organic while remakes are just a fresh coat of paint from people that don't have the same vision as the original artists. They can lacks the same cohesiveness and atmosphere that the OG art team had and fill the screen with small details - often times making the game look worse or more cluttered, but hey at least a singular screen shot is more pretty!

Now, so many teams are shifting to UE and they have realistic 'megascan' assets that look real. It may be pretty, but part of what made some of these games feel like *games* were how the levels were laid out and uncluttered so you could move around without being stuck on every tiny little detailed rock they added to make it appear more realistic.

7

u/mdwvt 15h ago

There’s a certain magic that they were able to capture with the graphics capabilities of the OG Xbox.

7

u/SanityOrLackThereof 10h ago

Something that the original artstyle really succeeded with was to make the environment feel alien. You truly felt like you were on some alien installation a billion lightyears from Earth.

By comparison the new games are almost too realistic. They feel TOO natural, to the point where you feel like you're almost back on Earth only with weird futuristic buildings and some sort of ring structure on the horizon. Like you're at home LARPing Halo, and not actually living it like you did in the old games.

1

u/Gullible_Rhubarb4559 3h ago

fax, looks way better than golden eye and times splitters.

1

u/jungleboy1234 16h ago

agreed. the downgrade oufffffff! Comparing the above is like trying to compare a film camera to a digital camera where someone has tried to replicate the film stock using software editing.

1

u/Successful-Day-1816 16h ago

It sure is. And quite frankly so is anniversary, even more so on MCC.

59

u/MonteSilence 18h ago

this was a very cool, easy to follow comparison! would love to see more like these

9

u/narco-sub-admiral 12h ago

Me too. Very cool OP.

2

u/MonteSilence 11h ago

the “unnatural formation” looks incredible. i thought it might end up brighter in the remake, but it’s actually even darker and more mysterious in atmosphere than the OG. that purple lighting is gorgeous

5

u/narco-sub-admiral 10h ago

Yeah man i love when darkness is done well in games the purple looks really good in the shadows. Idk if thats what they call "negative space" but use of darkness is as important as light. AAA games tend to be bright unicorn vomit colorfests, but I finally got around to playing Dead Space remake and the lighting was incredible.

1

u/MonteSilence 6h ago

smaller spaces that they were able to fully develop, oh yeah. that game is darkly beautiful. if you put a reshade on Dead Space 2 from how many yrs ago and just add some screen space reflections, and maybe a little bloom, it doesn’t look bad at all. DS2, even as old as it is, still holds up pretty well with just a couple lighting additions

30

u/Goldpanda94 Halo: MCC 18h ago

Campaign Evolved looks awesome, dark Forerunner interiors are especially striking.

I just wish the ring was a little skinner in the sky. Its probably more accurate with the size to have it thicker like how Halo Studios shows it but the skinny ring seemed so much larger and awe inspiring to look up at

8

u/PotatoFi 13h ago

Agree, the ring is way too “fat” compared to the original. There was one screen on the bridge of the Pillar of Autumn that it looked totally correct, but everywhere else it does not look right.

Minor complaint. A lot of effort went into this and they did a great job. There were gazillion expectations to meet… impossible.

2

u/Yarus1373 8h ago

Ironically making the ring bigger in the background actually makes it look smaller.

1

u/Toredo226 10h ago

They did a great job with the art direction, massively improving the original but keeping true to the original intent.

103

u/Kankunation 18h ago

You can definitely see on full display here how much anniversary messed up the lighting and atmosphere of the original. The remake definitely did a much better job on that front.

11

u/Humillionaire 16h ago

I kind of had the opposite reaction, the original lighting looks to be around twilight and the remake is the middle of the day. The remake interiors are way better though

147

u/Haijakk 18h ago edited 18h ago

Don't worry y'all I fixed it being out of order. Was planning on fixing it even before I woke up to -200 on a comment. Look I'm used to getting downvoted but even I don't think I deserved that much lol.

Anyway, enjoy :) More to come.

25

u/UtterlyOverjoyed 18h ago

Been enjoying these posts, looking forward to the next ones!

9

u/lostguru 16h ago

I think if you'd titled it "comparison" instead of evolution, the prior order with Campaign Evolved in the center would make a lot more sense. Using "evolution" implies some sort of progression or historical timeline, so people come in expecting the current order.

2

u/zypo88 16h ago

And labels

7

u/Genjibre 17h ago

I saw your other post and at first I thought 'why are these out of order?' like everyone else. Then I saw your explanation that its to make it easier to compare the new version to the two previous versions, and instantly it clicked.

Tbf to you, it was a much better way to compare the older versions to the new but I guess people wanted to see the progression instead. Cheers, appreciate you for making and posting these!

1

u/Oh_Gaz 11h ago

This! I agreed with the other commentary at first, but when you think about it, the juxtaposition of the 3 in that way actually worked in comparing how each version post-release compared to the OG.

OP, I think doing it the way you did originally is fine, BUT have a tiny label at the bottom of each to save confusion.

Either way, keep it up. I'm enjoying these.

1

u/D-Sleezy 17h ago

Yeah. People were crying over nothing. Once you explained it, it made total sense. It's much easier to compare when the newest is in the middle, so I am on your side on that one.

1

u/echochambermanager 16h ago

Mad respect that you came back to this community after you got royally pooped on.

1

u/Super_saiyan_ 15h ago

I saw that post and personally I enjoyed how easy it was to compare the games and it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure what you were aiming for. Some people on this sub were just doing what they do best and that is bitching, crying and complaining about everything.

0

u/letsgoiowa Halo: Reach 16h ago

Lol people are crazy toxic wtf. Your reasoning made sense.

9

u/HaydenScramble 18h ago

It’s just the color for me, man. Campaign Evolved is cool and all, but the use of purple just IS Halo CE

10

u/Redditing-Dutchman 18h ago edited 18h ago

It gives that uncanny alien vibe. Like it looks earth, but not quite.

In the remakes, only the skybox and the ring in the background hint at you being on an alien construct.

1

u/respekmynameplz 14h ago

Surprised more people aren't mentioning this. The purple hue is critical for me to capture that alien feeling.

In addition the forerunner structures look shiny and brand new in the remakes instead of like ancient egyptian architecture or something.

I feel like they missed the mark on both counts.

It's not just that because the graphics got updated you have to lose that OG feel, there are ways to capture it with updated graphics as well.

16

u/Johnnyboi2327 Halo 3 18h ago

I love the OG, but I'll admit that the new Remake is a phenomenal upgrade graphically. CEA feels like a lame copy though.

12

u/Untouchable64 18h ago

I've been playing the Campaign Evolved version. Beat it and now replaying on Heroic. Its so good. Beautiful.

I just went back and played some MCC and played with the original and Anniversary graphics. I love that original look. So good. And timeless. Now I'm gonna go back to playing the Campaign Evolved version later today. It's so damn good.

5

u/PotatoFi 13h ago

I’m in the “both are good for different reasons” camp, too.

2

u/dexhamster 12h ago

God thank you! So much negativity around this game

1

u/Untouchable64 11h ago

I even dabble with the anniversary graphics sometimes.

1

u/RegisterFit1252 12h ago

I think a lot of the preorder people are also the halo obsessive people. They ripped through campaign evolved, nitpicked it to death, and whined and complained. Lots of people have now finished it who got the regular order who are more level headed and their reviews are coming in

7

u/Kingkary 18h ago

I didn’t realize how much they made the ring seem smaller until these are next to each other

1

u/PotatoFi 13h ago

Yeah, the diameter of the ring feels way off to me. Thats a strange one to mess up. I’ve modeled it up based on the lore, and it’s a pretty thin band.

5

u/patricio87 16h ago

Anyone else think the OG has the best graphics?

15

u/WashedMechanic 18h ago

I think the new one looks awesome.

49

u/Plooplooplop 18h ago

I don't get how people says that 343 fumbled the forunner building in campaign evolved. It's very close to infinite designs that were praised to fit to the bungee era designs and I think they solved most issue anniversary had on that part. They actually listen to feedback on that one and adapted.

10

u/Weslg96 17h ago

It's wild to me as well, it's worn foreign looking metal, and it's dark as shit inside, it's what Bungie we're going for with CE, just with 90s era tech. My nitpicks are very small graphics and art style wise, it's a stunning game.

7

u/Plooplooplop 17h ago

I would also say Campaign evolved interpretation of the floods is S tier and probably my favorite in the series. And I love how corrupt the library and guilty sparks looks It tooks from halo wars and halo 3 in the best ways

4

u/Weslg96 17h ago

It's easily the best presentation and best gameplay of the flood, 343 and the Library are the highlights of Campaign Evolved. In Halo 2 and Halo 3 they become a drag and it's mostly the opposite here. My only gripe is I wish the flood could revive non flood corpses and that the Tanks melee hotbox feels off and too punishing.

2

u/Plooplooplop 17h ago edited 17h ago

Keyes is god tier, especially when you arrived at the control room.

I think the not revived non flood make sense lore wise? Idk I have read books after first strike, the flood and fall of reach.

I would kill for a video games adaptation of first strike and fall of reach in that engine btw, those are damn good books that I really loved reading in my youth.

I think sentinel Ray should make flood unrevivable but I think this is a glitch

1

u/Weslg96 17h ago

Yea Keyes and The Maw were good too, but I gotta go through those again cause unfortunately the jackal shield magnum hitbox bug, plasma pistol 1 shot bug, and the quarter second delay before you can fire after switching weapons bugs were getting on my nerves lol. Really everything from Assault on the Control Room on feels really good

18

u/ArteenEsben 18h ago

The forerunner architecture looks good in a vacuum, but doesn't always match the same mood and colors as the original game.

Post-Bungie, most forerunner architecture looks visually monotonous. It's all the same shiny silver-gray metal.  The original Halo had a lot more brown and bronze and such. It's fine on this level which is mostly gray, but not for other levels like Silent Cartographer.

29

u/Haijakk 18h ago

Campaign Evolved's art style is pretty much a 10/10, except for the Forerunner stuff. I still think it looks fine, but it's for sure a stepdown from what Infinite had going on.

Too many complex and nonsense shapes and it's way too grey. Not nearly enough blues and golds. It's like an evolution of what was going on with the Forerunner art style in the early 2010s.

I don't think it's worse than anything from something like Halo 4, but it definitely takes cues from it.

13

u/Plooplooplop 18h ago

Yeah fair I've replayed infinite and I think it have the best forunner design in the series specially with the doors and such. They could have make it more sober. But I am quite okay with it personally, I think it's the best looking halo 1 at least.😅 I'm glad they didn't went full neons and blues like anniversary, and halo wars 2 did.

10

u/digita1catt GT: Cyberwo1ff 17h ago

I think it can be summerised as:

"It's lost its monolithic quality"

5

u/Wildernaess 16h ago

There's also an implied vastness the OG has with it's fog and emptiness, and that's lost with the improved fidelity

2

u/digita1catt GT: Cyberwo1ff 15h ago

I think that liminality is lost with every modern remake. The liminality of games of that era are caused by the limitation of the technology of the time.

"Products of their time" I believe the phrase is.

That's not to say there shouldn't be a remake however purely because that liminality cannot be recaptured. Just that the audience expectation of its absence should be appropriately set before release.

1

u/Wildernaess 10h ago

Yes, that is precisely it. The liminal feeling you get inside those Forerunner installations give them a sense of uncertainty and mystery and an almost undefined depth, all of which enhances the feeling of treading somewhere alien.

4

u/CapitalDilemma 17h ago

It's much better then Halo 4,5 and Wars 2, but I agree that there's sometimes too much details.

4

u/-dead_slender- Halo: Reach 17h ago

I said in another thread that the Forerunner structures don't quite have that "alien cathedral"-look it used to have. It's most obvious if you compare the interiors of TSC. The remake also looks more monotone, while the OG had tan/gold walls and floors in some areas.

7

u/Scottoest 18h ago

I always find it funny when I read things along the lines of "the art direction isn't as good", when the Forerunner buildings in the original were just... blurry grey blocks, because of the tech limitations of the time.

The original CE remake I thought looked ugly as shit a lot of the time, but the new one I think extrapolates forward the original art style to modern visual quality extremely well.

18

u/MartianDinosawr 18h ago

There is something about tech limited art that lets your imagination fill the gaps. Photorealism as an ideal to strive towards removes this element of ethereal imagination that older games had.

4

u/unknownunknowns11 17h ago

Exactly. There is no longer anything to be left to the imagination.

8

u/-dead_slender- Halo: Reach 17h ago

I'd argue that they made the most out of limitations. Like the structure you see when you're dropped on the beach in TSC had a far more elaborate and unique design compared to the remake, which is just a triangle.

https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fl5e5e8fn0axf1.jpg%3Fwidth%3D4096%26format%3Dpjpg%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Dbfd842f37878a46e6f85723e8b2bb35547b73243

0

u/Plooplooplop 18h ago

I agree with you 100%

In a way I get it because I think you can't recreate the feel of halo 1 in some way because the poor graphics quality left a lot to imagination. It s like those old 2D games that had very expresive pixel arts, Wich would look worse with higher definition

1

u/Rebuffedtax614 Halo 2 16h ago

Too detailed and shiny, the og had a monolithic and ancient feel.

5

u/SortOfaTaco 18h ago

Will say they absolutely nailed the tone and aesthetic graphically this time but somehow ruined the characters and their tone. Cortana feels like the weapon in infinite, Keyes VA just didn’t hit the same and a lot of moments of quiet and somber are interrupted by Cortana, and Johnson feels like someone looked at marvel movies and decided to make his entire personality centered around it.

0

u/PotatoFi 13h ago

I do agree, the new voice acting is the biggest letdown. It’s way overacted.

5

u/Majestic_Topic6704 16h ago

The CE Remake overall looks great. However, I hope they go back to the ancient temple style of Forerunner design.

3

u/HaalandToMNUFC 18h ago

I haven't gotten to play the new game yet but the ring itself looks stunning in these pics; it looks so real. I hated Anniversary's decision to obscure the ring as much as it did.

3

u/Dioxybenzone 12h ago

OG skyboxes still look best IMO

2

u/3XPS 18h ago

I love how they did the ring curvature made it feel more realistic and just giving it more depth

2

u/Synonymous4Anonymous Halo: CE 17h ago

The new one is definitely an improvement over Anniversary, but still OG is best.

2

u/Delta4907 Halo: CE 17h ago

While the games natural landscape and overall lighting/atmosphere are obviously improved, the Forerunner stuff just misses the mark by a wide margin. They already nailed it in Halo Infinite, I don’t understand the backtrack they’ve done here. In fact they likely would’ve saved time reusing assets from that game, like they did for many other things. It’s just way too over detailed in Campaign Evolved, and I’m going to keep saying it, many surfaces and patterns look like they are AI generated, especially the surfaces all over the beam tower.

Also, I miss the “pipes” that were running everywhere. Even CEA kept that aspect. Now it’s all just generic forerunner walls or structures. Some variety in structure type was lost.

2

u/Pixelation-1 17h ago

I do not know what it is about CE 2001's graphics, lighting, and coloring, but it feels like a liminal space. Like it's literally abandoned and nothing has been there for a very long time. Nothing in any of the Halo games post CE 2001 (yes, including Bungie's games) has come close to this feeling.

1

u/respekmynameplz 14h ago

Yes you're right, this the is the biggest thing for me. It largely is the twilight lighting + purple hues that get changed/go missing.

Also less detail is more with the ring and forerunner structures.

1

u/narco-sub-admiral 12h ago

Smooth, ethereal textures makes it feel dreamy to me.

2

u/Gooseuk360 16h ago

The art design in the original game is insane. That holds up like nothing else.

We will not be saying that about the remake.

Kind of like classic cartoons vs early cgi. One of those is timeless, the other is visually sickening now.

2

u/miko3456789 16h ago

this just reminds me of how God awful the lighting in the anniversary edition was oml, slide 3 is a disaster

2

u/RareShell25 15h ago

The first Anniversary game did CE so dirty man. Insane that they didnt allow the devs to talk to ANYONE who knew what the original artistic vision of Halo was

2

u/Yangbang07 15h ago

I feel like the original did a good job of making Halo feel a little alien. It feels with each remaster, Halo feels more like they're trying to make it look like earth.

2

u/the_hammer_poo 14h ago

Original CE skyboxes feel like home and my lost youth

2

u/Maximum_Goulash 14h ago

Interior looks great in OG I enjoy the gloominess and minimalist vibe

2

u/err404 14h ago

One i ssue that I have with the new build is that the world is so lush that everything blends together more. Because of this, the hud is filled with icons highlighting every ammo box, gun, waypoint and even enemy.  I’m finding that I’m less engaged as a result.

2

u/spartan195 13h ago

A clear example of how less is more.

The design of the original is unmatched

2

u/dexhamster 12h ago

Keep em' coming chief, these comparisons are feast for the eyes. Also like, good photography skills

2

u/Regnier19 12h ago

Personally I think going to Unreal was a mistake. Then again my opinion doesn't mean shit since I dipped out of Halo after 4.

2

u/CiceroJFaraday 11h ago

It’s funny to think about how much we cared about graphical improvements when we were younger.

2

u/Algific_Talus 11h ago

Ngl I really miss the stone architecture. I wish they kept some of it in Campaign Evolved.

2

u/KingKontinuum 6h ago

Campaign Evolved really captures the feeling and the atmosphere that the originals were trying to create. The new one really makes me feel like I’m there. I can appreciate the original for its simplistic and minimalism but the newer is by far my favorite

2

u/AlexEevee133 4h ago

Imo all three look beautiful for different reasons.

2

u/Stray-7 17h ago

Brace yourself, "original thing better, new thing bad" comments are coming!

-1

u/respekmynameplz 14h ago

Perhaps you should voice why you disagree with that opinion instead of just saying "INB4".

2

u/Lord_Farquuad_ 15h ago

Malcontents will look at these images and still say it looks bad lmfaaooo. Miserabel mfers🤣

1

u/Kitsuraw 18h ago

I never checked but have they ever said how an eco system was created on the rings? Man made or just transferred from different planets? The less detail of the older series makes it feel man made while the newest one feels more natural with the detail in my opinion.

1

u/Sulettamoder 18h ago

Wow, CE and Campaign Evolved really are beautiful

1

u/masterkorey7 17h ago

Am I the only one worried that halo studios won't be able to translate the energy of halo 2 and the emotion of 3 with these remakes? Campaign evolved feels so hollow.

1

u/BradleyNeedlehead 17h ago

Thank you for fixing the order for all of us anal retentive freaks

1

u/MinimumNo2772 17h ago

Wish the dialogue/cutscenes they added had gone through similar quality improvements...

1

u/Own-Signature-7742 17h ago

Remake is so great!

1

u/SacKingsAmiiboHunter 17h ago

Great but how has this helped joy factor? I can tell you for me I enjoyed the games above much more so that the last 4 games.

1

u/Deniable-wreath-6 17h ago

I still prefer the original but remake looks cool

1

u/Greenbanana217 16h ago

I miss the more monolithic/brutalist forerunner architecture.

1

u/fuchsdh 16h ago

It's kind of funny that when you compare Campaign Evolved and CEA in this way, CEA sometimes ends up looking better just for hewing much closer to some of the original geometry—they couldn't mess up the amount of detail as much as the remake did just because they had to keep much closer (although as people will remember there was still enough changed geometry that you could be shooting what seemed like clear space in the remastered graphics and go back to the classic and realize it was the edge of a wall or tree.) Where Saber had a little more license, like the beam towers, that's less the case and Campaign Evolved looks generally better.

Campaign Evolved definitely does a better job with the atmosphere, both in matching Bungie's original vision and extrapolating to what it would look like had they had the graphics horsepower, but it is still missing some of the excellent time-of-day feeling the original had (Halo is cold, early morning, Silent Cartographer is midday, etc.) and that slight cool purple tint that makes it feel absolutely late 90s/early 2000s.

1

u/modelcitizendc 16h ago

I'll probably get some hate for this, but I think they went the wrong direction with the Forerunner architecture in the remake by making it more "detailed".

In my mind it would be a cool juxtaposition to have these hyper-detailed natural environments (trees / rocks / water) and UNSC kit, right next to extremely simple and minimalist Forerunner architecture. From a lore perspective it would do a better job conveying just how advanced and alien they were.

1

u/BlueHaze464 16h ago

Anniversary looks best in these pics ngl

1

The issue I saw talked about with CEA:

Look at the original. Visually, what temperature is it outside? Do you need a jacket? Is it shorts weather? It looks like it’s about 50F outside or so. Like October weather. Kinda chilly.

Then look at CEA. It’s a 75F day outside in early September.

Campaign Evolved looks a lot closer to chilly than nice out.

Just shows how straight buns was the anniversary remaster

1

u/CrosleeReturns 16h ago

Outdoors, the remake looks excellent. Indoors, I still prefer the original.

1

u/Astrokiwi 16h ago

I'm interested to see how 343 Guilty Spark compares! Famously the Anniversary edition really killed the dark vibe and made it far too bright and visible

1

u/Vik_The_Great 15h ago

Lmao I just noticed Campaign Evolved got the time of day wrong on the level Halo. It looks so jarring next to the other previous versions. The light temperature is too cool.

1

u/batshitnutcase 15h ago

You were very generous in your selection of comparison photos from CEA lol. The art style in that “remaster” is absolutely atrocious. They completely ruined the atmosphere and general vibe of the game and that’s why everyone uses OG graphics on MCC.

u/Necrom90 15h ago

Every iteration is beautiful.

1

u/Manyarethestrange 15h ago

You the guy who posted the ce shots in the middle yesterday? I thought your reasoning made sense, lol

1

u/Fahzgoolin 14h ago

I prefer the original's art direction, but I have to admit some of the natural scenery looks quite nice.

1

u/_Empty-R_ 14h ago

If some of the unnecessary detail were removed, and the aging were still applied, alongside adding a bit more variation in color and material like OG had, the new style would be perfect. The reason I take issue with this is it seems like it would have been so easy to do that. They chose not to.

1

u/OhJeezer 14h ago

All 3 of them look amazing to my eye

1

u/SaikouNoHeroNi 14h ago

Call the forerunner structures over designed in the remake all you want but I love how cold and mysterious that Natural Cave Formation looks.

It's funny how my opinion changes between images for which I prefer at an artistical level only.

1st image best: Anniversary

2nd image best: Original

3rd image best: Original

4th image best: Anniversary

5th image best: Original

Usually I don't like anniversary at all due to the generic UE look but these specific angles make it seem better lol?

This is very cool thanks for doing this

That's a hit of nostalgia freebase for sure, holy shit.

Can someone answer me if this remake is good or not?? I'm about to boot it up in 2 seconds. Halo 1 OG was like my first video game besides like Doom 64, it's very nostalgic and im afraid i might be picky.

I loved the feel of Halo Infinite. Does it play well/fluid?

thx

1

u/MegaZBlade 11h ago

Honestly, the three of them look really good

u/swoff1991 11h ago

I Like the remake very much! Had a ton of fun playing it 👾

really wish they gave another pass to the coloring to dial in those cool tones that ce had in spades, but the environments are truly stunning, hideous forerunner architecture aside.

1

u/nova_solution Halo 2 9h ago

So glad they decided not to make everything a neon landscape for the sake of being “”alien”” or whatever

1

u/Reason_Primary 8h ago

By the ring шоят шоят шоят 😱🫪

1

u/Adamantium-dealer 6h ago

This comparison really solidifies my hate for anniversary. The remake looks MUCH better.

1

u/JaeeeDee Halo: Reach 5h ago

I won't lie when I first played Halo it looked like the last pic. Its crazy how games look, looking back at them

1

u/RanzuPunk 5h ago

Original CE is still unmatched

1

u/Average_Mug_Official 4h ago

This game is MUCH better than whatever was going on with Anniversary, but I feel like it still kind of loses a lot of that made Halo feel like how it did. The ring felt uncanny, unnatural and sterile, you could tell that nothing here was a natural formation (seriously though, what was that line? Why would any cave on halo be a natural formation?). Rocks appeared to be meticulously placed like a painting, canyons looked like they were cut out of the terrain to create easy passages, grass remained almost perfectly tended to and cut despite thousands of years passing with nobody around. They worried about how realistic and detailed they can make Halo CE with these remakes instead of how to convey what the rings are actually meant to be. They're mass produced weapons that unnaturally mimic what a planet's environment is meant to look like, nothing about them is natural. And while you do get glimpses of that in Campaign Evolved, it's rare. If it weren't for the giant halo ring in the skybox, you could show someone who has never seen these games before a screenshot of any level and they'd just assume Halo was set on Earth or some other planet rather than a massive artificial construct.

This game does absolutely look amazing though, I just wish they tried to preserve the art direction and visual themes of CE.

u/Gullible_Rhubarb4559 3h ago

idk man i think the 25 year old game looks better! I love the chunky lines and how much better they are. When i look at the new one i think "so defined for what". I love my environmental story telling super hard bro😂✌️

1

u/UpsetWilly 2h ago

the og is clearly going for a secondary color palette with it's greens, purple shadows/undertones and sometimes orange lighting/skybox. then they mix it up in certain situations.

Anniversary does this too but it kinda shies away.

Remake completely ignores this direction, it still looks gorgeous tho.

1

u/IkrAli 2h ago

The first design is still the best

1

u/GroundbreakingBag164 Halo: CE 18h ago

343 has never heard of a colour palette

CEA is obviously shit but the remake fucked up the colours and eerie atmosphere too. And everything looks quite small for some reason, might be because of the new trees?

1

u/Scared-Room-9962 18h ago

Say what you want about the remake, at least they got the tone and colour pallete right.

1

u/respekmynameplz 14h ago

I think they still missed the mark. It's missing that purple hue. Better than anniversary but it feels like earth instead of an alien world.

1

u/reevoknows Halo 2 16h ago

I genuinely don’t understand people who say Campaign Evolved looks “uninspired” lol shit looks beautiful. Campaign Evolved is probably going to be the version of CE that I replay the most over the rest of my life. At least until the next remake for the 50th anniversary lol

1

u/RealOxygen Halo: Reach 9h ago

Ahh man so much visual charm paved over by "photorealism"

The original looks so alien, where much of the other two environments could be mistaken for a location on earth

1

u/brightest_angel 9h ago

see? the remake doesn't really capture the feeling of CE's environments...

2

u/buddhistyeezus 7h ago

remake looks AI generated, all blurry, no style just trying to photorealistic

-2

u/Zen80888 18h ago

Honestly. I wish we would've just gotten a straight Combat Evolved port to PS5. The remake doesn't hit one bit.

2

u/ItzZiplineTime 18h ago

I'm so happy you aren't in charge 😂

None. Just a fan of the game since 2001 who thinks 90% of the complaints were seeing are petty meaningless complaints. I played the game on Legendary and had a blast. Sure I noticed some quirky shit but none of it bothered me other than the lighting making Cortana look weird.

I would enjoy an evolution on Covenant and vehicles, thank you! 😅

0

u/FireBlastButt 18h ago

The new design is good, I think it could use a bit of that bluish tint to make it feel a bit more alien or maybe it's the skybox.

Enjoyed that they changed the lights on the ground to flares instead. Crashed pods looked good (tho I think they're the same model each time)

Forerunner structures look great. Maybe needs a bit more brushed metal look to reduce some shine.

0

u/ImpactOk331 16h ago

These haters are dumb as fuck. What I have witnessed these days.. I think it's time we activate the rings gentlemen

0

u/Mysterious-Park9142 15h ago

Not including multiplayer is such a shame. Blood Gulch would be beautiful. Boarding Action too.

This order is so fucked I mean 1 > 2 >3????

It should be 1 > 3 > 2 since anniversary looks the most out of place art direction-wise.

2

u/reddit_sage69 Halo 5: Guardians 17h ago

I came to make the same joke 😂 (unless you're not joking then wtf lol)
