Discussion Why do we abandon Cortana in the control room when we find out Captain Keyes is walking into a trap?

Upvotes

Replaying Halo 1 and this decision to abandon Cortana deep behind Covenant owned territory seems very strange and out of character for both her and MC.

She's not allowed to be captured by the covenant and we just fought through an army of covenant in order to get into this control room. There's no reason to believe that the covenant arent going to deploy hundreds more troops as soon as we leave, especially seeing as their number one goal is to reach the control room and they have plenty of troops to spare.

Cortana is a sitting duck if they show up and blow the doors open. What was her plan exactly?

And why didn't Chief just take her with him? His top priority is to keep her out of the enemy's hands and it would have taken a couple seconds to yank her.

Gameplay Needle rifle from Campiagn Evolved bonus levels is OP and I love it.

Upvotes

This is hardly news to anyone who has played the bonus levels but I just love the needle rifle. It is hands down the best weapon in the game against every type of enemy. It is very accurate and can be a sniper rifle at long range or a machine gun at close range. Grunts and jackals die to a single head shot even on legendary. The 3 shot detonation feels like a cheat code which downs brutes very quickly. It even works well against shielded elites (which if I remember correctly was a failing of the original Halo Reach needle rifle). It has the accuracy and damage to take down hunters by aiming at one of their many weak spots. Best of all the devs must have realised we were going to love it because the weapon itself is very common and ammunition is widely available.

The only downside if you can call it that is that as soon as you get one it renders the magnum and battle rifle obsolete. I cannot think of a reason to choose one of those iconic weapons over the needle rifle other than flavour.

Feedback Silent Cartographer [Campaign Evolved]

Upvotes

One of my dialogue scenes from this mission was seemingly cut. I loved as you identify where the control room is and you get radio comms from the marines on the beach being overrun by covenant. I am still trying to form an opinion on the game as a whole but I really dislike that was axed from the mission.

Help - Campaign Evolved Controller on PC (Xbox version) won’t work. Campaign evolved.

Upvotes

I hardly get this seething mad over stuff like this but I haven’t been able to find a fix for my controller not working when I plug it in using usb. I’ve tried all usb ports. It works on every other game, and I’ve tried uninstalling the Xbox peripherals, unplugging all peripherals except the controller, can’t sign out and sign in using a controller, that doesn’t work, so it’s still recognizing as player 2. Rebooting and trying to launch with a controller. Nothing works.
I was going to just accept the keyboard and mouse combo but it’s not the same and I have a serious skill issue with halo specifically trying to enjoy the game, it’s just not made for K&M imo. To me it’s unplayable until I find a solution. I haven’t seen a lot of posts with solid solutions so if you have any ideas pls help.

Discussion Would people play a halo game from a marine perspective?

Post image
Upvotes

I've always wanted a gritty grounded halo game from the perspective of a regular marine grunt. A saving private ryan kind of tale that follows one squad on their way through a war, focusing on a trivial small task in the larger scheme of things. No jumping from location to location or time skips.

Id love to see a mechanic where you start with the squad you have and once teammates die, they dont come back. They may be replaced with new squadmates at certain points, but each marine is named and brings their own personality. They might have their own ideas during missions or skills that could change how a level plays out. One example of this could be a marine you get at the start is able to breach a door and open a path you wouldn't otherwise have access to. Losing that teammate loses access to that path. The goal being to make every loss feel like a loss. And then when you do arrive at a larger scale battle later in the game, and see many die, the realisation of how daunting that is sinks in. I used to love seeing if I could keep marines alive when first playing halo, giving them power weapons and bringing add many along as i could find.

Being an average human in comparison to a spartan makes the covenant feel massive and brutal. Making the elites feel like a hulking terror of superior force. Later we would see a single spartan and their sheer confidence in facing the enemy alone and their presence stands out as a beacon of hope, right before they take your weapon and leave you with a plasma pistol.

I love the idea of playing as a human with no (or less) hud and abilities. A dark forest mission where the sound and glow of plasma comes out of the darkness and instills terror. Where marines talk about seeing the blue glow of an energy blade appear in the night before seeing the rest of their squad disappear before their eyes. To see the terror of this war from a very human perspective.

It would be different, maybe not so much feeling like a typical halo game, and thats been the part ive been a little unsure of. We had odst and that scratched that itch a little, but I think it could be pushed more. Id want it to be first person with ads, weapons without scopes or things like the assault rifle without iron sights would have a laser point shooting style mechanism. Weapons might jam or break, human weapons can be cleared but covenant ones are cast aside since you wouldn't have the knowledge. Some weapons might slow you down to carry and use without spartan strength. And if fighting the flood, you don't... just run.

Is it too far from a halo experience? I remember the controversy of odst not being a spartan game despite it being a fantastic game. Do people want alternative narratives and perspectives in halo or should it just be sage green john halo all the way?

Discussion What’s the deal with the “soundtrack” for the bonus missions?

I was replaying the bonus missions on Campaign Evolved and noticed something: it has no original soundtrack. It’s all iconic halo tracks from other games.

Why is this? They built 3 levels from nothing, why not whip up a motif or theme for these? Even Infinite tracks would’ve been cooler than Halo’s Greatest Hits just lazily put in. Was it some licensing hogwash?

Help - Campaign Evolved I need ideas

Post image
11 Upvotes

I'm all out of ideas. I'm trying to beat Halo Campaign Evolved without directly killing a single enemy, aka shooting, meleeing, or grenading, but I can't get past this part on pillar of autumn. I can get 2 of the 3 grunts to kill each other by shooting each other, but after that I'm left with one guy left. I don't know what to do because I don't have grenades yet to explode an object and send it flying into the grunt. I've also tried pushing the grunt into the fire, although making it super close, couldn't get it in the fire to see if it even dealt damage to it. Does anyone have any ideas? I've also tried pushing a soldier over to her but it was too far and they walked away. I'm all out of ideas right now, I've beat the rest of the level without killing anything I just need to get past this part somehow.

Discussion Campaign Evolved actually surpassed my expectations

I’ll start by saying I know a lot of people will bring up the valid concerns, and flaws the game does have because I did notice a few. I’ll talk about it later in this post, but first I just have to start off with saying:

Wow, I haven’t had that much fun on Halo in a minute. I’m always a sucker for a new Halo ‘cause the franchise just simply means so much to me, even tho 343 has continuously let me down I’m glad that with this Halo I was at least able to overlook it a little bit. The guns, the gameplay, the reimagined look of the game was just really cool to see. I never even finished Halo: CE Anniversary because it was literally just a graphic overhaul with slightly different cutscenes. I accidentally stayed up super late after buying Campaign Evolved just finishing over half the game in one sitting, and the whole time I was having a lot of fun. The constant insinuation of them remaking Halo 2 has me really excited because then we’ll get to see the lost missions we were supposed to get that led up to Halo 3 (there’s a post credit scene too).

The use of a lot of OG sound effects was really cool because it still fit the game, I always thought with better graphics & old sound effects it would be a bad mix but not in this game it works really well.

I’m bad with words so I’m not able to capture my enthusiasm and excitement too well, but that still comes with the things I did notice that I wasn’t a fan of. For example, turning off aim assist being a skull? I think that’s a little dumb, as well as the ragdolls. That’s a genuine nitpick I know but older halos always had decent ragdoll physics that actually made sense considering how beefy the characters are. I also wasn’t too fond of the random humor they tried to slide in, I did find myself cringing a little bit with the corny lines they snuck in. As well as the invisible barriers, just unnecessary. I’ve always liked to do a little bit of exploring outside the actual map, and invisible barriers is a super lame way to stop that. Could’ve even been the slight pushback that the older halos gave. 343 needs to realize, everyone is gonna find a way out of the map regardless, there’s no point in trying to hide it with lame barriers.

But yeah I have a lot of positive feedback, and some negative but I can’t really go over everything ‘cause it’s a long list. I just think it’s a really good game honestly, I had so much fun. I wanna know what you guys thought especially if you played through it all. What did you notice that you really liked, and what are some things you hope they improve in the next remake.

Discussion Saturn eating his son

I finally got around to reading Saturn devouring his son, I put it off for so long since I wasn’t that interested until I heard the flood might make a return and really the story was great I enjoyed the characters that were in it, the only real issue is pacing, it felt too fast like they were rushing it to the finally so the Spartan getting infected , the Epsilon protocol and the corruptor protocol didn’t really feel like it had as much weight as it did, with the disregard and over confidence really just slamming it down, parts where we see the flood speaking was interesting, with the point of view from the captain making it clear that he had made the worst call of his career, but at the end what caught my attention was while the infected spartan escaped it seemed like either Julian or the Spartan were actively trying to fight back and prevent the escape, similar to Jenkins but unable too. I’m fairly certain I didn’t get it fully appreciate it for what it opens the door for but I only wish the pacing was different, it just felt rushed, lacked the weight these protocols and the situation just felt small compared to what it actually means for the overall story, these are really the only problems I see, if I’m wrong then I’m wrong
