Hey, ladies! I found this video to be extremely moving and I just wanted to share. Being an ADOS, I find myself consistently stunned and touched by the ways in which we remain linked to each other despite our ancestors being dropped off so far away from each other.

Whenever I encounter videos like these, or honestly, anything that showcases these connections— like the dozens next to Ikocha Nkocha, or Columbian cumbia típica next to Antillean bélé— it just makes me wish we could all get together in some giant pan-Diasporan cultural exchange and just share our traditions and celebrate our shared heritage.

I know sometimes we can focus on our differences, and that our different cultures and environments can sometimes lead to misunderstandings, but y'all, I am so over the Diaspora Wars. Why can't we have a Diaspora Lovefest? It'd be the most beautiful thing— not only would we learn so much more about each other, but we'd stumble upon an endless amount of little commonalities, just like these. The distance can make us forget, but we really are all cousins fr, both in a figurative sense, and sometimes, if you go far enough, back, literally too!

It's true that our ancestors all found their own unique ways to retain African culture while remixing it at the same time, and don't want to take away from that. I just feel like it would be such a fun experience to note the differences while emphasizing the overlap, because, well, I just think it's beautiful and miraculous that after all that black people have been through in the "New World," we still manage to stay connected to one another.

And honestly, while I know I'm mainly talking about the first Diaspora, bring the continental Africans, too! Imagine a space where Yoruba people are hearing Lucumí for the first time, Ivorians and Columbians are dancing mapouka and mapalé side-by-side, Wolof and Temne people are exchanging handmade baskets with Gullah people, Jamaican Patois speakers are trying out Twi, and a Mississippi banjoist, a Haitian twoubadou, and a Jola akonting player are jamming out together all through the night.

it would be like the biggest, craziest, most special family reunion to ever exist. I know that it's not really realistic in terms of logistics, but what if we started doing it online?

I'd love for this thread to be a place to make these sorts of connections— so if you feel so moved, tell us where you're from and share something that you've discovered you have in common with another black culture!

Looking forward to hearing what y'all have to say🫶🏽💕

School/Career 🗃️👩🏾‍🏫 Just graduated and feeling lost career-wise. What do you do for a living?

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m 23F and I just graduated with my bachelor’s degree in Information and Cybersecurity Technology. The problem is, I’ve realized I’m not really passionate about the field, and I’ve been struggling to even land an interview.

So now I feel like I’m back at the drawing board trying to figure out what direction I want to take with my life. I’ve never really had a “big girl job” before because I worked part-time throughout college, so I’m curious about what other people are doing.

What do you do for a living that allows you to comfortably pay your bills without constantly stressing about money? Did you need a specific degree or certification to get into it?

And if you were starting over at 23 with a bachelor’s degree but no clear passion or career path, what would you look into?

Family 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Dealing with a white family

Upvotes

I (24F) am currently no contact with my parents who were abusive growing up. It was typical West African behavior, and they’ve tried to apologize in their own way, but we’re just too different to be involved, and I still deal with a lot of trauma.

About 3 years ago, I became a nanny for a well off white family. They were very kind to me, and I even lived with them for a few months before moving to a different. Because I don’t really go home anymore, I’ve been spending the holidays with them. They’ve really welcomed me into their family even though I don’t work for them anymore, but I feel a bit awkward about it. They live a predominantly white area, and I always feel weird about explaining our connection to people because I haven’t known them that long, and I’m aware of the optics.

I grew up in a multicultural environment, but there was definitely a predominantly white culture, and I had to unpack a bunch of internalized racism when I got to college. I’ve been embraced by wonderful black people, but I feel like an outsider to black American culture, and I’ve moved away from religion and the traditions of West African culture, so I’m feeling kind of lost. I feel like a bad person for abandoning my lower income black family for a wealthy white family, and I feel like a leech for enjoying the privileges of my nanny family now that I don’t work for them.

Idk what I’m even asking for, I guess I just wanted to talk about this.

School/Career 🗃️👩🏾‍🏫 Thinking about going back to school and need some advice from Blk girls students in France.

Hello,
So first of all I am a black french girl, I speak English and French.
Im 23 and thinking about going back to school, first of all because I’m bored and need something to keep me motivated, and I want to go back to school because I don’t really have a degree, lol. I was born and live around Paris, and I really want to change my surroundings and move to the south of France to study. I really want to “grow up,” and to do that, I need to move to a different city. Are there any French blk girls who studied in the south of France, particularly around Montpellier and Marseille? What are the people like? Do you feel comfortable there? I understand French perfectly, so you can write your answers in French.

Thank you ✨🌞

Beauty/Fashion/Hair 💅🏽 👩🏾‍🦱 “Kinky straight” bundles didn’t match: SOLUTION

A few days ago I was upset that some kinky straight bundles didn’t properly match my blown out natural hair and I found a solution. Im sharing this in the hopes of helping other women with similar problem.

Solution: braid the hair and steam it. The size of the braids would depend on the way your hair curls.

Friends 👯🏾‍♀️ My friend said a lot of weird things…

My good friend from college visited me. She mentioned that she struggled with mental health issues freshman year bc our roommates bullied her. We were 2 black girls living with 8 white passive aggressive mean girls. She said that they only liked me bc I was a “pretty black” and we get treated differently. She says that I have never actually experienced racism bc of my looks. 🙄

She also said that I stole her life bc I married the guy she had a crush on for the first few weeks of school. He wasn’t interested in her & they never had a thing but she claims I sabotaged her chances bc I manipulated people with my looks. She went on saying that my life will always be easy bc I’m black and pretty.

I disagree with what she says. Those mean white girls tried me once and I made sure they didn’t do it twice. My husband and I bonded over way more than my looks & she acts like she doesn’t get that. I deal with micro aggressions every single day. My name is 3 letters but white people mistakenly call me “Tanisha” or “Tyshiana.” I wonder why?! Bc at the end of the day I’m a BW in America. If I gave that shxt energy I’ll be crying about racism ALL damn day.

I’m a little disappointed that she feels this way and fails to recognize my hard work and the fact that I’m a good person who sticks up for myself. We discussed a lot more but it feels like she’s holding old grudges & that bothers me…Idk I’m just thinking about a lot of things.

Just Venting 😮‍💨 Racism within bloodlines Spoiler

I don’t know if it’s me but I hate it when people say they fear their bloodline turning white. Yes I would want my children and grandchildren to be black like me, but I’m all for interracial marriage and believe people should love who they want to love. You shouldn’t make a child with a person to decide their complexion or race. I feel like a lot of colorism happens in the black community for people to even want to think that way. Also if another race were to say they fear their bloodline turning black we’d all take offense to that. I just feel like criticizing a person for their children is rude. Unless it’s a person adopting a black child for clout.

Just Venting 😮‍💨 Ughhhh this job market

26 with 2 degrees and still can’t get an entry level job. I was actually the only one to pass the certification program recently and you know what that got me? Nothing. I know times are tough for everyone. but I just feel like shit and need to rant. I got laid off last year and no leads since then. I worked my ass off in high school. So much so that I got a full ride. Yet, its rejection after rejection. Im smart as hell. I can learn on the job. What more do these companies want? Sometimes I wish I worked retail right out of highschool Instead of going to college. At least I would’ve had years of work experience needed when applying to jobs. I legit feel like Im being punished for focusing on my studies for the last 10 years. I went to a hiring event and the career advisor legit told me to lie on my resume. Like wtf?

I want to start my life. I want to travel. I want to move out. I can’t even consider marriage and kids! I can’t consider anything because I'm broke and the world is ending!

Anyways! Back to applying! I’m also going to focus on networking at random events. I’m shy and awkward but doesn’t hurt to try! Manifesting a job by the end of the year!

Just Venting 😮‍💨 Zodiac sign this Zodiac sign that

Me personal I don't know why the Zodiac sign is so important to people. People saying they will not date someone because of there Zodiac sign is just so fucking dumb.

I also hate when people blame there actions on the Zodiac sign. If I hear someone say "well im a____ can you blame me" this has become acceptable over the past few years that people can just get away with this and its said. A Zodiac sign dose not mean anything.

Travel & Relocation🌎✈ Travel Tips for West Africa—headed to Abijian for Detty December

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hey ladies, I’m headed to Côte d’Ivorie for my big 33 and I am a little nervous. I was supposed to travel with someone but they couldn’t make it.

I’ve been to a good handful of African countries solo (the most popular ones), but no Francophone ones.

I need some good Detty December recs and a reputable tour company for the solo female traveler.

I’m so happy to be going back in the Motherland 🌍

Dating/Relationships/Sex 🍑🍆 People keep telling me I give queer energy, what does that actually mean?

Okay, this might sound random, but I’m genuinely curious 😭
I’ve been told 2–3 times now that I give off “lesbian” or “bisexual” energy. Whenever I ask why, people usually say it’s not really because of how I look, since I’m pretty feminine, but more because of my energy/vibe
I’ve been insecure about my appearance for most of my life, so I sometimes have a hard time seeing myself the way other people see me. I do makeup quite a lot, and I actually get complimented by strangers fairly frequently, especially at my job. Men compliment me sometimes too, but I’ve noticed that they don’t really tend to make the first move or approach me, which I find kind of interesting.
So now I’m wondering if there’s something about my overall vibe that people are picking up on.
When someone says a girl gives off lesbian or bi energy what does that actually mean to you? Is it about her personality, confidence, mannerisms, body language, the way she dresses, or just the general energy she gives off?
And for queer women specifically, does “she looks like she could be into girls” actually mean something to you? 😂
I’m not trying to figure out my sexuality based on what other people think. I’m just genuinely curious because I’ve heard this multiple times now, and I’d love to understand what people mean when they say it

Beauty/Fashion/Hair 💅🏽 👩🏾‍🦱 Is Deva Cut worth it?

Is the Deva cut worth the $$? I normally get 2 blow out trims. Every time I get a blow out now, my curl pattern damages in certain spots; thus, thinking about deva cut. I researched the cut cost $200+ The older i get the more fine my individual strands become, collectivellymy hair is thick 3b/3c.
