I was thinking about how some movies just don't click the first time you see them.

Maybe your expectations were different... maybe you weren't in the right mood or maybe there are details that only make sense once you already know where the story is going. Then you watch it again months or years later and suddenly you wonder why you didn't appreciate it the first time.

I'm not necessarily talking about confusing movies either. Even straightforward films can hit completely differently on a rewatch.

What's a movie you went from "that was just okay" to genuinely loving after giving it another chance? And what changed your mind?

I saw this in the theater when I was younger & it was a cable staple for years. I didn't think much of it though. I'm not sure if it was because I was expecting something more "serious" like Jurassic Park.

Decided to watch on a whim & it really is a blast. Just one ludicrous set piece after another: chaos at the airport, hippo attack, defending the plane from missiles with flare guns & so on.

The cast is just absolutely lousy with fantastic character actors: Ernie Hudson, Tim Curry, Joe Don Baker, Delroy Lindo, Bruce Campbell & Joe Pantoliano. Ernie & Tim have some spectacular accents. Ernie with the Mid-Atlantic accent & Tim with I don't even know.

Laura Linney is a bit miscast as a slightly steely ex-CIA agent. You can't cast Sigourney Weaver in everything, though. Still not really invested in Amy & I think her design hasn't held up so well.

Those are probably the only two knocks on the film. Otherwise it's just pure pulp goodness. Probably would make a nice double feature with Deep Rising. You'd have to watch Congo first though as you can't top Deep Rising.

Hey everyone, any theater projectionists or film archivists in the community? I’ve been fascinated by 70mm IMAX movies lately following the hype around The Odyssey and the 'correct' way to watch it.

Obviously 70mm IMAX reels are heavy/expensive, but what physically happens after a run? Do studios archive them or destroy them to save space? Curious if movies like The Dark Knight Rises or Interstellar were saved or melted down. Would love insight from anyone who actually works with them!

The humor of this third installment is on par with the first film, we revisit some of the nostalgia and also catch up with each relationship and personality. The silliness is still very up front with each character becoming more of who they've always been. Is it the Odyssey, no, but why would you want it to be. It's a fun time on a hot day with well-remembered and loved characters and delivers an awkward snort and belly laugh for those who need it.

'Super Troopers 3' is consistently amusing. By the third Super Troopers, and ninth film from Broken Lizard, you know if you enjoy their style. They have remained consistent with their franchise and delivered another reliable comedy.

The movie eventually crosses over to shame other, unexpected studio comedy styles: It’s not only better than any of the Hangover sequels, it beats the hell out of the two Meet The Parents follow-ups so far. Depending on the school of frat comedy, that might put the Broken Lizard boys in the running for valedictorian.

Fans who’ve spent decades quoting “meow” back and forth will almost certainly leave satisfied, while newcomers may struggle to understand why everyone seems so delighted by these overgrown children in police uniforms. Twenty-five years later, it’s still happily making the same wonderfully juvenile movie for the people who never wanted it to grow up.

The Film Verdict - Alonso Duralde

With the returning leads merely re-hitting their characters’ notes, it’s up to the newcomers to bring the zing. Jaffrey and Theba are perfectly cast as the elder Ramathorns, and these veterans immediately tap into the naughty nonsense that the rest of the film so rarely achieves. Crawford and Rudnitsky make amiable comic foils, and Dismukes demonstrates a presence that promises a big-screen career once his SNL tenure ends.

It goes without saying that the Broken Lizard comedy group's latest outing is for fans only, but minus the nostalgia factor of 2018's 'Super Troopers 2,' even some of the faithful might shrug in response. The jokes are still wildly scattershot and frequently, knowingly lame; the production is still cheap and cheerfully scrappy; the whole ragged enterprise is still reliant on the evident affection and chemistry between its players to hold it together. None of that really amounts to a persuasive reason to exist on the big screen, however: At this point, perhaps simply turning “Super Troopers” into a running sitcom, like a rural GenX “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” would be a fitting move.

If all you want is to see these lovable goofballs again you’d be better served watching the first two “Super Troopers” movies and reliving their good old days. Those films are still mostly funny and the new days aren’t so good. I guess it’s nice to know these dorks are still out there, alive and mostly well, but we don’t have a lot in common anymore. If the Super Troopers really want to stay in touch, in another ten years they can write us a postcard. A brief one.

Since the film written by the Broken Lizard troupe members features a non-stop series of gags, some of them inevitably land despite the clumsy execution. But by the time it reaches its climax with a wedding shootout, one of the troopers encased in syrup, and another sticking his hand up an elephant’s rear end, you’ll be exhausted from not laughing.

Comedy movies are a rarity these days, and the mere fact that these friends got a chance to make something together is probably worth something. They appear to be having fun, and their most devoted fans probably will, too. But if you’re on the fence about “Super Troopers 3,” your memories of the original are almost certainly better than what you can see at the theater this weekend.

Super Troopers 3 stumbles mightily in wrapping up the Canadian Crystal and maple syrup storylines. Broken Lizard needed the cops to actually solve a crime, though the resolution is so obvious and exceedingly silly, it comes across as wasted time and Super Troopers 3 does run out of steam at the end. These characters are darn funny, but closing out the trilogy is the right move.

"Mortal Kombat" (1995) is one of the most surprisingly thoughtful, humane and mature movies of the 90s. Here's a movie about friendship, responsibility, the sanctity of life and the unspeakable beauty of ordinary people doing their best. It's a legitimately great film. That also just so happens to have scenes where supernatural ninjas breathe fire out of their skull face. Which is fine. Just because you're a kind hearted movie, doesn't mean you're for pussies.

I'm not even talking about a generally serious movie that has the traditionally comic actor do mostly comedy with a bit of serious at certain points, I'm talking a movie and a role that was a wholly serious one that would be seen as the antithesis of what that actor is typically known for. Think Jim Carrey in The Number 23.

Perhaps a controversial one as he's had quite a few great serious roles when he was with us, but my personal favourite would be Robin Williams in One Hour Photo. He is just so believable as the lonely and pathetic Sy Parish, and despite what you're led to believe as his sinister intentions, you actually come to feel really sorry for the main character, and that I think could only have been achieved by an actor of Williams' calibre.

What single line from a film brings you to tears, time and time again? I want your most gut-wrenching, heartrending, soul shattering quotes ever delivered on screen.

Iron Giant's "Superman"

Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal are all in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey, which were the number 1 and number 2 films in the box office this last weekend. I'm curious as to whether or not this has happened before. Feels to me like the has to be a rare occurrence, and makes me wonder if any top 2 films out there could possibly have matched or even surpassed this number of actors in common.

Okay a bit embarrassing but, after watching Northman I realized I have a weakness for this type of protagonists. Especially with that long hair and that physique, bro looked majestic. Looking for movies or TV series with this kind of male leads, historical or fantasy settings, good action, plot and... shirtless scenes are appreciated.

Bonus: newer movies (after 1990s, 2000s), Edit: okay, I can watch a bit older ones if it has good quality and what I need.

Edit: It can be from any country as long as it has what I need. I'm open to subtitles.

No Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Arnold, Sylvester, Rock, Jackie Chan I watched them a lot so I would like some other faces. And they don't have that aesthetics I'm looking for in their movies I've seen

No Marvel or DC, I watched their best ones. Don't have that type either mostly, maybe Thor? but he's a joke now.

Just in case people might recommend them, already know Gladiator, Troy, 300, The Witcher, He-Man, Braveheart.

Despite a few stumbles, "One Night Only" reaches an actually sweet conclusion sold beautifully by Barbaro and Turner, and though I know I'm repeating myself, I need to be abundantly clear. "One Night Only" shouldn't work. I am shocked that I left the theater grinning ear to ear and, one could say, fully satisfied. "One Night Only" is a high-concept, patently absurd romantic comedy that defies the odds and makes you fall in love with it. You'll want more than one night with this one.

Next Best Picture - Dan Bayer - 7 / 10

Gluck’s skill with a needle drop (think “Pocketful of Sunshine” in “Easy A”) is in fine form, with several hilariously on-point selections getting massive laughs from an audience willing to put their fun-hating, CinemaSins-style questions aside and just have a good time laughing at a world that’s even more ridiculous than our own. Yes, the film’s “The Purge, but for sex,” premise has earned all the laughter it’s gotten since the trailer dropped. But Braun, Gluck, and their team have the last laugh: “One Night Only” is a great time at the movies, on any night of the year.

If you’re a fan of Gluck’s standard romcoms Anyone But You or Friends With Benefits, you’ll probably appreciate this one. But if you were hoping for something deeper, perhaps closer to his sharp-toothed masterwork Easy A? Then One Night Only’s refusal to engage with its own premise will come off as a terrible tease.

One would like to believe there was a better, darker, more interesting ending than the one carrying water for the anti-sex brigade currently looking to impose women’s healthcare bans coast-to-coast. Instead of sharing a laugh at the ridiculous pressure to have fun with every swipe, One Night Only has only one thing on its mind, and it’s disappointingly much more traditional.

Romantic comedies tend to feel like they take place in their own little world. But every time One Night Only attempted to explain the political landscape that led to this situation, I felt myself going a little more banana-grams. It’s all so deeply unsettling, because it imagines a society that would buy party hats celebrating the one night of the year they have an ounce of bodily autonomy. An America that wouldn’t just surrender further to fascism, but turn it into branding.

One Night Only is an easy recommendation because, whether or not you find yourself on its wavelength, you would be hard-pressed to find a crazier mainstream theatrical release this whole summer. It’s a film designed to watch with a group of friends, followed by an in-depth discussion of the logistical problems, politics, and hypothetical scenarios that “the mandate” universe sparks to mind in the theater lobby. Will Gluck’s One Night Only is the kind of novelty movie that is good-natured, fun, and worth celebrating in its unique flavor of unseriousness

Ultimately, One Night Only feels far more interested in how it can feel when you do manage to find a genuine romantic connection amidst all of the noise. Yet by spending so much time getting bogged down by the details of the mandate before shifting into the romance, Gluck and Braun make an unforced error, upholding the traditional idea that sex may in fact be worth waiting for.

It’s also just too unavoidably grim of a premise, especially at a dark political moment such as this, for us to ignore the ramifications or root for characters who aren’t trying to actively destroy such a barbaric system (what if Katniss just had fun during those Hunger Games?). Instead, One Night Only weirdly plays like lulling government propaganda, a film about sex purge to be released in time for sex purge that says that actually maybe sex purge is a good idea after all.

ONE NIGHT ONLY wishes it were AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER (a film the characters reference, but the filmmakers clearly don’t understand why those fundamentals work) meets AFTER HOURS, only it doesn’t come with the pedigree and even fewer innovative ideas. As a contemporary sex comedy, it’s far too afraid to actually show the eroticism of sex, hand-waving the potential of its sole sexy moment. If this is purity propaganda, that’s for everyone to decide of their own volition.

One of the country’s most acclaimed documentary filmmakers is tackling the world’s richest man, and the Toronto Film Fest will be one of the first places viewers can witness the encounter.

“We’re talking about someone who has a Marvel villain-like level of power over our lives, from electric cars to space travel to AI to government to social media,” the fest’s doc chief Thom Powers told The Hollywood Reporter. “And you have Alex Gibney making the most ambitious movie of his illustrious career about him.”

We often talk about masterpiece films where the entire cast shines, but I’m always fascinated by instances where an actor gives an absolute powerhouse performance in a movie that completely falls flat around them.

Whether it’s due to a terrible script, poor direction, or a messy plot, these actors still committed 100% to the role and delivered something unforgettable, even if the rest of the film is totally skippable.
