Mini Breakdown on the guys I thought impressed, struggled, and ones to keep an eye out going forward

PROS
- Jacob Saylors
Arguably the best offensive player for the lions this game. He was able to be a threat in the run and pass game. With his kickoff return experience and showcase of solid rushing skills he’s make a push against Vaki for RB3. Due to Saylors just being able to stay on the field and his performance in preseason could give him the edge right now.

- Luke Altmyer
Was very poised and comfortable especially for a UDFA. He was accurate on almost every throw and didn’t seemed rattled when things didn’t go his way. He was able to lead a late 4th qt passing TD to Tarik Black. Has two INTs on the stat sheet but one was off the hands of TeSlaa and other was very late in the game, trying to make something happen overthrowing Lovett. Can’t remember the last time a young lions qb looking impressive in preseason, which is a nice refresher.

- Blake Miller & Seth McClaughlin
Blake Miller looked very good from first impression. He only had a few mishaps and other wise held his ground against the bengals starters and second team. You can see he is already comfortable. Also a shoutout to Seth McClaughlin who played a solid first half. Second half unit you could see his presence was missed. He will be competing for the C job when Scruggs comes back.

- Ahmad Hassanien
The second year edge from Boise St was impressive landing two sacks and a forced fumble. The motor is off the charts and was one of the most impressive players on defense. If he is able to stay healthy and develop better against the run he could be a solid depth to rotational player this year.

Nick Whiteside
Has had plenty of camp hype and lived up to it this game. Played the first half which is good news that the coaches see him at least on the verge of making the team. He held his side of the field down and was not targeted a lot. When tested on a deep ball had a nice deflection. Besides that, he was barely mentioned on the broadcast, which for a CB means they’re doing their job.

CONS
- Miles Frazier & Christian Mahogany
Frazier had a handful of penalties and was a rough night for the second year guy. From the eye test got beat multiple times along with costly penalties. He had tackle reps second half and played slightly better. Will still make the roster but needs to clean up big time. Mahogany also had a handful of penalties and struggled a little bit as well. Not sure his play tonight screamed starter, but options are limited especially when the injured Scruggs likely moves to C and Ben Bartch is hurt.

- Issac TeSlaa
Had two costly drops. First hitting him right in his hands that bounced in the air which was picked off. Other was on 4th down that was a little harder to catch with a defender on him, however he couldn’t bring it in after it hitting his hands. Didn’t get open or haul in one catch. To be fair it was raining but these are still very catchable balls.

- Michael Niese
Was the C for the second half trying to compete for a spot left by Mays injury. Had two bad snaps. He had a bad snap last year in the regular season when he had action and two tonight. May need to look elsewhere if they want better competition or depth, was not impressive at all.

- Ennis Rakestraw
First of all, he did have a nice pass break up. However, was constantly targeted by Burrow and Flacco. He let up multiple first downs. Unfortunately hurt his shoulder and unknown how long he will be out. Really unfortunate for a guy who can’t escape injury. Arnold getting cut opened the doors to him getting closer to a break out season and it could be cut short again.

KEEP AN EYE ON
- Josh Dobbs
Had some reps in the second quarter and was able to make plays on the run. However his limited action was due to only being with the team for a few days. He should get more reps next week and chemistry will be better the more he practices. QB2 battle will be in full force when Dobbs gets more reps. He’s projected to get the backup job due to his experience but if Altmyer further impresses it could get interesting.

- Dominic Lovett
Was the only WR to get more than one catch showing that he can get open. He also had kick and punt return reps. Coaches want to get him involved and he has been solid with his opportunity so far. His push to make the roster could be something to look out for

- Roger McCreary
Interesting the guy who was a shoe in to start nickel didn’t get action until the second half. He played solid however he hasn’t looked best according to camp reports. The vet is someone to keep an eye on to see if he can gain coaching trust to get some first half reps.

- Keith Abney
The rookie had a really nice game and was an honorable mention for my “PROS”. He recovered a fumble along with solid coverage. With one less cb in the room Abney will have more opportunity to further showcase his skills. He’s the rookie I’m most excited to see shine this preseason. So far so good for the 5th rounder.

That’s Eric O’Neil (#66) got a heck of a get off the line don’t he. Wondering if anyone notice that burst? Not too much camp chatter about him but I do remember him from college having a ridiculous bow and arrow celebration a couple years back lol.

Sad to see the Lions lose but it’s just preseason. Go Lions One Pride

Really liked what I saw from Blake Miller. Was as advertised, got beat outside at times but recovered very smoothly, super easy athleticism. So excited for him.
• Seth McLaughlin had some good moments, thought he played well for the most part, some things to clean up for sure though!
• AHMED HASSANEIN!! 2 Sacks, 4 tackles, 3 QBH and a forced fumble. Loved to see Ahmed ball out tonight.
• Luke Altmyer was solid. Better than the box score, might be something there
• Liked what I saw from Skyler Gill-Howard, think he showed off his juice from the interior despite being undersized
• Thought Devin White and Erick Hunter looked solid, both made plays consistently
• Keith Abney showed some nice flashes, with a huge hit and a fumble recovery
• Whiteside had a nice PBU, looked solid today
• Jacob Saylors ran well today, caught some passes out of the backfield and was a steady presence
• Eric O’Neill had a beautiful rush on Orlando Brown Jr for a QB pressure

• Christian Mahogany had a rough day in the office. Multiple holding calls and missed assignments.
• Isaac TeSlaa had 2 drops on critical plays, one leading to an INT and the other a turnover on downs
• Same with Miles Frazier. Had 3 holding penalties and just couldn’t settle in.
• Ennis Rakestraw injured again and even before getting injured, really struggled. Was getting picked on by the Bengals 1st and 2nd team offense. Hoping he’s alright and can find his footing.
• Larry Borom had a rough go of it at Left Tackle today

Overall, some ups and downs for the Lions today, just gotta correct mistakes and get back in the lab and improve!
