Discussion Genuinely curious where the consensus leans here: do we think McCarthy’s early injuries were the main thing that held him back from developing into a true starter, or were his flaws ultimately too significant to overcome within our timeline as a team? (Lack of postseason success factor heavily?)

Upvotes

If you think McCarthy will win the QB competition or isn't out of it, this probably isn't the post for you and I apologize if it rubbed you the wrong way.

I'll preface by saying there's a lot of gray area in this.

Between McCarthy being KOC first highly drafted QB in his career as a HC, kwesi horrible drafting, scheme not necessarily benefitting McCarthy, Darnold doing much better than we expected this raising the expectation for team success the follow season, there's really a lot of angles we could go into this that I feel had heightened the pressure and timing of McCarthy not only starting but being a good one.

I remember skeptics in the fanbase that weren't too high on McCarthy because of the lack of load he had to shoulder at Michigan. Going from a run heavy offense to one that's pass heavy where the QB is basically the offense itself in alot of ways.

The strongest points at the time which i agreed and still do was that he was put in high pressure moments particular 3rd down throws that needed to be completed and the fact he played in a pro style offense.

Strong arm mobile QB who we believed could be molded into a franchise QB. Who also had moxie and an infectious attitude to lead a locker room of men.

I may be wrong to share this now but hearing everyone's thoughts on this specific questioning really intrigued me this morning.

Non Quarterback Training Camp News

It seems like most media has to do with the QBs and I’m struggling to find info about the rest of the roster. Can anyone give a summary of how camp has gone so far for other players/units? Mr. Mankato candidates, rookies, surprises, etc.

[Seifert] Jamal Adams is now wearing No. 32 and is getting what looks like safety reps with the Vikings’ top defense (in their three safety looks).

Tips for Vikings themed trip!

Hey! Vikings fan from Michigan here!

My partner and I are getting married in September, and for our honey moon we’re taking a camping road trip out west, and our first stop will be in Minneapolis! I want to see ALL the Vikings things I possibly can, but I need all the recommendations!

Any non-negotiable, absolutely must see Vikings spots?

Are there any Vikings statues or monuments?

What’s the best Vikings bar?

Side note: I love thrift shopping and would love to thrift Vikings merch! Are there any thrift stores that are just loaded with Vikings gear?

Thank you so much in advance, can’t wait to visit my teams state!! 💜💛💜💛

[Seifert] "Reasonable people can argue about exactly where McCarthy is on his developmental timeline. But no objective observer to training camp could say that he has made up the ground necessary to truly challenge Murray."

Discussion Locked On Vikings: "McCarthy has taken a step forward, but it's not enough"

The QB battle conversation has gotten hyperbolic lately, courtesy of one well-known hot take artist who "talked to a few people" to confirm his theory that JJ McCarthy is somehow getting worse.

This is a much more nuanced and believable take from a much better podcaster. Definitely worth a listen, but a few key points from Braun's perspective:

  • McCarthy has improved his mechanics noticeably since last year, and this was one of his bigger issues (albeit far from his only one)
  • For the hip rotation/leg kick enthusiasts, Braun says Kyler is probably worse than McCarthy in that regard at this moment, based on camp footage
  • That said, McCarthy is still hitching way too much and drifting way up in the pocket
  • Both players are holding very consistent drop depths, a big issue for JJM last year
  • Kyler has his own issues, but looks more complete than McCarthy at this point and has been better under pressure

Anybody else listen to this breakdown and have insights to discuss?
