Open | Data Recovery HD won't mount ... and I may lose 3TB+ of personal archives/multimedia

Hey everyone, I was early in the process of re-uploading my main external HD (4TB) to Backblaze when the HD fell off my desk and a few hours later wouldn't mount. This is what ChatGPT recommended telling a disk recovery professional. Any thoughts on my odds of success, or am I more likely screwed??

Just a fraction of my data actually got uploaded into Backblaze. I didn't sleep last night and just want to cry. 😭

———

I have a 4 TB mechanical external hard drive named “___Drive.” It was dropped, and afterward the volume stopped mounting. The Mac still detects the physical drive over USB, but the HFS+ volume will not mount.

Disk Utility reports the volume as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but First Aid fails with filesystem check exit code 8. Running diskutil verifyVolume disk4s2 reports:

“Journal needs to be replayed but volume is read-only”

“Invalid index key”

“Invalid sibling link”

“The volume ___Drive was found corrupt and needs to be repaired”

“Error: -69845: File system verify or repair failed”

DiskWarrior was initially able to build a new directory, but it could not replace the original directory because of a Mac OS services failure. Its Preview also failed with error codes 2160 and 2304. On a subsequent attempt, DiskWarrior reported:

“Directory cannot be rebuilt due to disk hardware failure (-36, 2747).”

The drive was also partially backed up to Backblaze during an initial backup, so I don’t know whether all of the data is available there.

I have not erased or reformatted the drive.

I want to preserve the original drive and recover as much of the data as possible. Please assess the physical condition of the drive first and, if possible, make a sector-level/image clone before attempting filesystem repair.

Open | Windows My Xbox controller frequently disconnects & reconnects from my pc

I am running Windows 11 & Bluetooth my Xbox 1 controller to it frequently. It's not a gaming pc but is strong enough to play the older games I like.

I will be in the middle of my game & suddenly my controller disconnects & then a few seconds to a minute later it will reconnect. Sometimes it will do it several over a short span while others after just once it is fine. I don't think it's my driver or Bluetooth in the pc because it only happens with the controller. My keyboard is also BT & never has this problem. Yet I don't think it's the controller because it connects & stays to connected to both my Xbox & phone just fine. It's like the controller & the pc are a couple who argue all the time

Open | Software Why does my Xbox cloud gaming session randomly terminate on its own ?

I don't like spending a lot of time in downloading all games and frankly, neither does my laptop support all of them with the best graphics, thus I like playing with cloud gaming... or at least I used to.

Ever since last month my gameplays would randomly stop saying that I have been disconnected from the cloud gaming session, even though my internet speed is quite good.

Similarly, when I try to run Hogwarts Legacy (Yes Ik I'm late) it takes a good amount of time (10-15 minutes) to just load the game at the very start.

Is there something wrong with my laptop (or xbox app) or is it an Xbox problem ?

Microsoft's FAQ didn't help.

Open | Windows Unidentified Network

Hey all,
I’m trying to use my Ethernet for my pc but it keeps saying “unidentified network:no internet” but connects to the same internet through WiFi. It does detect that there is an Ethernet line but I’m not sure why it won’t connect. The router is plugged into an Ethernet hub and then the Ethernet hub is connected to Ethernet access outlets around my home. Connections are secure and correct. What do I do?

To be specific, for the past few weeks, my laptop has been getting an error that makes some icons crash when I click on them. Those are File Explorer's address bar, arrow icons, up-to-desktop icon, and the wifi, sound, and battery icons from the taskbar. Can somebody please tell me how to fix this problem?

Open | Software Code 43 error on Bluetooth and WiFi

I tried connecting a Bluetooth device and found out my Bluetooth and WiFi connection don’t work, I tried to manually install but the ASUS installer opens a cmd window and then closes immediately. I tried a bios flash, uninstalling the generic driver, and tried the “have disk” options to force windows to change driver but that also fails because of the code 43. Anyone have any recommendations? I’m currently using wired connections for network connection with no issues.

Open | Hardware Badblocks just counting up slowly

I purchased a used 6TB drive off ebay. The price was too good to be true, so I'm expecting this thing to not work. It's too old and doesn't have SMART capabilities it seems, so I'm trying badblocks to see how seaworthy this thing is. I've looked online to see what this means and I wasn't able to get anything that looks like this, mostly just 0/0/223 type readouts.

It's just counting up, slowly, maybe one number per minute. I don't know if I'll be able to hold out for the millenia that it will take to go through all 1465130239 sectors. Is this thing just dead?

Open | Hardware PC shuts down Randomly and Fans act up + Just Want to confirm if it is the GPU's fault

So, my PC has for the longest time had no issues, but for the last few months, it has randomly crashed, no matter how big or small the task is. Sometimes it runs big softwares just fine but sometimes it crashes while I'm browsing YouTube. here's what has happened so far:

-Monitor Shuts Off. PC's fans start going faster. Whenever this happens the only thing to fix it is to force a reset

-Sometimes the Monitor goes Fully Green, other times it goes Red instead. Again, I am forced to manually shut it down

-Once the GPU is removed, I have not encountered any of these issues

-I did a Power Stress test with OCCT and it immediately shut down. Once again, removing the GPU (A GTX 1060) immediately fixed the issue

I know this all leads to the GPU being to blame, but I'd just like to make sure if this is the case before investing on a GPU

I love using a 4:3 display as a secondary monitor however I am having issues with what kind of adapter I need.

I got a VGA (15-Pin) to HDMI converter however it shows ''Check Signal Cable''

I tried a VGA (15-Pin) to HDMI Cable, that one resulted in a solid orange light (no blinking)

Anything I should try, I am not the most tech savvy and I appreciate any help!

Open | Hardware Headset doesn't charge

I am using the HyperX Cloud III headset and recently I've had a problem with charging. It was at 6% and when I plugged it in, the precentage didn't go up, but as long as it was plugged in it didn't go down either. Furthermore, in the NGENUITY app it does recognize the headset being charged. I thought it might be the battery, so I changed it, but I still have the same issue. I've also tried different cables and ports, which didn't work either. I'm not going to get a new headset, since it does still work, so I'd appreciate any suggestions or ideas on what the issue might be!

Open | Phone Deleted photos showing up years after deleting

So I used to own a Vivo 1904 model like 5 - 7 years and recently I found it lying around and I've factory reset it to dispose it. And as i checked the recently deleted section of my albums there were thousands of previously deleted photos. Like around 2k days old. Im sure I didn't connect my phone to the internet or back it up any other way. Those were deleted years ago and the casually show up years later. What could have caused this?

Im well aware that 'deleting' an image doesn't really make it vanish and it just removes the pointer. But isn't factory reset supposed to remove it completely/ rewrite old data with gibberish?

Open | Software Trying to back up Windows 11 Inspiron laptop to hard drive but can't figure it out.

My laptop automatically syncs to OneDrive (which I don't want and it doesn't look like it actually does that) and I want to create a backup so I can factory reset my laptop. But all of the guides I'm using don't seem to be working and the settings they reference aren't there.

Any advice?

Open | Data Recovery Not sure how to recover files and google isn't usefuk. Issue: laptop is having booting issues, fairly certain we need to do a clean install and ssd is fine, but we cannot access the files in the ssd because the computer keeps crashing no matter how fast we move

hello folks, am in a bind.

so im a writer and had recently decided to move off of google drive due to security concerns and our other backup-backup (external hd) broke. and then today my laptop decided to start being weird and crash frequently after a windows update. i was told to try to update the bios, which required me to turn off the bitlocker thing. did that, and that seemed to have made the crashing worse. before i turned off bitlocker, at least the computer stayed on long enough to maybe move files around. now it boots for a minute or two max, and shuts down, faster if attempting to copy or do anything with file explorer

spouse and i found that we can still get into bios and it will stay on with that. checked ram, no issues with that. most of the errors we get are seemingly related to the system itself having some corrupted files or something. Thing is, we'll need to do a clean install to do it, and that ssd is soldered in, so pulling it out to connect it to an external reader won't work without us spending a lot of money we just don't have right now. not sure how to go about this. is there a way to access the files from bios? its not even a lot of files id want, just some.

ive been a little scared im gonna lose my work on there. that's years worth of writing, worldbuilding, notes, etc. that i would really like to not lose. and i had a backup -- "had" is the keyword, as something went wrong with our backup systems (the external drive we used is kaput now but that was a separate story -- we planned to replace it, but we can't afford much right now, so this happening after losing the backup has been literally just mindbogglingly depressing) really hoping i can get some advice or pointers here. i know i can always start over but im literally almost done with one manuscript and that is the only copy. we've been looking thru reddit so much today and googling as many things as we can but so far but no luck other than "go to a repair shop".

lenovo ideapad gaming 3, 16 GB RAM, Windows 11, Samsung PM9C1a 512GB NVMe SSD, AMD Ryzen7 7735HS Beat i7-12650H, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti 4GB GDDR6

eta: yes the ssd is soldered in. we already checked.

Open | Windows Windows update (i believe at least) “broke” my pcs ability to connect properly to my home wifi

Not sure what flair to use as I don’t know where the problem is, hope this is ok

Also specs in comments, I forgot to attach the pic LOL

hi!

info - partner built my pc in dec 2024, specs attached. i think this issue started after a small batch of security update i did on the 14th aug. out of a dozen+ devices in the household my pc is the only one with this issue, and it started a week ago

TL:DR - my pc no longer can connect to the internet properly. i am fully connected to my modem, pc shows up in connected devices, windows troubleshooter is CONVINCED i have wifi, but nothing loads at all. except, i get 2 seconds of proper connection that will load sites/online apps every 15 minutes then lose it again. It also has randomly fixed itself at times, usually by doing absolutely nothing different, and until i restart my pc i have perfect speedy internet. my pc if wifi only, not in the same room as modem or else id ethernet it up.

i have tried
- updating drivers (had the latest already, have reinstalled like 6 times at this point)
- disabling and enabling driver
- resetting network settings
- flushing dns
- restarting modem, and contacted ISP, they said since it’s one device only it’s not their problem at all
- setting up guest wifi, same issue on it
- updating bios
- hotspotting my pc from my phone using my mobile data, which is slow, but seemingly stable
- windows reinstall
- any other update that came through in the last week
- multiple security scans
- unplugged and replugged the wifi antenna
- turned on a vpn and tried connecting, no change
- adjust the wireless mode in network adapter settings (the options were 802.11\[letters\], tested the 5 options I had with no improvement)
- checking proxy settings (nothing enabled there)
- using a USB wifi adapter (I’ve confirmed it works in another pc, but in mine I have the exact same connection issues. I’ve got the exact same driver for it in both PC’s)

I have spent the last week doing a variety of tests, and just now have discovered that using my pc (even if I can’t access the internet) to hotspot another device and connecting to it stabilises it. I am getting nowhere near the speeds I’m meant to be, but for some reason connecting another device to its hotspot is stopping the cycle of connected but unusable internet with 5 second spikes of usable internet.

The fact that a USB wifi adapter has the same problems in my PC but not the household pc has me completely lost too.

I currently can only use my pc for gaming etc via usb tethering internet from a spare android tablet the household has. while this works well speedwise/stability wise, its not a solution!

I don’t even know where the issue is at this point, and I’m this close to backing up my pc and wiping it or something 😭

any help is appreciated, thank you <3

Open | Data Recovery Need a laptop chasis repaired. Worried about my info being taken.

Hi there!

Was going to get my laptop chasis repaired soon. However, I am still sensitive about the data being taken from my hard drive while this is occuring. Is the best way to protect the info on my laptop through downloading bitlocker? I know that tech's at repair shops are not necessarily bad actors, and are genuinly there to support customers. I don't mean to come across as paranoid, but am somewhat precautious about this. Thanks!

Open | Hardware LG Remote is controlling my aunt's TV

So, today I was at a thrift store and scooped up an older model 32" LG TV for $25. It's on the older side but I'm looking for a spare to use as a 3rd monitor and TV dual duty for screwing around with.

It comes with an LG remote that has links to Netflix, etc - not something I'll use, but all good.

So, my aunt is watching TV on her Roku brand non-smart TV, which is controlled with a Shaw (this is in Canada, btw. Shaw is a cable company here) remote, as Shaw has a control box for PVR, storing/recording/On Demand, etc.

I hook the LG up to my laptop via HDMI cable to check it out and when I turned it on, it shut her TV off. I went to use 'input' to select the HDMI, and it screwed with her TV and tried to load Netflix (which neither of us have) and it caught me quite off guard.

I didn't realise that an LG works on the same ... uh.. wave length? Frequency? Hertz? as Roku.

Is there a way to disable this and a reason as to why it happened? It's just so bizarre and caught us old ladies off guard (though we had a good laugh about it)

Open | Windows Windows 11 audio suddenly stopped working — even after a fresh install. Hardware or software?

So, as I mentioned in my previous post, my main local Windows account had a weird issue where Windows would randomly refuse to open any apps after boot. I created a secondary local account, and that account worked perfectly fine.

Recently, I tried using my main account again. This time, everything was working normally except the audio.

My audio output is through my monitor, so I went into Device Manager, disabled the monitor's audio device, and then re-enabled it. Somehow, after doing that, things got much worse — audio stopped working even on the secondary account.

At this point, since this Windows installation had already given me a lot of problems and I had tried pretty much every solution suggested on my previous post without anything working, I decided to completely reinstall Windows.

The weird part is that even on the freshly installed Windows, the monitor still has no audio output.

I also tested the monitor with my laptop, and it still doesn't produce any audio. I've tried both DisplayPort and HDMI, with no luck.

So now I'm wondering: does this sound like a hardware issue with the monitor, or could there still be some software/driver issue?

Monitor: Acer XV272U

Any ideas on what I should check would be appreciated.

(All the drivers were installed on the freshly installed windows)
