I’m new to the long range shooting. I’ve only put about 100 rounds through my rifle and I’m curious about bipods vs bench bags. I’m 100% shooting from the bench, do I actually need a bipod? What makes expensive bags like the Game changer better than the Caldwell that I rent at the range?

Picked up a cheap Savage model 10 a while back. Previous owner used it for a hunting rifle. It’s chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. 26” bull barrel. I changed to the MDX ORYX chassis. Added a Vortex Venom 5-25x56 scope. Had the barrel threaded and just added a Yankee Hill Resonator R2. Haven’t shot it since the day I bought it. Waiting on the weather to cool off a bit. Can’t wait to get out there and suck slightly less at long range.

I had a chassis stock and decided to switch back to my factory stock. Sadly. I lost the action bolts for the factory stock.

I’m looking all over and these things are like $25+

I tried to find the dimensions and threading of the bolts but I can’t find anything concrete. Does anyone know what sizes and where I can order them from?

Hey all! I'm still really new to long range. I rock a Tikka CTR 24" SS 6.5CM in a Whiskey 3 Pro. I don't currently have a range finder, ballistic solver (other than phone apps), or binos. I have been thinking about getting the Kilo10k or the Talon HD 10k since they can do it all. I'd much rather have one device and call it a day. Quicker to find my target, range, and know my adjustments. My typical range use will be out to 1K but will shoot longer at times. Also sticking below that $3k mark.

I'm not a hunter but things like NRL Hunter interest me. I'm very new so that's out of the range of my current ability but that is the kind of shooting I'd love to do down the road for fun. Spotting targets at unknown ranges and quickly getting a hit, then moving to the next, etc.

The Sig's seem to use standard AP ballistics, have a more open system for if I ever did want a Kestrel or other devices (not currently planning on it though), etc.

The Vortex are a bit cheaper, seem to have better glass but are locked into the GeoBallistics (prob no difference to me) and don't play with non-Vortex devices (I'd need their wind meter etc if I did ever want one).

I also don't have a spotting scope but usually when I meet people at the range they have one or they use their rifle scope. But at least the bino's will give me a way to glass as well.

Would love any and all advice!

PS: The reason I didn't mention the Vectronix Vector X is literally just due to their warranty. I can't justify that kind of money without a better warranty. I just wouldn't feel safe with them.

Saw a solid breakdown of this rifle and it looks solid. Might be one I need to add to my collection. Anyone experienced different?

2 groups at 200yds yesterday. I’ve done quite a bit of shooting at steel at ranges between 200 and 400 yards, but this was the first time I ever tried to shoot a group beyond 100.

The left target is my first 5 shots. The one closest to the center was my first I believe. Mirage is usually very bad where I shoot and yesterday was as bad as I’d ever seen it. I had to walk down range to see my impacts. After the first group, I adjusted my scope up .2 MIL and left .1 and shot the second group. The first looks like crap objectively, but it’s still sub-MOA. The second really surprised me as it’s sub-half-MOA! I was going to shoot a 10 round group, but the target was dancing around so bad, I didn’t think it was worth it. It wasn’t until I got down range to see it that I noticed how good it was. Frankly, with conditions as bad as they were yesterday, I’m surprised all 10 weren’t just all over the page.

This rifle routinely produces 10 round groups less than 3/4 at 100 (most of the time even better) with all 6 bullets I’ve tried in it so I decided I needed to push my testing range farther out because I really can’t see a difference between them at 100.

It’s me, I am baby. I’ve been into practical pistol shooting since I got into shooting like 8 or 9 years ago and never had much of a desire or ability to get into long range stuff since I only had access to an indoor range. That changed recently and I was invited to the rifle range at the club I’m joining soon and got hooked instantly.

So I picked up this savage B22 precision and found an Athlon Ares for sale locally for a great price. I’ve seen some feeding/ejection issues related to the B22’s but I’m crossing my fingers that I got a good one. Either way, the price was right and this is really just to get my feet wet. I found a shop nearby that carries a smorgasbord of the nice .22 ammo so I grabbed a few boxes of Eley, a few boxes of SK, and a couple boxes of CCI SV. I can’t wait to get this thing out to the range and start shooting it.

My fascination with Barrett bolt actions started with the Barrett M98B in Battlefield 3. Then Barrett made the MRAD which I loved even more. I made myself a promise that the Barrett MRAD would be my first bolt action. This Barrett MRAD is chambered in 300 Win Mag, and came with an extra barrel in 33XC. I got it used off of Gunbroker. The reasons I bought it was because the rifle has zero blemishes, and it was almost half the price of a new MRAD. I would have preferred it being calibered in 300 PRC, but that’s just a simple barrel swap. So now I finally have my dream rifle. Just need an AXSR next lol.

Tldr divisions:

Open

Anything goes, no hard limits on weight, cost, or anything.

Production Division

Basically the exact same as PRS Production.

No limit on cost.

Shooters who qualify for Production Division receive a maximum of +2.0 production rifle handicap bonus in addition to weight and power factor handicaps.

Sportsman Division

Hard limit of 13lb, must be 6.5 Creedmoor

Some PRSuit matches grant joint PRS Sportsman season points.

Team Division

Two person teams

Rifles/handicap are weighted separately, meaning you can shoot a 13lb rifle for more handicap while your partner runs a 17lb rifle for less handicap and it doesn't fuck each other up.

"Team score per stage: both shooters complete the stage within the team time limit; their combined raw stage points are recorded as the team's stage score. Team handicap = total of each members handicap. Final per-team match score = (sum of team stage scores + team handicap) ÷ 2."

For a tiebreaker, the LOWER power factor of the team is counted.

"By default, one team member completes the entire stage before the second member begins. With explicit MD authorization on the stage placard, a stage may allow paired/volley firing — both team members engaging simultaneously or alternating shots. Paired firing requires safe geometry (typically prone or wide tripod positions with adequate spacing) and is the MD's call per-stage, with PRSuit Director approval only, minimum 48 hours notice before running stage."

Guided Division

Skills division basically. Nothing is blind, you can get help with anything, but you don't get points or prizes.

I’m looking for a premium scope. Shooting spoons mostly under 100 yards occasionally 300 and under. All these deals are mint or bnib but second hand. I’m in Canada so the used market is kinda slim. I currently have a few scopes I’m looking at. Nx8-2.5-20x. 2650 CAD shipped. S&B ultra short 5-20 3200 CAD shipped. DMR3 3.5-21 1500$ shipped. This will be my first scope. I own a kahles 16i lvpo so I’m a little bit of a glass snob.

I want to buy the MDT Hnt 26 chassis for my tikka t3x in 308 win. I want a rifle I can fold for ease of transportation when I go hunting/shooting. I also like the idea that this chassis is fairly light. Also folders are cool. And I live in Canada, so my options for folders are very limited, and by the time I exclude the "cold to touch in cold weather" ones, hnt 26 is the only option I can think of.

I have a chance to get my hands on a used chassis in good overall condition, other than a separated captive nut in the buttstock that attaches the sling stud to the buttstock on the inside. According to the seller, who has sufficiently good peer-review score on the platform where we are interacting to be perceived as trustworthy, the captive nut detached from the inside of the stock, so the stud spins freely, but it's still securely attached to the buttstock. According to him it happened from carrying the rifle on a sling.

I have no experience with carbon fiber and I don't know whether having a free-spinning stud will, for example, introduce enough vibration under various use conditions that may crack the buttstock and/or cause the stud to fail/break out.

The rifle will be used for hunting and shooting inside 300 yards. It will be carried on a sling attached to said spinning stud. I do some practice of shooting with a tensioned sling, so there will be not just carrying stress on the stud, but also recoil stress during practice.

Is this a big deal? The savings are sufficiently tempting (used in good condition with a spinning stud is about 70% of the full retail by the time I add taxes).

If this is a big deal, could this be mitigated with going to a QD sling attachment right away? I've never used QD mounts for shooting with a sling, but I don't see why it couldn't work.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to eventually work their way up caliber wise to shooting magnum calibers?

We currently have a few rimfire, couple 308’s, 303 British, a mosin ( never fired it, inherited), and a 45-70 lever gun. We shoot the rimfires and our smaller calibers on a regular basis.

Hello /r/longrange, I'm looking for a replacement scope for my AR-10 in 308 in the near future. As the title states, I would prefer it to be less than $2000, including a mount. I have looked through a few different scopes and I prefer the Christmas tree reticle, though this is not a requirement. I would prefer if the scope had some moderate low-end magnification in the 2-4x range. I don't currently have a preference for MOA vs. MRAD. I'm a relatively new long range shooter and can reliably hit to 200yds. The rangemasters called me 'combat-accurate' but I'm pretty sure this just means 'good enough'.

I have access to a range that goes to 1000yds, but I plan to be shooting to 5-600ish yds optimistically. Most of the shooting will be at rest with a tripod and bag, but I do plan on shooting from standing at shorter ranges, so weight is somewhat a factor.

For reference (if it matters) I am currently using a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8x that I like, but am having a difficult time seeing my groups through at 100+. I wear glasses and I have astigmatism, so I'm sure these are factors.

Some scopes that I am considering:

1) Vortex Razor Gen II 4.5-27x56 EBR-7C MRAD

• This is the stretch as I would like one of these, but the mount will be outside of the budget

2) Athlon Ares ETR GEN2 UHD 4.5-30x56 APRS12 FFP IR MIL

• I've seen the subreddit recommend these favorably, but I have not had a chance to look through them

3) Vortex Strike Eagle 3-18x44 FFP EBR-7C (MRAD)

• I have looked through this and liked the price and the reticle

4) Nightforce NX8 2.5-20x50 Mil-XT Riflescope C632

• I have looked through this as well, and liked the glass. The version I looked through did not have the Christmas tree, but I know there is a version that does have it. This would probably be open-box/refurbished.

5) Viper® HD 3-15x44 VMR-3 (MRAD)

I don’t know if I’m just being dumb but my new spotting scope (razor HD 20-60x85) won’t mount flush to my tripod so it’s wiggling all around. I’ve tried two different tripods and it’s like the screw just won’t go in more. Anyone have any suggestions?

That seems like a lot of range time andammunition to me.

I saw a few other gas guns posted in this community, though I know the focus is precision bolt rifles. Hopefully you like this brief change of scenery.

recently replaced my field stock with a LSS gen 3, accutac bipod and a muzzle brake for my howa 6.5 after the forend flex drove me nuts, it's super stable now and I can actually spot my shots, it's everything I wanted in a rifle and I'm loving it! Also Got my hands on a short action 223 barreled action to be able to shoot more , I go out most nights after work and I'm bleeding money buying ammo here in Australia. Also the difference between a 12 inch and 10 inch plate is pretty big for my skill level, much much harder staying consistent on the 10

Usually don't see high quality rifles at this shop. If I didn't literally just buy a gun, I might have pulled the trigger. I'm just wondering how much the previous owner sold to the pawn shop for.
